Colm Meaney, who played Miles O’Brien on both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, was honored on February 14 with the Irish Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to him by the Irish Film & Television Academy. Among those paying tribute to the actor was his longtime friend and Star Trek co-star and director, Jonathan Frakes.
During his time on Star Trek, especially during his DS9 era with the franchise, Meaney took time off to appear in a wide range of features in America and abroad. His seemingly endless list of credits, which saw him portray good guys and bad guys, and tackle both supporting roles and leads, includes The Dead, Die Hard 2, The Commitments, Under Siege, The Last of the Mohicans, Con Air, The Van, Hell on Wheels (in which he co-starred with future Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' lead Anson Mount), Tolkien, Gangs of London,...

Jennifer Lopez does not have the best reputation in the film industry. Several of her acting performances have been considered abysmal, as she has been a part of some really bad films. Most infamously this includes Gigli, a 2003 Ben Affleck movie that achieved a mere 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. Other Lopez films, such as The Boy Next Door, Feel the Noise, Jack, and The Wedding Planner have also managed to get Tomatometers that are under 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. In critics' eyes, Lopez has had a very rotten streak.
This is not true of every Lopez movie, however, as she has been in some projects that were critical darlings. Her music documentaries are generally fairly well-received, including The Greatest Love Story Never Told, which has a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The 1998 crime drama Out of Sight got a universally positive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Lopez's performance in Hustlers was also praised back in 2019, and it got an 88% Tomatometer.

Mark Wahlberg's career has been incredibly varied. On the one hand, he has worked with some highly influential directors in critically acclaimed films. His breakout role was playing Eddie / Dirk in Boogie Nights, an epic drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. This role earned him buzz, but it was not until a decade later that he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for The Departed. Wahlberg also got a nomination for his producing work on The Fighter, which was nominated for Best Picture.
While these critically acclaimed films have been part of Wahlberg's career, he is also an actor capable of making a big box office hit. His top movie at the worldwide box office was Transformers: Age of Extinction, followed by Transformers: The Last Knight. Several other movies of Wahlberg's have made hundreds of millions of dollars, bringing his aggregate career gross to over $5 billion.

Ted Lasso Star’s Comedy Sequel With 36% Rotten Tomatoes Score Finds Streaming Success 11 Years Later
Ted Lasso is one of Apple TV+'s most successful shows to date. It won 13 Emmys across three seasons, and was nominated for several more that it did not win. Ted Lasso also received great reviews from both critics and audiences, getting fresh Rotten Tomatoes scores every season. The overall series holds a 90% Tomatometer from critics and an 85% score from audiences. Ted Lasso season 3 was considered the end by some series creators, but the show has still remained open for season 4.
Ted Lasso has an ensemble cast, but at the heart of it all is Jason Sudeikis, who won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series twice for the role. While the unskilled football coach has become his most celebrated role, the comedic actor had a career long before this. A controversial romance movie with a Game of Thrones star has become a streaming success. The show was a launching point for many of its cast members. One such talent was Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen in the George R.R. Martin fantasy adaptation across all eight seasons. Clarke was 24 years old when she made her debut as part of the Game of Thrones cast in 2011. Prior to the HBO series, her only roles had been a single episode of the TV series Doctors, the short film Drop the Dog, and a part in the TV movie Triassic Attack.
Game of Thrones was life-changing for Clarke. She was nominated for four Emmys for the series, including three for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and one for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Ryan Gosling occupies a unique space in Hollywood, as he's about as equally well known for his work in major blockbusters as he is for smaller movies. He was best known to many viewers for a long time as one of the stars of The Notebook (2004), but he would go on to become known for titles across a variety of genres, including movies like Drive (2011), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012).
The mid-2010s saw Gosling star in a number of notable movies that, even if they were always box office successes, they showed his range as a performer. La La Land (2016) remains one of his biggest hits from the era, but he also appeared in cult classic The Nice Guys (2016), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), and First Man (2018). Liam Neeson has had quite an interesting career over the last few decades. Early in his career, he became an Oscar-nominated actor, recognized for his work in the leading role in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List. He has also received Golden Globe nominations for Michael Collins and Kinsey. As such, many of his works have been critically acclaimed, including Everest, Widows, Husbands and Wives, Ponyo, and Batman Begins. Thus, Neeson is a well-respected and acclaimed actor of his generation.
However, Neeson's career has also been saturated with action movies that are poorly reviewed, including Blacklight, Taken 3, and Men in Black: International. In addition, many of his films have disappointed at the box office. Despite receiving positive reviews, the pre-covid Ordinary Love made less than $1 million at the worldwide box office. His recent 2024 film Absolution also struggled at the box office, getting just $3.4 million. However, another 2024 movie starring Neeson is...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced on Monday the 207 feature films eligible for Best Picture consideration, two days before voting for the 2025 Oscar nominations begins.

Liam Neeson has been in a wide range of projects. On the one hand, he is a prominent actor in the action film world. He led the Taken franchise, where he played a father in desperate search of his kidnapped daughter. His two most recent films have also been action-based, including Absolution and In the Land of Saints and Sinners. The actor is known for his intensity in roles like this, making him a well-suited lead for high-octane action.
On the other hand, Neeson has also been a part of a number of award-winning movies. He was nominated for an Oscar for his lead role in Schindler's List, a movie that has been regarded as one of Spielberg's best. Liam Neeson may not have started out as an action star, but he is certainly considered one now. Though Neeson's '90s and early 2000s career did have a handful of action movies, including Rob Roy (1995), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), and Batman Begins (2005), he was just as well known for non-action roles in projects like Schindler's List (1993) and Love Actually (2003). Neeson's career shifted, however, after the release of Taken in 2009.
Taken spawned two less successful sequels, but it also set Neeson down a unique action path. Neeson became the starring figure in a number of mid-budget action movies, with the films usually built around his casting. Notable entries in Neeson's action career include movies like Unknown (2011), The Grey (2011), Non-Stop (2014), A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014), Cold Pursuit (2019), The Ice Road (2021), and In the Land of Saints and Sinners (2023). Many Neeson action movies come and go with little fanfare, and such was the case for one 2015 film.

Thanksgiving has long been a deadline of sorts for studios campaigning for Oscar nominations, because it offers the tempting proposition of a holiday weekend in which voters might have free time to catch up on movies. In past years, that meant a steady stream of screener DVDs arriving in voters’ mailboxes in the days before Thanksgiving – but now, with the Academy focusing on its members-only screening platform and placing restrictions on physical screeners, the push is to get new films into the Academy Screening Room before the holiday.
Fifteen new films were added to that room on Wednesday, a departure from the usual weekly additions, which typically come every Friday. The Last Rifleman is one of those films from a genre I have often described as “a movie.” It was made for that lazy Sunday afternoon that makes you appreciate what you have or long for what you don’t. This British war drama, which Sky Films has finally dusted off, is now allowing the rest of the world to see it. This is welcomed because The Last Rifleman is a good genre picture.
That’s because Terry Loane’s (In the Land of Saints and Sinners) The Last Rifleman has a bevy of quality messaging that also happens to be highly entertaining. Along with a touching central performance from a well-known movie star and some cameos from the late John Amos in his last film role, it’s a movie experience that is funny, moving, and, above all else, satisfying.

The holiday movie season may be getting off to a slow start over the next few weeks, but that’s not due to the lack of star power or Oscar hopefuls. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
What’s a little strange about this November kick-off weekend is that there are not one, not two, but three movies from filmmakers who have directed movies that won Best Picture at the Oscars. And yet, only one of them is getting a wide theatrical release and is bound to report box office.
That movie is “Here,” based on the graphic novel by Richard McGuire. It reunites “Forrest Gump” director Robert Zemeckis with two of his stars, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, as well as Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth, for a unique family drama that essentially keeps the camera in place to show the events of a specific Philly location over time.

While he has perfectly proven his charms in other genres like 1993’s war-drama Schindler’s List, 1999’s family-sci-fi Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and 2003’s rom-com Love Actually as well, Liam Neeson’s performance in the action genre still dominates all. To say the least, action films are the one thing he is better known for than most.

Liam Neeson has to be one of the busiest guys in the business. Next week sees the release of his crime drama, Absolution, in which he plays an aging mobster looking to make amends with his family before his time is up. Next summer, he’s got his remake of The Naked Gun coming out – which should (hopefully) allow him to branch out into comedy. But he’s also got a whole bunch of other action flicks set for release in 2025, including The Ice Road 2, Cold Storage, Hotel Tehran, and even more in the works. However, given that he recently turned seventy-two, Neeson is giving serious thought to slowing down, with him recently saying in an interview that he’s calling it quits pretty soon, stating, “Maybe the end of next year. I think that’s it.”
Now, it has to be said that this isn’t the first time Neeson has toyed with retirement.

Liam Neeson's upcoming film Absolution continues a trend that started nearly two decades ago in one of his most iconic films. Neeson, who turned 72 in 2024, is keeping up his momentum as one of the best leading actors in action movies working in Hollywood today with 2024's Absolution. Many of Neeson's best action films are essentially one-person army tales that portray the talented actor's physical tour-de-force performances. Absolution appears to fit right in that category.
The trailer of Absolution stars Neeson as an aging gangster trying to escape his dark past. The film, directed by Hans Peter Moland and written by Tony Gayton, also stars Ron Perlman, Frankie Shaw, and Daniel Diemer. Neeson, an Academy Award nominee for 1993's Schindler's List, has nearly 200 television and movie acting credits to his name after making his feature film debut in 1978's Pligrim's Progress.

The character of Transporter Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) first appeared in "Encounter at Farpoint," the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." For many episodes, he was basically a background character, usually present to deliver a line or two of techno-jargon and to beam the senior staff from the ship to a planet and back. With each appearance, though, audiences began to get more details about O'Brien's life. He used to build ships in bottles as a boy, for instance. O'Brien would marry and have a child. All told, O'Brien appeared in 52 episodes of the show, sometimes starring in his own stories.
The character became popular enough to be carried over to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" in 1993, on which he was a regular character. On "Deep Space Nine," O'Brien became even more awesome, serving as the chief engineer on the station, having to familiarize himself with dated Cardassian technology,...

Tom Glynn-Carney plays King Aegon II Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, and his epic portrayal of the famed villain has earned the character so much contempt from the viewers. Despite the hate train on Aegon, the actor admits to never having any negative encounters with fans.
Tom Glynn-Carney in House of the Dragon / HBO
This wasn’t the case with Joffrey actor Jack Gleeson from Game of Thrones. He played the wicked young king for three years, and within that span of time, he received so much hate that it led to speculation for his early retirement from acting.
Tom Glynn-Carney Gets Spared From The Hate Despite Playing Aegon
During an interview with Vestal Magazine, actor Tom Glynn-Carney talked about his experience playing King Aegon in House of the Dragon. He was aware of the consequences his portrayal might gain him, but he was glad none of those negative expectations happened.

Liam Neeson’s career took a turn by the beginning of 2009 after his one film propelled him to the status of an action star. From 2008-2014, Neeson starred in three films in the Taken franchise, where he plays former CIA operative Bryan Mills. However, Neeson has one major regret in the film which made fans fall in love with the film in the first place.

During the filming of Taken, Neeson’s driver pointed out the amount of killing he does in the film. Neeson was embarrassed by the driver’s question even though all his kills in the film were bad guys.

And just like that, 2024 is already half over. Crazy, isn’t it? It feels like Christmas was just a minute ago, but here we are in the middle of summertime. Before we know it, the fall festivals will open up, the awards race will begin, and people will start debating the year’s best movies.
But here’s the thing – whenever people start talking about the best movies of the year, they always neglect all of the films that came out in the first half of the year. Studios know this, which is why high-profile, prestigious movies always bow in the fourth quarter of the year. So, to give these movies a bit of a spotlight, we here at JoBlo have decided to list the 10 best movies of 2024…so far (in no particular order).

Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” is a certified hit for Netflix, and a rare one: It’s an original film that’s critically acclaimed as well as a popular success.
Meanwhile on PVOD, Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” dominated “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho) not only in theaters (more than three times the gross) but also in home interest.
“Civil War” (A24) is #1 again at iTunes in its fourth week of availability (#2 at Fandango), a remarkably strong showing for a film with a strong but sub-$70 million domestic box office take.
“Hit Man” has led Netflix’s most-watched movie list for 10 days, the first film to do so since 2023 Netflix production “Leave the World Behind” starring Julia Roberts; it held the spot for 13 days last December. We await word on actual viewing minutes, which it recently touted for “Atlas” with Jennifer Lopez. Already, “Hit Man” has more days...

For the first time ever, a film streaming on Netflix (free for subscribers) and available on VOD ($5.99 for 48 hours) is #1 on both charts.
Toho’s late-2023 sleeper success and eventual Oscar Visual Effects winner, “Godzilla Minus One” achieved that feat with a totally unexpected and previously unannounced release on Saturday.
The film, released in early December to an unexpected U.S./Canada gross of $56 million, normally would have hit PVOD for rental for $19.99 by late January, been reduced to $5.99 after a few weeks, then found a streaming home. But because of vaguely defined agreements with Legendary Entertainment, Toho’s partner in making Warner Bros.’ costlier Godzilla films, the March opening of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” led to the early-February termination of theatrical dates for “Minus One.” That came despite the Toho film still doing business (and ahead of the Oscars). Then, Warner’s “Godzilla x Kong” could play without “Minus One” as competition.

Fang Flanagan. That’s who Liam Neeson is going to be playing in his next action role, in the film Mongoose. More here.
Another deal from Cannes Film Festival has been announced and it looks like Liam Neeson is signing up for some cross country vehicular mayhem.
The Taken (pictured) star once expressed some concern that his upcoming comedic turn in The Naked Gun remake (currently in production) could signal the end of his career and as unlikely as that might seem, should it prove to be the case, there’s no need to worry because Liam Neeson will at the very least get to make Mongoose.
But what is Mongoose? Glad you asked. Mongoose is a cross country car chase movie, starring the undisputed king of the action thriller. This time, Liam Neeson stars as the wonderfully-named ‘Ryan “Fang” Flanagan, a war hero who, accused of a crime he...

Produced by Warren Derosa and Zsófia Kende, “Desperate Journey” is based on the true story of Freddie Knoller (played by Tønnesen), a young man forced to flee Vienna as Nazi hysteria takes hold. Home viewing charts inspire deja vu: “Anyone but You,” a hit as a PVOD release, just debuted at Netflix. It knocked out Netflix’s expensive “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” from first place after two weeks, falling to #6.
Similarly, “Dune: Part Two” returned for its second week as #1 at both iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (which calculates by revenue).
The “Dune” sequel fended off challenges by two recent theatrical releases. Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man” (Universal), once intended as a Netflix original, is #2 at iTunes, third at Fandango. The family-oriented “Arthur the King” (Lionsgate) took second at Fandango, but only #6 at iTunes. Both initially are available to rent for 48 hours for $19.99.
Two new home-play debuts also made top 10 lists. “Cash Out” (Saban) is #9 at iTunes, renting at $6.99; starring John Travolta, the critically reviled title may be getting as much attention for its little-known director Ives. That’s...

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is a smash, folks. First off, Alex Godfrey talks to ace actor Mike Faist, star of Luca Guadagnino's new tennis movie, Challengers [23:12 - 37:33 approx.], and then Chris Hewitt has a Zoom session (apologies if the sound is slightly distorted — tech issues) with Kerry Condon, Oscar-nominated star of The Banshees Of Inisherin, voice of F.R.I.D.A.Y. in the MCU, and star of this week's Liam Neeson thriller, In The Lands Of Saints And Sinners. [57:25 - 1:15:29 approx.] Either side of those, Chris hosts in the podbooth and is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, for a spell, Sophie Butcher, to discuss the week's movie news, including the latest Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, review Challengers, In The Land Of Saints And Sinners, Boy Kills World, and Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, and tackle a listener question that has stuck around from last week, and mutated somehow into a...

Having won a BAFTA (and landed an Oscar nomination) for her role as Colin Farrell’s kind-hearted but cynical — and distinctly less donkey-friendly — sister in Martin McDonagh’s darkly comic “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Kerry Condon is back in her native Ireland for her next film role.

But it’s not long before she’s up against Liam Neeson, whose demeanor as a quiet widow and secondhand book dealer masks a secret identity as a local hitman for Colm Meaney’s village mobster. With two major sci-fi sequels debuting this week to lead the VOD and Netflix charts, the new films also inspired victory laps for the Part Ones of “Dune” and “Rebel Moon.”
“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) leads at both iTunes and Fandango, and Netflix’s original “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” is #1 at the streamer. iTunes packaged the 2021 “Dune: Part One” with its sequel as a $34.99 purchase, and it ranks second there. (“Dune: Part Two” alone rents for 48 hours for $24.99.) “Rebel Moon — Part One” returned at #7 on Netflix’s top 10.
Three other recent theatrical releases also transitioned to home viewing, with curiously different pricing and availability strategies. The top grosser is Neon’s “Immaculate” (approaching $16 million), but it rents for the lowest price: $9.99. “Late Night with the Devil” (IFC) is $14.99, but for that price consumers own it. “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” (Goldwyn) with Liam Neeson is a standard $19.99 rental.

Liam Neeson stars in In the Land of Saints and Sinners, a film directed by Robert Lorenz.
In the golden age of cinema, spanning the 1950s and 60s, a star actor’s presence was so dominant that their character, the one they consistently played, heavily influenced the movie. It used to be a movie tailored for James Stewart or Cary Grant, with minimal variations of their “hero” or “villain” roles.
The same case applies to Liam Neeson, who has embraced this traditional role, heavily influencing nearly every movie he stars in or as we suspect, the films seem to be specifically designed for him. Decades ago, someone decided that this man, Liam Neeson, embodied goodness, whether portraying the character of Oskar Schindler or, in this case, a killer with a heart.

Jack Gleeson and Liam Neeson in In The Land Of Saints And Sinners
In US cinemas now and coming to Netflix on 26 April, In The Land Of Saints And Sinners, directed by Robert Lorenz, marks a real return to form for Liam Neeson, who gets a chance to remind viewers what he can do as an actor after playing a string of underwritten characters in Hollywood actioners. He plays a retired hitman who falls in with a young up-and-coming assassin played by Jack Gleeson, who will be most familiar to viewers as Joffrey Baratheon from Game Of Thrones. Having arranged to meet up with Jack for an interview, I begin by thanking him, as I really enjoyed the film and might have missed it otherwise.

Liam Neeson returns in an action thriller set in Ireland, playing an aging hitman facing the Ira. The film adheres to the Liam Neeson formula, with little character development or engaging plotting. While flawed, the movie has authentic Western genre vibes, and Kerry Condon's standout performance should not be missed.
Liam Neeson is back in action with In the Land of Saints and Sinners — this time in Ireland. He brings his signature gruff action formula, playing an aging hitman who faces off against ruthless members of the Ira just as he is about to leave his violent past and career behind. Reuniting with The Marksman director Robert Lorenz, the duo brings us to the rocky cliffside of Ireland, where we follow the well-liked widower Finbar Murphy. He has a mysterious past and connections to shady members of the small community, but he's friendly with neighbors and the police chief.

IFC Films’ Late Night With The Devil topped the specialty market in its second week, as a Tollywood and a Bollywood film both made the top ten in a rare occurrence. Strong horror and Indian fare have helped buoy the box office since Covid. They continue to fill in the top ten, including this week, which boasts a monstrous hit in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire — but is a neighborhood with fewer overall wide release due to Hollywood strikes.
Scary first: Late Night With The Devil by Australian duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes stars David Dastmalchian, perfection as a late 1970s talk show host whose quest for ratings on a Halloween night broadcast goes nowhere good, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. It grossed $2.2 million on 1,442 screens in week two, for a cume of $6.2 million. The film is in the top ten again, at no. 7.

Liam Neeson's recent movie broke his streak of critical flops, setting the stage for his upcoming remake. Despite past movie failures, Neeson's latest film showcases his ability to deliver a critically-acclaimed performance. The high rating for "In the Land of Saints and Sinners" proves Neeson is a solid action star, and that he's ready for his upcoming role in "The Naked Gun" reboot.
Liam Neeson has a major remake coming soon, and his most recent movie's critical success on Rotten Tomatoes has perfectly set the stage for it. For years, Liam Neeson has established himself as one of the biggest names in the entire action genre. Neeson has played some deadly action heroes over the course of his career, and they often led to major critical success. At some point during the first act of Robert Lorenz’s handsome but egregiously hackneyed “In the Land of Saints and Sinners,” which is maybe the 900th Liam Neeson movie about a weary hitman/rancher/fixer/truck driver/ex-cop/very tall person who decides to take matters into his own hands when some bad guys step over the line, the prolific Irish actor turns to one of his scene partners and sighs: “There’s more to me than this, and I’d like folks to see it.”
Needless to say, the first part of that sentence is much easier to believe than the second.
Cast here as a regretful assassin who tries to change his ways at the height of the Troubles (only to get mixed up with a trio of Ira terrorists who take cover in his quaint coastal village after a car bomb goes wrong), Neeson again reaffirms...

Plot: In 1974, an aging hitman (Liam Neeson) tries to leave his violent past behind and reinvent himself in a small, isolated town in Ireland. However, his good nature leads to him making a fateful decision that puts him in the crosshairs of an insane Ira assassin (Kerry Condon) and her cronies.
Review: I know what you’re thinking – another Liam Neeson action flick. Ho-hum. Normally, I’d be right there with you. While no one can deny he’s become the 21st century’s version of Charles Bronson, with him churning out a steady diet of B-level action flicks, not all of them are disposable in the way something like Blacklight, Honest Thief, Retribution and too many others are. Once in a while, he works with a really interesting director, such as on the beautifully photographed Marlowe by Neil Jordan. One of his better recent action flicks was definitely The Marksman,...
