In the golden age of television, the New York Television Festival is quickly becoming the place to find the next crown jewel. Now in its 12th year, the festival continues to grow each year both in scope and prestige, boasting a record number of submissions, artists, and industry participation.

“It’s taken us a couple of years to get to this point, but we’re hitting our stride at a time where there is great creativity in TV and digital,” said Nytvf Founder and Executive Director Terence Gray, surveying the room bustling with pitch meetings on plush couches. “It’s fun, you see these incredibly talented people that are being given a shot to sit down with agents and managers and executives.”

Ghost stories based on urban legend or rural folklore rarely transfer well to film. Oddly enough it seems that there is a more powerful delivery in the written or spoken word without the visuals. It’s refreshing when someone gets it right. Set against the backdrop of picturesque rural Kentucky, “Last Kind Words” works at spinning a tale of the sins of the past coming back to haunt the next generation.

A teenager named Eli and his parents move to an isolated farm to take on laborer jobs. His family life is a dysfunctional cocktail of alcoholism and rage on his father’s part, and complacency and submission on his mother’s.

Image Entertainment always gives independent filmmakers an outlet to get their projects out to the masses. Many of these movies fall into the extremely competitive genre of horror and suffer from collapsing into the realm of cliché. Last Kind Words is one of the rare exceptions to this unfortunate trend.

17-year-old Eli (Spencer Daniels) and his family move to the Kentucky backwoods after the father (Clay Wilcox) loses his job. He decides to work on the secluded farm of a childhood friend and recluse (Brad Dourif). Upon exploring the woods near his new home, he meets a girl named Amanda (Alexia Fast) and feels an instant connection to her. His journeys also expose him to a dark secret the dead want restitution for from beyond the grave.

It's always a treat when you put in a movie expecting nothing more than a one-dimensional horror yarn but you get so much more.

Image Entertainment will be giving us some 'Last Kind Words' when it releases the Kevin Barker mystery horror flick onto DVD and VOD on 21 May across the Us. The movie revolves around Eli, played by Spencer Daniels, who moves to a secluded rural farm and learns that the surrounding woods have flesh-crawling stories to tell. Barker helms from his own screenplay based on a story penned by Amy Riherd Miller. 'Last Kind Words' stars Daniels along with 'The Secret Circle' and 'Jack Reacher' star Alexia Fast (below). New York City writer/director Kevin Barker’s Last Kind Words – which gets its first hometown screening June 8 and 10 as part of the Brooklyn Film Festival – is a supernatural thriller with a Southern Gothic setting, starring Deadwood’s Brad Dourif, Spencer Daniels (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), and Sarah Steele (Spanglish). Barker has a parallel career as a musician, having worked with Devendra Banhart, Antony & The Johnsons, and Joanna Newsom, in addition to recording his own music. Ghosts, violence, and murky atmosphere abound in the multi-talented Brooklynite’s film, in which music unsurprisingly plays a key role.

The East Gable Productions has announced the New York City premiere of director Kevin Barker's Last Kind Words, a Southern Gothic, coming-of-age horror feature starring Brad Dourif, on Friday, June 8th, at the Brooklyn Film Festival.

The film was shot on a breathtaking 600-acre Kentucky farm that's been in the same family since the day Sherman marched on Atlanta. The creepy 19th century buildings, untouched forests, and neglected farm machinery form the backdrop for a timeless story of long forgotten love, long remembered murder, and the ghosts of a landscape that never forgets.

Synopsis:

17-year-old Eli (Spencer Daniels) moves with his family to the isolated farm of reclusive Waylon (Brad Dourif), a man whose dark past threatens to overtake him. Eli’s family works to restore the farm’s desolate fields, while he becomes fascinated with its eerie forests. Eli also has what seem to be typical teenager problems.

The folks over at Red Headed Revolution Pictures have released a teaser trailer for their bloody campfire flick called The Lashman.
