Steve Carell puts heart into comedy. Whether he is playing the iconic Michael Scott or delivering poignant performances in films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, the man’s ability to balance humor with genuine emotion sets him apart from the rest, wonderfully so. Over a decade ago, Steve Carell starred alongside Paull Rudd in Dinner for Schmucks.

He played the role of Barry Speck, an eccentric, bizarre character who likes to collect dead mice and dress them up for his dioramas. Even while playing a character that others were to make fun of, Steve Carell believes his portrayal of Barry wasn’t directed towards making fun of a person who’s different but rather towards celebrating him. Steve Carell is living proof that comedy doesn’t have to be unconscientious.

One of the biggest crimes in the television industry is the fact that Steve Carell won zero Emmys for his work in The Office. The man worked hard for seven seasons, playing a role that would go on to be etched into our minds and hearts forever. Michael Scott might have been a hilarious character, but playing him with such dedication was no joke. Steve Carell was so believable in the role that it has become impossible to separate the actor from the character, which is all the more reason that he should have won at least one Emmy for the role.

Bob Odenkirk has a healthy outlook on being runner-up for a once-in-a-lifetime gig as the regional manager at a small paper supply company on The Office, as well he should — if Odenkirk spent a decade at Dunder Mifflin, he probably wouldn’t have ever gotten that law degree.
More than most sitcoms, The Office (U.S.) has a whole hypothetical culture surrounding the “What if?” casting decisions that led to a collection of mostly unknown actors making their big breaks on the lauded NBC sitcom, thanks, in large part, to the many surviving audition tapes of the also-rans. The online and active Office fandom is constantly theorizing what the show would have looked like if Seth Rogen landed the role of Dwight instead of Rainn Wilson, or if Kathryn Hahn beat out Jenna Fischer for Pam, possibly to play out the famed will-they-or-won’t-they romance plot line with Adam Scott’s Jim.

Domo arigato, Mr. Bob O. We all know Steve Carell as Michael Scott, but before he landed the role of World’s Best Boss at Dunder-Mifflin, several other names were in the running. But one standout is Bob Odenkirk, who had a comedy background to be sure but admits his particular style wouldn’t have fit The Office.
Appearing on Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey’s Office Ladies podcast, Odenkirk explained why he didn’t get the lead role on The Office, which would eventually land Steve Carell six Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. “I am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy. I am oddly earnest, and…it’s one of the reasons I think Steve Carell is a better, you know — is the one who got the role.” He added that Carell has a leg up – hopefully...

Bob Odenkirk has an idea of why Steve Carell ultimately landed the role of Michael Scott in The Office over him.
The Emmy-winning actor, who was a frontrunner for the lead role in the beloved sitcom, recently appeared on the Office Ladies podcast, where he chatted about the show as well as his decision to transition to more dramatic roles.
“I am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy,” Odenkirk explained to hosts Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, who played Pam Beesly and Angela Martin, respectively. “I am oddly earnest, and … it’s one of the reasons I think Steve Carell is a better, you know — is the one who got the role [in The Office].”
“There were other parts that I think I was up for that Steve got, and it’s because he’s better at being genuinely fun,” the Better Call Saul actor continued.

Years after "The Sopranos" started what we consider the Peak TV era, there came a show that changed network TV forever: "Lost." It's a show that is as controversial as it is influential, one that helped bring serialization to mainstream TV, make the showrunner as recognizable among TV obsessives as the actors on screen, and delivered one of the most controversial endings in history (though it is a perfect send-off for the show).
Much like "Star Wars," it doesn't matter where you fall on the love/hate scale of "Lost," there is one thing all fans can agree on — the score remains consistently stellar throughout.
A big part of why "Lost" is still talked about so many years later is Michael Giacchino's score. There is a reason why Giacchino has played multiple concerts celebrating the music of the show since it ended in 2010, and why hundreds of people from...

Plot: When a ninety-four-year-old grandmother is ripped off by phone scammers for $10k, she goes on a mission to get her money back.
Review: Watching Thelma is a bittersweet experience. While led by the always delightful June Squibb, the film co-stars the late Richard Roundtree in his meatiest role in years. Between this and the recent Jane Fonda movie Moving On, Roundtree was on the verge of the comeback that long-eluded him, only for him to die suddenly at 81 in the fall. It’s a shame because the former Shaft star is a delight in this low-key caper flick.
It offers a long overdue leading role to the great June Squibb. At ninety-four, the actress has been in high demand in recent years, seemingly still sharp as a tack. In Thelma, she plays the title role, being a doting Grandmother pushing back at the notion that she’s too old to live independently.

“Taking from an elderly person is as bad as stealing from a child,” growls Jason Statham in “The Beekeeper,” reinforcing the image of “helpless” old people in need of defending. (He spends the rest of the movie knocking heads after scammers steal money from his gullible landlady.) With “Thelma,” writer-director Josh Margolin tries out a different approach, casting nonagenarian character actor June Squibb as an unlikely yet satisfying action star. It’s a cute idea, celebrating the willpower and determination of a 93-years-young woman. If audiences are willing to suspend their disbelief for “The Beekeeper,” why not do the same when it’s Squibb on a rampage?
“Thelma” bloomed out of Margolin’s relationship with his own grandmother, and its more endearing dialogue exchanges were directly lifted from things the real-life Thelma says and does. Squibb’s character has a doting — and slightly dopey — grandson of her own, Daniel, who visits regularly,...

Editor’s Note: This review originally published during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Magnolia Pictures opens “Thelma” in U.S. theaters June 21.
“We’re not what we were.” “There is no good death.” “You want to see what’s going to happen to the ones you love.” Writer/director Josh Margolin squeezes surprisingly funny freshness from the musty themes of aging, death, and lost autonomy in his poignantly written “Thelma,” a seriocomic “Mission Impossible” remix that casts June Squibb as the titular action hero in a slow-moving but still quietly epic revenge flick about elder fraud.
The debut filmmaker’s tribute to his extraordinary grandmother (the story supposedly recounts an actual experience of hers and features a clip of the real Thelma during the credits) almost sounds like the premise of a raunchy Melissa McCarthy romp or gender-swapped “Bad Grandpa” riff. When scam artists mess with the wrong 93-year-old woman — successfully...

Actor Richard Roundtree died on Tuesday at 81 years old.
Roundtree, known for his role as John Shaft in the 1971 film of the same name, first disclosed his health struggles in 1993, when he was diagnosed with breast cancer. He ultimately died after battling pancreatic cancer.
Before he was cast in Shaft, Roundtree started out as a model, posing for Johnson Products’ Duke hair grease and Salem cigarettes. A few years later, he took on his first acting role as Jack Johnson in the play The Great White Hope. He didn’t make it to film until he was cast for a minor role in What Do You Say To A Naked Lady?
A year after his first big-screen role, Roundtree went on to star in Shaft and its sequels, accruing more than 150 movie and television credits throughout his career. His most recent film appearance was in Moving On, with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Richard Roundtree, who will forever be linked with the role of trailblazing Black detective John Shaft, has died. The actor, who on screen is best remembered for the iconic role, was also a breast cancer survivor known for raising funds to treat the condition. He was more recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died yesterday afternoon, with his family at his bedside.
Richard Roundtree was born in New Rochelle, New York, played football for Southern Illinois University and did some modeling before the acting bug bit.
He was drawn to theater and joined New York’s acclaimed Negro Ensemble Company, then starred as Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope off-Broadway before the role of John Shaft presented itself — a lucky break secured after Sidney Poitier refused to screen test for the role, leading director Gordon Parks to cast Roundtree instead.

As confirmed by Deadline, Richard Roundtree, the groundbreaking star of the original "Shaft" franchise has died as a result of pancreatic cancer. He was 81. Roundtree was a gifted athlete who played for New Rochelle High School's nationally-ranked and undefeated football team but later dropped out of college after he was scouted by Ebony Fashion Fair founder Eunice W. Johnson and began modeling for companies like Duke hair products and Salem cigarettes. A few years later, he joined the Negro Ensemble Company theater group in New York City, where he became a fast leading man. This led to a successful career in front of the camera, where Roundtree would become colloquially known as the "first Black action hero."
He appeared in a number of Blaxploitation films in the 1970s, but he became a cinematic icon as detective John Shaft in the films "Shaft," "Shaft's Big Score!," "Shaft in Africa," and the short-lived series adaptation.

Richard Roundtree, who broke ground with his signature role in the Shaft movie franchise, died October 24 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer with his family at his bedside. He was 81.
Roundtree’s career spanned five decades and included everything from his most popular blaxploitation role to a very early appearance on As the World Turns in 1956 to being a Season 2 main cast member on Ava DuVernay’s OWN series Cherish the Day last year.
He is best known for playing detective John Shaft in the 1971 action thriller and its sequels, Shaft’s Big Score! (1972) and Shaft in Africa (1973) as well as the short-lived 1973 Shaft TV series.
For his performance in the original film, Roundtree was nominated for a New Star of the Year Golden Globe and hailed as the first Black action hero. More importantly, the films made Shaft a cultural hero, a symbol of Black power onscreen, at the box office and beyond.

Explosions in the Sky have announced End, their first new album in seven years. It’s out today, September 15th through Temporary Residence Ltd.
“Our starting point was the concept of an ending—death, or the end of a friendship or relationship,” Eits shared in a statement. “Every song comes from a story, or an idea one of us has had that we’ve all expanded on and made its own world. Maybe it’s our nature, but we kept feeling that the album title was ultimately open to a lot more interpretation—the end of a thing or a time can mean a stop, but it can also mean a beginning, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in comparison to what it becomes next.”
Beginning in September, Eits will take the album on the road on an expansive 26-city tour. Tickets are currently available for purchase here.

Jim Wiseman’s Sky original documentary “Williams and Mansell: Red 5” is set for a debut on Sky Documentaries and Now on July 8. Featuring some of the biggest names in F1, it follows Nigel Mansell and the Williams Racing team’s rise to fame told through the eyes of his team, family and drivers including Jenson Button, Damon Hill and Karun Chandhok.
Mansell grew up in England in the 1960s, dreaming of becoming a professional race car driver, despite not having the financial means for it, while Frank Williams was realizing his own dream at the company he founded, Williams Grand Prix Engineering. The two joined forces, and after years of trying to win together, Mansell left to join Ferrari and then ultimately retired from racing after years of ups and downs, without ever winning the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. But seemingly overnight, he came out of retirement and re-joined Williams Racing.

“It was a contributor to the specialty box office, and I hope it will be again,” says Laemmle CEO Greg Laemmle of MoviePass, the subscription service that unsurprisingly went bankrupt in early 2020 after offering a movie a day for ten bucks a month.
A co-founder Stacy Spikes, who was pushed out amid strategic differences with new owners, including the $9.95 plan, acquired the assets out of bankruptcy in 2021. He relaunched MoviePass yesterday after months of beta testing. The movie-a-day-plan, which left the service subsidizing most tickets, “was never going to work,” Sikes tells Deadline. AMC had actually threatened to sue, saying the plan wasn’t sustainable and set consumers up “for ultimate disappointment down the road.” Its bankruptcy filing listed more than 12,000 subscribers it may have owned money to.

Exclusive: Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to The Last Rider, the story of cycling legend Greg LeMond, who came back from a near death experience to win his sport’s greatest race.
LeMond remains the only American man to win the Tour de France, a feat he accomplished three times – in 1986, 1989 and 1990 (Tour victories by Americans Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis were vacated after they admitted using banned performance-enhancing drugs). Remarkably, LeMond’s second and third Tour de France wins came after he was nearly killed in a hunting accident, in which his brother-in-law accidentally blasted him with a shotgun, hitting LeMond with 60 pellets. Nostalgia for the ’80s has been inspiring entertainment since well before “Stranger Things” hit streaming. Classic films from “Pretty Woman” to “American Psycho” have received musical adaptations on Broadway. And last year “Top Gun: Maverick” soared at the box office and into the Best Picture Oscars race: solidifying short-shorts, jet engines, and long overdue ’80s sequels as timeless symbols of Hollywood excellence.
So, asked politely but firmly: where the hell is our “9 to 5” revival?
Starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton, Colin Higgins’ 1980 workplace comedy is an all-time great revenge flick sharpened by the specificity of its times. The feature-length feminist rallying cry tells the tale of three office workers who fantasize about getting even with their terrible boss Mr. Hart (Dabney Coleman): a sexist and self-centered jerk who, let’s be honest, really had that credenza-to-the-head coming.

The much-maligned Richard III finally gets the royal treatment in Stephen Frears’ The Lost King as amateur historian Philippa Langley unearths the monarch’s five-century-old remains in a parking lot in Leicester, England, in 2012. Two books and a documentary later, IFC Films presents the feature film version in 750+ theaters.
“It took eight years from starting the search to cutting the tarmac. To see it telescoped into a hundred or so minutes made it really powerful for me,” Langley, who’s played in the film by Sally Hawkins, told Deadline.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin share one of Hollywood's oldest friendships. The duo first met in 1977, and their connection soon turned into an onscreen collaboration in the seminal feminist comedy "9 to 5." The pair have remained very close friends through the years and decided to work together again in Netflix's long-running hit comedy series "Grace and Frankie," which ended in 2022 after seven seasons.
"We've been friends ever since," Tomlin told the Washington Post in 2017 of their first meeting in 1977, backstage at her one-woman show. "We're friends because I just love her. I know Jane has my back whenever she can."
In the same interview, Fonda added that she left Hollywood when she was 50 and came back at 65, and ageism is alive and well - but she and Tomlin fight it together. "And one of the things that Lily and I are proud of - and want to continue...

Roadside Attraction’s Moving On grossed an estimated $798k at about 800 theaters, about status quo this weekend for a specialty sector that’s better but still looking to break out.
The audience for the Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin-toplined comedy was, not surprisingly, 63% female and 82% over 35. Some 64% were 50+. It played best on the coasts. Estimated per theater average for the Paul Weitz film that also features Malcolm McDowell and Richard Roundtree is just over $1k.
Fonda and Tomlin play estranged friends who reunite to seek revenge against the husband of their recently deceased best friend. The film had trailer time before 80 For Brady where the duo played alongside Rita Moreno and Sally Field (and Tom Brady). That wide-release opening Paramount pic, now down to 168 screens in week 7, has grossed $39 million.
Roadside Attractions co-president Howard Cohen called the opening number “positive” with word of mouth good and noted that midweek...

For the second time in a month, a mid-level comic book franchise opened to disappointment. “Shazam!: Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros. Discovery) grossed $30.5 million in domestic sales.
That’s more than 40 percent down from the initial DC Comics film in 2019 (with ticket prices at least 15 percent lower). At $35 million, international territories were no better: China grossed $4.4 million in over 21,000 locations for less than a $210 per-theater average. At a reported production cost of $125 million before significant marketing costs, this will likely lose money.
Wbd vacated the film’s Christmas date, trading the potential for accelerated holiday interest for access to premium screens and playing during spring vacation. Smart strategy, but the payoff still wasn’t there.
DC is not alone in this plight; Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Disney) struggles to reach $500 million worldwide. Don’t expect either character to return as more than part of an ensemble.
