Distributors in the Us, the UK and Turkey have bought The Fear of Darkness, a supernatural thriller from writer-director Chris Fitchett.

Producer Mark Overett is planning to stage Q&A screenings attended by Fitchett and key cast around Australia following the April 11 world premiere at the Gold Coast Film Festival.

He.s just done a deal with Transmission to release the film on DVD and Blu-ray, VOD and pay-per-view.

The saga of a brilliant young psychiatrist who is forced to confront the dark creature that dwells deep within her own unconscious when she investigates the disappearance of a university student, the film stars Penelope Mitchell, Maeve Dermody, Aaron Pedersen, Mark Leonard Winter, Damien Garvey and Christopher Sommers.

Greg Grunberg has signed with Paradigm. The actor-writer-producer recurs on Showtime’s Masters Of Sex, and his TV credits also include The Client List, Heroes, Lost, Alias and Felicity. Grunberg’s film credits include Big Ass Spider!, Super 8, The Ladykillers and Austin Powers in Goldmember. He also wrote, produced and starred in the romantic comedy Group Sex. He continues to be repped by Sc Management.

Levi Miller has inked with Wme. The 12-year-old recently landed the lead role of Peter Pan in Pan, Warner Bros’ 2015 adaptation of the classic J.M. Barrie novel. The film also stars Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund and Rooney Mara. Miller’s credits include TV’s Terra Nova, the feature A Heartbeat Away and short films Great Adventures and Akiva. Maeve Dermody, Penelope Mitchell and Damien Garvey have been cast in The Fear of Darkness, a supernatural thriller from writer-director Chris Fitchett which starts shooting March 6 on the Gold Coast.

Dermody (Serangoon Road, Griff the Invisible) will play a brilliant young psychiatrist who is forced to confront the dark creature that dwells deep within her when she investigates the disappearance of a female university student.

Mitchell, who was a regular in the Us TV series Hemlock Grove and appears in The Vampire Diaries, plays a patient in a psychiatric clinic who is accused of a gruesome crime.

Damien Garvey (Rake, Network Ten.s upcoming Secrets & Lies) will portray a cop who investigates the disappearance. Casting of two other key roles is due to be confirmed shortly.

Actors Josh Lawson and Isabel Lucas have been named Best Hollywood Newcomers at the Beverly Hills Film, TV and New Media Festival for their roles in an Australian film which is yet to get distribution two years after being made.

Despite gaining recognition at a number of festivals including picking up the Melbourne International Film Festival audience award, it now looks like The Wedding Party will not get a release this year.

Directed by Amanda Jane and produced by Nicole Minchin, The Wedding Party opened Miff last year.

In late May, Minchin told Encore: “We are looking forward to a local release in the second half of this year with an announcement in the coming weeks.”

From Nirvana (and Isabel Lucas) fans to seventy-year-olds, Gale Edwards’ debut feature A Heartbeat Away targets an unusually wide demographic. Miguel Gonzalez reports.

Originally titled Montague Municipal, the script was submitted by a Queensland Investment Corporation equities dealer, Julia Kincade, to an initiative set up by the Pftc and Pictures in Paradise to find new writers.

“New writers come up with fantastic ideas and they’re very open to changes, which I’m not sure more experienced writers are. The downside is that it can sometimes take a long time, because they’re not full-time writers and they’ve got other jobs,” said producer Chris Fitchett.

Two scripts from that scheme were soon made into films, Blurred in 2002 and Under the Radar in 2004, but the process for this one would be much slower. Chris Fitchett was working on the film as script editor with Brown producing, but both got distracted by other projects.

Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.

Analysis: Disney's attempt at creating the next "High School Musical" franchise for itself, this teen romantic comedy is a batch of clique cliches - the beauty queen, the rebel with better hair than anyone else in the film, the handsome yet dumb foreign exchange student, the 'so above it' geek who really wants to belong, and at least one or two 'fugly' girls.

Summary: Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned.

Analysis: It really wasn't until about three months before its release that Warner Brothers realised "The Hangover" was going to be a hit. Test screening response was through the roof, while the trailer had great reaction after premiering at ShoWest and online. About that time they commissioned director Todd Phillips, along with his "Old School" and "Road Trip" scribe Scot Armstrong, to pen a sequel. Yet they still waited to see how the first one went before fully committing to the follow-up.

The wait didn't last long.

Enjoying the beautiful Big Apple weather, Isabel Lucas was spotted out in New York City on Wednesday (September 15).

The “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” babe looked cute as she casually walked along with a friend and two fluffy pups.

Yesterday, Ms Lucas listened to some tunes as she sauntered around solo in NYC, paying little attention to the snapping photogs.

According to IMDb’s website, Isabel has three films in the post-production stage - “Red Dawn” is set for a 2010 release, and the others, “A Heartbeat Away” and “Immortals,” are looking at 2011 release dates.

Hoyts Distribution has announced that A Heartbeat Away will have a wide release on March 3, 2011.

“Hoyts Distribution and we filmmakers see A Heartbeat Away as a multiplex film, ” producer Chris Fitchett told Encore in February.

A Heartbeat Away is theatre director Gale Edwards’ first film. It was shot in Brisbane and financed by Screen Australia, Screen Queensland, Cutting Edge and UK’s Quickfire Films.

Chris Fitchett produces, alongside executive producers Chris Brown (Pictures in Paradise), John Lee (Cutting Edge), Gary Hamilton and James Atherton (Arclight Films).

The story is about an aspiring rock guitarist who is forced to take over the musical direction of his father’s marching band just weeks before a major competition. The cast includes Isabel Lucas, Sebastian Gregory, Williams Zappa, Tammy Macintosh and Colin Friels.

Beginning her week with a leisurely lunch, Isabel Lucas was spotted in the West Village of Los Angeles yesterday (May 24).

The “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” hottie looked focused as she walked to a local eatery, reading some papers along the way.

In career news, Miss Lucas has been keeping busy as of late, with several projects in the pipeline at this time.

Among her upcoming films are “Immortals,” “Red Dawn,” “Kin,” and “A Heartbeat Away,” all due out later this year and early 2011.
