With the second season of iZombie having concluded nearly a year ago, we’ve had to satisfy our collective hunger with whatever bits of information came down the pipeline in the time since – and, believe me, there wasn’t much to go on. Well, we finally did get a brief promo a few weeks back, so that was something.
Now, with season 3 just within arm’s reach, the network has put out a hearty trailer that should make everyone happy. Not only does it give us a generous look at what’s to come, but it also teases what kind of brains Liv and Major will consume, no doubt bringing countless laughs along with.
From the footage provided, it’s hard to pin down what grey matter Liv has been feasting on, aside from maybe a club DJ, but it’s Major that left me in stitches. Seeing him inherit...

Given that it was the first to wrap its season, it makes perfect sense that Warner Home Entertainment would unleash the complete second season of the CW’s iZombie on disc ahead of the superheroes coming in August. The 4-disc DVD set is coming on Tuesday while Warner Archive will be simultaneously releasing iZombie the Complete First Season and iZombie the Complete Second Season on Blu-ray.
The series is loosely based on the Chris Roberson and Michael Allred Vertigo series and is a quiet success, garnering solid ratings and reviews but without the sturm and drang of its fellow DC properties. In the hands of executive producers Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars) and Diane Ruggiero-Wright (The Ex List), they keep the mood light, the characters quirky, and the plots engaging.

iZombie wrapped up its second season tonight with back-to-back episodes. I already offered some overall thoughts on the season after last week's outing, so let's get specific on the finale, coming up just as soon as I'm a squad leader of my Call of Duty World League challenge team... We know from the Meat Cute massacre in the season 1 finale that this show can do impressive zombie action when it's of a mind to. But the carnage at the Max Rager party was much bigger and more elaborate than I'd have expected. If it wasn't as technically impressive as the Walking Dead version would have been, it was so much fun, and so character-focused — whether Clive declining to be scratched, Liv being forced to kill the Romero'ed Drake (who only wound up that way because he was the good guy Liv always believed him to be), or Major finally getting...

I haven't checked in on iZombie in a while, so let's talk about last night's episode — and season 2 as a whole as we wait for next week's finale — coming up just as soon as I clear cases like Frank Drebin but get treated like Nordberg... "Reflections of the Way Liv Used to Be" was the first iZombie episode I can recall to not use the full (and excellent) opening credits sequence, which is a move shows make when an hour is particularly busy. Given all the stories the show has been spinning this year about Max Rager, Major's side career turning zombies into popsicles, the war for Seattle drug supremacy, Ravi working on a cure, etc., not to mention how much time the Brain of the Week mystery eats up, it's a wonder the show doesn't have to shave down those credits every week to fit everything in. If I'm being honest,...

Syfy has announced that the great game/series crossover Defiance is set to return to production in Toronto next week for Season 2. Along with that announcement comes the first information about new and returning cast and production, starting with James Murray as Mayor Pottinger. Ooo. He was the dishy Stephen from when-it-was-great Season 1 and 2 of Primeval.
But wait, there’s more – “Grant Bowler returns as Nolan, along with … Stephanie Leonidas as Irisa Nolan, Tony Curran as Datak Tarr…” Okay, we saw Nolan revive, which explains how he can return, but Irisa, what the heck did she turn into? James Murray is set to rule over Defiance.
The British actor, who appeared on CBS' Chaos in 2011, will be a series regular on Season 2 of this Syfy drama, Deadline reports, coming on board as Niles Pottinger, a native of England who is appointed provisional mayor by the Earth Republic.
Pottinger is described by network insiders as "shrewd, polished and charming."
He's also a cut-throat pragmatist, chock full of information and secrets and unafraid to punish anyone who defies him. Look for Niles to set his romantic sights on Julie Benz's ex-mayor, Amanda Rosewater.
Defiance Season 2 will be comprised of 13 episodes and premiere in June 2014.

2013 is only halfway done, but there’s a fair chance that, in a television context, it might well be looked back upon as the year any and all accepted rules of “quality television” became utterly meaningless and the promise of great things arrived in all shapes and sizes, from all directions. Consider Netflix’s House of Cards and the resurrected Arrested Development: existing properties, incredible casts, and a novel delivery method to boot. Consider HBO’s increasingly epic and brutal Game of Thrones and the way it’s managed to capture the zeitgeist despite firmly belonging to a long-derided genre. Consider the continued reign of FX’s animated spy comedy Archer, complete with the best rapid-fire humor on TV. Consider Mad Men, still relevant as it heads into its final season. Consider the wildly popular The Walking Dead and the long-form horror that is sure to follow in its wake.

I was a big fan of ABC‘s Zero Hour when I previewed the pilot last summer, and was disappointed that they were holding it until midseason. When they finally did air it, they had made a few changes with a few scenes, but it was still the cool Indiana Jones-feeling, Nazi hating, twisty fun mysterious show I remembered, complete with creepy baby.
Of course I was horribly disappointed when ABC canceled the series after airing just three episodes, but over-the-moon happy when they announced that they would air all 13 episodes this summer.

Taking a small break from his proposed "Hercules" film with wrestler Dwayne Johnson, Brett Ratner is trying his hand at science-fiction television again, this time working on a new project for ABC that could get a series order without even making a pilot. ABC has agreed to a script-to-series deal for "Tomorrow," about a time-traveling FBI agent in a project created by Katherine Lindberg and Ted Cyr. Ratner's most recent television directorial work was with the short-lived "Chaos" for CBS last year. He also directed the pilot for Fox's "Prison Break." He is, of course, probably best known for his Rush Hour movies with Jackie Chan, as well as directing the not-so-popular "X-Men: The Last Stand" in 2006. Brett Ratner is set to direct and executive produce Fox ‘s spy drama pilot written by Karyn Usher (The Playboy Club). The procedural thriller centers on the orphaned 17-year-old daughter of a CIA operative who is recruited to become an operative herself. She encounters a mysterious rogue agent/assassin who serves as both her surrogate father and professional mentor in the spy world. The project hails from 20th Century Fox TV and Marty Adelstein and Shawn Levy’s studio-based 21 Laps/Adelstein Prods. Usher, Adelstein, Becky Clements and Levy will executive produce with Ratner. The pilot gig stems from the new overall deal Ratner signed with 20th TV in August. Of the previous pilots CAA-repped Ratner has directed for 20th TV, where he has been based for the past 8 years, two, Prison Break and Chaos, went to series.

He was the psychotic Clarence in Robocop in 1988 and played a very different scoundrel the next year in Dead Poet Society where he was the unforgettable Mr. Perry, the overbearing bully father of aspiring actor Neil (played by Robert Sean Leonard) who meets a tragic end. He played a comedy variation on that role as the conservative, tough-loving dad on the TV sitcom That .70.s Show from 1998 to 2006. Smith’s other credits include Flashpoint, Rambo III, To Die For, Deep Impact, and roles on both Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He can currently be seen on the TV series Chaos. The Disney classic Dead Poet Society has been digitally restored and presented for the first time in Blu-ray High Definition this week,...

Patrick Heusinger (Royal Pains) and James Murray (Chaos) are set to star in the NBC drama Beautiful People, which sounds remarkably like a TV version of (Will Smith’s version of) I, Robot. Directed by Stephen Hopkins and written by Michael McDonald, the show – which so far has a pilot order – is, according to Deadline:
..set in the near future in a society where humans co-exist with mechanical androids that look like people but are treated like second-class citizens. It centers on the very wealthy Lydia whose late husband founded the firm that makes Mechanicals. Murray will play her son, a handsome and very successful attorney who’s lived a rich and privileged life but makes a name for himself by publicly suggesting that Mechanicals might have civil rights — a notion that’s largely scoffed at. Heusinger will play a family man employed as a servant in Lydia’s home...

The members of Flashpoint’s Strategic Response Unit will keep on reporting for duty, now that the cop drama’s new home, Ion Television, has picked up the Toronto-produced series for another season.
Season 5, to consist of 13 episodes, begins production next month.
Originally acquired by and aired in the U.S. on CBS, Flashpoint moved to Ion’s slate in October 2011 after the network acquired all Season 1-3 episodes from along with 11 Season 4 originals. On Dec. 27, the drama delivered its Ion highs in total viewers (2.1 million) and in some key demos.

The Academy Of Motion Pictures & Arts Sciences just made official what Deadline reported first: that Hollywood A-lister Brian Grazer will produce the 84th Academy Awards with TV veteran Don Mischer. And there’s more news on this fast-breaking story: As much as the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences hoped that Eddie Murphy would reconsider his exit as host, insiders tell me that Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer has moved on this afternoon. ”We are not going back to him. No way,” they say. Grazer, co-founder of Imagine Entertainment with Ron Howard, first told Hollywood around 1 Pm that he committed to the gig. The Academy now owes Brian big-time for stepping into the breach left when Brett Ratner exited because of the scandal which the director created around himself. Immediately, Grazer began calling around town looking for an Oscar host and speed-dialed the top agencies checking availabilities for big talent.

Thirtysomething creators Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick, who recently returned to television with an overall deal at 20th Century Fox TV, have sold their first project under that pact, an adaptation of Richard Murphy’s novel Confessions Of A Contractor, which has landed a script commitment plus penalty at Fox, with Chaos creator Tom Spezialy writing. Additionally, Fox has bought a comedy penned by Wedding Crashers co-writer Steve Faber. Confessions of a Contractor is described as a soap about the combustible mix that results when you blend desire, jealousy, and home renovation. Spezialy, Herskovitz and Zwick will executive produce. This 20th TV’s second stab at developing a TV series based on Murphy’s novel. During the 2008-09 season, a drama written by Murphy and executive produced by Shawn Ryan was set up at CBS. Steve Faber’s comedy, tentatively titled Merry Go Round, will be written by Faber, who...

This Saturday night’s Syfy original movie Morlocks puts a new spin on the subterranean subhumanoids from the dark future of H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine. Even after watching these snippets I’m still not sure what exactly they are, but they sure don’t look like the albino apemen we’re accustomed to.
“Stargate: Atlantis” co-star David Hewlett, last seen as the douchebag neighbor in Rise of the Planet of the Apes has to contend with an uprising of future mutants after an experimental time machine opens a window in the future allowing the mutated Morlocks into our world to wreak havoc.
Christina Cole (“Chaos”), and Robert Picardo (47% of all Syfy original movies) also star in this UFO Films production directed by Matt Codd (Super Eruption).
Morlocks premieres this Saturday night on Syfy at 9/8 Central.

Shark Night 3D DIrected by: David R. Ellis Written by: Will Hayes and Jesse Studenberg Starring: Sara Paxton, Dustin Milligan, Joel David Moore, Katharine McPhee, Alyssa Diaz, Chris Zylka, Donal Logue, Sinqua Walls, Joshua Leonard and Chris Carmack I’m such a sucker for a creature feature. Alligators, snakes, bears, piranhas and wild boars, I watch them all. But I have a soft spot for sharks. I’ll watch anything with a shark in it. Deep Blue Sea is a particular treat for me when I catch it on cable. I was really hoping Shark Night 3D would be in the vein of last summer’s insanely fun Piranha 3D, but it was not to be. Even I have a threshold for dopey stories, and this one tried my patience. It’s not particularly fun, and there isn’t enough gore to satisfy gore hounds (no doubt due to the...

We told you recently about the extreme horror aspect (one critic has deemed it the Scariest TV Show Ever) of the highly anticipated American Horror Story set to premiere on FX on October 5. We also showed you the first three very-David-Lynch TV spots. Ahs has now gifted us with more of those TV spots, which we have learned are called “clues”, as well as a longer, wonderfully creepy and classy wordless introduction to the cast, which they’ve titled “Family Portrait”:

Exclusive: Director-producer Brett Ratner has closed a new overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television where he has been based for the past 7 years. He is being joined by former NBC development executive-turned-producer Chris Conti, who will serve as president of Ratner's Rat TV. "It's impossible not to love Brett," 20th TV chairman Dana Walden said. "He is a great entertainer, has such love for the business and has the most commercial sense of any creative person I've ever worked with." She praised Ratner for directing the pilot for the Fox drama Prison Break, which "helped reestablish what the 20th Century Fox TV brand is around the world." But for the past 7 years, Ratner has directed only one other 20th TV pilot that has gone to series, CBS' short-lived CIA dramedy Chaos. He has developed and produced a total of 3 series, Prison Break, Chaos and ABC's Women's Murder Club. That...

This weekend you’ll get to see David Hewlett on the big screen contending with a mutant ape uprising. This September on the small screen you’ll get to see him contend with a different mutant uprising when Morlocks get loose in our time.
You’re probably familiar with the Morlocks from H.G. Wells’ classic The Time Machine: a species of ape-like troglodytes that live underground in the futuristic world visited by Wells’ time traveler. The new Syfy original movie Morlocks dares to ask what if the light-sensitive cannibals traveled back in time to terrorize us.
An experimental time machine opens a window into the future, and mutated monsters (the Morlocks) use it to come back to the present and go on a murderous rampage.

Actor Jeffrey Weissman got his big break auditioning for, but not being cast in War Games. Instead he caught the attention of a big agent and was soon cast in the Twilight Zone movie in the, "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet" story, with John Lithgow. He did small parts in Johnny Dangerously, Crackers with Sean Penn and Donald Sutherland and a few guest star spots on TV series like Dallas and Scarecrow and Mrs. King before landing a co-starring role opposite Clint Eastwood in Pale Rider. In a recent interview he told us, "It was a gas being on location with Clint. He was a real gentleman and did everything first class. It was a nice event."
After that came Back to the Future II. He played George McFly, Marty’s father, in the two sequels. He recalled what struck him most about making the film was the set decoration.

Reaper creators/executive producers Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have signed a two-year overall deal with CBS TV Studios. Under the seven-figure deal, which begins June 1, the two will serve as full-time consulting producers on the studio's CBS cop drama Hawaii Five-0, which is all but picked up for next season. Additionally, they will develop new projects for the studio. This marks a return to the crime procedural genre for Fazekas and Butters who spent five seasons on NBC's Law & Order: Svu, rising to co-executive producers and earning two WGA Award nominations. Fazekas and Butters are coming off a two-year overall deal at 20th TV where they created and exec produced last year's ABC pilot Cutthroat and consulted on Dollhouse, Chaos and Terra Nova. Before that, the duo was based at ABC Studios where they created and exec produced Reaper and served as showrunners on the CW dramedy for its two-season run.

Every year, about this time, we always here about which television series may or may not be coming back for another season. Some of them are freshman series and some are veteran shows with proven tack record. TV Guide has put together a list of shows that are skating on thin ice and may be headed for the chopping block. Their list consists of 25 shows, but I've pulled out a few that some of us geeks and fans may be upset to see go. Chaos (CBS) Starring Eric Close, James Murray, Kurtwood Smith, Freddie Rodriguez, Tim Blake Nelson Despite its great and watchable cast, this series never took hold with fans. It's "lighter" tone is both good and bad in that it offers up something different for the CBS core audience, but that is also the problem for this series. Chuck (NBC) Starring Zachery Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin, Ryan McPartlin,...

Some of the comparisons are great, like Satan's "Up There" to Ariel's "Part of Your World.” Basically, they equate the two as a modern Rodgers and Hammerstein duo. I don't know much about theater or Broadway productions, but I'd figure you (and most of Ae) would. Right on schedule, CBS has decided to ditch their new Friday night TV series, Chaos, after just a few weeks on the air. The show stumbled in the ratings right from the start and never recovered. It's no longer on the air but is it cancelled?
A dramatic comedy, Chaos follows a small group of CIA misfit spies who make up the Clandestine Administration and Oversight Services (Caos). In addition to taking on threats to national security, they also must take on redtape and typical government bureaucracy. The TV series stars Freddy Rodriguez, Eric Close, James Murray, Tim Blake Nelson, Carmen Ejogo, Christina Cole, and Kurtwood Smith.
As detailed here, Chaos debuted to a horrible 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.53 million viewers. That was quite a bit lower than the season average of Medium, a series that CBS cancelled because of poor...
