Way back in 1986, when "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was still in development, the original casting sheets called for actresses to play a 15-year-old character named Leslie Crusher, the daughter of Dr. Beverly Crusher. "Her remarkable mind and photographic memory," the character rundown read, "make it seem not unlikely for her to become, at 15, a Starfleet acting-ensign. Otherwise, she is a normal teenager." As casting and development continued, however, Leslie was transformed into a teenage boy named Wesley, and more closely modeled after Gene Roddenberry's own 15-year-old self (Roddenberry's middle name is Wesley).
Wesley wasn't widely liked by Trekkies, as he seemed too much like a brown-noser. He was too eager to please the adults in his life, too well-behaved, and definitely too smart. Fans point to the instances wherein a teenage boy, working with the best and brightest in Starfleet, managed to be the only one to solve a massively difficult space conundrum.

Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions TV show mixes drama and mystery in a modern version of the 1999 movie of the same name, and some movies and TV shows make for an excellent companion watch thanks to their similar themes and stories. Based on the 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses and Roger Kumble’s 1999 movie, Cruel Intentions follows wealthy step-siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess). Caroline knows that, if Annie joins her sorority, Delta Phi, it will be safe, but she needs Lucien’s help. They make a deal: Lucien has to seduce Annie and sleep with her so they can lure her into Delta Phi, and if Lucien achieves this, Caroline will finally sleep with him, but if he fails,...

Cruel Intentions star Brooke Lena Johnson, who portrays Beatrice Worth, has shared new insights about the direction of season 2. The Prime Video series reimagines the 1999 cult classic film, which itself was based on the 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The show explores themes of manipulation and ambition among a new generation of characters. Season 1 introduced Beatrice as a fiery student who challenges the system of sororities and fraternities, making her a key character in the show's complex landscape. Cruel Intentions Star Brooke Lena Johnson Breaks Down Beatrice's Schemes & Shares Hopes For Season 2
Cruel Intentions, Prime Video's reboot of the cult classic 1999 film, is out in the wild, and fans are having a feast, eating up all the scandalous and salacious schemes of the depraved students at Manchester College, where young sociopaths are groomed to become the future leaders of America. Thankfully, all the manipulations and backbiting are handled with a satirical edge and comedic sensibilities that keep the show from getting too upsetting or disturbing for viewers.
The ensemble cast of Cruel Intentions includes Brooke Lena Johnson, who plays Beatrice Worth, a fiery student who decides to take on the entire "Greek System" of frat and sorority houses. She's motivated partially out of populist righteousness, but also petty revenge, since she wasn't allowed membership into her favored sorority house.

Prime Video's TV reboot of Cruel Intentions follows the students of Manchester College, an elite academy populated by manipulators, sociopaths, and their unwitting victims. Based on the cult classic 1999 film of the same name, as well as the original 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Cruel Intentions uses humor and its sharp satirical edge to cut through to the heart of its characters, users who don't care how many lives they ruin in their petty pursuit of political power.
Most of the Cruel Intentions cast are hot college students, but exceptions include Jon Tenney and Claire Forlani, who star as hot middle-aged parents. Tenney plays Congressman Russell, the father of Scott Russell (Khobe Clarke), while Forlani plays Claudia, the mother of Caroline (Sarah Catherine Hook) and stepmother to Lucien (Zac Burgess). While ostensibly the adults in the room, that doesn't necessarily mean they're more evolved than their children.

Prime Video's Cruel Intentions takes the basic blueprint of the 1999 film, based on the 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and expands it into an eight-episode debut season. The series follows the students of Manchester College, a group of lying, scheming, duplicitous, manipulative brats who will one day become the future politicians and leaders of America.
Cruel Intentions hails from showrunners Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, who previously held the reins on Prime Video's I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. Fisher also co-wrote the deliciously sassy 2023 comedy, Down Low, while Goodman is no stranger to scheming young people, having written over a dozen episodes of the classic YA series, Gossip Girl, a series which certainly shares some DNA with Cruel Intentions.

When Amy Heckerling scored a teen comedy hit in 1995 with "Clueless" by working from the Jane Austen's 1816 novel "Emma," Hollywood figured there might be a potential goldmine in youth-skewing films based on classic works of fiction. Gil Junger certainly found this to be the case with "10 Things I Hate About You," his high school-set take on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," while Robert Iscove scored a box office hit with his "Pygmalion" riff "She's All That." So it wasn't all that shocking when Roger Kumble found intrigue and no shortage of sex appeal via "Cruel Intentions," his scheming rich kids reworking of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' "Les Liaisons dangereuses."

Prime Video has now debuted its TV show remake of the 1999 cult classic film Cruel Intentions, both of which share plot overlap with an Oscar-winning 1988 Keanu Reeves movie. With shows like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Mr & Mrs Smith, and Cross, Amazon Prime Videos original TV show slate is on a streak of reimagining hit 1990s and 2000s movies as modern series. Cruel Intentions is the latest title to join this trend, which adjusts the 1999 Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Reese Witherspoon drama to follow a pair of status-focused wealthy step-siblings at college.

Cruel Intentions' Debut Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Barely Half Of Sarah Michelle Gellar's Cult Classic
Prime Videos Cruel Intentions reboot series is off to a lackluster start, attracting a dismal Rotten Tomatoes rating that is barely half of the original movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Serving as a modernized retelling of the 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, plans for a TV show based on the 1999 film began almost as soon as it was released. While the earliest plans for a Cruel Intentions show would eventually morph into 2000s direct-to-video sequel, NBC would pass on a TV adaptation in 2015, only for Prime Video to pick it up in late 2021.
With all eight episodes of Cruel Intentions season 1 now available on Prime Video, the majority of the initial reviews for the property's latest television reboot have not been favorable. Cruel Intentions follows the students of Manchester College, and the malicious games of seduction they play for their own amusement and the joy of wreaking havoc with people's lives. The Prime Video series is based on the 1999 film of the same name, which is, in turn, based on the 1782 French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
Cruel Intentions' lead characters, Caroline and Lucien (Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess), are step-siblings who make a bet involving the sexual fate of Annie Grover, the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. As their depraved games get more and more out of hand, with more and more students roped into playing roles as pawns in their plot, the siblings must decide just how far they are willing to go to consolidate their power in Manchester College. While the characters are certainly despicable in their own way, Cruel Intentions...

In its 240 years, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ once scandalous (and at one point, banned) 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ has been adapted around 30 times for various stage, radio, and screen productions across five continents. Yet for many, Roger Kumble’s Cruel Intentions has remained one of its most popular retellings.
The 1999 movie spin on a pair of lovers-turned-rivals who destroy each other through their cruel manipulations of the unsuspecting French aristocracy reimagines the unscrupulous members of the French nobility into two competitive (and sexually enamored) teenage step-siblings, Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe). As part of a jealousy-driven bet that begins with ruining their new classmate Cecile (Selma Blair), the duo finds the stakes of their contest flamed by the arrival of the disarmingly kind and principled Annette (Reese Witherspoon), the daughter of their affluent Upper East Side high school’s headmaster.

Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions (2024) is yet another modern retelling of the French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Frankly, if we’re being serious, it’s really a remake of the Roger Kumble film of the same name, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair, which came out a quarter of a century ago.
Now, we live in a world of TikTok and Instagram, where people can be cruel at the tap of a screen. This is a story where Cruel Intentions hits its authentic target audience in the age of social media. The result is an adaptation made for the streaming era—additive, highly bingeable, and with a wicked sense of itself.

Teenage dramas have existed for as long as teens have been drumming up drama in schools and colleges. In the ’60s, there were Because They’re Young and Where the Boys Are. The ‘70s had American Graffiti, Grease, and Saturday Night Fever. The genre exploded in the ‘80s with movies like Dead Poets Society, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And the ‘90s gave us The Basketball Diaries, Rushmore, 10 Things I Hate About You, and American Pie. But I think the movie that paved the way for stuff like Gossip Girl, Young Royals, 13 Reasons Why, Elite, Class, Euphoria, Maxton Hall, Hierarchy, and Untamed Royals was the cult classic, Cruel Intentions. It had adult actors playing high schoolers. It was filled to the brim with the risque stuff. And there was a lot of backstabbing and drugs involved. Since this particular subgenre of teen dramas is all the rage now,...

The original Cruel Intentions, an adaptation of the 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, was one of my most memorable films growing up. It was sadistic, it had sexual tension, master manipulation, villainous step-siblings, and a small sprinkle of romance. Prime Videos Cruel Intentions series, developed by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, attempts to replicate what made the 1999 movie so memorable (and quotable) but smartly takes its own less merciless path and adds new elements. The main players and their goals are more or less the same, but theres less verve and danger in the execution.

Amazon’s new Cruel Intentions television series is completely pointless, which isn’t the worst of sins, but isn’t much of a virtue either.
Roger Kumble’s 1999 film of the same title took Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ frequently adapted Les Liaisons Dangereuses and gave it a modern spin which, if nothing else, understood a lot of what was so pointedly twisty about it. The movie delivered some satisfying, dirty fun in a tight 97 minutes, with a spectacular cast that easily smoothed over any bumps in the thematically muddled story.
Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman’s Amazon series takes the potent premise, with its backstabbing and sexual hijinks, and mostly just manages to stretch it out across an eight-episode season — and presumably beyond, since very little is resolved by the finale. Its attempts to update the already updated tale are mostly hollow, and its ensemble of pretty young actors mostly forgettable.

The 18th century French novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” has withstood dozens of adaptations to stage and screen, including the prestigious 1988 film “Dangerous Liaisons” and the cheesy yet beloved 1999 teen film “Cruel Intentions.”
With Prime Video’s new eight-part “Cruel Intentions” series remake, author Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ story finally hits the wall. Here, both setting and story seem outdated, with the writers’ bids to stay true to skeevier elements of the novel and (especially) 1999 movie conflicting with attempts to update storylines for a modern audience.
The show opens at a stately, vaguely Southern-looking mansion filled with overdressed young women — a promising start for fans of the similarly sorority-set “Scream Queens” or of “American Horror Story: Coven,” or even “The Bachelor.”
But the new “Cruel Intentions” does not yield any supernatural or crime thriller chills, or even enough backstabbing among romantic rivals to inspire us to pick a side. Instead, it...

1999's Cruel Intentions belongs in the same bracket as the epoch-defining Clueless, and 10 Things I Hate About You; modern retellings of classic literature that made accessibility the focus of their reinvention. Like the other two, Cruel Intentions goes for a school-age cast, though the school environment is less present, and the story instead focuses on a tight bubble of elite society where everyone is as rich as they are deceitful, and absolutely everyone seems right on the cusp of having sex with each other.
The story is a fairly straightforward thing that focuses on a web of deceit and manipulation woven by two New York step-siblings, played by Ryan Phillipe and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, the very '90s retelling positions Gellar as the grand manipulator, and Phillipe as the destructive cad, who set out to destroy other people's lives for the sake of sport,...

And it found an eager audience instantly, spawning a prequel in 2000, a 2004 sequel, and a musical in 2015.

Selma Blair’s teen son Arthur has crossed a major first off his list: he’s finally watched one of his mom’s movie’s, something Blair told People she’s tried — and failed — to get him to do for years. Unfortunately, she added, the 13-year-old watched “Cruel Intentions.”
Blair explained, “I mean, I’ve tried, he’s never watched. But with a girl, he’ll watch ‘Cruel Intentions,’ and I was like, ‘Oh dear.'”
Arthur also mimicked an explicit gesture that her character performed in the movie. “He’s like, ‘Mom, what was that?’ Because my character Cecile does it. It was naughty. It was naughty, is my point.”
Ultimately, she continued, her son liked the film.

If the golden era of the high school movie was the 1980s, packed with John Hughes’ tales of wistful outsider girls and horny nerds, then mid-late ‘90s was the reprise. This was the era of Valley Girls (Clueless), the make-over movie, and of course modern updates of classic literature. Cruel Intentions fits into this category and takes it to the next level. It’s a teen high school movie full of shagging and spitefulness which has genuine consequences and treats its characters like adults, while allowing them the naivety of youth. It’s 25 years old, and it’s still sexy as fuck.
Based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ which was filmed memorably as 1988’s Dangerous Liaisons, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, Cruel Intentions had wonderfully salacious material to work with but big shoes to fill.

Some new faces are set to hit Middle-Earth. “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has added seven new cast members for its second season, which is currently in production in the United Kingdom.
Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen Atour, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, Ben Daniels, Nicholas Woodeson, and Sam Hazeldine have been cast in the series, which serves as a prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy series. Hazeldine replaces Joseph Mawle, who played the Ork leader Adar in the first season of the series; a reason for the casting change was not given. The other new cast members’ roles are currently being kept under wraps, but all of them join the show in a recurring capacity.
Akuwudike has appeared in the TV series “Hanna,” “Ridley Road,” and “War of the Worlds,” along with the films “1917” and “Brexit.” Atour was a cast member in Season 2 of Netflix’s “The Witcher,...

Pierre Choderolas de Laclos’ 1782 epistolary novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” has proven to be incredibly malleable over the last few decades. In addition to the 1988, Stephen Frears-directed Christopher Hampton adapted “Dangerous Liaisons,” we’ve gotten the stately “Valmont” and even the glorious camp of “Cruel Intentions.” Needless to say, the world was perhaps not clamoring for another look into the backstabbing lives of the Marquise de Merteuil and her sometimes lover/enemy, Valmont.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is opening up about the Cruel Intentions reboot NBC passed on and why she’s grateful the pilot was not picked up to series.
The peacock network gave it a pilot order in February 2016 but announced in October of that same year that it was not moving forward with the show. Gellar had signed on to reprise her role of Kathryn Merteuil but ultimately felt the new take didn’t live up to the 1999 film.
“That was a whole crazy time,” she told the New York Times. “Nothing against NBC, but Cruel Intentions is straight streaming. On the first day, I was like, ‘This isn’t working.’ It’s just not a network show. And if it is a network show, it’s not my Cruel Intentions. So, I was actually grateful.”
