I love movie and television soundtracks. I’ll often use a given soundtrack while I work, letting it fuel my writing. I can’t listen to music with lyrics in them; that interferes with my process. I’ll get themes, characters, even scenes or whole plots from the music. Soundtrack music is in service of the story that the film is trying to tell; it’s a part of the narrative, heightening the emotion that’s being invoked.

I have my own particular favorites. The composers usually have a large body of work but certain key works resonate within me – Jerry Goldsmith’s Chinatown and Patton, James Horner with Field of Dreams, Shaun Davey’s Waking Ned Devine, Elmer Bernstein’s To Kill A Mockingbird (has there ever been a more beautiful and evocative theme?) and, of course, The Magnificent Seven.

The International Film Music Critics Association has revealed nominations for best in movie music from 2014, and prolific composers James Newton Howard ("The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," "Maleficent") and Alexandre Desplat ("Godzilla," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "The Monuments Men") led the way with seven and six nominations respectively. Film score of the year contenders include just two Best Original Score Oscar nominees: "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and Hans Zimmer's "Interstellar." "The Imitation Game" and Jóhann Jóhannsson's "Theory of Everything," however, were both nominated in the drama category. "Maleficent" landed the most nominations for a film with four, while DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon 2" picked up three (each of them another if you count composer of the year honors for Howard and John Powell respectively). Not a lot to say in the pre-amble to this week’s selection of titles. Should probably apologise for the negativity in advance because a lot of the below is dreck this week across any content provider apart from the occasional bright spot and a new Netflix exclusive. There really isn’t anymore praise that I can heap on Alfonso Cuaron’s outer space thrill ride that hasn’t been heaped upon it already. Upon repeat viewing what impresses more and more is the technical marvel that this film represents with Gravity being a massive leap forward in the use of virtual sets as well as animation that looks like real people.

The Expendables 3 is debuting this weekend in 40 territories including Russia, the UK, Mexico and Australia — and features a powerhouse ensemble that includes Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer and Kellan Lutz.

Together, the cast outweighs the sum of its parts, but the parts are actually quite interesting when looked at in terms of international box-office drawing power, especially in mega markets like China, Korea, Russia, Brazil, and parts of Western Europe. Below, I’ve broken out numbers for some of the individual stars across those markets with a nifty slideshow that covers their last three major titles outside the franchise in these key territories.* The first Expendables film did about $274M worldwide, with $171M from overseas. Here's a muddled and dull new family film about Tarzan, who in keeping with tradition is as clean-shaven and all-over hairless as any male stripper. Walt Disney's ownership of the copyright having expired, the German firm Constantin Films opened its chequebook and cranked out this English-language Disney knock-off: a very moderate motion-capture animation, stripping the tale of any wit and burdening it with a pointless and baffling sci-fi backstory about the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. While the film world fervently awaits the live-action adaptation of Tarzan, set for a 2016 release, in the meantime comes yet another reimagining of the classic tale, with director Reinhard Klooss marking the fictional creation’s centenary year with an animated offering. While certainly enjoyable, it lacks any true individuality, causing us to sincerely hope that David Yates’ impending endeavour shows a little more ingenuity.

It’s not every day you get to sit down in a gorilla enclosure at a zoo (Bristol Zoo, in this instance) and interview one of Hollywood’s fledging stars. Yet that’s exactly what we had the pleasure of doing, when we sat down with Kellan Lutz to discuss his role in new Tarzan animation.

Lutz, famed for his role in the Twilight franchise, explains why this was a dream role for him, how he went about portraying such a famed cinematic character – and what it is about the Tarzan tale that has allowed for it to touch people ever since its conception over 100 years ago.

Handsome in a dark blue suit but no tie, the voice of the film's title character posed for some playful shots outside the Odeon cinema Point Village before heading in for the festivities.

New Delhi, Apr.8: Television actor Mohit Raina has reportedly been approached to lend his voice to the Hindi version of adventure film 'Tarzan 3D'.

Raina, who shot to fame with mythological show, 'Devon ka Dev... Mahadev', has apparently asked PVR for a special screening of the movie after he was given the script of the film, PVR Pictures reported.

The movie starring Kellan Lutz and Spencer Locke in the lead also stars, Anton Zetterholm and Jaime Ray Newman and is directed and produced by German film-maker Reinhard Klooss.

New Delhi, March 26: Kellan Lutz tried to amuse his Australian girlfriend by doing Tarzan's famous "chest drumming" during their time-off aboard a luxury yacht in Saint Tropez, it has been revealed.

Last fall, we got an early look at Constantin Films motion-capture animated adaptation of Tarzan 3D, featuring The Twilight Saga star Kellan Lutz as the title man of the jungle and Spencer Locke (Detention) playing Jane. At the time, the animation looked like an old video game, lacking all of the features that make animated movies today look good. Now the full trailer is here, and even though it's been a year since that initial teaser popped up, this film still looks like garbage. The first teaser trailer for Constantine Films' 3D motion capture version of "Tarzan" was released just over a year ago, and while it was still a little rough around the edges, so to speak, it presented some morsel of promise for the animation end of this thing.

This new full-length trailer for the pic, however, kind of looks like something a kid might have just thrown together in his basement. Oof.

Check out the third poster for Reinhard Kloos's Tarzan animated adventure voiced by Kellan Lutz, Spencer Locke, Robert Capron and Jaime Ray Newman. The 3D film also scripted by Kloos, has yet to find a U.S. distributor. In the story Tarzan and Jane Porter (Locke) are up against a mercenary army sent the Greystoke Energies' CEO, a man who, after Tarzan's parents, took over the company. Also in the cast are Brian Bloom, Mark Deklin, Jo Somond, Brian Huskey, Craig Garner, Trevor St. John, Crhis Fries, Andy Warehand, Edd Osmond, Chirstian Serritiello and Rebecca Reaney.

In the blink of an eye The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was in and out of theatres, and honestly we'd be hard pressed to even recall its arrival. Still, it's heading to home video so this will be a good time to catch up.

Dolby crosses 50 titles in Atmos

Dolby has announced five new titles to be mixed in the Atmos digital audio format. They are Álex de la Iglesia’s Witching and Bitching (Las Brujas de Zugarramundi) (Spain), Jorge Dorado’s Mindscape (Spain and Canada), Reinhard Klooss’ Tarzan 3D (Germany), Mr. Go (Korea), and nature documentary Guadalquivir (Spain), which brings the total number of Dolby Atmos titles to 50. That’s just a year after it launched with Brave in June 2012. Also, with yesterday’s news of Odeon and Uci adding 27 Atmos installations across Europe, that brings the total count of Dolby Atmos screens worldwide to more than 200.
