Kidulthood director Menhaj Huda returns to UK cinemas this week with Everywhere and Nowhere, another coming-of-age tale focusing on a British Asian teenager (James Floyd, pictured below) wrestling with how to lead his own life, while having to contend with what’s expected of him from his family and culture.
We had the chance to chat with Huda about the film (which he co-wrote) and how he related to the characters in the film when he was growing up.
How much does the film reflect your own upbringing?
The side which wasn’t a struggle for me was my decision to take a creative path in my career (in the film, lead character Ash wants to be a DJ, much to the disapproval of his father).
The double life thing was definitely something I encountered, and trying to keep my love for clubbing/raving separate from my family.
This is another rites of passage tale.

Deep End (15)
(Jerzy Skolimowski, 1970, UK) John Moulder-Brown, Jane Asher. 92 mins
Where has this movie been for the past 40 years? It's as fresh and stylish a snapshot of late-60s Britain as we've ever seen, and a twisted coming-of-ager to boot. New kid Moulder-Brown wades into the depths of adulthood at the public bathhouse, and develops an unhealthy obsession with his worldlier colleague. The acting is natural, the soundtrack groovy (Can, Cat Stevens) and the visuals bold.
Hanna (12A)
(Joe Wright, 2011, Us/UK/Ger) Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana. 111 mins
A novel fusion of Bourne and The Wizard Of Oz, this thriller packs some visual punches (aided by a Chemical Brothers score) and trowels on the symbolism. Blanchett relishes her she-wolf role, hunting little teen assassin Ronan across Europe.
13 Assassins (15)
(Takashi Miike, 2010, Jap/UK) Kôji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, Yûsuke Iseya. 125 mins
Noble samurai spring a trap for an evil lord...

A few facts about new Britflick Everywhere And Nowhere. Simon Webbe off Blue is in it. James Buckley off The Inbetweeners is in it. Oh, and it’s directed by Menhaj Huda, who previously brought us Kidulthood. It’s the story off a well brought up, well educated, well-to-do young man called Ash Khan (played by newcomer James Floyd), seemingly destined to join the family business and yet desperate to make a go of it as a DJ in Lahndahn Tahn.Sleepy suburbs vs. inner city clubs, it’s a big clash of cultures, music, sex, drugs, rock and roll – okay, dance music – and it’s all coming out May 6.Here’s an exclusive clip for you to wrap your eyes around, and when you’re done with that – or, maybe, before you take a look at that – why not sneak a glimpse at the trailer, which you can see here.

London -- "Kidulthood" director Menhaj Huda has called on James Floyd, Adam Deacon, Alyy Khan and singer-songwriter and actor Simon Webbe to assemble for "Everywhere and Nowhere," his coming-of-age drama.
Huda, whose London-set urban horror flick "Comedown" scared up interest from Canal Plus owned U.K. distributor Optimum Releasing, is following it up with a tale of a young British Asian torn between the traditions of suburban family life and his passion for DJ-ing
The project rolls at Pinewood Studios and around London and marks the first of a number of planned collaborations between producer Sam Tromans and Huda under Troman's banner Arena Productions.
Tromans, an exec producer on the "Dead Man Running" is also exec producing "Burning Man," currently shooting in Sydney with Matthew Goode and Rose Byrne starring. Huda penned "Everywhere" in addition to directing it.
Composer Nitin Sawhney is on board to produce the soundtrack for Huda's...
