The Equalizer becomes a global hit on Netflix a decade after its release. Based on the 1980s TV series of the same title, the 2014 action thriller was directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Richard Wenk, following a former Marine and black ops operative who reluctantly comes out of retirement to protect a teenage trafficking victim from members of the Russian mafia. Denzel Washington leads The Equalizer cast as Robert McCall alongside Marton Csokas, Chlo Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman, and Melissa Leo.

Now, a decade after its release, Washington's action thriller has become a global hit on Netflix.

Denzel Washington lost his biggest franchise last year, but he's failed to replace it, and I'm curious to see how he will. Denzel spent most of his career resisting franchises and sequels, a move that allowed him to consistently make Oscar-caliber films and standalone genre films. Although some of his movies had sequel or prequel opportunities, it wasn't until The Equalizer that he found his first franchise. His time making the three The Equalizer movies led to great success, as myself and others contributed to it becoming a $573 million hit series.

Denzel's Equalizer movies might not be among the best action movies ever made, but they were consistently entertaining and successful.

M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan made her feature directorial debut with a thriller called The Watchers, which received a June 7th theatrical release, courtesy of Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema. The movie did not enjoy the sort of box office success many of the elder Shyamalan’s films have, drawing in just over $25 million worldwide so far. But maybe it will reach a wider audience with its digital release, which is just one week away. Media Play News reports that on June 28th, three weeks after it reached theatres, The Watchers will be available to watch in the comfort of your own home. The 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release will follow on August 27th.

Rolling off its acquisition of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” Italy’s leading independent distributor Eagle Pictures has scooped Italian remake rights to French smash hit “A Little Something Extra,” along with a raft of high-profile projects shopped at the Cannes Film Market.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has seen operating income fall nearly 10% for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024.

The company’s operating income was $808M in dollar terms compared with $894M for the comparable period a year before, which was down 9.6%. Revenues crept up to $10.31B from $10.14B for Fy.

Sony, which is headquartered in Japan, said the Hollywood strikes had impacted its Pictures segment, which comprises TV production, motion pictures and media networks (including streaming).

Whereas in 2023 Sony had suffered from a lack of new theatrical product, this year the increased number and growth at streamer Crunchyroll helped to offset a decrease in series delivered due to the labor action and lower catalog licensing of motion pictures.

On the motion pictures side, full-year revenues were $3.74B, up slightly on the previous year, but TV fell from nearly $4B to just over $3.8B. However, media networks grew from $2.69B to $2.72B.

McCall finds peace in a seaside village after facing mafia threats in The Equalizer 3. A subplot involves aiding CIA agent Emma Collins in exposing terrorists and drug shipments. Despite a dark opening massacre, McCall ultimately chooses to retire and stay in the village.

The Equalizer 3's ending closed on an interesting note for Denzel Washington's McCall, which appears to be the final chapter for his take on the character. The third Equalizer opens with former Dia officer Robert McCall being wounded after wiping out a Sicilian mob base. He's soon taken in by the locals at a seaside village called Altamonte, who come to treat him as one of their own while he recovers. Unfortunately, the village locals are being threatened by mafia outfit The Camorra; after they push the violence too far, McCall is forced to push back with equal effect.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been embroiled in a bitter rivalry in the music industry for many years, during which both musicians have been critical of each other.
