Following the resignations of executive director Hadrian Belove and board member and Shadie Elnashai, Cinefamily has closed, temporarily suspending “all Cinefamily activities in order to allow for the investigation and necessary restructure of management and the board.”
The Cinefamily board asked for the resignations last week after an anonymous email circulated claiming that Belove “has been accused of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse by former employees and volunteers” and accused Elnashai of “raping multiple women, all verbally threatened and scared into silence after the assaults.”

Brie Larson, Women of Cinefamily Co-Founder, Calls for ‘Further Action’ on Sexual Harassment Charges
In the wake of sexual harassment allegations against staffers at Los Angeles independent theater Cinefamily, actress Brie Larson has commented on the dramatic events at the institution where she co-founded the Women of Cinefamily collective.
Larson and Tina Poppy co-founded the Women of Cinefamily group in 2014. After Poppy left Cinefamily, Alia Penner took the role of co-founder. A source close to both Larson and Penner said that they were planning to step back from involvement with the organization for the foreseeable future.
“The allegations at Cinefamily are upsetting to me personally, both as an advocate for sexual assault survivors and a member of the community,” Larson said, in a statement posted to her Twitter feed. “Firstly, I would like to thank the brave survivors who spoke up — I believe you. The responsibility of handling allegations of this nature should never fall on the assaulted. Cinefamily prides itself on being a...

If you like your action-spy dramas like “The Americans” and “Homeland,” that is with serious political overtones and lots of high tension, then “Comrade Detective” probably isn’t for you. But if you love Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt at their goofiest and are a fan of “Kung Pow! Enter the Fist” then you won’t be able to resist bingeing this new Amazon series.

As the hilarious first trailer makes very clear, “Comrade Detective” is the story of a hit 1983 Romanian buddy cop TV series that finds its way into Tatum and Gordon-Levitt’s hands. The two actors decide to bring the series to America, but not by starring in an adaptation themselves. Instead, they assemble an all star voice cast to lip dub the Romanian series. “Comrade Detective” is the result of this endeavor.

Leonard's been on our mind lately. Or rather, Leonards.
There's this new movie, 'Treatment,' that premiered at Tribeca with Joshua Leonard (yes, the one from 'The Blair Witch Project' and 'Humpday') as a guy named Leonard. And while dwelling on all things Christopher Nolan, we couldn't help but think of 'Memento''s memory-challenged Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce).
You give your character a moniker like that and he could be a hero, a potential murderer, a sinister sidekick, the love of someone's life or just a nice, ordinary guy, even if the name is supposed to mean "lion-hearted."
What's in a name? Join us as we pay tribute to a bunch of guys we know who happen to answer to Leonard.

Before you hear about Treatment from its witty, wacky co-directors and stars, here's an introductory tidbit about the film: 'Leonard and Nelson are friends/screenwriting partners looking for a fast track to success. As both confront a mid-30s reality check and a pile of unsuccessful screenplays, Leonard convinces Nelson to back his stint at a glitzy La rehab clinic so he can pitch their new movie deal to mega-star Gregg D. As the half-baked plan twists and turns, and Leonard's ambition and selfishness spin out of control, the writing duo's friendship cries for an overdue dose of reality.' --Genna Terranova Also to note: Parts of this interview are not 100% serious and tend to veer violently/delightfully off topic. Comedians; what can we say? Directors Steven Schardt and Sean Nelson Tribeca: Tell us a little about Treatment. Steven Schardt: Sean Nelson and I co-directed the film. Joshua Leonard...

"At first it was about neighborhood," begins Eric Hynes in the Voice. "Then it was about stars, parties, and supersizing. But finally, for its 10th incarnation, the Tribeca Film Festival (April 20-May 1) seems to be about movies. Gone are the superfluous, attention-sucking Hollywood premieres (Tom Cruise on a Jet Ski, anyone?), and few are the big-name, low-quality vanity projects. Several years into a vital slimming of the slate — the fest topped out at 176 films in 2005; this year, it's a manageable 93 — Tff remains New York's largest film survey."
To celebrate Tribeca's 10th, we're running a retrospective of some of the best films the festival's shown over the past decade here at Mubi. Happy viewing.

In the last few years, actor Joshua Leonard has become the go-to actor for indie filmmakers, particularly the likes of Lynn Shelton who cast Leonard in her movie Humpday , which has spiraled into quite an amazing new chapter in Leonard's career. Leonard appears in two movies at this year's Tribeca Film Festival : Treatment , a comedy he stars in along with Sean Nelson, who also wrote and co-directed the film with Steven Schardt, the two of them playing screenwriters who get the crazy idea of sending Leonard into rehab to get close to a superstar actor Gregg D, played by Ross Partridge; and Vera Farmiga's Higher Ground , a film we raved about at the Sundance Film Festival . The last time we spoke to Leonard was for Humpday along with Shelton and Mark Duplass, and we found...

"Treatment" is the funniest, most energetic film yet to come out of the mumblecore movement, which has proven to be as incestuous as it is prolific. Its star, Joshua Leonard (whose beak nose and shaggy charm resemble Owen Wilson's), and director/producer Steven Schardt were also involved with 2009's “Humpday." That movie's co-star Mark Duplass was the co-director of 2008's “Baghead”; Duplass' wife, Katie Aselton, directed, wrote, and starred in last year's “The Freebie,” which also featured Leonard. Some of the troupe—Duplass and Greta Gerwig, most notably—have paved their way into mainstream films.
Until now, these mumblecore films have retained a depressing, stilted sameness. They are small in scale, taking about a week or so to shoot in one or two settings, and hew to the mumblecore style of stammering dialogue, tight close-ups and an endlessly shaky camera, all in the service of achieving so-called realism.

It's not uncommon at all for a washed-up celebrity to find themselves in rehab after a few too many years of hard living. So why wouldn't any enterprising young screenwriter try to take advantage of that situation? In the black comedy Treatment, which premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, Humpday's Joshua Leonard stars as that very screenwriter, who's encouraged by his best friend to pony up $15,000 and join a famous actor he knows slightly (Ross Partridge) at a rehab facility called Wingspan. As the festival guide describes it, "not to be confused with your typical 'bromance,' Treatment picks up after the honeymoon, when there is some growing up to do and maybe even a little 'bromancipation." To introduce you to the world of Wingspan and Leonard's aimless character we're debuting an exclusive clip from Treatment, which contains both the orientation video for Wingspan and shots of...

And the festival beat marches on… nothing on this list immediately jumps out at me… no titles I recognize. These are just the World Narrative and Documentary competition selections, so, there’ll be more announcements made later. I do see representation from South Africa, Egypt and Rwanda. It’s in my backyard, so you know I’ll be covering it!

Chicago – Few couples have made as indelible an impression on the modern independent film scene as Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton. Best known for their breakout work in 2005’s “The Puffy Chair,” the two actors-turned-filmmakers have forged a variety of collaborations, most recently in the FX sitcom, “The League.”
Yet while Mark has written and directed a series of films with his brother Jay, “The Freebie” marks Aselton’s feature filmmaking debut. Co-produced by her husband, this romantic dramedy tells the tale of Annie (Aselton) and Darren (Dax Shepard), whose unbridled level of honesty runs the risk of snuffing out their spark. With their sex life at a standstill, the couple hatches a plan. They agree to each find a one night stand that will hopefully reignite their physical passion for one another. Unfortunately, the ‘freebie’ proves to have a major price. Hollywood Chicago chatted with Aselton about her chemistry with Shepard,...
