I'm puzzled by the low (so far) ratings of the new film by Maestro Zanussi. The main message of the film is the iteration (as I've lately heard uttered by the raised voices of other great minds) that, if God is NOT something, it is the so-called "success". We have a non-mercantile ingenious mathematician as protagonist and a depressed aging millionaire, not without redeeming qualities, as a provisional antagonist. The emotional void of the protagonist is carefully portrayed and substantiated, with a lover rendering him the support of unconditional love he never knew, not without her own inner struggles. All the cold rational questions gradually seem to disperse, aided by Bach's music which flows throughout. The path from isolation to relationship is sometimes agonising and full of sacrifice, but the reward may even be... levitation.
