Cinema, at its best, has the potential to be a compassionate, thoughtful, and even revolutionary act. The most powerful films are not just about looking at a place and a people but truly seeing them, taking us deeper into a state of being that far too often can go egregiously overlooked.
Nowhere is this more true than “No Other Land,” the outstanding Oscar-nominated documentary directed by the courageous Palestinian-Israeli filmmaking collective of Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor. A devastating profile of the community of Masafer Yatta (a group of Palestinian villages in the West Bank constantly on the brink of destruction), the people living in perpetual uncertainty, and the way state violence consumes entire generations, it’s not just one of the most vital films about the region, but one of the absolute best documentaries to come out this or any year.

AI-centered dramas need a dash of formal ingenuity and a rich emotional, human connection for them to fully work. The presence of a robot in the narrative isn’t enough to push it. There should ideally be a sense of stakes when the film also hints at manipulation in the mix. If the story is so cut-and-dried, the film would only collapse into a generic muddle. AI narratives demand a cleverness of conceit that’s also touching, probing, and at least interested in the matrices of agency, power, and intelligence. Robert Rippberger’s directorial “Renner” is a determinedly thin rendition of topical concerns over the intervention of AI in human lives and decision-making.

Moana 2 has had a record-breaking opening weekend. The new Disney animated movie is a sequel to their 2016 smash hit and follows the title character (Auliʻi Cravalho) teaming up once again with the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) for a brand-new musical adventure with songs by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear rather than the original's Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Moana 2 release kicked off midweek, the day before Thanksgiving, after breaking the record for the most first-day pre-sales of any 2024 animated movie.
Per Disney, as of Sunday morning, Moana 2 is projected to close out its opening weekend with a 3-day gross of $135.5 million and a 5-day total of $221 million at the domestic box office on its way to a projected $368 million worldwide debut. This domestic debut smashes a variety of records, including the highest-grossing Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday day, 3-day Thanksgiving weekend, and 5-day Thanksgiving weekend of all time, beating 2019's Frozen II,...

The sequel to Netflix's most-watched non-English movie has been confirmed for a 2025 release. Originally launched in 2007, the streaming service began its global expansion in 2010, launching in Canada and rapidly entering international markets like Latin America, Europe, and Asia over the next decade and, by 2016, had become available in over 190 countries. Over the years, Netflix's original non-English movies and TV shows have created a robust library that appeals to its international subscribers.
To date, Netflix's most-watched title, TV show or movie, English or non-English, is the Korean-language Squid Game season 1 with over 265 million views. In terms of movies, their most popular non-English film is Troll with 103 million views, followed by Under Paris, Society of the Snow, Nowhere, The Platform, Through My Window, Aka, Bloody Red Sky, My Name Is Vendetta, and Black Crab. Spanish language content makes up a large share of global demand and has a history of transcending national borders both across the Spanish-speaking world and to other non-Spanish-speaking markets.
Looking at Spain as an origin market for high-value content, Spanish productions have seen a 22% global increase in availability on major streaming platforms between 2021 and 2023, reflecting rapid growth in new content and availability. Many of these titles have become high-performers globally, with over 200 titles in the Top 10% of demand on major global streamers. And it is not just Spanish-speaking markets driving this growth — there has been growing demand for shows and movies from Spain across regions of the world.
Parrot Analytics’ Content Valuation System can measure the contribution of individual titles to platforms’ subscriber acquisition and monthly retention. From here we can quantify at a macro level the amount of revenue that shows and movies from Spain have contributed to streaming platforms around the world.

Spain is having a moment.
If that sounds familiar, it might be because Spain’s been having a moment for the last few years. The bump came when the government launched the Spain Audiovisual Hub in 2021, offering strategic backing of the industry by pumping 1.6 billion euros ($1.73 billion) into it.
In the three years since, Spain has made progress on all four of the Hub’s main areas of focus: attracting foreign investments and shoots, improving financial and tax instruments, training talent — especially women — as well as regulatory reforms and the elimination of administrative barriers.
Now, Spain has been designated MIPCOM’s 2024 Country of Honor, and the Spanish government has launched an ambitious campaign called Spain, Where Talent Ignites aimed at boosting the country’s global recognition, reputation and marketability of Spanish productions, and growing business opportunities in an increasingly competitive landscape.

Dragon Ball is a series that isn't afraid of death. While there are plenty of deaths in Dragon Ball, only some of them stand out for their sadness. Characters in Dragon Ball usually die in the middle of battle, and their deaths can be cold and brutal. Most of the Z Fighters have died at least once, with some of them dying multiple times. Even though characters like Vegeta are now more than acquainted with the afterlife, it doesn't make his deaths any less sad.
Dragon Ball does a great job of treating character's deaths meaningfully. When one of Goku's friends dies in front of him, he's probably going to go berserk, leading to some of the greatest transformations in anime.

When Gregg Araki last spoke with Slant in 2011, he remarked, “A pet peeve of mine is when filmmakers keep making the same movie over and over without any kind of progression.” As Araki prepares to shoot another film centered around youth culture and sexuality, I Want Your Sex, he continues to bring a fresh perspective to his pet themes. That evolution was evident even within his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, the series of movies that helped establish his place at the vanguard of the loosely organized New Queer Cinema of the 1990s.
As Araki revealed in a recent conversation with us, the three films weren’t originally mapped out as a trilogy. When the lo-fi charms of his 1993’s Totally F***ed Up—made on a shoestring budget with few additional crew members—struck a chord with festival audiences, new creative possibilities were opened up to the scrappy filmmaker. Having established himself with a string of low-budget, transgressive films, New Queer Cinema luminary Gregg Araki expanded his budgetary and artistic palette with his so-called Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, a series of narratively unrelated but thematically linked features about LGBTQ youths living on the margins of a Los Angeles redolent of the desiccated outskirts of the city as seen in Alex Cox’s Repo Man. Like that film, 1993’s Totally F***ed Up, 1995’s The Doom Generation, and 1997’s Nowhere are informed by the legacy and aesthetics of punk, but Araki builds on that foundation with styles drawn from the queer underground, as well as the rise of ’90s alternative music in its myriad forms of noise.
Totally F***ed Up sets the general narrative tone and atmosphere for all three features in the trilogy. Though it does have certain narrative through lines, the most significant of which is telegraphed by...

The 1990s already felt mid-apocalyptic to the queer community -- AIDS had torn through America largely unimpeded in the '80s thanks to the utter disregard of the Reagan and Bush governments, and though life-sustaining treatments began to roll out in the '90s, the gap in the community felt cavernous, and unfillable. Couple this with the fact that Los Angeles always feels slightly mid-apocalyptic -- a sprawling nowhereland frying under persistent heat and even more persistent cultural cannibalism -- and you arrive at the blistering vibe of Gregg Araki's "Teen Apocalypse Trilogy," which rolls out in 1993 (Totally F***ed Up), 1995 (The Doom Generation), and 1997 (Nowhere), newly restored by Strand Releasing and made available through the Criterion Collection as a boxed set. Quick Links A Gumshoe Simulator Nowhere's Haunting Highlight Nowhere's Demo Is Very Rough
When it comes to survival-horror games on Steam, it can be difficult for indie creators to stand out from the crowd and define what makes their take on the genre unique from the plethora of alternative experiences on the storefront. Midnight Forge's Nowhere is the latest game to attempt to carve out its niche in a hyper-competitive market and, if the demo is anything to go by, it could have a profound effect on players. Unfortunately, the preview build is incomplete and barebones, making the idea of Nowhere far more compelling than the actual game.

Developer Midnight Forge will have gamers experiencing Nordic horror with their upcoming narrative mystery/Survival Horror title Nowhere. In fact, the developer will be releasing a new demo this Thursday, August 15 on Steam to give gamers a taste of this unique tale on Norse mythology, and have released a new trailer to coincide with the upcoming demo.
Set deep within the forests of Norway, Nowhere sees players step into the hiking boots of a detective on the hunt for a group of missing tourists. It quickly becomes apparent that there’s more to the tourists’ disappearance than what was initially thought. The investigation soon takes on a supernatural twist, plunging players headfirst into a terrifying spin on Norse mythology that will see them piece together the doomed story of the gods after Ragnarök.

Nineties New Queer Cinema icon Gregg Araki has not directed a feature since leaving Eva Green’s body frozen in the suburban snow globe of “White Bird in a Blizzard” in 2014. Since then, the DIY taboo buster has gone the way so many indie directors have to: by applying their personality to TV shows. In Araki’s case, that includes directing episodes of “Dahmer” and “American Gigolo.”
The iconoclastic Southern California filmmaker — known for “The Doom Generation” and “Mysterious Skin” and celebrated for his stylishly drawn stories of youthful sexual identity coming to bloom — also wrote and directed the 2019 series “Now Apocalypse.” Now, he’s teaming up with Karley Sciortino, the co-writer on that Starz show about sex and aliens in LA, for a new movie titled “I Want Your Sex.”

The movie is set in a dystopian Spain under a totalitarian regime, where Mia and her husband Nico attempt to escape. Mia and Nico get separated, and Mia gives birth to her baby, Noa, while adrift in the ocean. Mia and Noa are eventually rescued by an Irish family, while Nico's fate remains uncertain. Mia's survival is an allegory for Christian themes of hope and miracles.
The ending of the Nowhere movie sees Mia and Noa rescued by a boat near Ireland, but how did they get there, what happened to Nico, and how did they survive the crazy events on their floating shipping container? Nowhere (2023) is a Spanish survival thriller from Netflix directed by Albert Pint, starring Anna Castillo as Mia and Tamar Novas as Nico.

There’s no doubt that layoffs are still sweeping the gaming industry. We saw nearly 10,000 people laid off last year as the industry shifted in a different direction. Some of the biggest gaming companies are looking towards live service games to generate revenue and survive.
Unfortunately, Ubisoft has announced that the studio is letting go of a significant chunk of developers at its Toronto studios. These employees were primarily focused on developing remakes of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Times and Splinter Cell. It’s going to be a long while before these titles ever hit the shelves.

Netflix is as interested in acquiring third-party titles as it is in producing original films, said Larry Tanz, Netflix VP of content for Emea.
Tanz underlined the importance of films to the streamer on a visit to Netflix’s European production hub in Tres Cantos on the outskirts of Madrid.
“What we care about is bringing the best films and series to our members,” said Tanz. “If it’s a huge film from Constantin that’s in theatres and then on Netflix, if our members love it, that’s great. If it’s something that we commission, that’s great as well.

Marking one of their biggest 4K months yet, Criterion has announced a September lineup led by Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse trilogy of The Doom Generation, Nowhere, and Totally F***ed Up in a rather full set, and all but the last in 4K. One of Criterion’s earliest titles, John Mackenzie’s The Long Good Friday, is receiving a sizable 480-to-2,160 upgrade; a more recent addition, Repo Man, also gets upgraded, hopefully fueling further interest for Alex Cox’s recently announced sequel.
On the new-film front, Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers makes the most-enviable home debut possible. And with regard to films I never thought would be presented in such profound resolution, Todd Solondz’s Happiness is given the 4K treatment, at long last supplying a companion to Life During Wartime.

How now, what news: the Criterion Channel’s July lineup is here. Eight pop renditions of Shakespeare are on the docket: from movies you forgot were inspired by the Bard (Abel Ferrara’s China Girl) to ones you’d wish to forget altogether (Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing), with maybe my single favorite interpretation (Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet) alongside Paul Mazursky, Gus Van Sant, Baz Luhrmann, Derek Jarman, and (of course) Kenneth Branagh. A neonoir collection arrives four months ahead of Noirvember: two Ellroy adaptations, two from De Palma that are not his neonoir Ellroy adaptation, two from the Coen brothers (i.e. the chance to see a DVD-stranded The Man Who Wasn’t There in HD), and––finally––a Michael Winner picture given Criterion’s seal of approval.
