Producer Mark Patterson said that this film was "my first foray into China and the first official Australia-China co-production to be produced between the two countries. A huge adventure, often challenging but a big learning curve on international co-productions, above average Australian budget and of course complex VFX. I look forward to going back with a far better understanding of how to work in China."
The pearl dragon featured in the film was created by Adelaide visual effects house Rising Sun Pictures.
When opened in China the movie had a massive wide across 3500 screens.
Fourth childrens and family feature film starring an animal or animals directed by director Mario Andreacchio. The first was 'Napoleon' (1995), the second was 'The Real Macaw' (1998), and the third was 'Elephant Tales' (2006).
Sam Neill was cast in the lead adult male role playing archaeologist Dr. Chris Chase in this dragon-featuring picture after having played a paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's 'Jurassic Park' (1993) (and returning in 'Jurassic Park III' (2001)) which featured dinosaurs. Dragons are often considered to be related to dinosaurs because of their reptilian natures. Neill's characters in both were doctors of science.
