Former Fox News host Pete Hegseth was confirmed as Defense Secretary Friday night on a narrow vote in the U.S. Senate, a victory for President Donald Trump despite disturbing allegations about Hegseth’s conduct and questions about his fitness for the job.
Hegseth’s appointment was secured in a late-night vote only when Vice President J.D. Vance stepped in to break the tie after three Senate Republicans voted against him. Hegseth has been accused of sexual assault and of having a history of alcohol abuse. His candidacy seemed in doubt earlier in the week when another person came forward with allegations that Hegseth had been abusive to his former wife.
Hegseth was co-host of Fox News’ “Fox & Friends Weekend” daytime show from 2017 until late last year when he stepped down after Trump nominated him to oversee the nation’s military. He previously served in the National Guard and...

Pete Hegseth, the former co-host of Fox & Friends Weekend, will be the next secretary of defense, after he squeaked by Senate confirmation with Vice President Jd Vance breaking a tie 50-50 vote.
It was an unusually close call for a cabinet nominee, reflecting concerns over Hegseth’s experience and allegations of sexual assault and heavy drinking. Hegseth has denied a number of claims, and said that a sexual encounter with a woman in 2017 was consensual.
Three Republicans — Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-ky), Sen. Susan Collins (R-Me) and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Ak) — voted against his nomination, joining with all Democrats. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-nc) did not announce his decision on the Hegseth nomination until this evening, when he said that he would vote in favor of it.

Updated: Former Fox News host Pete Hegseth’s Defense Secretary nomination cleared a Senate procedural hurdle, pointing to a likely confirmation for one of Donald Trump’s most controversial picks.
The vote was 51-49. Two Republicans, Sen. Susan Collins (R-me) and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-ak), joined with all Democrats in opposing the confirmation.
Murkowski said in a statement that she “cannot in good conscience support his nomination for Secretary of Defense.”
“Managing the Department of Defense requires vast experience and expertise as the department is one of the most complex and powerful organizations in the world, and Mr. Hegseth’s prior roles in his career do not demonstrate to me that he is prepared for such immense responsibility,” she said. “His leadership of two veteran organizations was marked with accusations of financial mismanagement and problems with the workplace culture he fostered.”

Update: Pete Hegseth had a number of tense exchanges with Democratic Senators at his confirmation hearing today, providing for some viral moments, but Republicans signaled their support for the former Fox News host to lead the Pentagon.
A key vote is Sen. Joni Ernst (R-ia), who had expressed some hesitation to back Donald Trump’s pick as news emerged of a settlement with a woman who accused Hegseth of sexual assault.
One of Ernst’s central concerns has been the prevalence of sexual assault in the military. Hegseth told her that he would appoint a senior level official dedicated to sexual assault prevention and response, and she didn’t indicate opposition to his nomination.
Democrats seized on the hearing to highlight Hegseth’s lack of experience leading an organization anywhere near the size of the Pentagon.

Two Fox News hosts and at least one other journalist have captured and shared their own photos and videos of the mysterious drones flying with increasing intensity around New Jersey and elsewhere in the past few weeks, with one saying he saw a craft that was as big as a school bus hovering 100 feet off the ground in Montclair.
“Fox & Friends” host Steve Doocy told his co-hosts Tuesday that he has observed the flying craft multiple times now, coming in “low, they’re about 100 yards, flying over my backyard. … They are buzzing overhead all the time. The scary part is when they stop. They just kind of hover for a little while.”
The FBI, New Jersey State Police and other agencies are scrambling to identify the strange craft, described as “SUV-sized,” able to avoid radar detection and so far elusive to all interception efforts, as helicopters are advised to stay away.

Sean Duffy is entering the real world of Washington D.C., with Donald Trump tapping the Fox Business host and former Representative of Wisconsin to be his nominee as his secretary of transportation. Duffy would replace Pete Buttigieg, who was selected by sitting President Biden to lead the department under his administration.
Duffy represents a double-dip into the bin of Fox personalities for Trump. The President-elect had previously announced that “Fox & Friends Weekend” co-host Pete Hegseth would be appointed secretary of defense. Unlike Hegseth, Duffy has legislative experience, having served as a U.S. Representative from 2011 to 2019. He resigned in 2019 for personal reasons, disclosing that his newborn daughter had been diagnosed with a heart defect.
Prior to his 2010 campaign for the House of Representatives, Duffy had been appointed the District Attorney of Ashland County in Wisconsin in 2002.

Sunny Hostin warned her cohosts on The View that the first batch of Donald Trump‘s cabinet appointments should not give them hope about the incoming administration, and on Wednesday’s (November 13) live episode, she got to play a sly game of “I told you so” over the latest controversial hire. After the previous episode aired, Fox News anchor Pete Hegseth was announced as the next Secretary of Defense, earning immediate criticism from across the political spectrum due to his inexperience for such a vital role in national security. The panelists reviewed footage of him saying, among other things, that women soldiers do not belong in combat, along with media pundits’ mixed reactions to the news. Whoopi Goldberg took the first dig by noting that Hegseth is the host of Fox & Friends Weekend and not the daily show and asked, “Is this the guy who’s qualified to make...

President-elect Donald Trump assigned Elon Musk on Tuesday to “dismantle” the U.S. bureaucracy, and named a longtime Fox News host, Pete Hegseth, to lead the Pentagon.
Musk, the billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, had offered himself during the campaign as someone who could cut waste out of the federal budget. In late October, he claimed he could cut $2 trillion.
Trump said that Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican primary candidate, would provide outside advice to the administration from a “Department of Government Efficiency.” The acronym Doge is also a nod to the Dogecoin cryptocurrency that has been associated with Musk — a self-serving move that raised immediate hackles among pundits given that the price of Dogecoin shot up with the announcement.
“Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies,” Trump said in a statement.

A still image from former President Donald Trump’s interview with “Fox & Friends Weekend.” (Still frame via broadcast)
Former President Donald Trump’s first television interview since his conviction in a New York state criminal case brought 1.174 million viewers to the Fox News Channel on Sunday, according to Nielsen data reviewed by The Desk.
During the interview, Trump asserted that his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records and other criminal activity amounted to a “weaponization” of the legal system, which he characterized as “a very dangerous thing.”
The case centered around business documents Trump and others altered in order to conceal payments made to adult film star Stephanie Clifford, better known by her screen name “Stormy Daniels.” Trump paid Clifford through his then-personal attorney, Michael Cohen, then reimbursed Cohen under the guise of “legal expenses.”
Trump has maintained his innocence in the matter. Cohen testified against the former president last month.

In Jan. 2021, Tucker Carlson told a Fox News colleague that he hated Donald Trump “passionately.” But less than two months earlier he was singing a dramatically different tune, newly leaked texts reveal.
In an exchange with his senior producer, obtained by the Daily Beast, the recently fired host was so upset about the unusually negative coverage Fox was giving Trump that he said he was “happy to start threating people” to make it stop.
The text exchange happened Nov. 19, 2020, as Fox News was suffering a severe drop in ratings caused by the exodus of viewers angry that it had accurately called the election for Joe Biden and then — temporarily — refused to support Trump’s constant lying about the loss.
The day before, Fox had published this story about Trump’s decision to hold the annual presidential “pardon” of a turkey. The article’s opening paragraph noted this was happening, “despite...
