If yet another logo change and the confirmed involvement of Doctor Strange weren’t enough to get you excited for Thor: Ragnarok (admit it, the latter did it more for you), leave it to Marvel Studios’ man of vision Kevin Feige to keep chatter going.
As entertaining as the first two Thor films were – and we have no doubt the third offering will be a hit – the Son of Odin has yet to break the billion dollar mark as other non-Avengers movies put forth by the studio have, namely Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3. And, mark my words, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will achieve that milestone as well.
Perhaps it’s due to the fact that the Thor film franchise has yet to fully embrace all that the source material has to offer and spends too much time on Earth. I know that when I...

Craig Kyle, who served as executive producer on the first two Thor films, is going to have a new responsibility on the next sequel. Marvel has hired their very own to be a fulltime screenwriter, beginning by co-writing Thor 3 with Christopher Yost.
Kevin Feiged expressed his excitement about Kyle’s new job saying, “I am proud of Craig and have enjoyed working with him over these past years. His creative instincts have helped shape ‘Thor’ and ‘Thor: The Dark World’ at every level of the filmmaking process. The entire team at Marvel is very happy to continue collaborating with Craig as he continues as a screenwriter working with Christopher on the forthcoming chapter of Thor’s adventure.”

If you don't fancy watching the vid, Dushku basically goes into detail about this version of Catwoman. Her relationship with the other characters around her and what makes her tick. She also talks about her own experiences growing up as a comic book fan. Romano says she has been looking to work with Dushku for years, and thought this role was perfect for her. She also speaks about the problems casting a minor to voice young prostitute Holly Robinson. She then goes into the numerous time she has cast Batman in various animated projects. Much more too, ah just watch it! Batman: Year One is directed by Sam Lui (The Batman, Thor: Tales of Asgard) and Lauren Montgomery (Superman/Batman Apocalypse, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights), and features the voice talents of Benjamin McKenzie (Bruce Wayne / Batman), Bryan Cranston (Jim Gordon), Eliza Dushku (Selina Kyle / Catwoman) and Katee Sackhoff (Sarah Essen...

You can’t judge a movie by its cover. Let’s say you’ve just watched Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Thor movie, and suddenly you find yourself interested in a character you didn’t have any significant interest in beforehand. You spot the animated feature Thor: Tales Of Asgard, its cover sporting an Alex Ross painting of a muscular Thor, raising a sword to the heavens while lightning ripples around him. “Thor surprised me,” you think to yourself, “so this should be cool.”

With the big action of the Thor feature film now in theaters of course it makes sense for Marvel to try and put Thor everywhere. They teamed with Lionsgate to bring us the direct-to-dvd and Blu-ray Thor: Tales of Asgard. The animated film tells the story of a teenaged Thor before the Hammer and before he became a hero, at least in the sense that we know him from modern comics or even from the live-action film. In the story, Thor is protected by his father Odin to the point that he is allowed to win exhibition fights with Asgard’s most powerful warriors. When he is called out on his fake wins by Sif, a young woman who is already an amazing warrior, Thor...

The Film:
Marvel might be dominating the movie world, but their animated films, which started back a few years ago, are only little whimpers when compared to DC’s animated films. In the last few films, this has changed for Marvel, as they began crafting original, brave productions like in Next Avengers and Planet Hulk, as well as the incredibly fun Hulk Vs. Delayed to be timed with his big screen debut (review here), Thor: Tales of Asgard isn’t as great as those I’ve mentioned, but even on cruise control, it’s better than Marvel/Lgf’s earlier efforts.
Essentially, Thor: Tales of Asgard acts like a prequel to Thor, telling the story of when a younger Thor was developing his courage and hero status. It’s young Thor, before the Hammer, and while that doesn’t sound promising, the writing is pretty above par for the idea,...

Chicago – Animated Marvel Features and Lionsgate very purposefully released a straight-to-dvd Thor movie this month to try and cash in a bit on the success of the summer blockbuster “Thor” with Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. With some of the same characters, enemies, and locations, the animated version plays not unlike a Saturday morning cartoon version of what you just saw in theaters. Potential viewers under twelve should find enough action here to not consider their time wasted, but anyone older will surely be a a bit bored.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor” is about to crest $400 million worldwide and so it makes sense that toys, games, and other peripheral merchandise would hit the market to try and cash in on the film’s success. “Tales of Asgard” could have been a clever expansion of the Marvel comic and hit film but it plays too much like an afterthought,...

Yes friends, it's May, which means the "summer" movie season is upon us. Join me as we hack our way through this month's uneven crop of cinematic offerings for families.
Notable Theatrical Releases in Austin (May)
Hoodwinked Too: Hood Vs. Evil (in theaters now, PG) -- Somehow the original Hoodwinked slipped by me, but based on the 11 percent Tomatometer rating for this sequel, I'm not at all upset about it. The trailer for Hoodwinked Too informs us that there's a covert agency dedicated to ensuring happy endings to fairy tales. That's about all I absorbed before a cavalcade of dumb, offensive jokes made me lose interest. No kidding: a two-and-a-half-minute trailer managed to squeeze in multiple fart jokes, homophobia, ageism, racism, out-of-date movie references, and (perhaps worst of all) the hackneyed comedy phrase "awkwaaard!" that South Park lampooned in the Funnybot episode just two weeks ago. (Nsfw clip here.) Oh,...

We gave you a hefty gallery of "Thor: Tales of Asgard" images last week, and we were the first to debut the "Tales of Asgard" trailer more than a year ago. Today we have a peek at the other side of the project, with a behind-the-scenes video that looks at the inspiration for the film's unique take on Thor.

The Mechanic
I remember some were kind of upset that this film was a remake of the Charlies Bronson film, but that seems pointless now. Jason Statham and Ben Foster rock this baby out, and is more than servicable for action-junkies…until Statham returns in The Expendables 2. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Buy

Despite the hotties in the cast, the film – which is a thriller – is devoid of any such thrills, suspense, or terror. It’s completely inept. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Avoid Donny says:...

Diabolique (Criterion Collection) I can't even begin to tell you how much I recommend this film, it as absolute stunner and I am frustrated I didn't get a chance to watch this new Blu-ray edition before leaving for Cannes as I'm sure it's just sitting back home in my mailbox waiting for me to devour. If you haven't seen it I wholeheartedly suggest you give it a try and if you are a regular Criterion customer I can't see how this wouldn't be an acceptable blind buy.
Also, while you're at it, you should also consider another great Henri-Georges Clouzot Blu-ray, Wages of Fear, which Criterion released last April. You can read my review of that right here and you can believe when I get home from Cannes I will be diving into Diabolique as well.

Produced in 2009 but held until this week to capitalize on the live-action adaptation of Marvel’s Thor, Lionsgate releases Thor: Tales of Asgard, a 77-minute animated feature that harkens back to the Thunder God’s youth. The title harkens back to the beloved back-up feature that ran behind the main story in Journey Into Mystery for several years as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby explored the earlier days of the Asgardians or told stories adapted from the Norse myths. This approach is a clever one for an animated feature and certainly freed the writers and designers from aping whatever the current look of the hero was.
Still, watching this largely entertaining film still feels like it was inspired by some other universe’s Thor comic. Everything is familiar but just off a shade from personality to the look. It’s certainly not an Asgard Jack designed nor does it really...

Thor: Tales of Asgard
Directed by: Sam Liu
Cast: Matthew Wolf, Chris Britton, Grey DeLisle, Tara Strong, Rick Gomez (voices)
Running Time: 1 hr 17 mins
Rating: Nr
Due Out: May 17, 2011
Plot: A prequel to the live action blockbuster Thor, this animated feature follows Thor the teenager as he ventures to the Frost Giants’ realm in search of a sacred and powerful sword.
Who’S It For? Younger viewers who may not even be old enough to see Thor will likely enjoy this simple story, though they might be bored by the movie’s lack of action and focus on drama. Fans of Thor might enjoy the way it captures the Asgardian background of Thor’s character.
Movie:
It’s unclear as to whether the creators of this animated feature prequel had access to a viewing of Thor while this project was in the development. For one, the writers might...

Thor is more popular than ever, thanks to a his smash-hit blockbuster movie (read our review Here), and Marvel is capitalizing on that momentum by launching a multi-media campaign for the character, including Marvel Animation’s feature-length film, Thor: Tales of Asgard, which serves as a quasi-prequel to the movie.
But is Tales of Asgard a worthy continuation of the mythos established in the Thor movie, or a cartoon that only kids will enjoy? Short answer: it’s a little bit of both.

In August 1962, Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and Larry Lieber created Thor, a new superhero based off of the Norse God, and from that issue of Journey into Mystery, the God of Thunder has gone onto become one of the iconic heroes associated with the Avengers. Even though his big screen debut was in this summer’s Thor (reviews here and here), and will be seen next year in Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor has had numerous incarnations on TV, both in live-action and in animation, so with Lionsgate’s release of Thor: Tales of Asgard May 17th on Blu-ray/DVD, Killer Film takes a look back at the other appearances of the God of Thunder.

Last year, we got a glimpse of Thor: Tales of Asgard, which looked incredibly promising as an animated feature film. Lionsgate is released the film, at long last, direct-to-dvd on Tuesday, while everyone has Norse gods on the mind. For those less familiar with the comic, they have provided a slideshow to introduce audiences to the cast of characters, ranging from Thor, his foster brother Loki, Allfather Odin, the fierce Sif, the valiant Warriors Three, Amora the Enchantress and the legendary Frost Giants, among others.

Blow Out (Criterion) Brian De Palma’s greatest Hitchcock homage, with a dash of Antonioni thrown in for good measure. John Travolta gives one of his best turns as a sound-effects engineer who unwittingly records a political assassination, then finds himself hunted by a ruthless hitman (John Lithgow, a memorably creepy psycho) after saving the life of the kindly, albeit dim-witted call girl (Nancy Allen, excellent) who was with the deceased. Terrific blend of suspense and very black humor, perhaps De Palma’s finest hour as an auteur. Beautifully shot by Vilmos Zsigmond. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with De Palma, Allen, cameraman Garrett Brown; Photo gallery; De Palma’s 1967 feature Murder a la Mod; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 2.0 surround.
Kes (Criterion) Ken Loach’s landmark 1970 film is both a heart-rending portrait of adolescence, and a pointed socio-political commentary on life in the North of England.

It seems odd that Thor, of all of Marvel's properties, is getting as much attention as it is. Not just the Kenneth Brannagh-directed film, but also a couple of other ways. Thor is getting a full-court press from Marvel in the days leading up to May 6th, the release date for the feature-length film that will serve as another entry into the pre-Avengers series of hero stories. I figured in the interest of brevity, we'd combine previews of all of the different entries into one place.
First of all, Marvel is also gearing up to release Thor: Tales Of Asgard, an anime-inspired animated film that tells of the early adventures of Thor and his adopted brother Loki. Matthew Wolf, who voiced Thor in the animated Hulk Vs. film, will once again reprise his role, with Rick Gomez as Loki. Here's the trailer:
And here's a brief clip:
I'm not blown away by it,...
