The bandit gang hangs the town leader just as the son arrives with the extortion money. They then kill the son just because they can. One bandit feels a bit of remorse and says he is leaving the gang. As they part ways the gang is caught by the officials. One man is taken into custody and for punishment has a leg amputated. He escapes while transported to prison. This is our titled villain the one legged fiend. He seeks out the brother who left the gang for revenge because he believes he betrayed the gang. He gets his revenge on the brother and his wife but the son survives and swears revenge. The story goes on with the one legged fiend continuing his evil ways.
The sword fights in this movie are substandard even for 1968. The choreography is the simple raising of a sword that is hit by the stunt men. Our one legged lead character is not really an amputee. To make an actor appear one legged requires bending the knee completely and tying the foot to below the butt. This can be painful and difficult to balance. Here, to make him appear one legged, he bent the knee at only 90 degrees. This leaves his lower leg conspicuously pointing out the back of his cape.
My copy is a computer file made from what appears to be a videotape made of a television broadcast. It has Chinese and English subtitles that are mostly readable but sometimes chopped off on the sides as happens with widescreen movies.
Story-wise, it starts interesting but by 20 minutes flounders due to lack of a clear protagonist. By about 45 minutes the hero reappears for his first attempt at revenge. After that some more drama is added by a flashback twist.
This movie would only draw the interest of a fan of martial arts movies from the golden age 1967 to 1984 who is interested in watching every movie ever made from that era. I am one such fan. I cannot recommend this movie as it falls below average. I have watched it once to write this review and I am done with it.
