The film is based on Mochtar Lubis's novel Jalan Tak Ada Ujung, a book first published in 1952 and widely regarded as Lubis' best work.
The film began production in late 2019 with a planned 2020 release. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Surya's commitment to make "Trigger Warning" for Netflix, production was delayed several years and finally resumed in 2023.
