There's no doubt that 2024 was an excellent year for Netflix movies. No matter what your favorite kind of movie is, whether it's romantic comedies or action movies or award seasons dramas, the streaming service had something for everyone. As usual, Netflix looks to keep that tradition alive in 2025 with some of its best movies yet coming down the pipeline.
Prior to the ball dropping on the new year, Netflix had already went ahead and announced release dates for some of its most exciting new movies that will be kicking off 2025 in style. Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx team up in the action-comedy Back in Action in January, while Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt fire up spring with the Russo Brother's sci-fi blockbuster The Electric State in March.

For many tweens and teens growing up in the mid-to-late-1990s, Friday nights meant a bucket of popcorn and sitting down in front of the TV for a night of ABC's "Tgif" programming lineup. Shows like "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," "Sister, Sister," and "Boy Meets World" catered to teens while still being family-friendly enough for primetime network TV, but occasionally they delved into topics that were a little more adult to actually have something to say to their teen audiences. "Boy Meets World" eventually ended up in syndication on The Disney Channel, along with several other "Tgif" favorites, but there were three episodes that originally aired on ABC that Disney Channel refused to air themselves.
Banned episodes are nothing new in the world of television — heck, "Frasier," "Family Guy," and "Friends" all have episodes that were banned from airing in one form or another — but the three that were prevented...

Tonight, on a very special episode of Boy Meets World, Shawn gets crunk…Boy Meets World, like many sitcoms (especially of the Disney-backed Tgif variety), had its share of episodes that took on serious issues, hitting on everything from child abuse to teenage sex to cults. But one episode that still sticks with Rider Strong is “If You Can’t Be With the One You Love”, which focused on Shawn Hunter developing an alcohol dependency, something he doesn’t think the show handled well at all.
As Rider Strong remembered of the season five episode of Pod Meets World (the Boy Meets World rewatch podcast he co-hosts), Shawn was seeing “having a good time with Cory and doing handstands and peeing on cop cars and just, like, woohoo, fun loving. And then in that second half, it’s as if he’s a 45-year-old alcoholic who’s like, ‘I can’t stop,...

The first poster for Fear Street 4, titled Fear Street: Prom Queen, has been unveiled, confirming the release date of the Netflix horror sequel while teasing details for the movie. The streaming platform released the Fear Street trilogy in July 2021, three movies adapted from R.L. Stine's book series of the same name with an interconnected storyline. Stine later announced in January 2024 that the next book would be an adaptation of Prom Queen, the 15th book in the series. It was later revealed to be a standalone sequel to the original trilogy.
Now, Netflix has released the first poster for Fear Street: Prom Queen, confirming a 2025 release window for the upcoming horror sequel. The poster reveals the return of Shadyside High from the original trilogy, with a sign that reads "Senior Prom '88." However, the sign is splattered with blood, while an axe is sitting beside it, also drenched in crimson.

Julia Lester and Antonia Gentry have good chemistry, making the film entertaining despite some execution issues. The movie has a progressive outlook on girl teenhood, with engaging and humorous moments throughout. Prom Dates may not be as funny as expected, but it offers an entertaining story about friendship and love for prom season.
Prom is an age-old backdrop for teen comedies, with a new prom-centric movie releasing consistently around this time of year. The Kim O. Ngyuen-directed Prom Dates finds itself in the small yet growing subgenre of teen comedies, with girls taking the lead as they navigate the messy realities of relationships, sex and friendships. Prom Dates is if Booksmart and Blockers had a crass baby. While it succeeds at focusing on the teens more, the one problem the film has is, unlike Blockers, which splits its narrative with the parents, Prom Dates is not nearly as funny as it should be.

That '70s Show is remembered as a hilarious and lighthearted sitcom, but some convincing fan theories completely change some aspects of the plot. The nostalgia-based series followed teenagers through the 1970s as they made mistakes and built friendships to comical results. It's not the kind of show that is full of mysteries that audiences are left to ponder (aside from where on earth Fez is from), so there is no need to put too much thought into the goings on of That '70s Show. Of course, this hasn't stopped fans, and the result is a few good theories that make the characters and circumstances of the series feel altogether different.
Eric and his friends inhabited the Forman basement for eight full seasons (though he and a few other characters exited That '70s Show before later returning), proving that the unique comedy and concept of the sitcom truly worked. Still, that...

The 2008 slasher movie Prom Night is making the rounds on streaming services, prompting many to wonder if there's any Prom Night 2 news on the airwaves. While actress Brittany Snow didn't reach scream queen status until starring in Ti West's X, she's no stranger to the horror genre. Not counting the crime thriller On the Doll, Prom Night was Snow's first foray into horror, as she starred as senior high school student Donna Keppel. In the film, Donna is stalked by her former obsessive biology teacher Richard Fenton who murdered her parents three years prior.
As Donna and her friends prepare for their senior prom, Fenton makes a desperate attempt to get to her once again. While the movie received less-than-favorable reviews upon its release (via Rotten Tomatoes), that hasn't stopped audiences from scouring the net for Prom Night 2 news as many are hopeful to see Brittany Snow play Donna once again.

The Hellraiser (2022) episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Seemingly all the major slashers have had their remakes from Freddy Krueger to Leatherface to Jason Voorhees to Harry Warden, even Black Christmas and Prom Night have had remakes. For years, the world of horror had been working on bringing a remake of Hellraiser to the screen, one that fans would love, one that would be more extreme than the original, something even Clive Barker had a go at. Somehow, all the remakes seemed to have false starts by getting announced and then disappearing. Then, the Hulu reboot happened, completely different from the original, yet in the same spirit as the novella.

A new era for Warner Bros. animation is about to begin.
Veteran animation executive Bill Damaschke, who rose to lead DreamWorks Animation before its sale to NBCUniversal, is in final talks to take over as head of Warner Animation Group, the beleaguered animation arm of Warner Bros. Pictures..
The company has been leaderless since the exit of executive vp Allison Abbate, who departed in the summer of 2022 amid the Warners takeover by Discovery and the shake-up that followed. That included the shelving of Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, a completed feature that was co-written and produced by Abbate’s husband, Tony Cervone.
The executive is expected to report to Warners film bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. It is unclear what title he will hold.
Damaschke spent 20 years at DreamWorks Animation, joining it from startup level in 1995 and rising to COO. He oversaw productions such as Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon...

BBC Director-General Tim Davie has revealed plans for a “digital first” BBC as the broadcaster celebrates its hundredth year as well as revealing at hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of cutbacks.
Davie said he plans to cut £200 million (250 million) from the budget due to the government’s decision to freeze the license fee, which funds the BBC. The freeze will create a £285m annual funding gap by 2027/28.
Of the £200 million, Davie said £50 million “is already baked into our current budgets” but the rest will have to be delivered by “stopping things and running the organisation better where we can.”
Part of that involves cutting headcount, Variety understands, which has prompted a response from broadcasting union Bectu, a number of whose members work within the BBC.

This story about Ariana DeBose first appeared in the Down to the Wire Issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
From the moment critics first got a taste of Steven Spielberg’s reimagining of “West Side Story,” they lavished praise on Ariana DeBose for her inspired interpretation of Anita, with many reviewers, including TheWrap’s, singling it out as the best part of the film. As the awards season unfolded, DeBose received recognition from SAG, BAFTA and dozens of critics groups — and on February 8, to the surprise of absolutely no one, she became an Oscar nominee for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, making history as the first openly queer woman of color to be nominated for acting.
All of which DeBose is still processing. When asked how she’s wrapping her head around the experience, she could only reply with a tentative “Uh…” before breaking into a giddy laugh. “You...

Exclusive: Brandon Jay McLaren (Turner & Hooch) DeVaughn Nixon (Prom) and Tiffany Lonsdale (Siren) are set for heavily recurring roles opposite Damson Idris in the upcoming fifth season of FX drama Snowfall. The series hails from the late Oscar- and Emmy-nominated director John Singleton & Eric Amadio and Dave Andron.
In the most recent fourth season, business is booming. It’s January 1, 1985. Ronald Reagan has won his re-election campaign, proclaiming it is “morning again in America,” but in South Central, Los Angeles, it feels more like the sun is getting low. The demand for crack cocaine is high, and while our crew of dealers led by Franklin Saint (Idris) are benefitting greatly from the rising tide of addiction, they are also starting to become aware of the damage the drug is doing to the people and to the place they love.
McLaren will play Buckley, a detective with the Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums (C.R.A.S.H.) Unit.

By now you've probably heard that Hole's Courtney Love is upset with Olivia Rodrigo's choice of cover art for the upcoming Sour Prom concert film. Love alleged that the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star copied the crying-prom-queen visuals shot by photographer Ellen von Unwerth for Hole's 1994 album, Live Through This. But is this a legit case of plagiarism, or is Love blowing things out of proportion?
On June 24, Love shared Rodrigo's Sour Prom cover art on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter alongside the caption, "Spot the difference! #twinning!" Rodrigo then commented on Instagram, "love u and live through this sooooo much," to which Love replied, "Olivia - you're welcome. My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! Dm me for deets! I look forward to reading your note!" While Love's initial post made it seem like the singer was flattered or joking with the 18-year-old,...

This Supergirl article contains spoilers for Season 6, Episode 6, “Prom Again!”
Supergirl Season 6 Episode 6
Brainy and Nia’s journey back in time to Midvale saw a marked improvement (and even more time travel!) in its second episode. Part Cat Grant-origin story, part sales pitch for a Dreamer (and Brainy?) spin-off, Olivia Nikkanen (young Alex) and Izabela Vidovic (young Kara) continue to wholly embody Chyler Leigh and Melissa Benoist to an eerily impressive level. For her part, Chyler Leigh herself made her directorial debut in an episode that was so good, Brainy even happy-cried.
This episode resolved two of the biggest issues that plagued the first half of the two-parter. The bounty-hunting aliens were barely on screen, even as they became a bigger plot engine than before. Instead of forcing us to have to look at and listen to them, their ship became scenery and they were something like living MacGuffins,...

Scripted by Benjamin Sutor, Rosensweig’s debut feature follows a man who awakens to find himself stripped of all his possessions, and trapped in a bare room. Aided by a primitive computer, he must learn to survive in his new isolated existence where entertainment is the only currency.

Two cheers for movie billboards.
They are Big—as big as Gary Oldman’s second chin on the Mank sign at Wilshire Blvd. and Wellesley Ave. in West Los Angeles.
They are blustery. “Electrifying . . . A Dazzling Powerhouse Drama” boasts the promo for Judas And The Black Messiah, just down the street.
Okay, in keeping with the spirit of these Covid-weary times, they are also a little sad, like the pitiful look of Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel in News Of The World, gracing a bus stop along the Pacific Coast Highway. So they don’t get a third cheer.
But it’s a relief, finally, to see outdoor film advertising staging a late seasonal bloom in and around Los Angeles.
Those of us who have been walking away the pandemic—what else to do, with restaurants and theaters in lockdown for months?—are pretty weary of tent camps and plywood store fronts.

If anyone wondered what escapist entertainment might look like in a world where no one can escape, the Golden Globes comedy/musical film and television nominations for 2020 — aka The Year Formerly Known as Normal — provide a handy showcase of examples of the phenomenon.
If the drama side of the Golden Globes is all about empowerment (“Nomadland”), outrage (“Promising Young Woman”) and social justice (“The Trial of Chicago 7”), the lighter side is all about crawling into the costumes of the past or ducking into colorful foreign climes (“French Exit”) for adventures in love and explorations of friendship (“Emily in Paris”).
Starting with the most obvious in escapism first, there’s nothing like breaking free of reality and all the laws of nature that govern human existence. On the film front, Max Barbakow’s trippy time warp riff, “Palm Springs,” scored a huge sale to Hulu out of Sundance 2020 and has gone...

The Golden Globes never stick to a script, but this year they couldn’t keep their regular calendar date because of Covid-19. The annual A-list dinner typically kicks off the year in the first weekend of January (with the guest list mapped out in December). But the 78th ceremony was pushed back to late February, with (virtual) hosting duties to be carried out by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler — from different coasts. And the nominations were only announced Wednesday morning, nearly two months later than usual.
Will celebrities still be drinking from their homes? It’s anyone’s guess what a Zoom awards show organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will look — or feel — like. But even during these uncertain times, the Globes are still a launching pad for prestige movies and TV series on the long march to the Oscars or Emmys.
The biggest winner from today’s nominations: Netflix.

This morning, the Golden Globe nominations for 2021 were announced, with Netflix having quite the strong showing. Mank had the best day, overall, with six nominations, followed closely behind by The Trial of the Chicago 7 with five. The love was spread around, elsewhere, though The Father, Nomadland, and Promising Young Woman each were a little above the pack, grabbing four nods. On the flip side, Da 5 Bloods was shut out of a single nom, which has to disappoint Netflix. Still, we now know the Globe nominees, so it’s just a matter of waiting for SAG tomorrow, then reevaluating things… Here now are the Golden Globe nominees: Best Motion Picture – Drama The Father (Trademark Films; Sony Pictures Classics) Mank (Netflix; Netflix) Nomadland (Highwayman / Hear/Say / Cor Cordium; Searchlight Pictures) Promising Young Woman (LuckyChap Entertainment / FilmNation Entertainment; Focus Features) The Trial Of The Chicago 7 (Marc Platt Productions / Dreamworks Pictures...

Dawson's Creek premiered back in 1998, over twenty years ago now. It recently hit Netflix, allowing today's audiences to view it with a fresh eye.
The show was quite ground-breaking for its day. It created the teen drama genre, a show about high school kids, played by adults, dealing with adult problems.
Many shows have done this format since, but Dawson's Creek was the first. It lasted six seasons, ending with a two-hour finale involving a time-jump.
This finale, in my humble opinion, blew. It was full of problems, from storylines to endgames. Yes, endgames, because no, I am not okay with who everybody ended up with.
Before you accuse me of being team Dawson, let me assure you, I am not. However, that doesn't mean Joey should have ended up with Pacey.
I'm still not happy with how Joey's story ended -- or Pacey's, Jen's, or Jack's. Dawson's ending was relatively acceptable.

“The Prom” may be welcome counter-programming for Oscar voters. It’s a sunny, optimistic musical comedy at the end of a dark year many people wish they could forget. And it’s one of the few upbeat contenders in an awards season filled mostly with dramas.
Consider the upper echelons of our official racetrack odds for Best Picture, which are calculated by combining the predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. Leading the way are “Nomadland,” about a struggling working-class woman living out of her van; “Mank,” about the political and professional conflicts of the famed screenwriter of “Citizen Kane”; “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” about anti-war activists railroaded by a corrupt justice department; “One Night in Miami,” in which famous figures clash over their roles in the Civil Rights Movement; and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” in which Black musicians deal with racism and trauma in the 1920s.
