In the opening few moments of The Substance, we’re given a potted history of the Hollywood Walk of Fame star for one Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) from shiny and new through to weathered, cracked and having fast food dropped on to it. Although this is not quite the precise metaphor for Elisabeth’s career, her star is very much about to fall as she is unceremoniously dumped from her popular exercise show on her fiftieth birthday, no less.

Review: The Substance was the unexpected toast of Cannes when it played there back in the spring. Critics hailed Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s maximalist take on body horror, with many praising the fearless lead performances from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. I went into it expecting a solid little horror satire, but I didn’t think I’d be watching the greatest body horror movie made since the heyday of David Cronenberg.

Fargeat’s movie offers Demi Moore one of her career’s best (and most grotesque) roles. She plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a one-time movie star who’s now best known for hosting a popular morning workout show.

However, the franchise has expanded over the decades, exploring different eras of the galaxy far far away. As new storytelling opportunities have emerged, a potential series focusing on a young Princess Leia Organa could be created.

Assuming that such a series materializes sometime in the future, one Stranger Things star would be the perfect replacement for Carrie Fisher, who sadly passed away a few years ago. The Substance, French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s second film after her brutal directorial debut Revenge, has had a tumultuous road to the screen. Demi Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a TV fitness instructor, fired from her job on her 50th birthday. Devastated, Elisabeth turns to a secretive lab that offers her a new treatment: The Substance. The treatment will create a “younger, more beautiful, more perfect” version of Elisabeth, but there’s a catch. Writer-and-director Coralie Fargeat’s viscera-splattered follow-up to 2017’s Revenge is about as subtle as a bludgeon to the head, or, indeed, a needle to the thigh. Thankfully, it’s also much more perversely enjoyable than either of those experiences. Just as long as you’re not squeamish at the sight of blood, cascades of organs and the most grotesque prosthetic creations since 1989’s Society.

The first shot of this intensely squishy film is of a raw egg that, removed from context, is reminiscent of a disembodied human eye, or even a breast. It’s soon pierced by an injection, causing the yolk to split itself in two. This is, of course, the titular Substance being injected: an elixir that promises a younger, more beautiful alter ego, but only if you are willing to pay the price and inflict unspeakable violence on yourself.

Demi Moore is opening up about the high “intensity” of filming The Substance, her new body horror film directed by Coralie Fargeat.

The Feud star, who plays Elisabeth in the upcoming movie, revealed in a recent interview with the L.A. Times that she was diagnosed with shingles while on a break from filming one week.

“To give you an idea of the intensity, my first week that I actually had off, where it was just Margaret working, I got shingles,” Moore shared. “And I then lost, like, 20 pounds.”

Shingles is a “painful rash illness,” which can be contracted when “the varicella-zoster virus (Vzv), which causes chickenpox, reactivates in their bodies after they have already had chickenpox,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Yes, a movie called The Substance ironically doesn’t really have any, but that’s sort of the point. French provocateur Coralie Fargeat’s first English-language feature is a steaming cacophony of excess. A cathedral to broad, deliberately shallow camp horror that says the quiet part out loud over and over so many times, it might as well be beating you over the head and screaming it in your ear. Which, considering the scale of the visuals and sound design here, it kind of is. An experience that’ll turn both heads and stomachs in equal measure, and cause nothing but arguments across the discourse.

Because there’s no real doubt that The Substance is the most aggressively in-your-face film of the last decade. Even considering we’re in something of a golden-age of bad taste auteurs – giving them Academy Awards (Yorgos Lanthimos) and generous budgets (Fede Álvarez) – this is a lot.

Mubi is exactly the service for people who see Mysteries of Lisbon is streaming and ask “yes but what version?” Accordingly I’m excited that September brings the extended, miniseries cut of Raúl Ruiz’s late-career triumph, which arrives alongside the notable new release that is Zia Anger’s My First Film––here programmed in a “Millennial Meltdown” series alongside Sebastián Silva’s Rotting in the Sun and Martine Syms’s The African Desperate. Take special note of Marie-Claude Trielhou’s Simone Barbés, or Virtue, which has captured cinephile attention since its restoration, probably because it’s a great film that encapsulates so much of what you’d even want in a movie.

Now Fargeat is back with an “explosive feminist take on body horror” called The Substance, which stars Demi Moore (Ghost) and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Mubi has released the full trailer for their upcoming body horror film by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance. In an age where trailers arguably reveal far too much, the full trailer – which clocks in at just under 2 and a half minutes – leaves things deliciously mysterious.

The trailer starts with Dennis Quaid’s Harvey noisily chewing on shrimp as he unceremoniously informs Demi Moore’s Elisabeth Sparkle that she’s old to do her job as a celebrity fitness instructor. Elisabeth then decides to take advantage of the titular treatment which allows a younger, more perfect version of herself to take her place every other week as the two switch places every 7 days.
