Most people thank (or blame) Ridley Scott's 1984 Macintosh ad for inventing the spectacle of the Super Bowl commercial, but the Independence Day spot that 20th Century Fox unleashed during the big game in 1996 was an equally significant milestone. Ever since 100 million Americans gawked at their televisions in awe as a massive alien spaceship blew up the White House, the football championship has become the ultimate launching pad for the next wave of spring and summer blockbusters. These days, it almost feels like there’s an entire Comic-Con worth of...

I love movie and television soundtracks. I’ll often use a given soundtrack while I work, letting it fuel my writing. I can’t listen to music with lyrics in them; that interferes with my process. I’ll get themes, characters, even scenes or whole plots from the music. Soundtrack music is in service of the story that the film is trying to tell; it’s a part of the narrative, heightening the emotion that’s being invoked.
I have my own particular favorites. The composers usually have a large body of work but certain key works resonate within me – Jerry Goldsmith’s Chinatown and Patton, James Horner with Field of Dreams, Shaun Davey’s Waking Ned Devine, Elmer Bernstein’s To Kill A Mockingbird (has there ever been a more beautiful and evocative theme?) and, of course, The Magnificent Seven.

The International Film Music Critics Association has revealed nominations for best in movie music from 2014, and prolific composers James Newton Howard ("The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," "Maleficent") and Alexandre Desplat ("Godzilla," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "The Monuments Men") led the way with seven and six nominations respectively. Film score of the year contenders include just two Best Original Score Oscar nominees: "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and Hans Zimmer's "Interstellar." "The Imitation Game" and Jóhann Jóhannsson's "Theory of Everything," however, were both nominated in the drama category. "Maleficent" landed the most nominations for a film with four, while DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon 2" picked up three (each of them another if you count composer of the year honors for Howard and John Powell respectively). Check out the full list of nominees below. Winners will be revealed on Feb. 19. And be sure...

Not a lot to say in the pre-amble to this week’s selection of titles. Should probably apologise for the negativity in advance because a lot of the below is dreck this week across any content provider apart from the occasional bright spot and a new Netflix exclusive. Hopefully you will be able to at least find something worth a look that floats your boat.
This week’s titles of note are as follows:
Gravity (2013)
There really isn’t anymore praise that I can heap on Alfonso Cuaron’s outer space thrill ride that hasn’t been heaped upon it already. Upon repeat viewing what impresses more and more is the technical marvel that this film represents with Gravity being a massive leap forward in the use of virtual sets as well as animation that looks like real people.

The Expendables 3 is debuting this weekend in 40 territories including Russia, the UK, Mexico and Australia — and features a powerhouse ensemble that includes Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer and Kellan Lutz.
Together, the cast outweighs the sum of its parts, but the parts are actually quite interesting when looked at in terms of international box-office drawing power, especially in mega markets like China, Korea, Russia, Brazil, and parts of Western Europe. Below, I’ve broken out numbers for some of the individual stars across those markets with a nifty slideshow that covers their last three major titles outside the franchise in these key territories.* The first Expendables film did about $274M worldwide, with $171M from overseas. In an unusual turn of events for a sequel, the franchise’s second film saw its earnings drop in the U.

Sneak Peek more footage from director Reinhard Klooss' motion capture feature "Tarzan 3D", that received a limited release in North America, May 2014:
"... while in a remote part of Africa exploring a mineral cache in a mysterious cave, entrepreneur 'John Greystoke' and his wife 'Alice' are killed in a helicopter crash, leaving their three-year-old 'John Jr.' to fend for himself in the jungle.
"Rescued by 'Kala', a gentle ape, the traumatized child is brought up by a band of mountain gorillas as one of their own, learning the ways of the wild as he grows into a strong and indepdendent young man known as 'Tarzan'.
"Tarzan first encounters another human, 'Jane Porter', when she visits Africa with her naturalist father.
"But the gorilla tribe’s longtime leader dies and is succeeded by a brutal silverback named 'Tublat', who settles an old score by driving Tarzan out of the group.

With a baffling backstory about the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, this new jungle animation does not go with a swing
Here's a muddled and dull new family film about Tarzan, who in keeping with tradition is as clean-shaven and all-over hairless as any male stripper. It's basically an "origin" myth about the king of the apes, although the precise origin of that loincloth is as big a mystery as ever. Walt Disney's ownership of the copyright having expired, the German firm Constantin Films opened its chequebook and cranked out this English-language Disney knock-off: a very moderate motion-capture animation, stripping the tale of any wit and burdening it with a pointless and baffling sci-fi backstory about the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. The writer-director is veteran German producer Reinhard Klooss; Kellan Lutz voices Tarzan and Spencer Locke is Jane. The idea is thatTarzan's jungle is the secret location of the...

While the film world fervently awaits the live-action adaptation of Tarzan, set for a 2016 release, in the meantime comes yet another reimagining of the classic tale, with director Reinhard Klooss marking the fictional creation’s centenary year with an animated offering. While certainly enjoyable, it lacks any true individuality, causing us to sincerely hope that David Yates’ impending endeavour shows a little more ingenuity.
Kellan Lutz, renowned primarily for his performance as Emmett Cullen in the Twilight franchise, voices the eponymous lead, who is left abandoned in the jungle when victim of a helicopter crash as a child, which killed both of his parents. It’s not every day you get to sit down in a gorilla enclosure at a zoo (Bristol Zoo, in this instance) and interview one of Hollywood’s fledging stars. Yet that’s exactly what we had the pleasure of doing, when we sat down with Kellan Lutz to discuss his role in new Tarzan animation.
Lutz, famed for his role in the Twilight franchise, explains why this was a dream role for him, how he went about portraying such a famed cinematic character – and what it is about the Tarzan tale that has allowed for it to touch people ever since its conception over 100 years ago.
Tarzan is released on May 2nd.

Handsome in a dark blue suit but no tie, the voice of the film's title character posed for some playful shots outside the Odeon cinema Point Village before heading in for the festivities.
Speaking about his role on ITV's "Daybreak," the 29-year-old explained,"For me growing up I loved Disney movies so little boys dream come true playing Tarzan as well as Hercules."

Who doesn't love a Hollywood hunk with a heart of gold? Kellan Lutz walked the red carpet at the Ireland premiere of Tarzan Wednesday night (an animated motion-capture version produced in France and Germany), stopping for a moment to pose for a picture with a young fan who was on crutches. The little girl was rocking a fuzzy hot-pink boot on her right foot and a sweet smile, made all the bigger when Lutz walked over. And it was so nice to see the 29-year-old heartthrob, known for showing off his abs in blockbuster films, flashing his cuddly side instead. Not that he should stop taking off his shirt or anything... Fans of The Wolf of Wall Street and Pan Am apologists are undoubtedly excited to hear that we’ll be getting much more Margot Robbie in our lives very soon. The 23-year-old Aussie, now best known for portraying Jordan Belfort’s fun wife, is racking up the roles left and right during Wolf‘s Oscar run after getting just recognition for her fantastic performance. While Robbie is already filming Focus, a “con artist comedy” costarring Will Smith, and starring alongside Michelle Williams in Suite Francaise, she’s got two other films coming down the pipeline that will serve to show off her range of acting chops in a couple different genres: David Yates‘ Tarzan and Craig Zobel‘s Z for Zachariah. Tarzan — no, not that weird CGI German 3D one starring Kellan Lutz, the other one — has sent Robbie to the jungles as their new Jane, opposite Alexander Skarsgard as the titular apeman who may or may...

Kellan Lutz ‘The Legend of Hercules’: New Summit release has 0% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating (photo: Gaia Weiss and shirtless Kellan Lutz in ‘The Legend of Hercules’) Starring Kellan Lutz, best known as the hunky and likable vampire Emmett in the Twilight movies, The Legend of Hercules opens today, January 10, 2014, in North America. That’s the good news for Kellan Lutz fans. Now, the bad news: The Legend of Hercules isn’t about to become the next Spartacus — or even the next Gladiator. “The only thing epic about The Legend of Hercules is what a failure it is,” writes Stephanie Merry in the Washington Post, while Newsday‘s Rafer Guzman’s complains that “this painfully feeble version of the strongman story fails on every level, from Lutz’s wooden acting to the styrofoam special effects.” In fact, out of 35 reviews, the Summit Entertainment / Lionsgate Pictures release has a 0% approval rating...

"Twilight" actor Kellan Lutz sounds pumped to be playing a Greek demi-god in "The Legend of Hercules." Exiled by his stepfather, King Amphitryon (Scott Adkins) and sold into slavery, Hercules must embrace his birthright in order to win back the woman he loves, Hebe (Gaia Weiss), and reclaim the kingdom.

In the epic origin story The Legend Of Hercules, Kellan Lutz stars as the mythical Greek hero – the son of Zeus, a half-god, half-man blessed with extraordinary strength. Recently, Wamg sat down with Lutz in a roundtable discussion about the film, keeping in shape, and yes kids… he does mention Twilight. Check it out below.
Betrayed by his stepfather, the King, and exiled and sold into slavery because of a forbidden love, Hercules must use his formidable powers to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom. Through harrowing battles and gladiator-arena death matches, Hercules embarks on a legendary odyssey to overthrow the King and restore peace to the land.
Are you losing your voice from talking so much?
Kl: No. I did four days – 2 full days of the movie that you guys saw – of Adr, because we’re on horses, leading a fight in the rain, so the sound quality wasn’t good.

Many a year ago, Taylor Kitsch was lauded as the next great male heartthrob. Then came John Carter. Then, Battleship. Now, he’s lucky to have landed a role in Almost Heroes 3D, the next animated feature from DigiArt Productions (which sounds more than a little like an accredited online institute). Kellan Lutz has clearly been studying under Kitsch’s wing- stepping into the spotlight as a somewhat generic megahunk with the Twilight films and Immortals, then plunging immediately downward. The actor may be a part of the next Expendables film, but so is every other male actor in Hollywood; the only two starring roles he’s got lined up now are a couple of low-budget clunkers. Neither Hercules: The Legend Begins nor Tarzan 3D have a whole lot going for them. So let’s start with Hercules, shall we? The film is already in the unfortunate position of going up against Dwayne Johnson‘s 265 pounds of...

Tarzan is back (what, you’ve been waiting for him, right?) in director Reinhard Klooss’ CGI animated movie “Tarzan”. Kellan Lutz, who will be battling Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for the title of best Hercules in 2014, fronts the film as the voice of Tarzan, though from the looks of it — er, the sounds of it — he mostly just grunts and roars. Which makes sense. Isn’t Lutz’s best assets his muscles? You don’t actually get to see those muscles in an animated movie, so it’s probably best to limit his dialogue. Just sayin’. Guy isn’t exactly De Niro, you know? Anyways, take a look at the first trailer for “Tarzan”, not to be confused with the live-action movie that’s been in the works for a few years now. Tarzan and Jane Porter face a mercenary army dispatched by the evil CEO of Greystoke Energies, a...

Kellan Lutz (Twilight) isn’t just the other Hercules (the one that isn’t The Rock), he’s also the new digi-Tarzan. For Tarzan 3D, the actor provided the voice work and mo-cap performance for the title character, who does all the hanging with apes and swinging on vines that you’d expect from a Tarzan story. When we saw [...]...

Last fall, we got an early look at Constantin Films motion-capture animated adaptation of Tarzan 3D, featuring The Twilight Saga star Kellan Lutz as the title man of the jungle and Spencer Locke (Detention) playing Jane. At the time, the animation looked like an old video game, lacking all of the features that make animated movies today look good. Now the full trailer is here, and even though it's been a year since that initial teaser popped up, this film still looks like garbage. The film is already playing in German and Russian cinemas, so it's not going to get better. Don't count on this getting a big Us release. Here's the full trailer for Reinhard Klooss' Tarzan 3D from Addictomovie.com (via ComingSoon): Reinhard Klooss is directing Tarzan 3D starring Kellan Lutz as the classic jungle hero and Spencer Locke as Jane. The first teaser trailer for Constantine Films' 3D motion capture version of "Tarzan" was released just over a year ago, and while it was still a little rough around the edges, so to speak, it presented some morsel of promise for the animation end of this thing.
This new full-length trailer for the pic, however, kind of looks like something a kid might have just thrown together in his basement. Oof.
"Tarzan," which stars "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz as the titular chest-beater in both voice and body movements, finds the jungle boy and his best gal Jane (Spencer Locke) duking it out with some hired guns sent by the meanies who took over his parents' company after they died in a plane crash (yes, the same one that left him to the apes).

Looks like Alexander Skarsgard won't be beating his bare, chiseled chest while romping through the jungle any time soon — unless, of course, "True Blood" takes an unexpected turn for its sixth season.
That sound you hear is women across the world groaning in collective dismay, by the way.
Per Deadline, Warner Bros. is — at least temporarily — pulling the plug on the David Yates-led reboot of "Tarzan," which was set to feature "Zero Dark Thirty" femme Jessica Chastain as the dame Jane. Reportedly, the production halt stems from the studio being uncomfortable with the budget on-hand, but there may be a second lurking matter at issue, too: casting.

Kellan Lutz's latest film, "Java Heat," hits Video On Demand on May 10, and a new trailer for the flick has been unveiled this week. Lutz, who recently nabbed the leading role in "Hercules 3D," did a lot of his own stunt work for the movie. On Friday, he appeared on "Good Morning Texas" in support of the film's upcoming release and talked about his excitement over all the throwback super hero work he's been scoring lately. "I love mythology, and when you're growing up in the mid-west, you just have the literature to read and you fantasize, and we had the animals to dress up, and you feel like Mowgli from 'The Jungle Book' or even Tarzan or Hercules," he said, calling the "Hercules" gig a "dream project." The interviewer asked Lutz whether it's a help or a hindrance to have been associated with the "Twilight Saga,...

As if it wasn’t enough for Twilight veteran Kellan Lutz to score the role of one famously buff character in Tarzan, he’s now aiming for the double by taking on Hercules for director Renny Harlin.Harlin is gearing up Hercules 3D for Nu Image/Millennium, which has been busy developing this take on the Greek demigod. While most of the plot is undercover for now, The Hollywood Reporter has been able to ferret out that it follows a love story between Herc and the mortal princess of Crete, who was inconveniently promised to his older brother. Siblings, eh? When do they ever agree? The script’s by Harlin, Sean Hood, Giulio Steve and Hanna Hoeg, and the Die Hard 2 director is set to shoot in Bulgaria starting next month. Cementing his legacy as the Toby Jones of CGI fantasies, Kellan Lutz has reportedly signed on to star in Hercules 3D—Renny Harlin’s previously acknowledged, inevitable competitor to the Brett Ratner-directed, Dwayne Johnson-starring Hercules: The Thracian Wars. Lutz has previously played the second shirtless fiddle by nesting himself within a motion-captured bodysuit, like a musclebound matryoshka doll, to star in a 3-D version of Tarzan that will similarly compete with Warner Bros.’ own Tarzan movie, because there must be two of everything now. And as Harlin has said before, the distinction between his and Ratner’s take is Harlin ...
