In the play of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, Rosaline is never seen; she dumps Romeo before the start of the play.
The project has been in development since 2010. In August 2011, Keira Knightley was in talks for the role of Rosaline. In October 2011, Hailee Steinfeld and Deborah Ann Woll were considered for the roles of Juliet and Rosaline, respectively, while Dave Franco was considered for the role of Romeo.
Kyle Allen, who plays Romeo, previously appeared in West Side Story (2021), which is a modern version of Romeo and Juliet. He played a member of the Jets - equivalent to the Montagues, Romeo's family.
In 2012, Lily Collins and Deborah Ann Woll were in talks for the roles of Juliet and Rosaline, respectively. In 2013, Allison Williams and Emilia Clarke were set to play Rosaline and Juliet, while Dave Franco would play Romeo.
Directors Michael Sucsy and Alex Timbers, were once set to direct the film. In January 2017, Ry Russo-Young was announced as the director.
