It’s not all Marvel and animated fairytales. Here’s our pick of the best films you can watch now on Disney Plus UK:
The output of Marvel, Lucasfilm and the Mouse House’s own library of films and TV shows are Disney Plus’s big selling point. But the streaming service also features a large collection of other films that have nothing to do with its major franchises – many of them movies Disney now owns after acquiring other Hollywood studios.
With this in mind, here’s our list of the best films on Disney Plus that aren’t Iron Man, Star Wars, Frozen or anything of that ilk. Encompassing just about every genre, there’s sure to be something to suit your taste if you’re struggling to decide what to watch this evening.
We’ll also keep this list updated as titles shuffle off and new ones are added.

Fans of A Murder at the End of the World rejoice! Brit Marling, who created the show with her longtime collaborator Zal Batmanglij, is game to take the limited series further. Possibly as far as Tokyo…
Marling is my guest this week on 20 Questions on Deadline.
She also starred in and co-created Netflix hit series The Oa and the films Sound of My Voice, Another Earth and The East with Batmanglij, and in this episode of the podcast, we discuss if there’s a next chapter for the End of the World protagonist Darby Hart—an amateur sleuth played by Emma Corrin.
At the end of the limited series on Hulu, Darby solved the murder of her ex-boyfriend Bill (Harris Dickinson) at an Iceland retreat run by tech billionaire Andy Ronson (Clive Owen). Marling, who, apart from writing and producing, also directs and stars as Ronson’s wife Lee Andersen,...

The iconic 2021 Amazon series Invincible can be dialed down in simple terms, as a kid having daddy issues. Except, his father is a psycho superhero, and he is a superhero, and they are both Viltrumites. But yeah, that’s pretty much the most dialed-down gist of the series.
We’re kidding. Of course, the series has much more depth to it than stated above and has multiple characters with spectacular storylines. Regardless, as per this theory, Mark Grayson might not be able to beat all the Viltrumites, but there is another superhero who can!
J. K. Simmons’ Omni-Man and Steven Yeun’s Invincible Mark Grayson May Not Be Strong Enough For The Viltrumites!
So to sum up the story of Invincible, we might have to face some superhero traumas alongside some daddy issues. To start off, Omni-Man (voiced by J.K. Simmons) is an alien from the race Viltrumites. That’s why he’s so powerful.

Brit Marling spent the summer of her junior year at Georgetown University interning at Goldman Sachs, an investment firm that this very publication once called “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity.” She ended that summer with a cushy job offer — only to reject it and, along with her pal Mike Cahill, head to Cuba to film a documentary about boxers and ballerinas caught in the middle of the U.S.-Cuba imbroglio. Marling drank from the capitalist cup, and it left a very bitter taste in her mouth.

Theories about the show range from it being a sequel to The Oa to characters being stuck in a time loop, adding excitement to future episodes. Clues suggest that Zoomer may be an AI robot created to protect humans from climate disasters, hinting at a possible hybrid future. The show's universe may be heading towards an imminent climate-change disaster, with Andy Ronson's hotel serving as a safe haven for selected survivors.
The expansive scope of A Murder at the End of the World's storyline has given birth to several fascinating theories. Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij have an established history of creating some of the strangest science fiction shows and movies, like Another Earth and Netflix's The Oa, which ambitiously explore metaphysics. A Murder at the End of the World creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij are a resilient duo. Instead of letting disappointment linger, the longtime creative partners quickly rebounded after the cancellation of their beloved genre-bender The Oa and channeled its many profound takeaways into their next story. The Netflix series struck a deep chord in viewers around the world, and seeing firsthand the community and energy that had formed around their work, Marling and Batmanglij further trusted their storytelling instincts until a new name rose to the top of their collective mind: Darby Hart.
Their FX on Hulu limited series chronicles past-and-present Darby (Emma Corrin), who’s an amateur sleuth turned true-crime author. She combines the hacking and investigative skills of Mr. Robot’s Elliot Alderson and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s Lisbeth Salander, with the death-adjacent upbringing of Six Feet Under‘s Claire Fisher. Brit Marling is an inspiration. The talented multi-hypenate became an indie darling in 2011 with Another Earth and Sound of My Voice—collaborations with Mike Cahill and Zal Batmanglij respectively. She avoided various vapid roles and unfulfilling career paths and instead went on to star in (and co-create with Batmanglii) the hit Netflix series The Oa, which was bafflingly cancelled after two seasons, despite a rabid and large fan base. A micro-budget and scrappy energy add charm to this quirky sci-fi tale in which unremarkable people watch over their charges
Peter (Scott Haran) is a former child chess prodigy who these days excels at nothing much in particular, except perhaps his ability to blend into the background. A birthday card at his office is handed to him to sign – for his own birthday. None of his colleagues know who he is, and the card is crammed with polite, anodyne messages. But he discovers that there’s one arena in which his anonymity might be a boon rather than a liability: he is recruited into the world of Bystanding, a parallel universe filled with invisible guardian types whose job is to imperceptibly guide or nudge their charges into making better life choices. They are all, in their own ways, as unremarkable as Peter, hence their selection for bystander duty.

Dumb Money is a sharp and funny film that tells the GameStop short squeeze story, skillfully balancing stock market knowledge and class warfare themes. Composer Will Bates created a unique electronic score for the film using innovative techniques and instrumentation that complemented the director's vision and editing style. Bates discusses his involvement in the project, his approach to the score, and his use of specific thematic elements and equipment, including the Suiko St-10, in creating the music for Dumb Money.
Dumb Money is a sharp and funny telling of the infamous 2021 GameStop short squeeze story. The film does a fantastic job of doling out just enough about the ins and outs of the stock market to be informative, but never loses sight of the class warfare at the heart of its story. Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Flash!
In recent years, the multiverse has been used in an increasing number of projects developed by Marvel and DC, bringing new realities to their superhero franchises, but bringing its fair share of problems too. The concept of the multiverse dates back to the Ancient Greek philosophers, posing that there are an infinite number of universes in a greater multiverse, each demonstrating an infinite number of variations on the known universe. The grandeur of this concept made it a hot topic of discussion for centuries, though it rose to prominence in the scientific community in the last hundred years, eventually making its way into the stories of Marvel and DC Comics.
The multiverse first became a prominent concept in superhero fiction in 1961's The Flash of Two Worlds, featured in DC Comics' The Flash #123, which saw Barry Allen travel to another universe and meet original Flash Jay Garrick.

Many swift and powerful speedsters have been adapted in DC Universe movies and TV shows. In DC Comics lore, Central City forensic scientist Barry Allen gains the power of super-speed after being soaked by chemicals that had been struck by lightning. This also allows Barry to tap into the Speed Force, which not only fuels his super-speed, but also empowers him with other abilities like time and multiverse travel. Barry uses his super-speed to become The Flash, but he is far from the only speedster in existence.
Barry's adventures have been adapted to both movies and television, with John Wesley Shipp, Grant Gustin, and Ezra Miller, and more portraying the Scarlet Speedster. Additionally, other heroic and villainous speedsters have also appeared on the big and small screens. Here are the 10 fastest speedsters seen in DC movies and TV shows.

While Lois and Clark try to balance their lives with the new normal of Lois’ cancer treatment going on, Henry Irons finds himself treading in deep water after getting in the way of Bruno Mannheim. In Episode 3 of “Superman & Lois” Season 3, after much back and forth and almost jeopardizing her own life, Lois finally agreed to go through the cancer treatment procedure. We are also informed by Bruno Mannheim about Clark’s blood being used to power ex-inmates like Henry Miller. In the Cushing family, an argument led to Lana slapping her daughter Sarah in the heat of the moment and immediately regretting it, but the damage has already been done as Sarah leaves her home and goes to her father, Kyle. The fourth episode sheds some light on the situation regarding all three families by allowing adequate space for three distinct plotlines.

Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.
On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.

This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Photo: ‘Bliss’/Amazon Studios Get ready for a mind-bending, reality questioning rollercoaster ride of a film that manipulates viewer expectations and breaks the traditions of Hollywood’s catering to general audiences. Writer and director of ‘Bliss’ Mike Cahill, whose last feature films ‘I Origins’ and ‘Another Earth’ were both sci-fi drama romances were received well critically, offers an interesting perspective to this sci-fi drama romance that’s stylistically unmatched by anything Amazon-produced, and pushes postmodern Cinematic techniques to a level that’s difficult to grasp for the viewer, but one must respect its creativity. The set design and lighting in just about every shot is beautiful and ranges from alluring color coordination to rugged worldly authenticity. This accompanied by the wonderful performances bring a quality to this film that makes it worth watching until the end, and sometimes even glosses over the flaws from the editing and futile plot points.

Come On, Get Happy: Cahill Finds Love in a Phoney Place with Simulation Sci-Fi
Director Mike Cahill has depended upon a higher degree of suspension of disbelief in his low-fi ponderings on human connections, so it’s no surprise his third feature Bliss demands the same open-mindedness of taking the subject matter seriously while forgiving the potentially uneven presentation. Starring Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek, it’s the most high-profile offering to date following the success of 2011’s Another Earth and the ambitious but somewhat flawed I, Origins (2014).
While the notable leads are somewhat distracting and uneasily navigate a forced chemistry, Cahill presents interesting and meaningful ideas about our innate need to experience opposing planes of emotions and situations to fully appreciate life as a complex continuum of connections.…...

With January finally, in your rear-view mirror, do you still feel part of a sluggish rut, as though one day just blends into the next with barely a change in course? With current events as they are, this may resonate with most folks. Some may wonder if there’s a switch that just needs to be flipped in order to “break out” and go to your “happy place”. That’s certainly true of the hero of a new flick. He’s in a miserable “fog” that seems to haunt his every second. Luckily a chance meeting (or is it) meeting provides that “push” that jolts him out of the mundane and into, what seems, a state of pure Bliss.
That unlikely hero mentioned earlier is Greg Wittle (Owen Wilson), who’s an executive in a big company headquartered in a sprawling urban area. He spends most of his days avoiding...

It’s easy to understand why Greg would seek another existence. He’s a middle manager in the “Technical Difficulties” department, an office bathed in harsh fluorescent light and filled with employees who only know how to trill “I’m sorry!” He has a ruined marriage, no home, no social stimulation, and little else that might anchor him to this mortal coil. What does bring joy to Greg (a miscast Owen Wilson) are the pictures he can’t stop drawing, with lush landscapes that portray a home and a woman he doesn’t recognize but that he feels are real. What if, Mike Cahill’s “Bliss” supposes, those things are real and all this trauma is a simulation created to make “real” Greg appreciate his life even more?

Salma Hayek stars in the new indie “Bliss” as a mysterious homeless woman named Isabel who befriends a man (Owen Wilson) who has just lost his job. Written and directed by Mike Cahill (“Another Earth” and “I Origins”), nothings nothing is as clear as it may seem in the film. Isabel is not only a drug addict, but she believes she’s living in one world while another version of herself, a scientist, lives in the much better “bliss world.”
“I was a fan of Mike’s work,” Hayek says on this week’s episode of the new Variety podcast “Just for Variety.” “I got a call from my agent who said, ‘Mike Cahill has a film and he wants you for the lead.’ And I go, “I love him.” They said, “He’s the director that did this and that movie.’ I said, ‘I know who he is. Are you kidding me?...

Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek star in a conceited mess of a movie with a guessable finish
There is some epically bad acting in this silly and tiresome sci-fi fantasy-mystery from writer-director Mike Cahill, whose renowned debut Another Earth in 2011 left me sceptical, yet intrigued. But this is a conceited mess, which almost from the very first frame tips you off that we are heading for some version of the time-honoured cheat/twist ending that has – admittedly – been with cinema since its earliest days and attracted some of the biggest directorial names.

The biggest challenge of discussing Mike Cahill’s “Bliss” lies in describing its premise without making it sound considerably wilder and more interesting than it actually is. In short, the film stars Owen Wilson as a sad-sack office drone who, after accidentally killing his boss, is rescued by an intense, shamanistic homeless woman played by Salma Hayek, who not only informs him that they are soulmates, but also that they are among the few flesh-and-blood humans inhabiting a complex computer simulation, and by imbibing the right combinations of colorful crystals they can bend the laws of physics, and also travel to a paradisiacal alternate reality where their days consist of lounging on yachts and hobnobbing at parties with Bill Nye and a holographic Slavoj Žižek. See? Sounds intriguing enough, doesn’t it?
Now imagine a strangely dull, lead-footed treatment of that premise, and you’ve got some idea of what...

“You and I,” the lead single and video from the soundtrack to the Amazon original sci-fi film, “Bliss” starring Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek, premieres exclusively on Variety today, one week ahead of the film’s Feb. 5 release on Prime Video.
The song is written by the film’s composer, Will Bates, and features the unmistakable vocals of Morcheeba’s Skye Edwards. “Bliss” sees Bates once again reuniting with director Mike Cahill, with whom he has worked on all of Cahill’s directing projects.
“This was my first experience with a full orchestra,” said Bates. Starting in music as a jazz saxophonist then as an electronic artist and later as the frontperson for a rock band, all of Bates’ talents and musical connections come together for “You and I.”
Said Bates: “We had the idea of there being a song that melodically incorporated the love theme. I’ve known Skye Edwards for years,...

Following his indie sci-fi features Another Earth and I Origins, director Mike Cahill has spent the last few years helming TV but now he’s back with his third narrative feature, once again delving into sci-fi. Bliss, set to arrive on Amazon Prime on February 5, follows an unfulfilled man (Owen Wilson) and a mysterious woman (Salma Hayek) who believe they are living in a simulated reality. But when their newfound ‘Bliss’ world begins to bleed into the ‘ugly’ world they must decide what’s real and where they truly belong. Ahead of the release, the trailer has now arrived.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day comes the movie Bliss from Amazon Prime Video, starring Owen Wilson, Salma Hayek, and Nesta Cooper.
Bliss is a mind-bending love story following Greg (Owen Wilson) who, after recently being divorced and then fired, meets the mysterious Isabel (Salma Hayek), a woman living on the streets and convinced that the polluted, broken world around them is nothing but a computer simulation. Doubtful at first, Greg eventually discovers there may be some truth to Isabel’s wild conspiracy.
The director, who I’m a big fan of, is Mike Cahill. When it comes to sci-fi films, I’m your geek and this filmmaker has done two inspiring movies from the genre.
His first feature film as director, co-written with actress Brit Marling, Another Earth, about a parallel planet Earth, won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was picked up...

Providing Sundance with slices of sci-fi theories in a pair of editions with Another Earth in 2011 and I Origins in 2014, auteur Mike Cahill had the opportunity to work on a larger canvas for his third outing. Working with the likes of Salma Hayek and Owen Wilson back in June of 2019 for a production that took place in Croatia, Bliss is a property of Amazon Studios. In-between features, Cahill worked on a quartet of television series. On this project he worked with cinematographer Markus Förderer.

Actress, writer, and producer Brit Marling’s most artistically successful vehicles have been the ones she driven herself, from films like “Another Earth” and “Sound of My Voice” (which she wrote and starred in) to the Netflix series “The Oa,” which she co-created with Zal Batmanglij (and also wrote and starred in). That’s because, as she revealed in a recent New York Times op-ed, other roles she’s either lost out on or declined have fallen into a category she’s working to resist: the Strong Female Lead.
“She’s an assassin, a spy, a soldier, a superhero, a CEO. She can make a wound compress out of a maxi pad while on the lam. She’s got MacGyver’s resourcefulness but looks better in a tank top,” Marling writes. Indeed, the complicated, often messy women she’s written and portrayed in her films and on “The Oa” (cancelled...

Salma Hayek and Owen Wilson have signed on to star in Amazon’s science-fiction drama “Bliss,” with Mike Cahill directing from his own script.
Wilson portrays a recently divorced man whose life is falling apart when he meets Hayek’s character, a woman who lives on the streets and is convinced that the polluted, broken world around them is not real. She believes they are living in an ugly, harsh simulated world inside of the beautiful, peaceful “real” world of bliss.
Endgame Entertainment’s James D. Stern is producing, with the company’s Lucas Smith serving as executive producer. Marsha Swinton will also executive produce. Production began this week in Los Angeles.
Cahill directed “Another Earth” and “I Origins,” which were released by Fox Searchlight. Both films won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize at the Sundance Film Festival where they premiered.

Before Jason Isaacs would talk about the Season 2 finale of “The Oa,” he made a request. “The problem with talking about a Netflix show is, unlike a TV show — which is broadcast on a Thursday night or whatever — there are many millions of people around the world who will be watching this next month, next year, in six months time,” he said. “So, only if you promise me that you have a big spoiler alert up there and you have to scroll down before you get to any of the text that reveals it, will I talk to you, because otherwise you’ll ruin it for the viewer.”
And this worried him because, “I want the audience’s mind to be blown as much as it was when I was first told what was gonna happen. I was reeling from it.”

And so the calendar closes on yet another TV year. As critics start to assemble year-end best lists and look forward to what the next 12 months might have in store, there’s still a final flurry of new original programming to sift through before 2018 fades away.
Per usual, these are spread out across broadcast, cable, and subscription services, this time with an extra peppering of original films debuting on TV airtime. With plenty of other options to juggle as 2018 closes, allow this one final collection to cap off the bunch.
(We do this roundup of new shows pretty much every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, April, May, June, July, August, October, November, and our giant fall preview.)

Two brothers return to the ‘UFO death cult’ camp where they were raised in this thoughtful indie sci-fi
A mind-bending Möbius strip of a movie, this indie sci-fi makes up for what it lacks in budget with a wealth of playful ideas. It’s a two-man show – directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead also star in the film (which was written by Benson), as Justin and Aaron, a pair of brothers who escaped what Justin describes as a “UFO death cult” as children. Life in the real world, however, seems grimly disappointing compared with that in Camp Arcadia; a washed-out grey-green colour palette speaks volumes. So at the insistence of Aaron, the pair return to the camp for a visit. And confronted with an idyll of beautiful people bonding around the campfire, Aaron starts to question why they ever left.

Composer Will Bates knew from the get-go that scoring “The Looming Tower” would be a daunting task. “It seemed kind of clear that of all the things that I’ve worked on, this was going to be the largest in terms of the scope of work and the level of detail that it really needed,” he reveals. Based on Lawrence Wright‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning nonfiction book, this Hulu limited series starring Jeff Daniels, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg and Bill Camp recounts the events leading up to the al-Qaeda terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Bates knew he had his work cut out for him because 9/11 is “something that, to some extent, all of us have lived through.”
