María Gabriela De Faría, whose credits include Deadly Class and The Exorcism of God, plays a villain known as The Engineer, a member of The Authority, in director James Gunn’s Superman, which is set to reach theatres on July 11th, 2025. She’ll soon be wrapping up her work on that film – and Deadline reports that she has already signed on to her next project. De Faría is set to star in the serial killer film Romanticizing Monsters for director Berkley Brady (Dark Nature).

De Faría will be taking on the role of Amelia Velez, a reporter and true crime podcaster investigating a series of missing person cases linked to an active serial killer that her boss and the police don’t believe exists.

Deadline reports today that María Gabriela de Faría will be playing the lead role in serial killer thriller Romanticizing Monsters from director Berkley Brady (Dark Nature).

Deadline details in their exclusive report, “The film centers around De Faría’s character, Amelia Velez, a reporter and true crime podcaster investigating a series of missing person cases linked to an active serial killer that her boss and the police don’t believe exists.”

Exclusive: Cameras have started rolling in Tokyo on Akashi, the debut feature from Japanese and Canadian writer-director Mayumi Yoshida.

Yoshida, best known as an actor for her role in The Man in The High Castle, will also star in the film alongside veteran performers Hana Kino, Chieko Matsubara, Kunio Murai, and rising performer Ryo Tajima.

Described as a “coming-of-age love story,” Akashi follows Kana (Yoshida), an artist who is at a crossroads in her career. After finding out her Grandmother (Kino) has passed, she returns home to Tokyo for the funeral, where she rekindles a romance with childhood love Hiro (Tajima) and uncovers a family secret about her Grandpa (Murai).

Sales agency The Coven and sister label Foxglove Entertainment head to TIFF with a slate of films led by the Juggalo crime caper Off Ramp.

Nathan Tape directed the story about a couple of degenerate Juggalos – the term given to fans of hip hop group Insane Clown Posse – who journey through America’s grim underbelly to attend The Gathering of the Juggalos, the one place where they feel accepted. The cast includes trans actor Scott Turner Schofield.

Dark Nature begins with a much different, and more realistic horror than what follows. Joy is busy in the kitchen making dinner when Derek gets home. It’s obvious he’s not happy and from the way both Joy and the dog react we know that is a very bad thing. She barely escapes, the dog isn’t so lucky.

Six months later Joy is still trying to get past this trauma and her friend Carmen thinks she has the solution. She convinces her to join her, Tara (Helen Belay; Abracadavers), Shaina and some others on a camping trip/therapy session with the somewhat controversial Dr. Dunnely, “You guys talk about her like you’re in a cult”.

Epic Pictures Group will release horror-thriller Dark Nature, part of the Fantastic 7 genre line-up in the Cannes market last year, in limited US theatrical release on May 19 under its Dread label.

Berkley Brady wrote and directed the story about a survivor of an abusive relationship who attends a weekend retreat where she and others must confront a terrifying entity.

Hannah Anderson, Madison Walsh, Kyra Harper and Helen Belay star in Dark Nature, and Michael Peterson produced. Epic will release it on VoD on May 23.

LA-based sales, financing and distribution company Blue Fox Entertainment has hired Kalani Dreimanis as vice president of international sales ahead of the EFM later this month.

The line-up for Grimmfest’s International Festival of Fantastic Film 2022 edition has been unveiled.

“The Loneliest Boy In The World” (U.K.) is set to open the U.K. horror and genre festival. The dark comedy, which stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Ashley Benson and Ben Miller is directed by Martin Owen and tells the story of “an unstable and otherworldly mother’s boy [who] seeks a replacement family in the local cemetery.”

Lee Thongkham’s “The Lake” (Thailand), a creature feature that sees the inhabitants of a small town take on a “threat of huge proportions,” will close the festival four days later.

Also on the line-up are the international premiere for Justin Long and Kate Bosworth’s “House Of Darkness,” (U.S.), Cannes film “Final Cut” (France) from from Oscar-winning writer-director Michel Hazanavicius, and Vincenzo Ricchiuto’s “The Goldsmith” (Italy), which features Italian cinema star Stefania Casini.

Final Cut from Michel Hazanavicius and Neil Labute’s House Of Darkness are among this year’s line-up for Grimmfest, a UK horror, sci-fi and fantasy festival, which will be held in Manchester frorm October 6-9.

Hazanavicius’ French comedy horror, a remake of 2017 Japanese title One Cut From The Dead, opened Cannes out of competition earlier this year.

House Of Darkness stars Justin Long and Kate Bosworth whose casual date takes a sinister turn. The gothic horror had its world premiere at Montreal’s Fantastia festival last month.

Beginning with mundane but no less disturbing domestic horrors and moving on to a survival situation in a remote part of the Canadian Rockies, Berkley Brady’s Dark Nature is one of those films which evidently has as much story behind its development as it puts up onscreen. It played as part of 2022’s Fantasia International Film Festival, and it follows a troubled woman, Joy (Hannah Emily Anderson), as she tries to get over an abusive relationship by going on a hiking trip with a therapist and a group of women who have all experienced traumas of their own. I met up with Berkley early on in the festival and asked her about the origins of the story.
