Optimus Prime and Megatron put up a fight, but in the end, the robots were no match for everyone’s favorite bio-exorcist.
After an unusually close box office race, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” emerged victorious over newcomer “Transformers One” to retain the No. 1 spot for three consecutive weekends. The spooky Warner Bros. sequel added a strong $26 million from 4,172 theaters, bringing its tally to $225 million domestically and $329.7 million globally.
Meanwhile, “Transformers One” kicked off behind expectations with $25 million from 3,978 venues. It’s a meager start for Paramount and Hasbro’s animated movie, which cost $75 million and was targeting a start of $30 million to $40 million. It only brought in $14 million internationally for a worldwide total of $39 million. Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson lead the voice cast of “Transformers One,” the franchise’s first theatrical animated film since 1986’s “The Transformers: The Movie.” That film was a box office disappointment, though its...

While he is currently riding high tides of fame for his tremendous contribution to the Western genre, Kevin Costner is also incredibly famous for starring in some of the best action thrillers of all time. One of these – although critics would argue its being even considered anything close to good – was his 1990 thriller-action by Tony Scott, Revenge.

Though it was met with mixed reviews from both fans and critics and may not be regarded as one of Costner’s best pieces to date – except by his dedicated fanbase – the film felt like a darker version of the 1986 masterpiece Top Gun nonetheless. That’s not all; it even went ahead to inspire what is regarded as Quentin Tarantino’s best movie: 1993’s crime-romance True Romance.

In the opening few moments of The Substance, we’re given a potted history of the Hollywood Walk of Fame star for one Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) from shiny and new through to weathered, cracked and having fast food dropped on to it. Although this is not quite the precise metaphor for Elisabeth’s career, her star is very much about to fall as she is unceremoniously dumped from her popular exercise show on her fiftieth birthday, no less.
Network exec Harvey (Dennis Quaid) breaks the news – in between close-ups of him troughing handfuls of glistening seafood – to Elisabeth with the cheerful “Well, what are you gonna do?” attitude of so many dreadful men out there. He goes on to announce that the audience is looking for someone more lithe and far younger, despite the various traffic stopping billboards of his current superstar which pepper the city.

Plot: An aging actress (Demi Moore) is given access to “The Substance,” which, if injected, is supposed to give her access to a younger, perfect version of herself. However, the substance also had certain rules to follow, and when she violates them, disaster soon follows.
Review: The Substance was the unexpected toast of Cannes when it played there back in the spring. Critics hailed Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s maximalist take on body horror, with many praising the fearless lead performances from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. I went into it expecting a solid little horror satire, but I didn’t think I’d be watching the greatest body horror movie made since the heyday of David Cronenberg.
Fargeat’s movie offers Demi Moore one of her career’s best (and most grotesque) roles. She plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a one-time movie star who’s now best known for hosting a popular morning workout show.

The Star Wars franchise was built upon the core trio of Luke, Leia, and Han, played by Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford in the original trilogy. However, the franchise has expanded over the decades, exploring different eras of the galaxy far far away. As new storytelling opportunities have emerged, a potential series focusing on a young Princess Leia Organa could be created.
Actress Carrie Fisher played Princess Leia in Star Wars until her passing (Credit: The Last Jedi | Lucasfilm).
Assuming that such a series materializes sometime in the future, one Stranger Things star would be the perfect replacement for Carrie Fisher, who sadly passed away a few years ago. Here is who we think would be an ideal pick for taking over and continuing the legacy of Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise if Lucasfilm decided to produce a series focusing on the character’s younger days.

The Substance, French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s second film after her brutal directorial debut Revenge, has had a tumultuous road to the screen. After being developed at Universal, the movie made its way to Cannes as an acquisition title, where it made a massive splash, delighting and disgusting audiences. Although the visuals and performances in The Substance are impeccable, the bloated length and poor pacing keep the film from connecting as well as it should.
The Substance Review
The movie follows an aging, once-beloved celebrity in Hollywood who discovers what she thinks may be the opportunity of a lifetime: a black-market drug that allows her to temporarily create a better, younger version of herself. It’s an intriguing, creative premise that offers a feminist spin on a genre that is often dominated by male filmmakers and stories.

Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge follow-up gives Demi Moore the role of a lifetime. Here’s our The Substance review.
Coralie Fargeat’s 2017 rape-revenge film Revenge was a thrillingly bloody affair, so expectations were high for the director’s next project. Thankfully, she has not only met, but exceeded them all with The Substance, a shocking, darkly hilarious body horror.
Demi Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a TV fitness instructor, fired from her job on her 50th birthday. Devastated, Elisabeth turns to a secretive lab that offers her a new treatment: The Substance. The treatment will create a “younger, more beautiful, more perfect” version of Elisabeth, but there’s a catch. Elisabeth and her other self, Sue (Margaret Qualley), have to take turns in living their lives; while one is out in the world for a week, the other lies on the bathroom floor, hooked up to a feeding tube.

Desire, audacity, and revulsion dominate Coralie Fargeat's The Substance. No fuss, it's a primetime body-horror banger. Shades of Paul Verhoeven, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Frank Henenlotter blend into a monstrously chic showbusiness roast session. Fargeat's weaponization of the male gaze becomes a biting commentary that sizzles, smolders, and shimmers with magnificent ickiness. The Substance punches exponentially harder than you're ready for, as Fargeat charges guns-blazing into territories contemporary horror seems hesitant to embrace (or return to).
Demi Moore throws herself into the agonizing existential demise of Elisabeth Sparkle, a celebrity aerobics icon aging out of the spotlight on her 50th birthday. Station bigwig Harvey (Dennis Quaid) demands a younger, hotter host — he fires Elisabeth on her birthday. Distraught, the discarded pop-culture figure finds herself watching a promotional video advertising an underground serum called "The Substance." Coralie Fargeat has always zigged where others zagged. But knowing what she did and did not want to do helped her to focus her goals. She grew up in Paris on a diet of American movies, which built her taste for genre films. As a teenager, she shot “Star Wars” remakes with her little camera in her backyard.
“The ones that were resonating with me that were going out of the real world, out of reality, were more English-speaking genre films,” she told IndieWire at the Toronto International Film Festival, where her Cannes body horror breakout “The Substance,” her second feature starring Demi Moore as an actress fighting her age with radical chemistry, won the screenwriting prize at Cannes and the TIFF People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award.

We’re halfway through September, and while “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has been the big winner of the month so far, we have a new potential fall blockbuster this weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Paramount Pictures has done quite well with Hasbro’s flagship Transformers toy line, to the tune of $5.3 billion worldwide, mostly thanks to the five movies directed by Michael Bay. Now, they’re returning to the animated realm that kicked the whole thing off in the ’80s with “Transformers One,” a prequel movie that explores the origins of the Autobots and Decepticons with Oscar-winning filmmaker Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”).
For this one, the filmmakers have put together a really impressive voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm, Keegan-Michael Key and Laurence Fishburne. Hemsworth voices the earlier version of Optimus Prime, Henry voices Megatron, and Key voices the younger Bumblebee,...

In Coralie Fargeat’s body horror shocker The Substance, Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister who is unceremoniously fired from her fitness TV show by a loathsome studio boss, played by Dennis Quaid. Feeling defeated, Sparkle can’t resist the draw of an experimental new drug called that promises to reveal a younger and even better version of herself.
If you’ve seen the trailer, then you know what happens next: Sparkle takes the leap, injects herself with the mysterious liquid and literally births the new and improved Elizabeth Sparkle — known as Sue and played by Margaret Qualley — out of her spinal cord. The only rule for the body swap is that they must spend one week in one body and one week in the other with no exceptions. Needless to say, drama and shocks unfold in quick succession.

Who needs subtly when you've got "The Substance," Coralie Fargeat's delightfully bonkers body horror masterpiece? To quote "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace," "I know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards, every one of them." With "The Substance," Fargeat, who helmed the excellent, brutal, bubble-gum-colored thrillride that was "Revenge," has crafted a overstuffed, bonkers, blood-soaked saga about women and the hell they're put through all in the name of modern beauty standards. Fargeat's script is about as unsubtle as they come — every scene is loaded with unmistakable, obvious, impossible-to-miss meaning. And yet, this isn't a hindrance to the film. If anything, it just makes the movie all the more endearing. It's equal parts horrific and hilarious.

Demi Moore is making waves with her return to the big screen in Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, a provocative new film that captivated audiences at the Cannes Film Festival and earned an impressive 13-minute standing ovation. The film, which tackles themes of body horror, societal pressures, and the desire for self-perfection, will be released in UK cinemas on 20th September.
Directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, known for her 2018 revenge thriller Revenge, The Substance centres on a revolutionary product that promises to create a younger, “perfected” version of oneself. However, the catch is both versions must share equal time, raising eerie questions about identity, vanity, and what it means to truly exist in a society obsessed with perfection. Moore takes on the lead role of Elizabeth Sparkle, a once-iconic TV aerobics host who has been sidelined due to her age. Desperate to reclaim her former glory, she turns to The Substance,...

Writer-and-director Coralie Fargeat’s viscera-splattered follow-up to 2017’s Revenge is about as subtle as a bludgeon to the head, or, indeed, a needle to the thigh. Thankfully, it’s also much more perversely enjoyable than either of those experiences. Just as long as you’re not squeamish at the sight of blood, cascades of organs and the most grotesque prosthetic creations since 1989’s Society.
The first shot of this intensely squishy film is of a raw egg that, removed from context, is reminiscent of a disembodied human eye, or even a breast. It’s soon pierced by an injection, causing the yolk to split itself in two. This is, of course, the titular Substance being injected: an elixir that promises a younger, more beautiful alter ego, but only if you are willing to pay the price and inflict unspeakable violence on yourself.

The Star Wars universe is filled with unique stories and interconnected plot points spanning centuries of lore and narrative. The space opera saga launched by George Lucas mainly focused on the tragic downfall and eventual redemption of Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader. However, it has since expanded into several different avenues.
Star Wars needs a What If…?-like series (Credit: Lucasfilm).
The franchise has thrived on supplementary media outside the mainline Skywalker saga movies, fleshing out the arcs of several side characters. As a result, every choice, and every event is consequential in the grand scheme of things. It's been quite a while since we had any official updates on Millennium Films' Red Sonja reboot, but the movie's Instagram page has now shared a new behind-the-scenes photo of Revenge star Matilda Lutz as the She-Devil with a Sword.
As you can see, Lutz's armour is pretty faithful to the later comic book depictions of the character (the skimpy chain-mail bikini was never gonna happen), and she also appears to be sporting Sonja's signature face-paint.
After over a decade spent attempting to get the project moving with multiple writers and directors attached at various different stages, Millennium finally managed to put its Red Sonja reboot into production in 2022, with Solomon Kane director M.J. Bassett at the helm and Lutz taking over from Ant-Man and the Wasp and Thunderbolts* actress Hannah John Kamen as the fearsome warrior of the title.

At the dawn of video gaming in the early Seventies, there was one name that dominated the scene: Atari. For years, the house that Pong built was synonymous with the arcade scene and home consoles, but like many of the biggest players from the old days not named Nintendo, the Atari of today is mostly just a memory. But for all the rosy recollection of games like Space Invaders (1980) and Pac-Man (1982), the biggest first-party title for the company — as in not licensed from an existing arcade hit — is one you may not even know.

Writer/Director Coralie Fargeat set the bar high for herself in 2017, with her debut feature Revenge delivering a visceral, feminine twist to the rape-revenge thriller that climaxed in an epic bloodbath. So much that it seemed nearly impossible to top. Yet the filmmaker does just that with sophomore effort The Substance, transforming a familiar concept into something so entertaining and grotesquely over the top that it keeps you firmly in its grip until an epic, grand guignol finish.

Demi Moore is opening up about the high “intensity” of filming The Substance, her new body horror film directed by Coralie Fargeat.
The Feud star, who plays Elisabeth in the upcoming movie, revealed in a recent interview with the L.A. Times that she was diagnosed with shingles while on a break from filming one week.
“To give you an idea of the intensity, my first week that I actually had off, where it was just Margaret working, I got shingles,” Moore shared. “And I then lost, like, 20 pounds.”
Shingles is a “painful rash illness,” which can be contracted when “the varicella-zoster virus (Vzv), which causes chickenpox, reactivates in their bodies after they have already had chickenpox,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Her co-star, Margaret Qualley, who plays Sue, also faced her own challenges throughout production given the film’s weight. “Oh, yeah, I had crazy acne for a full,...

Yes, a movie called The Substance ironically doesn’t really have any, but that’s sort of the point. French provocateur Coralie Fargeat’s first English-language feature is a steaming cacophony of excess. A cathedral to broad, deliberately shallow camp horror that says the quiet part out loud over and over so many times, it might as well be beating you over the head and screaming it in your ear. Which, considering the scale of the visuals and sound design here, it kind of is. An experience that’ll turn both heads and stomachs in equal measure, and cause nothing but arguments across the discourse.
Because there’s no real doubt that The Substance is the most aggressively in-your-face film of the last decade. Even considering we’re in something of a golden-age of bad taste auteurs – giving them Academy Awards (Yorgos Lanthimos) and generous budgets (Fede Álvarez) – this is a lot.

Mubi is exactly the service for people who see Mysteries of Lisbon is streaming and ask “yes but what version?” Accordingly I’m excited that September brings the extended, miniseries cut of Raúl Ruiz’s late-career triumph, which arrives alongside the notable new release that is Zia Anger’s My First Film––here programmed in a “Millennial Meltdown” series alongside Sebastián Silva’s Rotting in the Sun and Martine Syms’s The African Desperate. Take special note of Marie-Claude Trielhou’s Simone Barbés, or Virtue, which has captured cinephile attention since its restoration, probably because it’s a great film that encapsulates so much of what you’d even want in a movie.
Meanwhile, Tarsem’s 4K restoration (and slightly adjusted cut) of 2006’s The Fall makes its streaming premiere; there’s opportunity to catch up with Coralie Fargeat ahead of The Substance; recent releases Riddle of Fire and Geoff...

Welcome to The Best Movie You Never Saw, a column dedicated to examining films that have flown under the radar or gained traction throughout the years, earning them a place as a cult classic or underrated gem that was either before it’s time and/or has aged like a fine wine.
With this article, we’re taking a look back at the 1990 thriller Revenge, which was directed by the late, great Tony Scott. Since today – August 19th – marks the anniversary of Scott’s death, we felt this would be an appropriate time to dig into one of his lesser known films, and Revenge fits the bill, even though Quentin Tarantino (who wrote the Scott classic True Romance) has referred to this one as Scott’s masterpiece.

The Substance, a new horror film from French director Coralie Fargeat that received rave reviews after premiering at Cannes Film Festival this year, has released its first trailer. The film arrives in theaters on September 20th.
Demi Moore stars as Elizabeth Sparkle, an established actress whose career is declining; bigwig studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid) reminds her of such over a grotesque-looking lunch meeting. She opts to try a new drug that promises a “better version” of herself that will make her “younger and more beautiful,” and upon injecting it, she assumes the body of a young woman named Sue (Margaret Qualley). However, after enjoying the newfound attention, Elizabeth begins to spiral as she notes a “slight misuse of the substance” and descends into some body horror madness.

Seven years have gone by since director Coralie Fargeat made her feature directorial debut with a very cool revenge movie that was appropriately titled Revenge – you can read our 8/10 review of the film at This Link. Now Fargeat is back with an “explosive feminist take on body horror” called The Substance, which stars Demi Moore (Ghost) and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). The film is set to be released on September 20th, and with that date just one month away, a new trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
The film is said to be gory, but also humorous. Here’s the official synopsis: It generates another you. A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect you. And there’s only one rule: You share time. One week for you. One week for the new you. Seven days each. A perfect balance.

By all accounts, “The Substance” is one of the year’s most deliciously f*cked up movies. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, the French filmmaker behind the striking rape vengeance thriller, “Revenge,” she returns to confront aging in women and the way society treats women in an audacious cosmetic body horror called “The Substance.”
The film centers on an aging star, played by Demi Moore, who is forced out of her lucrative on-tv aerobics instructor career by her vile and disgusting boss (Dennis Quaid).

Margaret Qualley is still keeping it weird: While she appeared in “Poor Things” as a science experiment gone wrong, Qualley is now literally shedding her skin for the co-lead role in the body horror film “The Substance.” It’s already the most talked about thriller of the year.
Qualley stars as the younger version of Demi Moore’s aging actress in the buzzy feature from writer/director Coralie Fargeat. “The Substance” debuted at Cannes 2024, where IndieWire’s David Ehrlich deemed it an “instant classic” and first reactions applauded its feminist message. The film, which won Best Screenplay at Cannes, will have its North American premiere at TIFF 2024, opening the Midnight Madness section.

Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s next film is all about Hollywood’s toxic beauty standards. Here’s the full The Substance trailer.
Mubi has released the full trailer for their upcoming body horror film by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance. In an age where trailers arguably reveal far too much, the full trailer – which clocks in at just under 2 and a half minutes – leaves things deliciously mysterious.
The trailer starts with Dennis Quaid’s Harvey noisily chewing on shrimp as he unceremoniously informs Demi Moore’s Elisabeth Sparkle that she’s old to do her job as a celebrity fitness instructor. Elisabeth then decides to take advantage of the titular treatment which allows a younger, more perfect version of herself to take her place every other week as the two switch places every 7 days.
As the trailer shows, it doesn’t go very well.
Take a look at the new trailer below.

It may not be easy to stream these days, but whether you've seen it or not, "Maude" remains an important cornerstone of the sitcom house Norman Lear built. Premiering in 1972, "Maude" was originally conceived as a spinoff to the ever-in-the-zeitgeist sitcom "All in the Family," but it soon took on a life of its own. The show starred a pre-"Golden Girls" Bea Arthur as Maude Findlay, an outspoken, well-to-do liberal feminist with a knack for telling everyone around her what's what.
Maude was also a middle-aged woman, a reality that was never more apparent than in the show's most famous, controversial episode. The 1972 two-parter "Maude's Dilemma" saw Maude contemplate –- and ultimately choose –- abortion after finding herself pregnant in her late '40s. Released before the establishment of Roe vs. Wade, "Maude's Dilemma" was a lightning rod for heated conversations about reproductive rights, and remains an enduring part of the show's legacy today.
