The first major film performance by Marianne Jean Baptiste (The Receptionist), who would go on to historically become the first Black British woman to be nominated for an Oscar for Secrets and Lies (dir: Mike Leigh). The film also features Jo Martin (SkyHook) who would also go on to famously become the first actor of colour to play Dr. Who.

Produced by leading black independent producer Charles Thompson through Time and Vision Films, Distinction attracted very positive critical appraisal from many quarters of the British and international film and television industry and received a standing ovation from Gurinda Chada (dir: Bend it Like Beckham).

Her first short, Distinction is now regarded as an underground classic and resides in the British Film Institute National Archives. Avril wrote the scripts for the BABYFATHER series and has adapted novels and contributed to TV series such as Silent Witness, Casualty, and many major drama series.
