The movie was previously titled "Mr. Lele" with Varun Dhawan in the lead role. However, the film got shelved and director Shashank Khaitan revamped the project as Govinda Naam Mera.
The plot of an action director/fight master from the 80s, settled in Bombay, having South Indian origins and having two wives and two separate families, and eventually meeting an early death, is directly inspired by the life of M.B. Shetty, father of director Rohit Shetty.
