Two of Griselda’s best connected on “Rabies,” a track from Boldy James and Harry Fraud’s aptly named new album The Bricktionary. Both artists are recognized as skilled scribes of R-rated drug epics through song, and their latest collaboration doesn’t disappoint. Harry Fraud laced the two with a soaring guitar-based loop, which they both took off on.

Boldy starts off the track proclaiming, “Holy Christ and Jesus, Latter Day Saints, I caught a half a brickie,” a line that probably won’t be recited at any Catholic Church holiday festivities.

The Marrakech Film Festival’s sixth Atlas Workshops kicks off today under the fresh curation of former indie film sales agent and publicist Hédi Zardi.

Running November 27 to 30 in a rambling riad on the outskirts of Marrakech, the project and talent incubator is showcasing 25 projects hailing from Mena and Africa, 16 in development and another nine in production or post-production.

Zardi is best known on the market and festival circuit as the former co-founding head of Paris-based sales banner Luxbox, which he created in 2015 with Fiorella Moretti who continues to run the company.

The sight of dogs ravaging war-torn streets has become an all too familiar sight. Sandra Tabet’s debut feature film “Rabies” (Rage) – a development project at the Atlas Workshops – returns to early 1990s in Beirut, in the aftermath of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), when rabies began to spread rapidly amongst ravenous dogs, leading to some parts of the city being overrun.

Combining horror genre codes with a real-world setting, “Rabies” follows 60-year-old history teacher Julia, who tries to find a cure for her 30-year-old son Ghassan, who after being bitten by a rabid dog slowly transforms into a violent monster.

Having studied in Beirut and London, Tabet left Beirut in 2021 and moved to France.

With “Rabies” she aims to further her exploration of the horror genre, following her acclaimed shorts, “The Howl” (2017), and “Hell” (2021).

Tunisian Youssef Chebbi’s “Plague,” Moroccan Adnane Baraka’s “We Don’t Forget” and Meryam Joobeur’s “Motherhood” feature among buzz titles at this year’s Marrakech Festival Atlas Workshops, which will have Martin Scorsese as their official patron.

Consolidated as a key platform for Moroccan, Arab and African projects and pix in production made by a new generation of filmmakers and created by Marrakech Festival artistic director Remi Bonhomme, the Atlas Workshops unspool Nov. 27-30. They take place alongside the 20th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival, which runs from Nov. 24-Dec. 2.

In a definite potential highlight of the Atlas Workshops, Meryjam Joubeur, whose “Brotherhood” was Oscar nominated for best live action short, will present 10 minutes of “Motherhood,” one of the awaited feature debuts of 2023. It is sure to spark major festival interest.

The Marrakech International Film Festival has unveiled the 25 projects selected for the sixth edition of its industry-focused Atlas Workshops, aimed at nurturing emerging Moroccan, Arab and African talent.

Running from November 27 to 30, the event will present 16 projects in development and nine films in production or post-production from 11 countries, selected from among the 320 applications received from the Arab world and African continent.

In a reflection of the growing diversity of the stories being told by Arab and African independent filmmakers, the selection spans a diverse range of film genres, from Lebanese director Sandra Tabet’s horror picture Rabies to Moroccan filmmaker Hind Bensari’s humanist documentary Out of School and Adnane Baraka’s poetic work We Don’t Forget.

Moroccan filmmaker Baraka made waves with his documentary Fragments from Heaven, about a nomad living in a tent in a remote part of Morocco who goes in search of meteorite fragments to boost the family fortunes.

One Direction star Niall Horan is set to cameo on rail-themed Channel 4 digital series, “Trainspotting with Francis Bourgeois.”

Produced by Untold Studios, the series sees TikTok creator Bourgeois introduce celebrities to the obscure hobby.

Horan will join Bourgeois for a “day of locomotive escapades” starting at Liverpool Street Station in London – but will a series of train cancelations and delays scupper their plans?

During the episode, which is available from June 14 on Channel 4’s YouTube, Horan reveals a very personal connection to trains, telling Bourgeois that his grandfather was a train driver. Movie buffs will also be thrilled to discover Horan’s grandfather drove the train in “The Great Train Robbery.”

Produced by powerhouse shingle Patagonik, the family dramedy was picked up by Netflix for several key territories after its theatrical release by Disney’s Star early this year.

Nearly a decade ago, directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado promised to usher in a new dawn of genre-flavored Israeli cinema with their first two offerings, Rabies (2010) and the somewhat controversial Big Bad Wolves (2013). Both have been wooed by English language filmmaking, pursing their own solo projects as director with Papushado unveiling Gunpowder Milkshake and Keshales offering up South of Heaven (which features Papushado as screenwriter alongside Kai Mark). Marrying a clutch of familiar narrative tropes, including the veritable Hitchcockian ‘wrong man’ syndrome and cancer melodrama, ‘nice guys’ may finish last, but they make it to the end credits—-unfortunately, there’s not enough characterization to care by the time we get there.…...

Oscar-winning director Danis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”) has boarded the high-end comedy-drama series “Frust,” which is currently being developed by Serbia’s Firefly Prods. and Hungary’s Joyrider.

The six-episode series follows a young writer struggling for recognition. The writer suddenly becomes a local celebrity after accidentally shooting a petty criminal who’s been terrorizing his neighborhood. Production of the series is slated for 2022.

“Frust” is among a slate of projects being presented at the European Film Market by Firefly, the Belgrade-based production outfit co-founded by Ivana Mikovic and Boban Jevtic.

Also in development is “Absolute 100,” a six-episode series based on the hit film by Srdan Golubović, which tells the story of a talented amateur shooter who reluctantly kills a local criminal when her family is threatened. According to JoBlo, Warner Bros. Pictures have a short list of possible frontrunners to helm the Guillermo del Toro-scripted "Justice League Dark" film adaptation. Del Toro wrote the recent screenplay with the desire to direct but decided to step down due to his commitment to helm "Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom", which is set up with Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures.

JoBlo revealed that the directing team of Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado and Fede Alvarez are in contention for the job. Epic Pictures Group Co-Founders Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson have accepted Wizard World Chicago's respected closing night invitation for their highly anticipated, award-winning horror film, "Jeruzalem." The Paz Brothers-helmed project will have its U.S. premiere at Bruce Campbell’s Horror Film Festival on August 23rd at the giant Wizard World Comic Con Chicago. Winner of the Audience Award and Best Editing Awards at the recent 32nd Jerusalem International Film Festival, "Jeruzalem" is expected to play to an Sro audience at the Muvico Theatre.

Marvel’s highly anticipated Ant-Man, with Paul Rudd, will be the opening night film, along with the Japanese animated film Miss Hokusai. Miss Hokusai comes from Production I.G., known for its other classics including A Letter to Momo and Giovanni’s Island.

However, given that the good was Very good I still held out hope that this sequel would live up to the expectations and potential that the format has.

Thankfully this time round the good outweighs the bad, although surprisingly there are some disappointing segments from directors whose work I’ve enjoyed; and whose feature work has been hailed as some of the best in the genre – not that there’s any evidence of that here – including...

Exclusive: Navot Papushado and Aharon Keshales have been set by Sony Pictures to write and direct a remake of the 2009 Hong Kong-French thriller Vengeance. Sony Pictures has acquired the underlying material and hired the duo for a film that Matt Tolmach will produce with Michele & Laurent Petin. Latter are the original rights holders and producers.

Papushado & Keshales are Israeli filmmakers whose 2010 debut Rabies was followed by Big Bad Wolves, a revenge tale that Quentin Tarantino called his favorite of 2013. It was acquired and released by Magnolia’s Magnet last January.

The Johnnie To-directed Vengeance is about a French chef who swears revenge after a violent attack on his daughter’s family in Hong Kong, during which her husband and two children are murdered. To help him find the killers, he hires three local hitmen working for the mafia.

Let’s not beat around the proverbial toilet-shaped bush here… the first ABCs of Death is a pretty dire affair. Out of 26 short films there are maybe a Billy Barty-sized handful of good to great ones with the remainder being a mix of lazy, dumb and poorly executed ideas. The announcement of a sequel was met with tepid anticipation because while that first film is unfortunate the idea behind the anthology — 26 directors, each with a letter of the alphabet, a miniscule budget and free reign to create a short relating their chosen word to the idea of death — is still a fantastic one overflowing with potential. Last week we brought you the insane and bloody red-band trailer for ABCs of Death 2. A tamer green-band trailer has now been released that you can show to your kids if you want! It's not as gory as the red-band, but it's still a fun trailer to watch that's packed full energy.

Making a name for themselves with Dead Hooker in a Trunk and American Mary, twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska make their anthology debut with The ABCs of Death 2, contributing a short film to the madness.

Though we don't yet have any idea what their entry will be about, we can be pretty damn sure it's going to be a hard one for male audiences to endure, as this just released behind-the-scenes shot leads us to believe. You have been warned, men!!

Hot on the heels of their ambitious horror anthology The ABCs Of Death, Drafthouse producers Ant Timpson and Tim League decided that the world needed another collection of horror shorts spanning every letter of the alphabet – and adventurous horror fans much like myself rejoiced. The ABCs Of Death 2 was greenlit, the directors were selected, and the inevitable waiting game began.

I tried on numerous occasions to extract as much information as possible from contributing artists – Jerome Sable, Aharon Keshales, Navot Papushado were tight-lipped in our interviews – but it looks like Magnet and Drafthouse are ready to start opening the floodgate of horrors hiding amidst these 26 short stories that are ready to shock, scare, and revolt viewers in ways the original didn’t dare.

While certain sites were originally given their own exclusive images, we’re now able to collect the smattering of gross faces, forest scenes, and creepy monsters...

★★☆☆☆Quentin Tarantino last year lauded Big Bad Wolves (2013), the second feature from Israeli filmmakers Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado (following on from their well-received 2010 debut, Rabies), as his favourite film of 2013 and it's easy to see why he embraced it so resoundingly. The directing duo have been schooled in the Hitchcockian, early-De Palma school of sustained tension, and those scenes in the film are punctuated by moments of unsettling, gleefully vicious gore, served with a side of jet black humour. But for all the well- orchestrated, transgressive sparks, there's an inescapable hollowness to Big Bad Wolves that didn't perpetrate their outstanding inaugural offering.

Directing duo Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado returned to London's Film4 FrightFest last year with Big Bad Wolves (2013), their follow-up to the darkly comic Rabies (2011). Once again blurring the lines between horror and political satire, this genre-savvy thriller examines the tenuous dichotomy between good and evil in a case of vengeance. To celebrate the home entertainment release of Big Bad Wolves this coming Monday (28 April), we have Three DVD copies of the Israeli revenge thriller to give away to our bloodthirsty readers, courtesy of the film's UK distributors Metrodome. I know what you’re thinking, not another Israeli slasher movie? Directed by Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, Rabies has nothing to do with foaming at the mouth and going insane but it does have a dog. So that’s ok. It’s not really a slasher movie either but we’ll let that go for now. If they want to bill it as the first Israeli slasher movie that’s fine, but for me Rabies is a genre defying comedy with a little murder thrown in for good measure. A brother and sister run away from home to find sanctuary in a deserted nature reserve, complete with psychopathic killers, land mines and bear traps.
