In a small German village, a museum has been erected to honor would-be Hitler assassin and carpenter Georg Elser. But outside the town of Konigsbronn, little is known about this country craftsman who might have changed the course of history. As directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (who made the masterful 2004 film “Downfall”), “13 Minutes” illuminates Elser’s story in a mostly compelling fashion. In November 1939, Elser was arrested on the Swiss border, his pockets full of schematics and suspicious gear. Moments later, a bomb explodes in the Munich Bürgerbräukeller, immediately behind the Führer’s lectern, killing eight people. The film intercuts between the.

Oliver Hirschbiegel’s 2004 drama “Downfall” was the definitive portrait of Adolf Hitler at the end of WWII, examining the dictator during his final days as he ran out of options. It also provided fodder for one of the greatest viral memes of all time — the “Downfall” parody videos, which position fake subtitles over a pivotal scene in which Hitler (Bruno Ganz) lashes out at his staff upon realizing that he’s lost the war. Over the years, Hitler has lashed out over topics ranging from Oasis splitting up to Ben Affleck getting cast as the Batman.
While this wasn’t part of Hirschbiegel’s plan, the video does speak to his skills as a filmmaker, given that the scene is filled with pregnant pauses and sudden bursts of anger that make it the perfect template for so many circumstances.

Shockingly, this awards season there is only one World War II-set movie — Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge — but there will be no shortage of dramas set during the era come 2017. While Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk will certainly gain the most attention, early in the year, two dramas touring the festival circuit will make their way to U.S. theaters and new trailers have arrived for both.
First up, Alone in Berlin, starring Brendan Gleeson, Emma Thompson, and Daniel Brühl will hit theaters in just a few weeks. We said in our review from Berlinale earlier this year, “Director Vincent Perez sets the stage for what should be a compelling study of dissolution and grief, yet is never able to follow through with the skill or tenacity the material requires. 13 Minutes is a WWII film that tells the true story of an assassination attempt on Hitler. There were several attempts to take Hitler out during the war, but this one focuses on a German man named Georg Elser. He built a homemade bomb and planted it a venue that Hitler was supposed to speak at. The event ended early and Hitler left 13 minutes before the bomb exploded. This film explores Elser's life leading up to the assassination attempt and the motive behind his plot to kill Hitler.
The film was directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall), and it looks like a fantastically made film that tell a powerful and intense story. This is the official synopsis:
13 Minutes tells the incredible true story of the man who nearly changed the world - Georg Elser, a carpenter who attempted to carry out a bomb plot against Hitler at a Nazi convention in...

"Someone has to stop this madness." Sony Pictures Classics has debuted the official Us trailer for Oliver Hirschbiegel's film 13 Minutes, about the true story of an German man who tried to kill Hitler by planting a bomb in Munich in 1939. German actor Christian Friedel plays Georg Elser, an intelligent young man who decided to build a bomb from random materials he could find and planted it at a venue Hitler was about to speak at. The event ended early, and Hitler left the building 13 minutes before the bomb went off, escaping narrowly. The film profiles Elser and his time before the war, exploring his motives and desires for this plot. I saw this film way back at the Berlin Film Festival in early 2016, and I thought it was fantastic. I'm sad it has taken two years to get released, but I hope some people give it a chance. It's worth your time.

Oliver Hirschbiegel delivers a confident account of the life of Georg Elser, who made a failed attempt to bomb Adolf Hitler in 1939
Oliver Hirschbiegel is the director who made Downfall (2004), the grippingly claustrophobic account of Hitler’s final days in the bunker – but also the notoriously clunking biopic Diana (2013), starring Naomi Watts. This film puts Hirschbiegel back on surer ground: a workmanlike true-life study of Georg Elser, the carpenter who made a failed attempt on the life of Hitler in Munich in 1939; his bomb went off too late and Elser was captured and finally executed in Dachau in 1945. (He is also the subject of a 1989 movie entitled Seven Minutes, directed by its star, Klaus Maria Brandauer.)

Hirschbiegel on Elser: 'He's the first serious resistance fighter. He has the vision - it's almost clairvoyant really - that if Hitler is not stopped, it will lead to catastrophe' Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel returns to the subject of the Third Reich with his latest film 13 Minutes. Written by Léonie-Claire and Fred Breinersdorfer and starring Christian Friedel, it recounts the astonishing real-life story of Swabian Georg Elser, whose plan to assassinate Hitler in November 1939 failed by the narrowest of margins - the 13 minutes of the movie's title.
While German army officer and would-be Hitler assassin Claus von Stauffenberg's 1944 attempt has long been celebrated, Elser - notably, from much humbler origins - spent many years in the wilderness in terms of recognition. This lack of acknowledgement is something Hirschbiegel brands "a shameful, embarrassing black spot on our history - that's my interpretation".

Oliver Hirschbiegel's new film, 13 Minutes, tells the story of a Swabian carpenter called Georg Elser who, in November 1939, came within moments of killing Adolf Hitler. To Hirschbiegel, Elser is a heroic figure who has been forgotten by history, a resistance fighter who deserves as much credit as Claus von Stauffenberg, the aristocratic German army officer behind a later, much more celebrated, plot to kill Hitler in 1944.

Christian Friedel's Everyman Elser in 13 MinutesThe Berlinale would not be the Berlinale without its annual Nazifilm in competition, and last year’s WWII melodrama, The Monuments Men, was yet another testimony to the genre’s narrative fatigue: The GIs having had already cinematically liberated the Jews, the Gypsys, the Homosexuals, Europe, the World and even the Germans from themselves, are filmed fighting to save one final victim—European Art (bypassing the slightly uncomfortable and paradoxical snag that what they were laboring to save were the artifacts of same European civilization which birthed the eugenics, nationalism, and fascism that were the pillars of Nazi ideology). This year’s Nazi drama, 13 Minutes, was no less wearied. Based on Johann Georg Elser’s failed assassination attempt of Hitler and the German high command in 1939 at the very same Munich beer hall where Hitler’s putsch had failed 16 years earlier, 13 Minutes mythologizes Elser...

"Downfall" director Oliver Hirschbiegel returns to the setting of his greatest career achievement with the WWII set "13 Minutes." Today's ratings bulletin is a mixed bag beginning with an R-rating for Oliver Hirschbiegel's new movie 13 Minutes, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year and will be released by Sony Classics later this year. The pic, also known as Elser, seems to be getting much higher marks than the Downfall director's Hollywood outing, Invasion, way back in 2007 and the all-but-ignored Diana a couple years ago. Next is Legend which gets an R-rating as we would expect as Tom Hardy takes on the dual role of playing London's most notorious gangsters, Reggie and Ron Kray. Two PG-13 ratings of note, one for Masterminds and the other for Suffragette. The first is a comedy, the other is an awards season contender. I've listed the two ensemble casts below... I'm pretty sure you'll be able to match them up appropriately: Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis,...

If only he had 13 more minutes, the world would be an entirely different place. The new film from German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Das Experiment, Downfall, The Invasion), titled 13 Minutes, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this week. It's a solid thriller that tells the true story of carpenter Georg Elser, a resistance fighter who designed a bomb and attempted to kill Hitler in 1939, but was unsuccessful by only 13 minutes. It feels very much like Germany's response to The Imitation Game, highlighting an individual who tried to impact WWII for the better and wasn't recognized by his country for many years. It's also everything that Valkyrie should've been, but wasn't, and explores Georg's life leading up to and after the bombing. I'm not sure why so many critics are out to hate this film, but it's certainly not bad by any means (contrary to what some might be claiming). It's not perfect either,...

Sony Pictures Classics acquired North and Latin American distribution rights to Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Nazi-era drama 13 Minutes early on at the Berlin Film Festival. The story of Georg Elser, who tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1939, has its official screening out of competition today and was met with high praise from the press corps this morning. This is a return to familiar territory for the Oscar-nominated Downfall director after 2013’s savaged English-language biopic Diana.
A compelling portrait of the resistance fighter, 13 Minutes is not the first time Elser’s story has come to the screen, but is a rarity. Klaus Maria Brandauer starred in and directed Seven Minutes in 1989 which focused more on the building of Elser’s poorly-timed bomb. Titled "Elser" in Germany where its main character is better known, and "13 Minutes" in English, after the amount of time by which Georg Elser failed to kill Hitler, Oliver Hirschbiegel's latest film brings him back to Nazi Germany, the scene of his greatest cinematic triumph, "Downfall." And if "13 Minutes" does not achieve that film's level of sclerotic, spluttering compulsion -- as central figures go it's hard to beat "raving aging madman Hitler played by Bruno Ganz," and Elser doesn't quite measure up -- we can at least be thankful that it's very far from the royal fuck-up that was the dire "Diana." "13 Minutes" is an elegant, expensive-looking, respectful history lesson that finds just enough interesting texture in terms of the religious, social, moral, and personal circumstances that led to the creation of this rogue ideologue, to save it from becoming dry. And while the temptation to sanctify Elser as a.

Beta wins My Special Prize for the Best Berlin Lineup of all the International Sales Agents
From the producer of 2013 Golden Bear winner “Child’s Pose” comes “Aferim!” playing in Berlinale Competition. Policeman Costandin, a charismatic mixture of a funny Stalin and a somewhat more pragmatic Don Quixote, and his shy and introverted son ride through the rural countryside In search of a fugitive Gypsy slave. Meeting hundreds of characters, delivering a surprise in every scene, this is an ingenious Western in a very wild East of 19th century Romania directed by Radu Jude (“Everybody in our Family”) and produced by HiFilm’s Ada Solomon, Klas, Endorfilm and Mulberry Development, and stars Teodor Corban (“Child’s Pose”, “Beyond the Hills”), Mihai Comãnoiu and Cuzin Toma.
Forum entry “Zurich," Oliver Hirschbiegel’s "13 Minutes" (Competition - Out of Competition) plus this year’s Sundance Audience Award winner “Umrika” and the new Sky Italia series “1992" kicking off the Berlinale Special Series section make this a banner Berlin for Beta Cinema.
In official selection/out of competition bows Nazi resistance drama "13 Minutes" about failed Hitler assassin Georg Elser. Oliver Hirschbiegel, whose Academy Award nominated “Downfall” is one of the most successful Beta Cinema titles ever with 145 sold territories, presents a stunning, emotional portrait of the resistance fighter and his attack on the Munich Bürgerbräukeller on November 8th 1939. Georg Elser was a man who could have changed world history and saved millions of human lives, but his bomb, built to tear Adolf Hitler apart, exploded 13 minutes late. Produced by Lucky Bird’s Oliver Schündler and Boris Ausserer, who just recently won the Bavarian Film Award for "13 Minutes", and written by Fred Breinersdorfer (“Sophie Scholl”), the feature stars Christian Friedel (“The White Ribbon”), Katharina Schüttler (“Generation of War” ) and Burghart Klaussner (“The White Ribbon”).
Dutch filmmaker Sacha Polak, who received the prestigious Fipresci-award at the 2012 Berlinale for Hemel, presents with "Zurich" her second feature film, a road movie starring famous Dutch singer and performance artist Wende Snijders. "Zurich" (Viking Film/Rohfilm/Private View/Nrt/Zdf/arte) revolves around Nina, who is wandering along Europe’s motorways in a desperate attempt to leave the past behind. Slowly it becomes clear that Nina’s drive to hang around in the truckers’ scene is a result of the pain caused by the ultimate betrayal that has befallen her. Sacha Polak developed the script by author Helena van der Meulen during last year’s Berlinale Residency program.
Kicking off the Berlinale Special Series, designated to promote outstanding international TV-series, is the political thriller "1992" from Sky Italia ("Gomorrah"), La 7 and Wildside. Over 20 years ago, on February 17th 1992, the first arrest within the so-called Mani Pulite (Clean Hands) maxi-investigation was made in Italy. It was the symbolic start of a revolution. "1992" revolves around six ordinary people whose lives are intertwined with the country's political, civil and social earthquake. The 10xone hour series stars Stefano Accorsi (idea), Guido Caprino and Miriam Leone; director is Giuseppe Gagliardi.
Celebrating its Berlin Market Premiere is Prashant Nair’s Indian drama "Umrika," which just recently received the Audience Award at Sundance, starring world-renowned, up-and-coming young actors Suraj Sharma ("Life of Pi") and Tony Revolori ("The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Dope"). "Umrika" (Hindi for America) is about a small village in India that is invigorated when one of their own travels to America, sharing his adventures and inspiring hope through letters home. But when the letters mysteriously stop coming, his brother sets out on a journey to find him.
Also premiering at the market is the fourth adventure of "The Famous Five" (Sam Film/Constantin), in which Enid Blyton’s teenager gang venture thousands of miles and thousands of years back in time to solve yet another nail-biting mystery. Prolific maverick filmmaker Detlev Buck ("Hands off Mississippi") presents as international market premiere "Bibi & Tina 2," an inventive live-action adaptation of the teen-adventure and romance in the beloved “Bibi & Tina” universe.
Amongst the upcoming titles, "Colonia" is heading the slate, starring Emma Watson in her first lead role since "Harry Potter" alongside Daniel Brühl ("Rush") as her abducted boyfriend and opposite a very sinister Mikael Nykvist ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"). "Ghosthunters: On Icy Trails" marks another English-language presales highlight for the Efm.
Chances are that you’ve heard of German director Oliver Hirschbiegel from one of two places: either from his remarkable (and horribly depressing) story of Hitler’s last days in the film Downfall, or his ill-conceived and lambasted biopic Diana. Departing once more from his foray into the British Royal Family, Hirschbiegel has now set his sights on returning to World War II, as he plans to direct the film Georg Elser, a true story about Adolf Hitler’s would-be assassin.
Georg Elser’s story is not a happy one. He was a resistance fighter who planned to kill Hitler on November 8, 1939, during a speech the Nazi leader was giving for the anniversary of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch. Elser misjudged his timing, however, and the bomb placed in the lectern ended up going off a full thirteen minutes after Hitler had left, instead killing eight other people. Elser was captured,...

Oliver Hirschbiegel has signed up for a biopic of Nazi resistance fighter Georg Elser.
The Downfall director will tell the little-known story of the German carpenter.
Elser organised a complex attempt to assassinate Hitler in 1939.
He was held in a concentration camp and executed weeks before the end of the war in Europe.
Christian Friedel (The White Ribbon) will play Elser, with Katharina Schüttler (Generation War) as his girlfriend Elsa and Burghart Klaussner (The White Ribbon) as Arthur Nebe, the head of the Criminal Police of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt.
Hirschbiegel's 2004 Downfall - which told the story of the last days of Hitler's life - was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
The director's most recent feature was the poorly received biopic Diana.
Georg Elser began shooting in Munich this week.

It has been a decade since filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel arrived with "Downfall," with the film meme-generating, critically acclaimed film, instantly putting him on the map. But he's struggled to maintain that success. "The Invasion" saw the director and studio at odds, "Five Minutes In Heaven" was an intimate thriller that didn't catch on, while last year's "Diana" was simply a disaster. So he's returning to WWII for another tale about Hitler. Hirschbiegel is now in production on "George Elser," following the man "from his early years in the Swabian Alps—when National Socialism arrived in his hometown—to his last days at the Dachau concentration camp, where he was killed shortly before the end of the war at the command of the one whom he himself wanted to kill, Hitler." And if there's one reason to be excited for this, it's that Christian Friedel, the lead in Michael Haneke's excellent "The White Ribbon,...

Oliver Hirschbiegel, the man that brought us the Oscar-nominated Downfall back in 2004, is prepared to revisit Nazi Germany for another epic tale. This time he'll tell the story of Georg Elser, a resistance fighter that made an attempt to kill Adolf Hitler.
The film will follow Elser from his early years in the Swabian Alps - when National Socialism arrived in his hometown - to his last days at the Dachau concentration camp, where he was killed shortly before the end of the war at the command of the one whom he himself wanted to kill, Hitler.

Filming has all ready begun for Georg Elser, which will see Hirschbiegel back in the genre where he found great success. Downfall earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His last film, Diana, didn't fare so well. Hopefully this will be a return to form for the director.

Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel is returning to familiar territory with Nazi-era drama Georg Elser.
