Buoyed with Paco Plaza’s “Sister Death” riding high in Netflix non-English film global rankings for a second week running, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Madrid-based El Estudio has named seasoned Spanish showrunner Tirso Calero, creator and script co-ordinator on “Servir y Proteger,” “Bandolera” and “L’Alqueria Blanca,” as TV contents director in Spain. He is based out of Madrid. His incorporation coincides with the creation of a TV division at El Estudio, which Calero will head up.
Taking effect from last week, the appointment makes large strategic sense. El Estudio founders and chiefs Enrique López Lavigne and Pablo Cruz are among the top and most cosmopolitan film producers in the Spanish-speaking world, Cruz ranking as Mexico’s best-known arthouse/crossover movie honcho and a driving force behind modern-day Mexican cinema when heading up Canana; and López Lavigne rating as one of Spain’s most innovative producers, seen most recently in...

Btf Media and American Cinema Inspires (Aci) are bowing the trailer to “Finding Love in Sisters,” the second film they have co-produced under their partnership pact.
The drama directed by Jeff Day (“Midway to Love”) follows Seattle-based junior lawyer Esperanza Barboza (Laura Carmine) who’s just been assigned to her dream case and is about to celebrate her birthday with her beau.
She finds herself, however, longing for something more than what seems to be a perfect life. News of her mother’s sudden passing takes her back home and to the even more shocking news that her mother has bequeathed the house to her. There are only two conditions: That she share the house and make peace with her estranged sisters, Caridad (Marielena Dávila) and Faith (Valentina Izarra).

Sometimes quite literally, as in “Killing Eve,” where Jodie Comer’s Villanelle, a brilliant, if nonchalant, female assassin, finds an original use for a hair-pin and an Italian mobster’s left eye. “Bullets,” from Finland’s Vertigo, which won the sneak-peek MipDrama Buyers Summit Coup de Coeur, forefronts two strong women – an undercover cop, an ex-terrorist – in a series which is both high-octane political thriller and a female friendship drama. “Angelica,” one of the most liked projects at In Development, is set at the last abortion clinic in a conservative U.S. state which becomes a flashpoint for broader divisive social confrontation. Of the 12 drama series projects presented at In Development, there...
