While The Equalizer 2’s ending wraps up nicely, the symbolism of the sequel’s climax is much deeper than it appears. The Equalizer was a 2014 action thriller that saw Denzel Washington play Robert McCall, a lethally dangerous marine turned Dia officer. In the tense movie, Washington’s character reluctantly returns to action to save a teenager from the Russian mob. In The Equalizer 2, Robert and his former colleague, Dave York, investigate the murder of another co-worker, Susan Plummer, who was killed by unseen assailants during what looked like a robbery in Brussels.
Robert and York looked into this killing, but it didn’t take long for Washington’s hardened antihero to uncover the shocking truth leading up to The Equalizer 2's ending. Meanwhile, a troubled teenage artist named Miles offered to paint a mural on Robert’s apartment building. These two plots converged in The Equalizer 2’s closing scenes,...

With The Equalizer 2 switching its streaming home on Christmas Day, it is a good time to look at where to watch every The Equalizer movie. Denzel Washington launched his first-ever franchise in 2014 with the action movie directed by Antoine Fuqua, a reboot of the 1980s series. Washington stars as Robert McCall, a former marine and intelligence officer who escaped this walk of life but is brought back into a dangerous world filled with enemies in the name of doing what is right.

We’ve all heard that money can’t buy happiness, but then you look at Denzel Washington and think, well, it can definitely buy a whole lot of action! As Robert McCall in The Equalizer series, the actor doesn’t just walk into a room—he owns it.
But McCall isn’t your typical action hero. Oh no, this guy is the one you want by your side when the chips are down. Not because he’s just ‘good at fighting’, but because his sense of right and wrong is so razor-sharp, it could cut through steel.

Now, we’re not here to just throw around fancy adjectives. You know, the usual ‘fearless’ or ‘unstoppable’—we’ve heard that one a thousand times. Well, McCall’s character isn’t just taking names and delivering roundhouse kicks. He’s making people pay for their sins,...

Denzel Washington is one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood right now, and luckily several of his movies are currently streaming on Netflix. Washington first gained attention on the TV series St. Elsewhere in the 1980s, and quickly began to grow in popularity with roles in films such as A Soldier's Story and Power. In 1990, Washington's role in Glory earned him his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, further solidifying his stardom. Since then, Denzel Washington has been nominated seven times for Best Actor, and he has appeared in some of the best movies of the 21st century.
Most recently, Denzel Washington starred as Macrinus in Gladiator II, creating a perfect reminder to revisit some of his past performances. Along with the dramatic prowess Washington displayed as Macrinus, Netflix also currently has several movies streaming which include Denzel Washington's name as a producer rather than actor, proving that his...

After months of uncertainty, I couldn't be happier about Denzel Washington's recent The Equalizer update, not only because it means more movies for fans of the franchise, but also, more movies for Washington. Since 2014, Washington has starred as the skilled former Marine, Robert McCall, in The Equalizer movies. For three films now, Washington has proven that he still has what it takes to be an action hero. However, after the peaceful ending of 2023's The Equalizer 3, the fate of the franchise became unclear. With McCall happily retired in the Italian countryside, many assumed it would end there.
Fortunately, Washington recently confirmed that McCall's story is not ending there. In an interview with Esquire, Washington revealed two more Equalizer movies are currently in development. Of the upcoming films, Washington said, "Ive come to realize that the Equalizer films are for me, too, because theyre for the people. They want...

Denzel Washington has confirmed he will be making more sequels in ‘The Equalizer’ franchise. The 69-year-old actor has starred in the action series from its 2014 debut until the most-recent third entry last year, and now Washington has revealed he will be returning as the grizzled Robert McCall in two more movies.Speaking with Esquire magazine, he said: “I told them I would do another ‘Equalizer’, and we’re doing four and five. More people are happy about that — people love those daggone [God damn] Equalizers.”The ‘Gladiator II’ star added the series was as much for audiences as it was for him, because he loved getting the chance to be an action hero.He added: “But I’ve come to realise that the ‘Equalizer’ films are for me, too, because they’re for the people. According to Denzel Washington, two more Equalizer movies are currently in the works. Washington first played former government assassin Robert McCall in 2014, returning for a sequel in 2018 and a third film in 2023. The Equalizer 3 seemed to bring McCall's story to a close, ending with Washington's character happily retired from a life of violence in Italy, but there have been rumblings about a potential The Equalizer 4, with franchise director Antoine Fuqua expressing interest in continuing if Washington was willing to return.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Washington shares a surprising new update on the franchise, revealing that The Equalizer 4 and The Equalizer 5 are both in development. Though the actor doesn't provide a development or production timeline regarding the next two installments, he does break down his thought process regarding his return as McCall, explaining why the character and the films resonate with audiences. Check out Washington's comment below:...

On last week's Empire podcast, Denzel Washington confirmed that reports of his premature retirement were greatly exaggerated. Also on last week's Empire podcast, the Gladiator II star was asked by our very own Chris Hewitt whether he'd ever be tempted to revisit the character of Robert McCall — aka The Equalizer — in future Equalizer movies: Washington neither confirmed nor denied, instead opting for a five-second stare into the interviewer's soul. Now, in a remarkable turn of events, the senior Washington has made an about-face, confirming to Esquire in an interview that not only could he be tempted to play McCall again, but he will — twice!
While the last brace of movies in the Equalizer trilogy swept up a cool near-$400 million at the box office, the kind of financial performance that would ordinarily make further sequels a virtual guarantee, both Washington and director Antoine Fuqua let The Equalizer 3 play out...

Robert McCall is coming back for even more blood. That's right! Denzel Washington has confirmed that he is returning as the stone-cold killer of those who deserve killing after starring in a trilogy of "The Equalizer" movies for Sony Pictures and director Antoine Fuqua. The interesting bit, though, is that the Oscar-winning actor says that they are making not one, but two more "Equalizer movies.
Washington was recently the subject of a profile piece by Esquire in honor of the release of "Gladiator II," which features the beloved actor in a key role as Macrinus. During the conversation, he revealed that Sony Pictures has gotten him to agree to both "The Equalizer 4" and "The Equalizer 5," apparently. While there wasn't a ton of information given, here's what the actor had to say about it:

When The Equalizer 3 was released last year, it was promoted as being the final chapter in the film franchise – even though director Antoine Fuqua let it be known that he was interested in going back and telling the origin story of Robert McCall, the ex-Marine and Dia officer played by Denzel Washington in the trilogy. There’s no word on whether or not one them will actually end up being an origin story, but Washington has now revealed that he has agreed to come back for both The Equalizer 4 and The Equalizer 5!
Washington dropped the news during an interview with Esquire, saying, “I told them I would do another Equalizer, and we’re doing four and five. Denzel Washington's talk of retirement may have just permanently ruled out The Equalizer 4. It's shocking to think that before the second entry of The Equalizer movie franchise, Washington had never appeared in a sequel. Of course, it helps that the concept loaned itself to other standalone stories, where Denzel's vigilante McCall rights the wrongs that the law can't (or won't). The Equalizer 3's ending saw McCall retire to a quiet little Italian town, seemingly leaving his equalizing days behind for good.
Regardless of the film wrapping up McCall's story and giving the character a shot to live in peace, there was still hope for a potential Equalizer 4. The character is still alive, and so long as a good concept is found, there's no reason to think the series couldn't run for another sequel or two. Ultimately, it feels there is a lack of desire on Washington's part for more,...

Denzel Washington delivers an incredible monologue to The Equalizer's main villain, and it's one where the subtext is pretty clear. Denzel didn't have much luck with action movies before 2004's Man on Fire, with this Tony Scott thriller casting him as a bodyguard on a relentless quest for revenge. Other notable Denzel Washington action movies include Unstoppable and The Book of Eli. Denzel even found himself an action franchise with The Equalizer movies.
This trilogy was based on the classic TV series of the same name, with Washington's McCall being a retired Dia operative who unretires to "equalize" injustice wherever he finds it. It's a part that suits it's leading man perfectly, with McCall being an honorable man who is skilled at both eloquent speeches and kicking ass. Very few actors in the industry can even dream of what Daniel Day-Lewis achieved in his career. The actor, often considered one of the greatest in the industry, has made a huge name for his detailed research behind every role. However, even after having 3 Oscars and numerous hits, his net worth is lower than most of his contemporaries including Denzel Washington.

Although Denzel Washington is only 2 years older than Daniel Day-Lewis, the latter’s net worth is not even close to the Equalizer star. Interestingly, Day-Lewis, even after having such a low net worth, did not need work for 7 years before finally announcing his comeback in 2024.

Denzel Washington's impressive Hollywood resume is hard to top, but joining Fast & Furious would make him a part of one of the biggest blockbuster franchises around, and he already has the perfect role. With decades worth of acting experience and two Oscars to his name, Washington is easily one of the biggest actors around. After starring in The Equalizer 3 in 2023, the actor will appear in the long-awaited Gladiator II alongside numerous other projects, proving he is still a cinematic draw. However, Washington has lost out on some big roles, which he shouldn't repeat with F&f.

Denzel Washington has had many prolific roles over his long and illustrious film career. Still, the actor has also had many parts that he either missed out on out of his own volition or because the casting producers turned him down. Of course, that has not slowed him down at all, as seen in his expansive filmography and numerous award wins. Few actors are on the same level as Washington, which essentially allows him to handpick and create the projects he wants to be a part of. After starring in The Equalizer 3 in 2023, Washington will star as Macrinus in Ridley Scott's highly anticipated Gladiator II.

In recent years, Labor Day weekend’s reputation as a box office dead zone has been upended by strong showings from films like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “The Equalizer 3.” Unfortunately, for 2024, standard perception prevails with a predictably lackluster showing.

The latest update on The Equalizer 4 essentially confirms Denzel Washington will not return as Robert McCall after The Equalizer 3. The third installment in the action franchise was promoted as being the final time audiences would see Washington and director Antoine Fuqua work together in this series. However, the movie's critical acclaim and box office success has once again prompted speculation that the franchise could continue. Discussions about how The Equalizer 4 could happen with Washington returning to the lead role have lingered, and Fuqua's update on the movie puts the star in a powerful position.
Even before any details like The Equalizer 4's story could be sorted, Fuqua addressed the possibility of the sequel happening while doing press for The Equalizer 3. The director reiterated the stance that The Equalizer 3 was envisioned as the end of the franchise but also confirmed he'd be willing to make another if Denzel was on board.

In July, Lionsgate executives gathered for a routine greenlight meeting. On the agenda, however, was not a typical project. The studio was looking at Rush Hour 4, the long-talked-about next installment in the action comedy franchise. In different times, it might seem like an attractive idea for Lionsgate — which has an interest in building franchises to complement its John Wick series — or any studio looking to capitalize on audience nostalgia with well-known IP.

Mark Wahlberg is open to starring in a Shooter sequel under specific conditions, potentially revitalizing the franchise. Antoine Fuqua's return as director for Shooter 2 could make it his new main action franchise after Equalizer. Despite past performance, Shooter 2 has potential for box office success with Wahlberg's star power and Fuqua's track record.
Mark Wahlberg has suggested that Shooter sequel could happen, and it would replace one of Denzel Washington's franchises if his conditions are met. It's been 17 years since Wahlberg starred as Bob Lee Swagger in Antoine Fuqua's Shooter. The action movie had a mixed reception earning 48% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 80% from audiences while grossing $95 million at the box office off a $61 million budget. That performance kept any chance of Shooter 2 happening right away much lower, but Shooter's popularity on streaming and cable has potentially changed the future.

The Equalizer TV spinoff has a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than Denzel Washington's movie series. Queen Latifah's Robyn McCall offers a fresh and lighter take on the franchise's premise. The TV show and movies are not connected, with different tones and universes.
As surprising as it may sound, The Equalizers TV show spinoff outdid Denzel Washingtons movie series in one notable way. The Equalizer franchise dates back to the 80s when co-creator Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheims original spy TV series first premiered. The Equalizer ran from 1985 and 1989, becoming a popular cult classic in the years after its cancelation. The Equalizer focused on Edward Woodwards title character, a former spy whose dark past and lethal skills allowed him to act as a hero for hire. The Equalizer was rebooted as a Denzel Washington movie in 2014.
Antoine Fuquas The Equalizer was a huge hit that soon spawned a sequel.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" is such a dizzying whirlwind of meta references, Marvel Studios Easter eggs, and shocking cameos that you really do need to see the film more than once to, in Pokémon parlance, catch 'em all. Just take a look at your social media feed. If you follow a lot of full-on comic book nerds, you know folks are still sifting through the film's unceasing chaos for every last morsel of minutia.
When it comes to the Fox character cameos, specifically those that don't merit the ultra-heroic slow-motion entrances given to Gambit, Elektra and X-23, you might be left wondering if they were played by the actual actors who originated the roles. The action flashes by with such relentless fury that you don't always get a telling close-up.

Ang Lee, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) Ang Lee
Ang Lee was pulling his hair out. He was in preproduction in China on his ambitious martial arts movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon when a silent investor pulled out. “It was the toughest movie I’d ever tried to make,” recalls Lee, who thought it was all over. But Columbia came to the rescue, thanks to a new initiative to assist local-language filmmaking in foreign markets. Gareth Wigan, a widely respected Sony exec, became involved, as did Barbara Robinson, who lived in Hong Kong and headed up Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia, and was asked to meet with Lee in Taiwan. A coalition came together, including Columbia, China Film Co-Production Corp., Good Machine International, Edko Films and Zoom Hunt Productions. A cowboy and historian criticizes The Magnificent Seven remake for its depiction of its only Asian character, which plays into historical stereotypes. The 2016 remake also features the trope of townspeople being rallied to fight as a small army, which isn't historically accurate. 2016's The Magnificent Seven, which stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, earned mixed reviews and was a box office disappointment.
Old West historian Michael Grauer analyzes scenes from 2016's The Magnificent Seven remake, revealing that the film lacks accuracy in many areas. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the Western film serves as a remake of John Sturges' 1960 film of the same name, which is itself an Americanized remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai from 1954. Fuqua's The Magnificent Seven stars Denzel Washington as Chisolm, the leader of the titular seven, with Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D'Onofrio also starring.

The Equalizer franchise, led by Denzel Washington, has seen success on Netflix, but a fourth installment is unlikely to happen. Denzel Washington's portrayal of Robert McCall has defined the role, as evident by the franchise's enduring popularity and critical acclaim. Despite The Equalizer 3's success, Washington has stated that he will not return for a fourth movie, leaving fans disappointed.
Denzel Washington's 2014 action-thriller The Equalizer has hit Netflix and immediately shot into the Top 10, but its newfound success just underscores one disappointing reality for the franchise. Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua first teamed up for The Equalizer in 2014. The original movie made $192 million on just a $55 million budget, becoming a big hit and earning solid reviews for its stylish action and the powerful teamwork of Fuqua and Washington. Since then, The Equalizer trilogy, now streaming, has only gotten stronger.

The Equalizer, a hit Netflix movie, ranked 8th with 3.5 million views for the week of July 1-7. The original Equalizer film received praise for stylish violence and Denzel Washington's performance. The Equalizer 3, a global hit on Netflix, features more stylish action but is held back by a formulaic story.
The Equalizer becomes a global hit on Netflix a decade after its release. Based on the 1980s TV series of the same title, the 2014 action thriller was directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Richard Wenk, following a former Marine and black ops operative who reluctantly comes out of retirement to protect a teenage trafficking victim from members of the Russian mafia. Denzel Washington leads The Equalizer cast as Robert McCall alongside Marton Csokas, Chlo Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman, and Melissa Leo.

Denzel Washington seeks a new franchise to replace The Equalizer. Upcoming projects like Gladiator II, Hannibal the Conqueror, and High and Low may not replace The Equalizer. Denzel Washington could join the MCU, Fast & Furious, or other major franchises.
Denzel Washington lost his biggest franchise last year, but he's failed to replace it, and I'm curious to see how he will. Denzel spent most of his career resisting franchises and sequels, a move that allowed him to consistently make Oscar-caliber films and standalone genre films. Although some of his movies had sequel or prequel opportunities, it wasn't until The Equalizer that he found his first franchise. His time making the three The Equalizer movies led to great success, as myself and others contributed to it becoming a $573 million hit series.
Denzel's Equalizer movies might not be among the best action movies ever made, but they were consistently entertaining and successful.

M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan made her feature directorial debut with a thriller called The Watchers, which received a June 7th theatrical release, courtesy of Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema. (You can read our review Here and watch our interviews with the director and cast members Here.) The movie did not enjoy the sort of box office success many of the elder Shyamalan’s films have, drawing in just over $25 million worldwide so far. But maybe it will reach a wider audience with its digital release, which is just one week away. Media Play News reports that on June 28th, three weeks after it reached theatres, The Watchers will be available to watch in the comfort of your own home. Dakota Fanning is only 30 years old, but she's been acting professionally for 24 of them. A child actor who fortunately avoided the trap of the teen idol curse, Fanning successfully transitioned into more mature roles like Squeaky Fromme in Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," Emma Collins in "The Equalizer 3," and as Marge Sherwood on "Ripley." Now, Fanning is starring in Ishana Shyamalan's feature directorial debut, "The Watchers," a dark fairytale about an artist named Mina who gets stranded in the woods and finds sanctuary with three strangers as they are all watched by mysterious, unseen creatures at night.
Fanning plays Mina, a messy, complicated, driven character that is a bit outside of the wheelhouse of what general audiences may be used to seeing her portray. The success of "The Watchers" hinges on whether or not the audience can identify with and root for Mina's survival.

Denzel Washington's upcoming remake with Spike Lee may face box office challenges due to his past remakes underperforming. The star's history with remakes, such as The Manchurian Candidate and The Magnificent Seven, shows mixed results financially. However, with Spike Lee's successful track record in crime thrillers, High and Low could break this trend and be a hit for Washington.
Although Denzel Washingtons next Spike Lee collaboration High and Low sounds exciting, the movie will return to a trend that has never been good news for the stars box office prospects. Although Denzel Washington is one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation, the star has weathered his fair share of flops. 1998s supernatural thriller Fallen and 1995s noir mystery Devil In A Blue Dress both failed to earn back their budgets at the box office despite becoming cult classics in the years after their respective releases. Sony Pictures Entertainment has seen operating income fall nearly 10% for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024.
The company’s operating income was $808M in dollar terms compared with $894M for the comparable period a year before, which was down 9.6%. Revenues crept up to $10.31B from $10.14B for Fy.
Sony, which is headquartered in Japan, said the Hollywood strikes had impacted its Pictures segment, which comprises TV production, motion pictures and media networks (including streaming).
Whereas in 2023 Sony had suffered from a lack of new theatrical product, this year the increased number and growth at streamer Crunchyroll helped to offset a decrease in series delivered due to the labor action and lower catalog licensing of motion pictures.
On the motion pictures side, full-year revenues were $3.74B, up slightly on the previous year, but TV fell from nearly $4B to just over $3.8B. However, media networks grew from $2.69B to $2.72B.

Antoine Fuqua is a worker. Not only has he released two feature films in the past two years — Emancipation and The Equalizer 3 — but the director has also been directing and producing some big television projects as well. He helmed episodes of Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers and The Terminal List as well as executive producing Jeremy Renner’s hit show, Mayor of Kingstown. He is also well into the production of a colossal undertaking of capturing the dizzyingly epic and tragic life of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, in the biopic Michael. Now Deadline reports that Fuqua is developing a feature adaptation to the YA novel, Sky’s End, from New York Times bestseller debut author Marc J. Gregson.
The novel is a new release that was published this year by Peachtree Teen. According to Deadline, “The book watches as exiled teenager Conrad enters the...

McCall finds peace in a seaside village after facing mafia threats in The Equalizer 3. A subplot involves aiding CIA agent Emma Collins in exposing terrorists and drug shipments. Despite a dark opening massacre, McCall ultimately chooses to retire and stay in the village.
Warning: Major spoilers for The Equalizer 3 below!
The Equalizer 3's ending closed on an interesting note for Denzel Washington's McCall, which appears to be the final chapter for his take on the character. The third Equalizer opens with former Dia officer Robert McCall being wounded after wiping out a Sicilian mob base. He's soon taken in by the locals at a seaside village called Altamonte, who come to treat him as one of their own while he recovers. Unfortunately, the village locals are being threatened by mafia outfit The Camorra; after they push the violence too far, McCall is forced to push back with equal effect.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been embroiled in a bitter rivalry in the music industry for many years, during which both musicians have been critical of each other.
