Zendaya has made some cool money in her career, beginning as a child artist and then fully transitioning into an acclaimed actress. In 2024, she has an Emmy and a Golden Globe to her name, makes millions per role, and is dating one of the most handsome young men in Hollywood. Her massive net worth is very close to the money her Spider-Man co-star and boyfriend, Tom Holland, makes.

And while there are tons of creative costume ideas floating around the internet, I want to draw your attention to some passionate fans of Dune who all got the same idea: a couples costume where one person dresses as a sandworn and the other as their rider. Take a look, with thanks to the good people of the Dune subreddit for the pictures:

I like how each sandworm outfit is different, with each having a different vision of the cavernous maw of the mightiest beasts on the desert planet of Arrakis. I also like that I can see the one guy's face peeking out of that maw in the third picture; otherwise, I'm not sure how the people in the sandworm outfits can see, but I've learned never to underestimate...

Hungary’s 30% tax incentive for film and TV, which has helped attract recent Hollywood shoots like “Dune: Part Two,” “Maria” and “The Brutalist” to the country, has been extended by six years.
Hungary, continental Europe’s biggest production hub, has attracted direct annual production spend totalling $910 million, a fourfold increase in the last five years.
The extension of the tax incentive was revealed on Monday in Los Angeles by government commissioner for the development of the Hungarian film industry, Csaba Kael, who was in the city to reveal the winners of Hungarian Film Institute’s inaugural awards for Best International Production Filmed in Hungary.
Originally launched in 2004, the Hungarian film support scheme has contributed to such Hollywood films as “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” “A Good Day to Die Hard,” “The Martian” and “Terminator: Dark Fate.” Other international productions to have filmed in Hungary include “Poor Things,” Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Romulus,...

Born September 1, 1996, Zendaya rose to fame as a child star on the Disney Channel, with fan-favorite characters in “Shake It Up” and “K.C. Undercover.” The singer and actress soon started dabbling in feature films, where she earned the plum role of Mj, Tom Holland‘s love interest, in Marvel’s “Spider-Man” movies. Zendaya’s biggest claim to fame was in 2020, when she became the youngest-ever Emmy winner in the Best Drama Actress category for playing a teen drug addict on “Euphoria.” Her career continues to blossom thanks to recent releases like “Challengers” (directed by Luca Guadagnino) and “Dune” (directed by Denis Villeneuve).

The Zellner brothers’ anticipated alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang, starring and produced by Cate Blanchett, just got buzzier with the unveiling of her co-stars.
Dave Bautista, Steven Yeun, Zoë Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, Riley Keough, and Channing Tatum have been confirmed for the cast as the movie’s international sales agent mk2 films gears up to ramp up pre-sales at the AFM.
Alpha Gang centers on a group of alien invaders sent to conquer Earth. Disguised in human form as a 1950s leather-clad biker gang, dubbed the Alpha Gang. They are ruthless in their mission, until they succumb to the most toxic and contagious human condition of all: emotions. The movie follows the Zellner brothers’ Sundance hit Sasquatch Sunset.
“These stellar new recruits are a powerhouse of comedic talent, adding even more excitement to this eagerly awaited film. This cast, just like the story and its filmmakers, is out of this world.

The internet is gradually picking up on a peculiar trend, the imaginative designs of popcorn buckets for marketing. It all began with the release of Dune 2, where the marketing team showcased a rather uniquely crafted bucket that caught everyone’s eye. Since then, the trend has spiraled into somewhat bizarre territory, particularly with Deadpool and Wolverine, which further trolled the trend in its own way.

Moana 2 is on the verge of release and it seems like it is getting its very own, Popcorn buckets and nacho containers as well! On a brighter note, Moana’s popcorn bucket managed to stand out not for the reasons the other two did (thank god!). It is still raising eyebrows for other reasons equally hilarious, and raising the question, how far can creativity go when it comes to a simple popcorn bucket?

At the end of 2021’s “Dune,” Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atriedes looks out across the desert in awe as he sees a Fremen of Arrakis riding a sandworm.
It was a tease of what was to come from director Denis Villeneuve in this year’s “Dune: Part Two.” Paul and his mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) immerse themselves in Fremen culture in the sequel, and the sandworm ride is a coming-of-age ritual. Paul riding a massive worm would be his ascension to power. The white-knuckled sequence where Paul mounts one and rides across the desert was something cinematographer Greig Fraser had to get right.
Speaking to Variety for the Inside the Frame series, Fraser explains “This is his journey of becoming accepted by the Fremen. It’s a journey that has come a long way up to this point. There is some part of the Fremen community that believes he’s going to die,...

Deadpool & Wolverine‘s risqué and suggestive buckets also made it to the list of Nsfw movie collectibles. It’s a unique year for sequels and prequels at the Oscars. There are three films whose preceding installments won five or more trophies from the academy: “Dune: Part II,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” and “Gladiator II.” That opens the door for history to be made. If one or more of those films wins five times, it will be the first time in history that two films in the same franchise have won that many competitive prizes. For which film is that likeliest to happen? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the wide open Best Director race, where only two people feel somewhat secure.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Our weekly conversations have finally landed on what might be my favorite category of this entire race: Best Director. To be honest, I’m terribly vexed about the whole field — and not just because we got to see “Gladiator II” aka “Glad II ator” on Monday. Before we get to this year’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” let’s start at the top: According to the odds and most experts, “Anora” director Sean Baker and “The Brutalist” filmmaker Brady Corbet are the most likely to receive nominations in this category next year. I certainly believe it: Both films feel undeniable and both...

Is the Netflix Oscar drought finally about to end?
The streamer has long been chasing the elusive Academy Award for best picture. After a series of near misses, 2024 might just be the year the streaming giant claims the coveted prize — thanks to Jacques Audiard’s critically lauded crime musical “Emilia Pérez.”
The Spanish-language drama premiered to fanfare at Cannes and has a star-studded cast, including Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz. The bold narrative, riveting performances and groundbreaking representation garnered critical acclaim, leading to a shared best actress prize for the four stars. Some pundits believe “Emilia” has the goods to go the way of Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” which in 2020 became the first non-English-language film to win best picture. “Emilia” is also France’s submission for international feature, which further positions it as a viable Oscar darling.

There is little doubt that Ryan Reynolds is one of the biggest stars that Hollywood has on offer. The Marvel’s Deadpool and Wrexham AFC owner has starred in a plethora of hit projects such as Free Guy and Detective Pikachu, but is currently facing a bit of a stutter, with the release of Paramount Pictures’ If, which has till date made just over $104 million, against a budget of $110 million.
The John Krasinski offering has thus far failed to make an impact and boasts of a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While there may be plenty of reasons why the movie has failed to even break even thus far, one fan recently claimed on Twitter that it might have something to do with the ‘movie fatigue’ that is currently afflicting theatre audiences. Acting on a show like House of the Dragon is difficult, especially if you're Matt Smith and you're playing a character like Daemon Targaryen. There's the armor, there's the huge sets to navigate, there's acting opposite a dragon that isn't really there, there's trying to keep your character sympathetic even as they groom and marry their niece, etc.
But apparently, none of that holds a candle to getting into one of the show's famous white-blonde wigs, which pretty much all Targaryens must wear. "The wigs are hard," Smith said during a panel at New York Comic Con this past weekend, railing against the "wigs, the bald caps [and] the pins" required to get Daemon's long flowing locks into place.
But it sounds like he may have found a solution. Smith has been working with Austin Butler on a movie called Caught Stealing, a crime drama where Smith plays a character with...

Will “Gladiator II” conquer the Oscars again? Did “The Substance” make the right move going comedy/musical at the Golden Globes? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Ridley Scott‘s epic sequel and more.
“Gladiator II,” starring Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger, finally screened for the press this week to mostly positive reactions. The film was already in the top 10 in the Best Picture odds and is currently in eighth place, but Scott has risen to sixth in the Best Director rankings with seven experts and three editors predicting him to win his overdue Oscar. Could the 86-year-old legend win Best Director without “Gladiator II” winning Best Picture — the opposite of what happened with the first movie?

Dune Part Two And The Star Wars Universe (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Could Dune and Star Wars be the long-lost cousins of the sci-fi world? With the release of Dune: Part Two, those age-old comparisons between the epic Frank Herbert universe and George Lucas’s space opera have been reignited. And the roots run way more profound.
Let’s rewind. Before Denis Villeneuve’s Dune adaptation happened, the literary world had already crowned Frank Herbert’s Dune series as a sci-fi titan. Herbert’s work laid the foundation for countless following stories. Enter Star Wars, the franchise that blew up the big screen in the 1970s, sprinkling its storylines with concepts that Dune readers couldn’t help but find… familiar. Coincidence? Probably not.

The State of the Race
This season, the Academy shortlist for Best Original Score has expanded from 15 to 20 titles, and now up to three composers will be allowed to receive the Oscar. In terms of the race, “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) was ruled ineligible because composer Hans Zimmer used more than the allotted 20 percent of the pre-existing themes and music from his Oscar-winning “Dune” score. However, Zimmer is still very much in the race with his score for “Blitz” (Apple TV+).

What do consumers want? How is AI changing how business operates? When it comes to work habits — do you lean toward a whiteboard or mood board?
Those are among the lofty and light questions tackled by more than two dozen participants in the video studio that Variety hosted earlier this month in New York connection with Advertising Week. This week’s episode of Variety‘s “Strictly Business” weekly podcast features highlights from those conversations. We spoke with a mix of creative talent and blue-chip executives from companies ranging from Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and NBCUniversal to Nvidia, Cvs and Ford.
Here’s a sampling from the Variety Executive Interview Studio presented by Canva.
Terry Crews, on why he launched the creative advertising agency Super Serious:
“What inspired this was the fact that I love entertainment — period. And we found that people didn’t view commercials as entertaining — but we do.

Hans Zimmer has been the sound of modern-day blockbusters, most notably his work on epic sci-fi and action movies. Many may know him from his work with Christopher Nolan, although Nolan has opted to work with Ludwig Göransson in his last two outings. Zimmer’s collaboration with Nolan on Inception even notably ushered in the trend of the “Bwaaam” musical sting that can be found in most trailers to help intensify and punctuate a dramatic turn.
Zimmer’s notes would be attached to Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part Two this year. And his score would showcase some of his usual intensity along with some melodic, dramatic sounds, which feature the franchise’s signature female vocals. Unfortunately, Zimmer’s score for the film have not met the eligibility requirements to be nominated for an Academy Award, according to Variety. This is because the music surpasses the Academy’s limit on pre-existing music.

Every filmmaker has their own unique vibe that usually shines through in any movie they make, and that’s what helps them build a loyal fan base of cinephiles. Denis Villeneuve is no exception, especially when it comes to sci-fi, a genre he really nails as a director.

While sequels usually end up disappointing the audience, Dune: Part Two came as a breath of fresh air. The film dives deeper into the world of Arrakis, continuing the journey of Paul Atreides as he embraces his destiny. Starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, Dune 2 was praised by anyone and everyone for a number of reasons. Whether it was the epic storyline or the stunning visuals, the movie proved that sequels can be done right if you set your heart to it.

The score for Dune: Part Two is not able to compete at the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards.
The first movie was nominated for and won several awards at the 2022 Oscars ceremony, including Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography and, of course, Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer.
However, Hans‘ score for the second movie has been deemed ineligible at the 2025 ceremony, which will take place in March.
Keep reading to find out why…
According to Variety, the score for Dune: Part Two is not eligible “due to surpassing the Academy’s limit on pre-existing music.”
“In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise,” the Academy’s rules state.
Hans‘ score for the second film “incorporates substantial elements from his work on 2021′s Dune,” therefore causing it to fall out of the eligibility requirements.

"Dune: Part Two" is one of the best films of 2024, a monumental achievement that seems like a shoo-in to be nominated for a swath of technical awards at the upcoming 97th Academy Awards. As of this writing, several screenings of the film are taking place throughout this week in Los Angeles, featuring director Denis Villeneuve giving Q&As after a number of them. One of these screenings includes a chat with Villeneuve and composer Hans Zimmer, moderated by the winner of Best Original Score for the 96th Academy Awards, Ludwig Göransson. It certainly seemed like Zimmer's work for "Dune: Part Two" was going to be a big part of the film's push at the Academy Awards.
Sadly, that part of the movie's awards campaign is now officially over -- at least when it comes to the Oscars specifically. According to Variety, Zimmer's score has been deemed not eligible for competition.

The Academy won’t release its official shortlists until later this year, but one presumed contender for Best Score has already missed the cut.
On Tuesday, Variety confirmed Hans Zimmer’s score for “Dune: Part Two” is ineligible for Oscar consideration next year due to its reliance on pre-existing music.
“In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise,” reads the Academy’s rules on the matter. Being a sequel to “Dune,” Zimmer used many of the same motifs and themes for the film’s blockbuster sequel, thus the disqualification.
The loss of Zimmer’s “Dune: Part Two” score was already anticipated by many online, particularly after the newly launched Warner Bros. FYC website had left Best Score off its list of categories for “Dune: Part Two.” The original film won Zimmer Best Score,...

One of the year’s most anticipated and epic musical scores won’t be in the running for an Academy Award.
Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part Two,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, was met with critical acclaim when it hit theaters in March. Both critics and audiences lauded the film’s visuals, storytelling, and, most notably, the music score by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer. However, Zimmer’s powerful and evocative score for the sci-fi epic is not eligible to be submitted for this year’s Oscars due to surpassing the Academy’s limit on pre-existing music; therefore, it cannot be nominated in the best original score category.
The Academy’s rule states: “In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.” Since Zimmer’s composition for “Dune: Part Two” incorporates substantial...

As the film’s US theatrical rollout continues to shrink, it looks like Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2 won’t get an awards push either.
Last week we covered the story that Warner Bros isn’t giving Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Juror #2, much of a release in the United States. Given that Eastwood’s name is still held in high regard in his native country, it felt like an odd move by the studio to not push it wider and make more noise about what could be the filmmaker’s final film.
While Eastwood is now rumoured to be setting up another project after Juror #2, he’s 94 years old and while we’re sure that his gaze is as steely as ever, there’s always the chance that this courtroom drama could be his final film. Given his decades-long partnership with Warner Bros, and the film picking up plenty of...

The big news in home movie viewing this week isn’t that new-to-pvod “The Wild Robot” (Universal) and “Alien: Romulus” (Disney) split the #1 positions on the iTunes and Fandango top 10 charts.
The significant development is that both, like “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney), rent for 48 hours at $24.99, not the standard $19.99. That’s a 25 percent increase for PVOD, an increasingly essential source of studio revenue.
A few big hits have tested the $24.99 rental, including “Dune 2” and “Inside Out 2,” but “Robot” and “Alien” are successes of just over $100 million, not blockbusters.. Studios get 80 percent of the cost after a small carrier fee; the $5 increase represents about $4 more for each rental.
DreamWorks Animation’s “Robot” arrives after its third weekend in theaters. That’s not unusual for Universal, although in recent months they sometimes held back another week or two for bigger titles.
Marketing for the home showings may boost theater attendance.

Production has started on East of Eden, the Netflix adaptation of the 1952 novel by Nobel Prize–winning author John Steinbeck. The seven-episode limited series, written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, will film in several locations across New Zealand and will star Florence Pugh, who will also executive produce.
The new take on the classic novel continues the legacy of Zoe’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 East of Eden film starring James Dean.
“In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me,” Kazan told Netflix. “But it is Steinbeck’s writing — personal, shocking, profound, and...

In 2023, Austin Butler came pretty close to nabbing his first Oscar win, thanks to his immaculate portrayal of the King of Rock and Roll. But despite taking the Golden Globe accolade home, the actor ended up losing to Brendan Fraser in the race for Best Action at the 95th Academy Awards. With Dune 2 becoming one of the most acclaimed releases of the year, it seems The Bikeriders might be getting his second shot at the accolade.

But given the success of Dune 2, Warner Bros. is once again pushing the Hollywood heartthrob for next year’s Oscars, and it’s easy to see why.

After becoming a prime Middle East hub for Hollywood and Bollywood productions, Abu Dhabi is raising its rebate on film and TV productions and is looking to lure more business to the United Arab Emirates capital at Mipcom.
The Abu Dhabi Film Commission has announced they are upping their existing 30% rebate to more than 35% of qualified below-the-line spend starting in January 2025. The move is a first step of a broader “enhancement across all of the the creative industry verticals” in the Emirates capital, said in a statement Mohamed Dobay – acting director general of Abu Dhabi’s Creative Media Authority (CMA) that oversees the film commission – “to ensure an even more attractive offering for a thriving industry,” he added.

I need to come clean: I’m not the biggest fan of romance movies. Shocker, I know, given I’ve managed to write about anything but. But, there was something about ‘We Live in Time’ that drew me to the theater. This touching romance drama follows the lives of Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield) as their futures intertwine after she runs him over and sends him to the hospital. Though a wild meet-cute, ‘We Live in Time’ settles into a familiarity that we all want in our own lives. It was refreshing to see a romance film outside of the context of someone forcing me to watch it while I was trying to get over something or someone, and what a movie to break that cycle with. I left the film in tears, sad but impressed at how A24 decided to produce this film. The manner of storytelling has garnered some mixed reactions,...
