If you're not up for contributing to "Deadpool & Wolverine" absolutely obliterating the box office, you can always turn to streaming for your entertainment fix. Of course, as we all know by now, doing so is somewhat akin to wading into a dangerous and stagnant swamp from which you might never escape. Everyone has experienced the despair that comes with endlessly scrolling streaming catalogs wondering how, when everything is at our fingertips, there's nothing to watch. Well, now a real hero has arrived in the form of Bruce Willis.
Yes, the man himself may have retired from acting following his 2023 diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration, but he remains a hero to us all, and is proving his remarkably enduring appeal once again. This time, he's doing just that by cutting through the murk of the Netflix swamp with 2010's "Red," an adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's comic book...

On Aug. 1, the six-part mystery series A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder debuts on Netflix. Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

The anime world is buzzing with excitement as Tasha Huo, renowned for her work on ‘Red Sonja’ and the ‘Tomb Raider’ animated series, has been announced to take on the script for Lionsgate’s live-action ‘Naruto‘ movie. This revelation came from Variety’s ‘10 Screenwriters to Watch for 2023,’ highlighting Huo’s rising prominence in the industry.
Lionsgate’s journey to adapt ‘Naruto’ has been a long and evolving process. The Tracking Board Hollywood news website first broke the news in 2015 that Lionsgate had secured the rights for the manga’s live-action film adaptation. They were in talks with Michael Gracey, known for directing ‘The Greatest Showman,’ to helm the project. A year later, at the Jump Festa event, it was confirmed that Lionsgate and Gracey were working on the film with the involvement of Masashi Kishimoto, the original creator of ‘Naruto.’
The production has seen various key figures involved over the years.

Bruce Willis burst onto the American entertainment scene as the glib, smart-alecky detective David Addison Jr. opposite Cybill Shepherd’s Maddie Haynes in ABC’s Moonlighting, a show that helped launch the dramedy genre. Willis was not long for the small screen, though, with his his sharp tongue and sarcastic wit destined for bigger things.
More than 90 films and $5.3 billion later, Willis has played a smart-aleck New York detective in the Die Hard series, a smart-aleck oil driller-turned-astronaut in Armageddon, a smart-aleck cop in The Last Boy Scout, a smart-aleck gangster in Last Man Standing, a smart-aleck soldier in Tears of the Sun … well, you get the picture.
When he wasn’t cracking wise, Willis played many other memorable roles in films that included The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Billy Bathgate (1991), Color of Night (1994), 12 Monkeys (1995), The Fifth Element (1997), The Sixth Sense (1999) The Story of Us (1999), Looper (2012) and Motherless Brooklyn...

Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.
Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. After that, season 3 of Danny McBride evangelical comedy The Righteous Gemstones premieres on June 18. That will be...

Exclusive: Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix franchise), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice) and Liana Liberato (To the Bone) have signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming feature Face, based on her 2021 bestseller, Face: One Square Foot of Skin.
The film penned by Bateman consists of 14 vignettes, both comedic and dramatic, which look at women’s faces getting older, and why that makes people angry. While much of society appears to assume that women’s faces are somehow broken and need to be fixed, Face reveals some of the many ways in which women, and those around them, allow this idea to take root at all.
Parker will play Tanya, an actress balancing her need to use her face for her job and the pressure to not move it at all, with Moss as Mrs. Foster, a kindergarten teacher whose young students remind her of the magical functionality of the face.

The original film, which is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime, sees Breaker and his son reunite to arrest Union Army friend “The Saint”—now a fierce gang leader, whose raids threaten to bring the country back into conflict.
In the new film set in the 1870s, Breaker is now a Federal Marshal, setting out with his loyal best friend, Deputy Marshall Bugle Bearclaw, on a mission to deliver a warrant for Henry Bronson, aka Dead-Eye. After capturing the life-long criminal, delivering him to the local Marshal in Absolem’s Hill should be pretty straightforward. But Dead-Eye just happens to be the one-eyed, estranged twin brother...

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

She’s played a queen, and now she’ll be a god.
Helen Mirren has joined New Line’s DC comics adaptation “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” as Hespera, the villainous daughter of the god Atlas.
Practically the entire team behind 2019’s “Shazam!” is returning for the sequel, including stars Asher Angel and Zachary Levi (who plays the adult version of Billy whenever he has the power of Shazam). David F. Sandberg is directing the film from a script by Henry Gayden. The original earned $366 million globally.
Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”) is also expected to join the franchise in the sequel.
Mirren’s role is somewhat mysterious, as Hespera does not have a clear equivalent from the DC comics. But she undoubtedly has some feelings about Shazam’s powers, which include the stamina of her father, Atlas — as well as the strength of Hercules, the power of Zeus, the wisdom of Solomon,...

The film tells a previously little-known story of political maneuvering by the Korean Central Intelligence Agency in the 1970s, a time of military rule under President Park Chung-hee. Focus is placed on Park’s aides in the 40 days before one of them assassinates him in 1979.
Directed by Woo Min-ho, the film was released in January and became one of the top performers in the pre-coronavirus period, earning $36.6 million. Production was by Hive Media and Showbox.

It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when Bruce Willis seemed to lose any and all interest in his career and start phoning it in, but the actor’s slide from the very top of the A-list to bottom of the barrel VOD purgatory has been going on for close to a decade now. The 65 year-old turns up, goes through the motions, picks up his paycheck and heads home, which is a far cry from when he was one of cinema’s biggest stars.
In the last eight years alone, Willis has shown up in no less than 30 movies, and only in Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom and Rian Johnson’s Looper has he given a memorable performance. Fifteen of them have gone straight to video, and outside of franchise turns in A Good Day to Die Hard, G.I Joe: Retaliation, Red 2 and Glass, the rest have bombed at the box office.

With less than three weeks before U.S. theaters reopen August 21, major studios have slowed their PVOD releases. With the promise of reopening comes a shot at a profitable theatrical life, but the PVOD revolution continued apace with Liongate’s “The Secret: Dare to Dream.” It immediately reached as high as #1 on VOD charts on Friday.
The film is the very definition of a high-concept presale: A self-help book published in 2006, “The Secret” was an Oprah Winfrey Club title that sold 30 million copies. Directed by Andy Tennant (“Hitch”), it stars Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas. Gravitas Ventures and Roadside Attractions acquired it last November, and planned an April theatrical release. After the theaters closed, it moved to Roadside partner Lionsgate, which has a dedicated VOD division. It opened July 31 on PVOD at $19.99.
On FandangoNow, it landed immediately as #1 and holds the slot for the full week, despite having only three days of release.

Once upon a time, Bruce Willis was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, able to pick and choose his projects however he saw fit having established a solid track record at the box office ever since Die Hard first catapulted him towards the top of the A-list.
However, the 65 year-old’s star has faded dramatically over the last decade, and having sleepwalked his way through virtually every one of his major roles recently, he now finds himself occupying the same territory as Nicolas Cage. Both veterans have a string of critical and commercial hits under their belts, but are a lot more likely to be found slumming it in a bunch of bargain-basement action movies that don’t even come under consideration for a theatrical release.

It’s just one year short of 30 years that stoner, doofus surf boys Bill and Ted wrote a song to save the universe in “Bill And Ted’s Bogus Journey,” but somewhat surprisingly, the duo, still played by Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, are back for the long-in-the-works threequel, “Bill And Ted Face The Music.” Directed this time by Dean Parisot perhaps the driving force behind this one, aside from Reeves and Winter who never gave up hope on this sequel for decades is original writers Ed Solomon (known for both original films and “Men In Black”) and Chris Matheson (“Mom and Dad Save the World”).

The project, written by Jon and Erich Hoeber, follows a man who wakes up in Tijuana after being left for dead with absolutely no memory. As he follows a string of clues to uncover his identity, he discovers that he’s been living two different lives: one, as a super-successful Crime Kingpin, surrounded by beautiful women, expensive toys and a lavish lifestyle, and the other as an undercover CIA agent, but with a puny salary, no family or home life whatsoever and zero trappings of success. The problem is, he can’t remember which of these two personas is his true identity. Annie Marter (Transcendence) of 87North will executive produce. Drew Simon, Kevin Sauer and Sam Brown are overseeing the development for Stx.

Marvel may be the dominant force in comic book movies at the moment just through sheer numbers, it’s actually DC Comics that has the historical edge. Films based on DC properties go back nearly a century to those ancient Batman and Superman serials, while Marvel didn’t really get things going until this century. That’s a lot of history — how do the recent “Birds of Prey” and “Joker” stack up? Let’s take a look.

The DC Comics universe hasn’t quite flooded the big screen the way Marvel ones have in the past decade, but the DC brand has been hitting the big screen longer in the era of color, starting with the 1966 Adam West “Batman.” We ranked all those modern flicks, from “Batman: The Movie” to the DC Extended Universe’s “Wonder Woman,” “Justice League,” “Aquaman” and “Shazam.”

The film finds Superman trying to eliminate the world’s nuclear threat, but his best intentions run afoul of a silly, badly dated villain named Nuclear Man.

“Bill & Ted” fans rejoiced in May when it was confirmed a third film in the franchise was on the way with original stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Returning returning. The film, entitled “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” announced it was heading into pre-production with “Galaxy Quest” and “Red 2” filmmaker Dean Parisot directing from a script by Chris Matheson and Ed Soloman, both of whom wrote the 1989 original and its 1991 sequel. Unfortunately, the third installment might not be as much of a guarantee as originally reported.
Speaking to Yahoo! Entertainment, Reeves cast doubt on “Bill & Ted Face the Music” happening by teasing some behind-the-scenes issues. The actor did not get into any of the specifics, but he did mention he’s unsure as of July 2018 if a third movie is “a reality.” Reeves said the script is ready to go but that “financing, rights, deals” are standing in the way.
