Jason David Frank asked the costume and prop designers to model the cursed sword in the movie after the sword his character used in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season one, the Sword of Darkness, given to him by Rita Repulsa when he was the evil Green Ranger. If you look at it hard enough it is similar.
The Sword of Darkness was originally used in the Sentai season that was adapted into MMPR season one.
