The Menippus of the series is based on an actual historical figure, Menippus of Gadara. He was a Syrian freedman (freed slave) who became a Cynic philosopher and satirist. He is credited with creating the genre of Menippean satire, which satirized mental attitudes and traditional religious beliefs. Menippus' works are lost, but part of his style survives in the works of his imitators Marcus Terentius Varro and Lucian of Samosata.
Charon is a psychopomp figure of Greek mythology. He was "the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. " For safe passage of the soul, Charon received payment in coins.
Hermes is a Greek God, who performed many roles in the Greek pantheon. One of them was the role of a psychopomp, escorting the souls of the slain to the Underworld.
