The colony of Terra Nova exists about 85 million years ago. The KT event which caused the extinction of the dinosaurs occurred about 65 million years ago. They've got about 20 million years to prepare.

Also, there is a possibility that the meteor will never hit - Terra Nova is in an alternate timeline. This means that what has happened in the past for the people in 2149 may not happen for the Terra Nova people.

According to creator Craig Silverstein, the commander can communicate with the people in 2149 only while the portal is open . Only while it is open can he order more supplies, communicate info back and forth. The main drawback with this is that if he orders medical supplies, he has to wait till the next opening to get them. The portal is only capable of transporting matter in one direction, radio waves have been proposed to have no mass and so can pass back against the stream through the portal. As for supplies, there is probably an agreement for a regular shipment of certain vital supplies (common drugs, weapons etc), more specialised items might be obtainable immediately - depends on how long the portal can be kept open for

Taylor was the first man through the time rift. He was immediately followed through by the men he was leading. However, when they emerged in the past Taylor came out 118 days earlier than his men, meaning that he had to survive on his own for almost four months. It is not clear why people from subsequent migrations show up at the same time even though they immediately follow each other through. The scientists in the future may have had time to iron out the flaws after taylor reported the problem or maybe this is an event which could happen again when something goes slightly wrong with the portal or theres a power fluctuation in the machinery etc so possibly will appear again as a plot device when they are short of supplys etc.

She was in the backpack because Liz (the mother) couldn't possibly walk down the runway to the portal with three kids. Population control means 2 children only and Liz mentions in the prison scene that while she has been recruited to go to Terra Nova, they are not allowing her to take Zoey. So Zoey has to be smuggled in.

As explained in the pilot episode, the Terra Nova colony exists, or appears to exist, in an alternate timeline. Thus, the existence of the colony won't cause the present to change at all.

The Extended Version of the series finale of Terra Nova is more than 7minutes longer, however, these minutes do not really answer any question or make the abrupt ending more plausible.
