The After Dark Horrorfest was a game-changer back when it premiered in 2006. Not only was this film festival devoted to the horror genre, it was accessible. Founder Courtney Solomon (An American Haunting) chose the best possible venue for this “ultimate celebration of horror”: the big screen. So from November 17 to 21, these hand-picked titles were shown at select theaters across the U.S.
There have been four “sequels” to the After Dark Horrorfest since then, but for many horror hounds like myself, the original one is a bit more meaningful. It was an exciting time for discovery, developing one’s own taste, and for learning what the genre had to offer in the non-mainstream sector.
So in honor of this momentous film fest, we look back at the first “8 Films to Die For”.

While the name Travis Stevens may not be familiar to horror fans, the films he’s shepherded over the last several years should: A Horrible Way to Die, Little Deaths, The Aggression Scale, The Thompsons, Big Ass Spider!, Cheap Thrills, Jodorowsky’s Dune, Starry Eyes, and the upcoming feature, We Are Still Here, which debuted at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival.
As a producer over a relatively short amount of time, Stevens has made a huge impact on the horror genre and still works tirelessly to bring engaging and unique independent projects to life. We recently chatted with Stevens about his background, his approach to producing, the state of independent horror and the one thing he recommends to aspiring filmmakers.
Thanks for speaking with me, Travis. You have done such an amazing job throughout your career finding interesting and thought-provoking films to work on that also feel different from each other.

I hear a lot of casual horror fans talking about the lack of quality horror films in recent years... and to some extent they have a point. Studio-funded horror films seem to be less prevalent than they were three decades ago, and many mass-marketed horror films are lighter on gore, nudity, and the like than the features of yesteryear (with the obvious exception of the Evil Dead reboot). But there are still plenty of quality horror films being made – it’s just incumbent upon horror fans to look a little harder. There are a plethora of well-made horror pictures being released every year; they just aren’t all getting the mainstream attention that they deserve. In an attempt to remedy that, and shine the spotlight on some outstanding films that haven’t received a great deal of publicity, we are showcasing five titles from the past five years that may have passed you by,...

Just a few weeks ago, Mitchell Altieri's (one half of The Butcher Brothers) Holy Ghost People (review) celebrated its world premiere at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival.
Starring Emma Greenwell, Joe Egender, Brendan McCarthy, Cameron Richardson and Don Harvey, Holy Ghost People follows a young girl named Charlotte (Greenwell) who enlists the help of an ex-Marine (McCarthy) in locating her missing sister, who last contacted her while living on a religious compound tucked away in the Appalachian Mountains.
Holy Ghost People was co-written by Altieri, Phil Flores (the other half of The Butcher Brothers), Egender and Kevin Artigue. Dread Central recently chatted with both Altieri and Flores about their latest collaboration and their experiences working with their cast in the mountains of Tennessee. The duo also discussed their next feature project, Raised by Wolves, which is currently being wrapped up in post-production.

It was only a matter of time before the filmmaking team known as "The Butcher Brothers" would drop the slightly silly moniker and start crediting themselves as normal guys, and it only seems fitting that Mitch Altieri and Phil Flores would choose to do it with a film like Holy Ghost People. The duo has shown some skill and (better yet) improvement with each successive movie -- The Hamiltons, The Violent Kind, The Thompsons (and yes I left out April Fools Day to be kind) -- but their latest is easily their most complete, cohesive, and compelling thriller yet.
The simple gritty film works as both a dramatic piece and a thriller at the same time, and tonally it seems to borrow a little from the early indie films of David Gordon Green, which is meant as a compliment to all involved. At its best moments Holy Ghost People provides...

Usually known as one half of horror duo The Butcher Brothers (along with filmmaker Phil Flores), Mitchell Altieri comes to Austin with his new slow burning drama "Holy Ghost People," set among the snake handling churches of the Appalachian Mountains. What it's about: "Holy Ghost People" is about absolute faith -- the strength it can bring and the evil it can inspire. About the filmmaker: I started film-making at a young age. I was inspired by offbeat films like Over The Edge, The Wanderers and anything David Lynch. This is my first venture outside the horror genre in a handful of years. I didn't start in horror but always loved dark stories. After shooting my last film "The Thompsons" in the UK, I wanted to get back to my roots and tell a gritty, American tale. "Holy Ghost People"was that story I wanted to tell. It plays like an old Southern Gothic novel.

Let’s face it… vampires have been done to death. Whether it’s the hundreds of Dracula films, the Twilight franchise or True Blood and The Vampire Diaries on TV, the fanged ones have had their time in the sun. Back in 2006, the independent feature titled The Hamiltons was released as part of the After Dark Horror Festival.
Having watched almost every entry in the After Dark series up to that point, I wasn’t expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. Now some six years later, directors “The Butcher Brothers” (Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores) have returned with most of the first film’s cast to give us The Thompsons, the sequel to The Hamiltons.
Picking up after a particularly unpleasant event between the two films (dramatized here for exposition), The Hamiltons have changed their name yet again, to The Thompsons and leave for England fleeing the law.

A sequel to The Hamiltons, The Thompsons is an indie horror film directed by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores aka the Butcher Brothers, which premiered at the London FrightFest Film Festival on August 26th, 2012.
We have an exclusive clip if you’re interested learning more about a sequel to 2006s fugitive vampire clan movie, which is being described as ‘Twilight meets Tarantino’.
Now available on DVD and Blu-ray, a movie about pretty teenage vampires stars Corey Knauf, Samuel Child, Joseph McKelheer, Mackenzie Firgens, Ryan Hartwig, Elizabeth Henstridge, Sean Browne, and Tim Holloway.
The effects are a mixture of practical and digital and have been upgraded from the original. However, the action sequences are still very unrealistic, as well as the fight scenes were poorly put together.

I may have been a little too tough on the 2007 indie vampire flick The Hamiltons. Reviewing it for another website, I said this: "Feeling more like an angsty indie drama than any sort of horrific piece of cinema, the movie is jam-packed with all the things that make 'homemade' movies so irritating: Clumsy screenwriting, wooden acting, and a sense of self-importance run rampant throughout The Hamiltons. Not even the few moments of grim humor and bloodletting can salvage the flick's leaden pacing and overbaked narrative."
Yikes. Pretty rough. And then once co-directors Mitch Altieri and Phil Flores presented us with April Fools Day (2008) and The Violent Kind (2010), I figured I would just leave the "Butcher Brothers" to their fans and focus on indie horror films I actually enjoyed. So here's some good news for all involved: The Thompsons (aka The Hamiltons Part 2, although you need not have seen (or liked!

It’s a Marvel news kind of day (it took a lot of willpower to avoid saying it was a Marvel-ous news day), with Whedon chatting about Avengers and now some updates on Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D.
The show is expected to begin filming next month, January of 2013, and the cast is almost all there. Jeph Loeb, Marvel TV’s head honcho, says that it could be happening as soon as next fall: “Well…we have a ‘little’ pilot for television that you might have heard about called Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. co-written, directed, and Executive Produced by none other than Joss Whedon! Working with Joss, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell on the show is a blast! And bringing in Clark Gregg to play Agent Phil Coulson — the best! Hopefully we will be on in the Fall of 2013 on ABC!“
Clark Gregg is the big draw, but he joins a cast...

Directors/writers: The Butcher Brothers (Mitchell Altieri, Phil Flores). Cast: Cory Knauf, Samuel Child, Elizabeth Henstridge, Daniel O'Meara, Mackenzie Firgens, Ryan Hartwig, Sean Browne, Tom Holloway, Joseph McKelheer, and Selina Giles. The Thompsons is a sequel to the 2006 film The Hamiltons. Both films deal with a vampire clan in search of ever more blood to drink. This reviewer is unfamiliar with the first film, but this second title can be seen on its own. Centrally, The Thompsons is a story of Francis (Cory Knauf). His voice over narration guides the story from the United States over to the United Kingdom. His journey is full of violence with his brothers and sisters looking for aid for the fallen Lenny (Ryan Hartwig). They do not find help, but they do find a malevolent vampire clan bent on destroying them. The Butcher Brothers (Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores) have created a fantastic tale...
