Exclusive: Apple TV+ has landed for development Dilettante, a series starring Jeff Daniels as a character that will likely get the New York media circles buzzing, Deadline has learned. The project, from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Productions, is inspired by Dana Brown’s memoir about working for former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

Written by Brown and Julia creator Daniel Goldfarb, Dilettante is described as a fictionalized coming-of-age story set in the glamorous and cutthroat “Golden Age” of magazines in 1990s New York.

Daniels will play a fictional magazine editor that is certain to draw parallels to Carter the way another work of fiction about a young assistant to a powerful New York magazine editor, the movie The Devil Wears Prada, has been evoking Anna Wintour as a prototype for its editor character played by Meryl Streep.

The Boys actress Aya Cash is the latest name to join the cast of upcoming political drama Reykjavk. Cash rose to prominence in the role of white supremacist supe Stormfront on Prime Video's hit comic book adaptation, and is set to reprise her role in The Boys prequel series Vought Rising. The movie, which also stars The Newsroom actor Jeff Daniels as Ronald Reagan, will focus on a critical Reykjavk Summit between the US and the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War in 1986, and how its consequences shaped the world.

Per Variety, Cash is set to play the role of a young journalist who is tasked with covering the summit. The film will also feature Hope Davis as Nancy Reagan, Jared Harris as Mikhail Gorbachev, Branka Katic as Raisa Gorbachev, and Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons as Secretary of State George Shultz. Exclusive: Jeff Daniels (A Man in Full), Jared Harris (Chernobyl) and J.K. Simmons (Being the Ricardos) have signed on to star in Reykjavik, a historical drama from Sk Global (Anyone But You) that chronicles one of the most significant diplomatic achievements of modern times: The Reykjavik Summit.

Reykjavik takes place at the most dangerous point of the Cold War, watching as political enemies Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev meet in Iceland over one long, tense weekend to decide if there will be peace or war in the world.

Daniels plays U.S. President Reagan, with Harris as Soviet leader Gorbachev, and Simmons as United States Secretary of State George Shultz.

Michael Russell Gunn will direct from his own script, in his feature debut, following his work with Sk Global as showrunner of its acclaimed limited series Thai Cave Rescue for Netflix. He also produces alongside John Logan Pierson. Production will commence on location in Reykjavik, Iceland in early October, with extensive filming at Höfði House, the actual site of the 1986 summit.

Sources tell Deadline that Gunn’s project is one that he’s spent years working on and researching. His work began when he drove out to Stanford to interview Secretary of State Shultz before his passing, receiving now-declassified transcripts from the summit. With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the recent revelation that the U.S. will again deploy long-range missiles in Germany, the hope is to reflect on how we, as citizens and as nations, can come together to work past our differences, in pursuit of a better, safer world.

Daniels is coming off of A Man in Full, Netflix’s limited series from David E. Kelley, which adapts the 1998 novel from Tom Wolfe. Recently, he was also seen starring opposite Maura Tierney in the crime drama American Rust, which ran for two seasons.

Most recently boarding Kathryn Bigelow’s new film for Netflix, as we were first to report, Harris also stars in Apple TV+ and Skydance’s sci-fi series Foundation, based on the works of Isaac Asimov, which previewed its forthcoming third season at Comic-Con. Previously garnering Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Chernobyl, he’s also recently wrapped on the indies Brave the Dark and Reawakening.

Following roles in films like National Champions and Being the Ricardos, Simmons’ upcoming slate includes the Clint Eastwood pic Juror #2, Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, Amazon’s sequel to The Accountant and holiday event film Red One, and the addiction film The Prince written by David Mamet.

Prior to Thai Cave Rescue, Gunn wrote and produced for the critically acclaimed Showtime series Billions, as well as the political thriller Designated Survivor for ABC and Netflix, having begun his career on Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom. On the film side, he sold his script The Virginian about a young George Washington to Warner Bros, and is currently adapting a novel for Charlize Theron at Universal.

Indie studio Sk Global has produced and financed over 100 features, dating back to its origins as Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Most recently, the company unveiled the acclaimed rom-com Anyone But You, a star-making project for Glen Powell, who led the cast opposite Sydney Sweeney. The Sony pic emerged as a sleeper hit upon its December 2023 release, proving that rom-coms can continue to work theatrically as it grossed over $220 million worldwide. American Rust has been cancelled once again after having been rescued by Prime Video for season 2. Created by Dan Futterman, and based on Philipp Meyers debut novel of the same name, the adaptation takes place in a small town. It follows the chief of police Del Harris as he takes on an investigation that finds the son of the woman he loves accused of murder. The American Rust cast includes Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney, David Alvarez, Alex Neustaedter, Julie Mayorga, Mark Pellegrino, Rob Yang, and Kyle Beltran.

Now, Deadline confirms that Prime Video will not be moving forward with American Rust season 3, as the crime drama has been cancelled after two seasons.

William Jackson Harper — the Emmy- and Tony-nominated actor beloved from The Good Place — has been cast in the role of Ben, who is described as the self-assured and innovative Head of Sports at the show’s fictional TV network.

The Morning Show‘s new cast continues to grow. Already announced are Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, as savvy operator Celine Dumont; Jeremy Irons as Martin Levy, the father to Aniston’s Alex Levy; and Genius: MLK/X star Aaron Pierre, in a guest role, as an acclaimed visual artist.

By the time 1999 rolled around, David E. Kelley had already more than proven his bonafides as a megaproducer and an Emmy dynamo nearly without peer. He had already won five statuettes as a producer for Best Drama Series – three for “L.A. Law” and two more for “Picket Fences” (1993 and ’94) – as well as another pair for writing Emmys for “L.A. Law” (’90 and ’91). Oh, and there was also a 1998 Best Drama win for “The Practice,” giving him six trophies for top series and eight Emmys overall. Not too shabby. In fact, his run of winning Best Drama five times in six years had never happened. The closest anyone came was Kelley’s mentor Steven Bochco’s run of four straight for “Hill Street Blues” in the early 1980s.

Exclusive: Bill Camp, who is currently starring in Apple TV+’s hot new legal thriller Presumed Innocent, is the latest cast member to join Netflix’s female-driven, dark comedy limited series Sirens.

Created by Molly Smith Metzler based on her play Elemeno Pea and executive produced by LuckyChap, Sirens follows Devon (Meghann Fahy), who thinks her sister Simone (Milly Alcock) has a really creepy relationship with her new boss, the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore). Michaela’s cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone and Devon has decided it’s time for an intervention. When Devon tracks her sister down to say Wtf, she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be. The show is told throughout one explosive weekend at The Kells’ lavish beach estate.

Camp will play Simone (Alcock) and Devon’s (Fahy) father Bruce DeWitt. A former Navy man, he’s Buffalo-born and bred.

Exclusive: Jerrika Hinton (Hunters) and Elvis Nolasco (Godfather of Harlem) have wrapped lead roles in Mr. Crocket, a horror film produced for Hulu Originals by WorthenBrooks (formerly 20th Digital Studio), which will premiere exclusively on Hulu later this year.

Directed by up-and-comer Brandon Espy, from his script written with Carl Reid, Mr. Crocket is based on the 2022 short of the same name, written and directed by Espy for Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween. The story is about a mother who goes on a dangerous journey to get her son back when a demonic children’s show host begins kidnapping children.

Others in the cast include Ayden Gavin (Big George Foreman), Kristolyn Lloyd (Blue Bloods), and Alex Akpobome (Industry).

I May Destroy You, Porter and The Maze Runner actor Ameen most recently starred opposite Jeff Daniels in the Netflix limited series A Man In Full from David E. Kelley, and portrayed Martin Luther King Jr opposite Colman Domingo in Netflix’s Oscar-nominated Rustin from director George C. Wolfe. Many know actor/musician Jeff Daniels for his roles in classic ‘90s films like “Speed” and “Dumb and Dumber,” as well as his Emmy-winning performance as Will McAvoy in the Aaron Sorkin HBO series “The Newsroom.” However, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Daniels says he received the greatest camera-acting education during his collaboration with Clint Eastwood on the 2002 mystery thriller “Blood Work.”

Eastwood, notorious for shooting very few takes, if not only one, made Daniels realize preparation and spontaneity are key.

“I do not sit around with casts on any project and talk about our collective journey. I love to make it happen in front of the camera for the first time in take one,” Daniels said. “In Clint Eastwood movies, that’s where I learned it. You get one take, and then Clint’s moving the camera. So that’s where you learn to hit it on one.

There may have not been as much television in 2024 so far as in previous years, but there was a Hell of a lot of great TV in the first half of this year.

The harsh beauty of FX’s Shōgun, the depths of Baby Reindeer and Big Mood, the wit of Diarra from Detroit, and the surprising scope of X-Men ’97 set a very high standard. The icy reset that is the Issa López created True Detective: Night Country was another such high. Add to that the historical script flip of The Sympathizer, the sometimes brutal honestly of Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, Diane Lane and Jeff Daniels’ masterclass in A Man in Full, and the barrier drop kicking of Echo.

So, if you are looking for some true creative fireworks this Independence Day, may I suggest casting your eyes over our selection of some of the best new shows of 2024 so far.

Jeff Daniels is always a reliably excellent performer whether its in comedy or drama, TV or film, and the veteran actor has turned in another masterclass performance in Netflix’s “A Man in Full.”

Adapted from Tom Wolfe‘s novel of the same name and created by “Big Little Lies” helmer David E. Kelley, “A Man in Full” follows Daniels as real estate mogul Charlie Croker, who tries to protect his empire and legacy from crumbling when he falls into sudden bankruptcy. Daniels dominated the screen here, chewing scenery, spitting it out with venom, and then re-chewing the scenery some more. Whatever you may think of the show, Daniels is never anything less than ferociously good, as noted by critics.

The webs of romance in Bridgerton easily captured the top spot among all streaming titles for the show’s return. Theatrical flop Madame Web, meanwhile, found a promising start to its streaming life.

Bridgerton drew 2.76 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States for the week of May 13-19. The first half of season three premiered on May 16, and Nielsen says those four episodes accounted for 70 percent of the total, or about 1.93 billion minutes — which would still have ranked No. 1 by a wide margin. The remaining 827 million minutes came from the first two seasons.

Madame Web — whose mom was in the Amazon researching spiders right before she died — premiered May 14 on Netflix and racked up 1.16 billion minutes of viewing for the week. That’s equivalent to about 10 million complete showings of the movie, which is part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe and was derided by both critics and audiences...

Netflix’s live roast of NFL great Tom Brady made it into the Nielsen streaming rankings for its premiere, despite only being available for a few hours of that week. After its first full week on the streamer, it rocketed to the top of the charts.

The Roast of Tom Brady gathered 1.67 billion minutes of viewing for the week of May 6-12, leading all streaming titles by a wide margin (the second-place finisher, Grey’s Anatomy, had 1.11 billion minutes of watch time for the week). The roast also had by far the biggest weekly viewing tally ever for a Netflix special; the previous high was 798 million minutes for Chris Rock’s stand-up special Selective Outrage in March 2023.

The 1.67 billion minutes of viewing for the roast in the United States translates to about 27.87 million hours, or about two thirds of Netflix’s reported worldwide total (42.2 million hours) for the special that week.

After “Bridgerton” dominated the top three spots on Luminate’s streaming rankings last week, the only TV title that could rival it was a complete change of pace from the high production value Regency-era drama: “Tires,” Shane Gillis’ self-funded half-hour comedy that premiered on May 23.

“Bridgerton” Season 3 of course still took the No. 1 position with 766.8 million minutes watched in its second full week of availability, coming out to an estimated 3.7 million views when divided by the 220-minute runtime of the four currently available episodes.

But “Tires” beat Season 1 and 2 of “Bridgerton,” landing at No. 2 with 447.8 million minutes watched. Divided by its 135-minute runtime, that translates to 3.3 million views — not far behind “Bridgerton” Season 3 at all. Season 2 took third place place with 394.2 million minutes watched while Season 1 took fourth place with 391.6 million minutes watched.

“Jurassic World: Chaos Theory” had its chart debut at No. 5 with 298.1 million minutes watched in its first week of availability.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

Prime Video’s Fallout four-peated in the No. 1 slot on Nielsen’s U.S. ranking of streaming originals for the week of April 29, by racking up another 1.1 billion minutes viewed for its eight-episode Season 1.

Netflix’s Baby Reindeer (with 734 million minutes viewed across seven episodes) and Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives (699 million minutes/eight episodes) also held steady vs. last week, followed by Netflix’s A Man in Full (619 million minutes/six episodes) and Netflix’s The Asaunta Case (531 million minutes/six episodes).

The Netflix special roasting NFL great Tom Brady made it onto the streaming charts for the week it premiered — despite it only being up for a few hours of that week.

The special streamed live on May 5, meaning it tallied those viewing minutes in under 12 hours. (With a running time of almost three hours, the 279 million minutes equate to about 1.6 million complete runs of the special.)

Bluey moved back into the top overall spot with 1.18 billion minutes of viewing on Disney+, adding to its total as the most streamed title in the United States so far this year (21.73 billion minutes and counting). The married couple has landed a pilot order at Amazon for the marching band dramedy Band, with John Benjamin Hickey (Pitch Perfect, The Big C) and Chanté Adams (A League of Their Own, A Man in Full) set to lead the ensemble cast.

The potential series, like Max’s Generation, follows a group of teens as they navigate adolescence while finding a sense of belonging in their school’s marching band.

Rounding out the cast are Miguel Ángel Garcia (The Long Game, Promised Land) as star Axel; newcomer Lynley Eilers as his fiercely loyal best friend Sasha; Alex Fitzalan (The Society, The Wilds) as sexy Simon; Henry Hunter Hall (The Watcher, Hunters) as heartthrob drummer Evan. Amazon MGM Studios has handed an official pilot order to Band, a drama created and executive produced by Daniel Barnz who will direct the pilot and serve as showrunner on the potential series. The project had had a blinking green light for weeks while assembling its cast. The actors have now been set, including John Benjamin Hickey and Miguel Angel Garcia who star alongside Lynley Eilers, Alex Fitzalan, Henry Hunter Hall and Chanté Adams.

The Regency era dominated TV screens during the week of May 17-23, as “Bridgerton” took not one, not two, but three top spots on Luminate’s weekly streaming ranking charts.

In its first full week of availability, Season 3 Part 1 of the Shonda Rhimes-produced Netflix series hit 2.3 billion minutes watched, the No. 1 title by far. Season 1 took second place with 498.6 million minutes watched, followed by Season 2 with 434 million minutes watched. It’s clear that “Bridgerton” will continue to dominate streaming rankings for weeks to come, not only because of the show’s obvious popularity, but because Season 3 still has four episodes yet to come on June 13.

Two titles tied as the next-most-watched of the week: Season 2 of Amazon Prime Video's "Outer Range," which was the No. 4 TV series, and Netflix's "Mother of the Bride," the top movie. Both were watched for 256.4 million minutes in their first full weeks of availability.

Season 3 of “Bridgerton” hit 45.1 million views in its opening weekend on Netflix, a whopping success for the Regency-era drama.

The second season debuted in 2022, when Netflix still released viewing hours in terms of hours watched, with 193 million minutes watched across its eight episodes. When divided by that season’s 8.5-hour runtime, that translates to 22.7 million views — barely over half of Season 3’s debut. Exact data for Season 1’s debut weekend is unavailable, though it is known that it was outpaced by Season 2’s.

It should be noted that Season 3 debut numbers were counted over four days, while the Season 2 total only accounts for three, but with such a large jump between seasons, it’s still clear that the newest episodes are the series’ biggest yet.

The Jake Gyllenhaal starrer “Road House” continues to be a work horse for Prime Video, which confirmed earlier this week that a second installment is in development. The special, which originally streamed live during the Netflix Is a Joke comedy fest, hit 13.8 million views during the May 6-12 viewing window, a steep increase from the 2 million views that made it the No. 6 English-language TV title the week before, during which it was only available for the weekend. Also recorded live during the festival, Katt Williams’ stand-up special “Woke Foke” held onto its No. 4 position for the second week in a row, increasing slightly from 4 million to 4.3 million views.

On the movies chart, the Brooke Shields-led “Mother of the Bride” quickly dethroned “Unfrosted” in the top position with a strong 26.7 million views — also outpacing the Brady roast. Jerry Seinfeld’s movie followed with 8.8 million views in its first full week of availability.

If it weren’t for Jim Carrey, fans would never have witnessed Jeff Daniels outdoing himself as megalomaniacal Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker in the Netflix adaptation of “A Man in Full.” In a recent interview with Indiewire “Newsroom” star Jeff Daniels, he revealed he almost quit showbusiness before his friend and costar, Jim Carrey, talked him out of it.

Jeff Daniels starred opposite Carrey in the 1994 buddy comedy “Dumb and Dumber.” The movie followed Lloyd Christmas (Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Daniels), two affable, dim-witted pals from Rhode Island who often get into impossible situations leading to mayhem.

The duo have remained friends for decades and reprised their roles in 2014’s “Dumb and Dumber To.” In an interview with IndieWire, Jeff Daniels explained that after they finished filming the 2014 sequel, he told Carrey, “I’m done.”
