Having started his directing career overseeing pop videos, it's clear that music is still an integral part of how Spike Jonze works as a film director. From Christopher Walken boogieing to Fatboy Slim's 'Weapon of Choice' to Greta Gerwig's carefree dance to Arcade Fire's 'Afterlife' at the recent YouTube music awards, Jonze is an expert at intertwining sound and image.
The latter group's 'Wake Up' overlaid the stunning trailer for Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, and the two take their collaboration further with Her. The future-set love story stars Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with his operating system (voiced alluringly by Scarlett Johansson).

Today’s film is the 2011 short Scenes From The Suburbs. The film stars Sam Dillon and Zoe Graham, and is co-written by Arcade Fire members Will and Win Butler, along with Spike Jonze, who also directs. While Jonze has appeared as an actor in films such as Three Kings and The Game, he is best known as a writer and director, with his filmography including Being John Malkovich, Where The Wild Things Are, and Adaptation. Jonze is also one of the writers of Bad Grandpa, which opens wide in American theatres this weekend.

After getting some excellent short films out of his system with Scenes From the Suburbs and I’m Here, director Spike Jonze is finally returning to feature territory and following up Where the Wild Things Are with a film about a man who falls in love with the voice of a Siri-esque computer. Details are, of course, sparse on the project, but we’ve got some new casting to report.
In some news about Sony Pictures acquiring international rights to the film that is set to be produced by Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Pictures, Deadline also snuck in that Olivia Wilde is part of the cast. She’ll join Amy Adams and Joaquin Phoenix, stars of Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master (also funded by Ellison), as well as Rooney Mara and Samantha Morton in the upcoming film.

Update: Okay, so this isn't the political satire at all. Instead, it's a Jonze-penned romance that first started bubbling to life last summer, that follows a man who falls in love with a Siri-like computer voice. Joaquin Phoenix and Carey Mulligan are also attached to this project, with Amy Adams and Samantha Morton now looking to come aboard as well. Either way, it sounds great. It has been three, far too long years since Spike Jonze's last feature film, the wonderful "Where The Wild Things Are" and while various videos and shorts he's done in the interim -- including "I'm Here" and "Scenes From The Suburbs" -- were nice holdovers, we're glad that his next movie, penned by Charlie Kaufman, appears to be taking shape. First announced over a year ago, Megan Ellison and her Annapurna shingle got things rolling by backing the project and over 2011 Joaquin Phoenix and Carey Mulligan came aboard.

We've featured several short films from director Spike Jonze before like his love story I'm Here, and Scenes from the Suburbs, a collaboration with the band Arcade Fire. Now we have yet another spectacular short film from the filmmaker who brought us such films as Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. Titled Mourir Auprès de Toi (To Die By Your Side), the lovely stop-motion animated short was co-directed with Simon Cahn and is based partly on the work of fashion designer Olympia Le-Tan complete with cut-felt characters that come to life from book covers from the Shakespeare & Company bookshop in Paris. Here's Spike Jonze's Mourir Auprès de Toi (To Die By Your Side) from Nowness (via The Playlist): Whimsical, peculiar and generally charming, this is yet another great notch on Jonze's filmmaking belt and the filmmaker says, "For this one the feeling definitely started with the handmade aesthetic and...

While things seemed to have been quiet for Spike Jonze since his 2009 adaptation of the children’s classic “Where the Wild Things Are,” the director has been very busy in the last year or so, making a return to the sort of short form film projects and music videos that gave him his street cred. 2010 saw Jonze delivering the lovely short "I'm Here" and working with Arcade Fire on their “Scenes from the Suburbs” flick, while this year he co-directed the short “Mourir Aupres de Toi (To Die Next),” made the memorable Beastie Boys action figure video "Don't Play…...

It was reported earlier this year that cinematic savior Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Productions was on board to finance the next film from director Spike Jonze and writer Charlie Kaufman, who brought us the masterpieces Being John Malkovich and Adaptation.
The film was said to be a political satire, which follows world leaders who converge to understand all the important events that affect the planet, from the price of oil to war. It is now reported by Twitch that Joaquin Phoenix is attached to star in the film, the actor who is also in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s currently shooting The Master (financed by Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Productions as well).
After loving most work by Kaufman and Jonze, I can’t wait to see what they’ll do with this. Jonze recently directed the fantastic Arcade Fire short film Scenes from the Suburbs, which can be viewed here. With Ellison on a run,...

The short is a collaboration with Arcade Fire obviously and stars some unknowns. Bandleader Win Butler wrote the film with his brother William Butler, which follows a group of suburban kids during a dystopian summer where “military control of their town makes the lazy days more aimless than ever.”

Spike Jonze and Arcade Fire are a match made in heaven; their collaboration on the trailer campaign for Jones’ superb Where The Wild Things Are resulted in nothing short of a work of art.

Over at The Av Club, Steven Hyden notes that "You can’t be a defining concept record of your time if you don’t have an accompanying movie directed by an acclaimed filmmaker." Spike Jonze has finally released his 28-minute short film Scenes From the Suburbs which is available for free viewing on Mubi right now, and should also be available online via Playstation. The short is a collaboration with members of the recent Grammy winners Arcade Fire and will be featured in a deluxe edition of Arcade Fire’s album The Suburbs that includes a behind the scenes doc, some extra tracks and more.
The bad news is the short seems to only be available in the U.S. which is a shame considering the band emerged mostly from Montreal. Considering we reside in Montreal, we aren’t very happy about it.
Scenes From the Suburbs stars unknowns (Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williams) and was described as follows in the Berlin festival program:
“I wish I could remember every little moment. But I can’t.

Is it possible for a film to arrive at a time that’s emotionally inconvenient?
That’s the question I’m pondering as I sit here, having just watched Spike Jonze‘s collaboration with Arcade Fire, the short film Scenes from the Suburbs. This needs to be established upfront: I’m what you would call a younger fellow. As of this writing, in fact, I graduated from high school two days ago, and got back from two graduation parties right before I sat down and watched this. At said parties were a few of my best friends, some of whom I’ve known since I was five or six. In about two months, I’ll be going off to college, living somewhere different, and meeting new people.
I’ve recently been asking myself a question I don’t want to face: Am I going to see these people after I go away?...

It feels like years since rumors started flying that Spike Jonze would be collaborating with Montreal's favorite sons Arcade Fire on a short film inspired by their latest album--and indeed, the project was first revealed over a year ago. We've had a glimpse of the final product (entitled "Scenes From The Suburbs"), in the form of the video for the title track from the album, and the film premiered at SXSW last month, but with the group now anointed as one of the biggest bands in the world, following their surprise success at the Grammys, it feels like about time…...

Eat My Shorts is a bi-weekly column that showcases and reviews short films.
More than 130 short films, including narrative, animation and documentary varieties and new works from the likes of Harmony Korine (we shared that awesomeness earlier) and Ondi Timoner, could be seen at SXSW this year. That's not even including the music video program, which could very well count, especially since some of the official short series featured examples of the format. At lengths of anywhere between a minute and a half-hour each, that's a lot of entertainment.
While in Austin, I managed to only see a small fraction of the offerings, such as the four excellent selections for this year's Medium Cool program of "(not so) shorts." There was the early Jarmusch-like 'John's Gone' by the Safdie brothers, the long-form Arcade Fire video, titled 'Scenes from the Suburbs,'...

Austin -- For those who sought shelter from the heat and Spring Break insanity of 6th Street in Austin for South By Southwest, there was always the option of heading to the "Suburbs," inside a movie theater. "Scenes from the Suburbs" -- the short film by Arcade Fire brothers Win and Will Butler and director Spike Jonze -- made its debut during the movie and music fest, included in a shorts program. The 30-minute clip mixed nostalgia, teenaged dreams and a city at war with other American cities. The younger Butler was on hand to take questions about the clip, which...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The City Dark Trailer Ian Cheney may have something. I never considered the idea about living where the stars are obscured by the blitz of big city light rushing upwards,...

While technically not a full-length feature, Spike Jonze's Arcade Fire music video/short film/spin-off/thingee "Scenes from the Suburbs" is one of the most hotly anticipated and frequently discussed entries in this year's SXSW line-up, so much so that they paired it with three other medium-length "shorts" and created a whole new distinction for them. (Since they're longer than shorts but shorter than features.) "What is it?", is the biggest question, but "Will it work?" was just as pressing. The film opens up with narration, provided by Arcade Fire mastermind Win Butler, setting up a kind of alternate history in which suburbs,…...

The trailer for Scenes From the Suburbs, a 28-minute short created by director Spike Jonze (Where The Wild Things Are) with members of the recently Grammy winning Arcade Fire is now online. The film stars newcomers Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williamson. The band executive produced the project with their manager Scott Rodger and the film’s concept art was created by fellow Canadian Marcel Dzama, the acclaimed illustrator who directed the animated promo for Arcade Fire’s Madison Square Garden concerts last summer. Lead singer Win Butler wrote the film with his brother William Butler. As for the plot of Jonze’s film, the Berlin festival program summary reads:
“I wish I could remember every little moment. But I can’t. Why do I only remember the moments that I do? I wonder what happens to the others.” A group of suburban youths.

Just before it's debut at the Berlin Film Festival, we got a look at the plot for Spike Jonze and Arcade Fire's short film, Scenes from The Suburbs. Basically it's a 28 minute film which tells the story of bored kids during a summer in which their town is on military lockdown. Jonze is being the camera, with group frontman Win Butler writing the script along with his brother, William. Here's...

Sometime last year, Spike Jonze shot a 30-minute film with Arcade Fire called Scenes From the Suburbs in honor of the Canadian indie band's third album, The Suburbs. Today, the first trailer from said project (which was written by Jonze, Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler and Butler's bandmate/brother Will) surfaced on the Internet, complete with so much suburban teenage ennui and narrator nostalgia that it ends up feeling like a modern-day version of the viewer-beloved 90's movie The Sandlot. Let's investigate.

The average listener may not have known much about the indie rock band Arcade Fire before their Album of the Year win at the Grammys not too long ago, but the Internet was in quite an uproar about the victory. Meanwhile, we've been fans for awhile, and loved band members Régine Chassagne and Win Butler's score for Richard Kelly's The Box even if Arcade Fire as a whole wasn't involved. And now we have a film project of theirs to look forward to with a trailer for Scenes from the Suburbs, a short film written by Butler and Chassagne and directed by Spike Jonze, the man behind films like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. Watch below! We can't really be sure what to expect from the trailer, but it feels like a gritty, real-life sci-fi flick not unlike District 9 or Monsters and that has me absolutely riveted.

Down with the Capitol, and up with the casting of Katniss Everdeen!
Word on the street is that "Winter's Bone" lead and Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence is leading the race for the starring role in the upcoming "Hunger Games" adaptation, though a source confirmed to MTV's Hollywood Crush that no offers have yet been made.
Meanwhile, Josh Hutcherson admitted at South by Southwest that he would love to play Peeta, one of the two love interests in the flick. We're expecting that the casting of Peeta will wait until Katniss is in the bag, but it's worth noting that Hutcherson has thrown his hat into the ring.
But "Hunger Games" isn't the only news in the arena. The first "Conan the Barbarian" trailer has hit the web, Baz Luhrmann has a "Great Gatsby" update. and more after the jump!
"Conan" Arrives
Finally, video footage has hit the web from the upcoming "Conan the Barbarian.

As you may have heard Spike Jonez has directed a 28-minute short film called Scenes From the Suburbs in collaboration with the Grammy Award winning band Arcade Fire. The film was written by Win Butler and his bother William, and we have a trailer for the film to share with you.
The movie stars (Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williams) and was described as follows,
“I wish I could remember every little moment. But I can’t. Why do I only remember the moments that I do. I wonder what happens to the others.” A group of suburban youths. Back then, in the summer, so long ago. They couldn’t leave town because outside the country was at war and the military controlled life and all gateways. The teenagers wander aimlessly about town. Winter is a long way off. And love and longing and friendship still mean – everything.

The latest film from Spike Jonze is Scenes From the Suburbs, a 28-minute short created in collaboration with members of the recent Grammy winners Arcade Fire. Bandleader Win Butler wrote the film with his brother William Butler, and the story follows suburban kids during one summer where military control of their town makes the lazy days more aimless than ever. Win Butler narrates the trailer for the film, which you can see after the break. As we told you recently [1], Scenes From the Suburbs stars unknowns (Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williams) and was described as follows in the Berlin festival program: “I wish I could remember every little moment. Riding high off their Grammy win, and with a post-celebratory jaunt around the world this spring and summer, Arcade Fire show no signs of slowing down any time soon. And they still have more in store for their fans including the Spike Jonze-directed short film "Scenes From The Suburbs" which first appeared in an abbreviated form in the video for "The Suburbs." Starring a cast of unknowns including Sienna Blau, Sam Dillon, Zoe Graham, Zeke Jarmon, Paul Pluymen and Ashlin Williamson, the conceptual film is set in a no-too distant, war-ravaged America with the suburbs fenced off from the danger…...
