John Stamos mourns the death of his longtime friend, Paula Haynes.
The Full House star took to Facebook on Friday to share a lengthy post about his "dearest, most important and most inspiring friends" who died the day before.
"I told an associate of mine that one of my dearest, most important and most inspiring friends had passed away yesterday. And he said, 'So sorry, life can be crappy,'" Stamos wrote alongside two pictures of the two of them. "But life wasn’t crappy to the person I called 'Girlfriend' and who called me 'Boyfriend' - Paula Haynes. Miss Paula Haynes, I also called her. Sure, she was dealt a tough hand at birth -- but in life, she made the very most of that hand and lived more than most of us. We met over 30 years ago - June, 1986. (I know this cause she’d remind me every year)."

The 54-year-old actor posted a touching eulogy on Facebooks, calling Haynes “one of my dearest, most important and most inspiring friends” and “one of my favorite people ever.”
Haynes, who had disabilities, may have “dealt a tough hand at birth,” Stamos said, but in life, “she made the very most of that hand and lived more than most of us.”

Legend has it that the Coen Brothers penned this dark satire back in the 1980s, around the time of Blood Simple. So it’s interesting the extent to which Suburbicon feels like a product of our time – that is, a reflection of Us anxieties about race, immigration and social cohesion.
The film’s title refers to a fictional, yet depressingly plausible, 1950s experiment: a 60,000-strong utopian community comprised purely of white people, content and complacent behind a bulwark of quaint picket fences. (The faux promo which opens the film is like something out of a Fallout game.) We join the story at the moment when the first African-American family, the Myers, moves into the neighbourhood.
Suburbicon rapidly descends into criminality. But it’s nothing to do with the Myers.

George Clooney is returning to television. The former E.R. star will be directing and starring in a limited series based on Joseph Keller's satirical World War II novel Catch-22.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Catch-22 will be written by Luke Davies (Lion) and David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) and will run for six episodes. It's a joint venture of Paramount Television and Anonymous (who also collaborated on 13 Reasons Why and Berlin Station), but the project does not have a network yet. THR reports the series will be shopped to prospective outlets in December.

George Clooney hasn’t acted in a film since 2016, and in a interview with The Sunday Times, the 56-year-old actor admitted that it isn’t a priority for him anymore — because he doesn’t need the money.
“Look, I acted for a long time and, you know, I’m 56. I’m not the guy that gets the girl anymore,” he said, before adding that at least he “shouldn’t be the guy that gets the girl.”
The father of two continued, “But, look, if somebody’s got Paul Newman in The Verdict, I’d jump. But there aren’t that many like that.

Some viewers are expressing outrage about a Stranger Things costume that they are deeming too “sexy.”

Ahead of Halloween and the series’ second season, which dropped Friday on Netflix, online retailer Yandy.com listed an adult version of the costume for sale.

Ah, awards season; are we back at that special time of year already? As 2017 starts to wrap up, the major studios are getting their prestige titles prepped and ready to go, hoping to lure in both strong box office and, more importantly, critical/awards recognition. But there’s always a few titles that fall below expectations. And then there are the titles that really fall below expectations. One that’s already hit that point is Suburbicon – directed by George Clooney, primarily written by the Coen Brothers and starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac – and its disappointments are especially staggering. But what is it in this specific film that betrays such a sharp concept?
As a colorful film strip, featuring one of composer Alexandre Desplat’s manipulatively playful contributions that further establishes him as one of music’s best living composers, that opens the film declares, the titular Suburbicon,...

Like those talented pop singers who keep making valiant stabs at being actors — and vice versa — George Clooney can’t seem to stay away from the director’s chair. His filmmaking career started promisingly enough with “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (helped greatly by its Charlie Kaufman screenplay), but since then it’s been a parade of adequacies (“Good Night, and Good Luck,” “The Ides of March”), mediocrity (“Leatherheads”) and downright catastrophe (“The Monuments Men”). Clooney’s directorial legacy won’t get any help from “Suburbicon,” a garish and overblown crime melodrama that combines clumsy noir with lame jabs at 1950s suburban conformity.

This one today is the major Oscar hopeful Suburbicon, coming to us as the latest directorial outing from George Clooney. Not only is Clooney teamed up with his partner Grant Heslov for this one, he also is working off of a script that the Coen Brothers once penned with an eye towards directing. You’ll be able to see this Trailer below, but first, you know the drill here…some discussion is in order. The film is a pitch black crime comedy of sorts. So far, the description for it is simply that a home invasion rattles a quiet family town. The town is the town of Suburbicon, and Gardner (Matt Damon) is a father and husband drawn...

In the Bourne series of spy movies, Matt Damon was furious but contained and in control. Now in the first trailer for Suburbicon, he looks furious but almost completely out of control in 1950's suburbia. If the somewhat crazed trailer -- in a good way! -- looks and sounds reminiscent of movies by the Coen Brothers, that's no coincidence. They originally wrote the script early in their careers. George Clooney directed and adds his own visual flourishes, as he's done before in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Good Night, and Good Luck and The Monuments Men. Watch the trailer below. Earlier this year, our own Erik Davis talked with Clooney and costar Julianne Moore about the challenges involved in adapting a script written by the Coen...

Believe it or not, we’re already at the point in the year where fall film festival announcements are being made. Yesterday afternoon, the first shot across the bow was fired when the New York Film Festival announced Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying as it’s Opening Night Selection. Getting a bit of a head start on things, Nyff is planting a flag, no pun intended, on this flick as an awards vehicle. Linklater nearly took home an Oscar for Boyhood, so he’s certainly due. Could this do it for him? Time will tell, but getting this prestigious slot at Nyff is a strong first step. There’s plenty of reason to be excited for this one. This film is a road trip tale, working as a sort of pseudo sequel to the classic The Last Detail. In the press release, Film Society described it thusly: “In Richard Linklater’s lyrical road movie,...

Spine-tingling suspense is supposed to leave you breathless, uncertain of what's coming next.
Bates Motel Season 5 Episode 3 achieved that over and over again, as an insane game of cat and mouse began with Chick holding the cheese, urging Norman and Mother to make moves they'd find difficult without his presence.
If only we could leap onto one of the many time machines currently available on the telly to find out what in Hades is coming next.
I don't know what your thoughts were after watching, but here were mine:
Did that really happen? What just happened? I want more! Oh my God!!!
The action felt so intimate not only in that few characters were involved, but the material was moving beyond measure.
Reactions were all over the map, from being overjoyed at seeing Caleb alive, to wonder at how Chick was manipulating the situation with Norman's insanity so brilliantly,...

Just because a movie or a celebrity wins an Oscar, that doesn't mean the win was deserved. While the Academy Awards are seen as the capstone to awards season -- and one of the highest honors in the business -- we all know that stars and movies get snubbed or overlooked all the time.
What's worse is when we look back at what did win, and shake our heads in confusion and disbelief. So, with the 89th Academy Awards just around the corner, let's take a look back over the show's illustrious history at a few times the Academy voters clearly made a mistake.

Over the last five years, the Syrian Civil Defense — better known as the White Helmets — are estimated to have saved 70,000 victims of the country’s devastating civil war. The volunteers have also lost more than 150 of their own, a struggle captured in the Netflix documentary “The White Helmets.” Their story will be told in another form, reports Deadline, as George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures will develop a narrative based on Orlando von Einsiedel’s film.

This year featured two feature-length adaptations of Philip Roth novels. One was James Schamus’ “Indignation,” based on Roth’s 2008 novel, while the other was Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut “American Pastoral,” based on Roth’s 1997 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
The film starred McGregor himself as Seymour “Swede” Levov, a former high school athlete turned successful businessman with a beauty queen (Jennifer Connelly) as a wife. But when their politically radical daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) is accused of a violent crime, Swede is forced to make sense of the chaos that is his life. It also stars Rupert Evans (“The Man in the High Castle”), Valorie Curry (“Veronica Mars”), David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck”) and Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”). Because 2016 cares not for subtlety, this month marks the 40th anniversary of “Network.” Since its release in November 1976 to wide praise and an eventual heap of Oscars, director Sidney Lumet and writer Paddy Chayefsky’s excoriation of the exponentially money-driven, bottom-feeding tendencies of television news has only grown in renown, as each angry pundit updates the film’s library of prophecies about The State of Television Today.
With the ascent of an actual reality TV star to the U.S. Presidency following a broadcast news cycle that worked for everything but a dedication to public interest, it would seem that this depressing political season has reached the logical end of the film’s apocalyptic forecast, landing on a reality too absurd for even “Network” to dramatize: Howard Beale as President. However, as we reflect on what’s gone wrong with contemporary news media and political culture, it’s important to...

"This film should be played loud!" It's a cliché now, a concert-movie disclaimer that's become the equivalent of that hippie-dippy tagline from those Freedom Rock compilation ads ("Well, turn it up, maaaaan.") But in the late Seventies, when it first flashed onscreen in all white font against a stark black background before the credits of The Last Waltz, you knew it meant business. Keep moving that volume knob clockwise, folks. Let the needle swing into the red.

Stephen Colbert’s election-night Showtime special, “Who’s Going To Clean Up This Sh*t?”, provided an unwieldy subtitle for a humorless situation. It was a bewildering attempt at comedy, and even more depressing for those in the studio. Sitting with my partner in the audience at the Ed Sullivan Theater, the wannabe fun ride felt more like being trapped in an escape room without the proper key.
Liberated from the censorship constraints of his late-night CBS show, Colbert could swear as much as he wanted, but no language was extreme enough to convey the audience’s despair. In his Comedy Central days, Colbert excelled at transforming the inane means by which fear and anger mangle logic by coining the term truthiness, the tendency for something to seem right even if it fell short of the truth. At the Showtime taping, the prevailing mood was funereal uncertainty that felt wrong — and yet,...

The small cable channel shuts down on Monday, ending its short life with the film “Good Night, and Good Luck,” the 2005 movie about Edward R. Murrow produced by Pivot owner Participant Media.
The movie’s title is an appropriate farewell for Pivot, and perhaps also serves as a message for the cable industry in general – as more networks face an uncertain future in the wake of so-called “skinny bundles” (cable packages with fewer channels) and the growth of cord-cutting.
