Action documentary Fighting Fear posted a modest opening over the weekend, after receiving the biggest release in history for an Australian documentary. The film, which is directed by Bra Boys filmmaker Macario De Souza and distributed by Garage Entertainment, opened on 55 screens and grossed $104,555, with a screen average of $1,639. The documentary follows the friendship of mixed martial arts fighter Richie Vas and pro surfer Mark Matthews as they deal with the highs and lows of their personal and professional lives. French-Australian co-production Santa's Apprentice also opened over the weekend, posting a screen average of $833 across 149 screens and grossing $124,092. The film features the voice talents of Shane Jacobson (Kenny) and singer, Delta Goodrem. Feel-good...

It's been confirmed that the animated family film, Santa's Apprentice, will be released later this year, most likely in time for Christmas. The film features a slew of our local voice talent including Magda Szubanski, Shane Jacobson, Delta Goodrem and Hugh Sheridan. Being touted as a heartwarming family Christmas tale, Santa's Apprentice follows seven-year-old Nicolas as he prepares to become the next Santa Claus. He soon learns that it's a tougher gig than it first appears and one that includes a whole lot of responsibility... A French/Australian co-production, the film recently won the special Unicef award at the largest international animation event, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, in France.

The Weinstein Company has taken North American and UK rights to 'Santa's Apprentice', a feature animation co-produced by Ireland's Cartoon Saloon. The film tells the story of Santa who finds himself nearing the age of retirement. 'Santa's Apprentice', directed by Luc Vinciguerra, sees Santa having to retire against his wishes and thus having to train his replacement. The film's Irish producers are Cartoon Saloon's Paul Young (Song of the Sea) and Ross Murray (The Secret of Kells). Background animation was carried out in Cartoon Saloon under the supervision of Marco Martin.

The Weinstein Company has picked up North American as well as U.K. rights to the 2D animated film called "Santa's Apprentice," produced by French company Gaumont's cartoon production arm Alphanim. Flick is a spinoff of Jan Van Rijsselberge's hit animated series "SantApprentice" and tells of Santa Claus who must train a shy little boy to become his apprentice as he reluctantly retires. Australian company Avrill Stark Entertainment co-produced the film in association with Irish company Cartoon Saloon (known for "The Secret of Kells").
