In this film, Tony Leung Chiu-wai plays the Director of Shanghai's Political Security Department for the Wang Jingwei regime. In Lust, Caution (2007), he played the role of Mr. Yee, a special agent and recruiter of the puppet government of Wang Jingwei.
Director Er Cheng revealed the original ending of the film on weibo. Mr. Ye, played by Yibo Wang, was never an undercover spy of CPC in the original script. He was willing to do anything to survive, even betraying his own country. At the end, the character was killed by Mr. He, played by Tony Leung, who was desperately seeking vengeance for his loved wife Chen, who was brutally murdered by Mr. Ye. This version of ending never got to meet screens before it was rewritten due to censorship issues.
