The hospital set was filmed in an old school in Leeds. It took 8 weeks for production designers to transform the school into St Matthew's Hospital.
The actors prepared for their roles by watching operations; James Nesbitt watched two neurosurgeons performing brain surgery and Sarah Parish watched heart surgery.
