‘Cross’ Creator Ben Watkins Says It Was a ‘Concerted Effort’ to Make Shannon More Than ‘Just a Victim’
Image
“Cross” creator Ben Watkins said the writers room was unwavering in their mission to ensure the role of Shannon Witmer (Eloisde Mumford) wasn’t merely a “damsel in distress” trope often seen in Hollywood films and TV series, adding that she was written to be more than just Ed Ramsey’s (Ryan Eggold) latest victim.

“We really made a concerted effort to do something that a lot of shows don’t do,” Watkins, who also serves as the showrunner and executive producer of “Cross,” told TheWrap. “They choose a target, it’s a woman, and then that woman is just a victim. And for us, we had to choose somebody and make them a real character, and her name was Shannon. Even though she was under duress, she never gave up. We gave her a backstory and gave her a whole life in the world and and we were really...

‘Cross’ Star Samantha Walkes Previews Season 2 Stepmom Challenges
Image
There’s a lot of turmoil ahead in Cross‘ second season at Prime Video, according to its stars. Isaiah Mustafa warned us that what we know about the characters will be turned on its head, and Ryan Eggold played coy about whether the Fanboy Killer’s spree is truly over. Now, there’s a new (albeit less deadly) wrinkle to worry about: the new Cross family dynamic at hand in Season 2. Yes, after Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) finally decided to work to heal from the murder death of his wife, he seemed ready to move on in a real way with his new love Elle (Samantha Walkes). But is she ready for all that will entail? According to Samantha Walkes herself, Elle will face some struggles with becoming a stepmother figure to Alex’s two children. “It’s a world that was created before her and previous to that, and...

'Cross' Star Reveals How Christian Bale's 'American Psycho' Character Inspired His Serial Killer
Image
When we are first introduced to Ryan Eggold’s character of Ed Ramsey in Episode 1 of the Prime Video hit Cross, the first thing that sticks out is his perfectly coiffed blonde hair. It’s a stark contrast to the look he sported on the NBC medical drama New Amsterdam, and you’d be forgiven if you think he modeled it after rapper Eminem. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth according to the star, who says he was inspired by a horror icon when crafting the style of his serial killer character.

Speaking with The Wrap, Eggold said he gets asked all the time about the Eminem resemblance, but denies that the megastar had any influence on how he presents himself in Cross. "Lately people were like, 'Were you doing an Eminem thing?' I’m like, 'What? No, he’s a killer. No,'" he told the outlet.

Dragomir Mrsic in Alex (2017)
Aldis Hodge as Alex Cross in Prime Vide’s Cross Season 1: “The things that we don’t get an answer to… that’s intentional.”
Dragomir Mrsic in Alex (2017)
Spoiler Warning: This article contains details about Season 1 of Alex Cross*. If you haven’t watched yet, proceed at your own risk!*

When a show throws two huge mysteries at you in just eight episodes, you’d think it would get messy. But Alex Cross? It pulls it off like a pro. From solving the murder of Cross’ wife Maria to tracking down the terrifying “Fanboy” killer, the show gives you double the suspense without ever losing its grip. It’s a bold move, and even Aldis Hodge, who stars as Alex Cross, had his doubts at first.

“That’s something that I noticed early on, and I questioned,” Hodge admitted. “I was like, I wonder how they’re going to balance this out, because you get a lot in eight episodes. It is jam-packed with story.”

And packed it is. The show flips back and forth between two intense...

Cross Season 1's Disturbing Horror Scene Provides A Terrifying Rival To Dustin Hoffman's Controversial 48-Year-Old Thriller Movie
Image
Warning: Major spoilers for Cross season 1 below! The fourth episode of Cross features a scene of dental horror that is sure to give fans of a controversial Dustin Hoffman movie traumatic flashbacks. Prime Video's Cross cast Aldis Hodge as the title detective, who is chasing after a twisted serial killer dubbed "The Fanboy" (Ryan Eggold). What makes Cross interesting is that it takes the characters from the James Patterson bestselling Alex Cross novels - but doesn't actually adapt any of them (via TVLine). This means Eggold's villain is unique to the series, with Ed Ramsey/The Fanboy being almost on the same intellectual level as Alex Cross himself.

Many episodes follow Ramsey as he painstakingly transforms his latest kidnap victim Shannon (Eloise Mumford) into real-life killer Aileen Wuornos. This includes changing her hair color and skin complexion and even altering her teeth. The Fanboy believes this is a great artistic endeavor,...

Is Cross Season 1's The Fanboy Based On A Real Serial Killer? Inspirations Explained
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Cross season 1.

Warning! This article contains mentions of murder and many real-life serial killers.

Cross season 1 is based on James Patterson's fictional Alex Cross books, but it seems to draw some inspiration from real-world crimes. Created by Ben Watkins, Amazon's Cross does not shy away from drifting far from its source material's stories. Instead of staying true to nearly all story beats from the original novels, Cross season 1 only borrows character beats from the book while adopting a completely original narrative.

While this approach could have easily backfired for the series, it surprisingly works wonders and earned the show a "fresh" Rotten Tomatoes rating. Although some aspects of the story in Cross season 1 are too over the top, the show also tries to ground itself in more realism than its source by drawing subtle references to real-life crimes. Owing to this, one might...

Every Real-Life Serial Killer Referenced By The Fanboy Killer In Cross Season 1
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Cross season 1.

Warning! This article contains mentions of murder, sexual assault, and violent real-life crimes of several serial killers.

In Cross' eight-episode runtime, the central Fanboy Killer seems to draw references to many famous real-life serial killers, highlighting how much he admires them. Instead of maintaining an air of ambiguity surrounding its central killer's identity, Amazon Prime Video's Cross reveals who is in one of its opening episodes. The show portrays how the eccentric killer is obsessed with the lives and crimes of renowned serial killers and tries to make his victims look like the criminals he idolizes before murdering them.

As Alex Cross and his team learn more about the serial killer's long history of crimes, they, too, notice how much he looks up to some of the most notorious criminals to have ever lived. Owing to his obsession with serial killers, they call him the "Fanboy Killer.

Cross True Story: Who Aileen Wuornos Is & Why The Fanboy Killer Worships Her
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Cross season 1.

Warning! This article contains mentions of murder, sexual assault, and Aileen Wuornos' real-life violent crimes.

Cross includes real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in its fictional narrative, raising many questions about her crimes, prison sentence, and significance in the show's story. Based on James Patterson's Alex Cross books, Amazon Prime Video's Cross introduces an eccentric serial killer, dubbed the "Fanboy Killer," who makes his victims look like famous murderers before killing them. With this twisted ritual, he hopes to kill 12 victims and almost ends up reaching his goal.

After murdering 11 people, he targets a woman, Shannon, who he believes will look exactly like Aileen Wuornos with some minor changes to her appearance. However, to his dismay, his target is cut short when Alex Cross races against time and manages to save Shannon before it is too late. Since the Fanboy Killer manages...

Cross Season 2 Will Have A New Killer, Reveals Show Creator
Image
Warning: The following contains major Spoilers for Cross season 1!Cross show creator Ben Watkins teases the new killer to come in season 2. The series follows Aldis Hodge's titular detective, and sees him solving a series of murders on top of finding out who has been targeting his family. Prime Video has already given the show a green light for season 2, even before Cross became the best-reviewed version of the James Patterson character. With Ryan Eggold's Ed Ramsey, aka Fanboy, being put behind bars, and the truth behind his wife's murder coming into light, season 1 tied up the majority of its events neatly.

Cross show creator, Ben Watkins, confirms that season 2 will feature a new killer in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The show will follow the format of season 1, where each season will stand on its own by focusing on a new killer while building on the existing...

Cross season 1 ending explained: Who killed Alex's wife?
Image
There was a lot going on in the eight episodes of Cross season 1. None of the episodes disappointed, and neither did the outcomes of the storylines.

Caution: This post contains Spoilers for Cross season 1.

The first season brought us two murders/cases to get to the bottom of. The first was the murder of Alex Cross’s wife. The second was figuring out who the Fanboy Killer was.

By the halfway mark, Alex had already worked out who the Fanboy Killer was. He knew it was Ryan Eggold’s Ramsey, but he couldn’t prove it. As he would get closer, Ramsey would be steps ahead of it. Because of Ramsey, Cross lost his badge and reputation. That didn’t stop him from searching,...

Cross' Ryan Eggold & Eloise Mumford On "Delicate Nature" Of Season 1 Villain & Creating Powerful Survivor Character
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Ryan Eggold and Eloise Mumford are being sought after by one of literature's most iconic detectives for different reasons in Cross. Having first held down one of the lead roles in The CW's 90210 sequel show, Eggold subsequently found success starring in NBC's The Blacklist and co-leading its short-lived spinoff, Redemption, while also landing a major role in Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman around the same time. More recently, Eggold found acclaim leading the cast of the medical drama New Amsterdam, while also directing three episodes before it came to an end in 2023.

Much like Eggold, Mumford found early success in the world of television with her key roles in Fox's crime drama Lone Star and ABC's The River, a found-footage horror show from the creator of the Paranormal Activity franchise and produced by Jason Blum before Blumhouse fame. Since then, Mumford...

‘Sweetpea’ Star Ella Purnell Is Leaning Into the Coming-of-Rage Trend: ‘Female Empowerment Does Seem Threatening’ to Some People
Image
Ella Purnell is done hiding her own rage.

“In a climate where we’re just getting increasingly silenced, [women] have a lot to say, and the more you try to silence someone the louder, in my experience, you want to scream,” the “Yellowjackets” and “Fallout” actress told IndieWire.

So it makes sense that Purnell’s latest series — and her debut as an executive producer — is with “Sweetpea,” a show that is like the “female ‘Dexter’ meets ‘Fleabag,'” according to the star.

The Starz official series description bills the dark comedy as a “deviously twisted coming-of-rage story,” something that also resonants with Purnell. And while the “rage” emphasis has been made trendy from creatives such as Taylor Swift to Diablo Cody, “Sweetpea” puts a murderous twist on finding your voice.

Purnell plays Rhiannon Lewis, a woman whose life passes her by…that is, until she finds power in wielding an ax.

X-men '97: 5 Most Shocking Claims Made By Fired Showrunner Beau DeMayo In His OnlyFans Statement
Image
X-Men '97 remains one of Marvel Studios' most critically acclaimed projects and, as we're sure you're aware, Beau DeMayo was the man in charge of the Disney+ series.

He was fired shortly before the show's launch and, several months later, suggested it was because he'd shared some LGBTQ fan art. Marvel Studios quickly fired back and we soon started hearing about alleged inappropriate behaviour and sexual misconduct. Now, DeMayo is locked in a legal battle with Disney, the outcome of which is uncertain.

DeMayo recently shared a 30-minute video on his OnlyFans account - where he posts suggestive, non-nude images - revealing his side of the story...for the low, low price of $9.99. It's a strange move, especially when one of the allegations laid at his feet was sharing unsolicited photos with other creatives.

He denies all those claims, of course, and we've already shared a few insights from the...

“I would have been happy as a clam”: X-Men Writer’s Dream Casting for Storm Was Another Oscar Winning MCU Actress That Sadly Never Materialized
Image
The X-Men franchise has always had a special part in the hearts of fans of the superhero genre. Over the years, the mutants have become a symbol of inclusion, rightly so. The entire credit of bringing these fan-favorite comic characters to life goes to none other than filmmaker Bryan Singer who is responsible for films like X-Men and Days of Future Past.

A still from X-Men (2000)

However, before Bryan Singer could bring these films to the screen, writer Chris Claremont had a different idea about what an X-Men film should look like. In his dream film, he would have loved to have renowned filmmaker James Cameron as the producer. In fact, Chris Claremont had a completely different casting for both Wolverine and Storm in his mind.

X-Men Writer Wanted Angela Bassett as Storm Halle Berry as Storm

For four of the X-Men films, out of which three had the involvement of Bryan Singer,...

15 Worst Cartoons Ranked According To IMDb

Since the start of animation as an art form back in the early 1900s, animated series have come a long way. With so many incredible animated series from all over the world, there are a lot of great shows for fans to find and praise. Unfortunately, there are two sides to the history of this storytelling medium, and as far as creators have come in their endeavors, there are some who still have a lot to learn.

As many great cartoons as there have been in the past several decades, there are just as many notably awful series that viewers have had to witness. Thankfully with the power of the internet, review boards from IMDb are a great way to avoid these infamous projects of the animated industry.

Updated by Fawzia Khan on 26th August, 2023: Animation is a medium that has no limits, but some cartoon shows can test audiences with boring stories,...

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Star Monica Barbaro Discusses Female Aviators Who Helped Hone Character and Shares How She Cemented Her Call Sign

[This story contains spoilers for Top Gun: Maverick.]

In 2004, Becky Calder became the first woman pilot to graduate from Topgun, so in keeping with their commitment to verisimilitude, Top Gun: Maverick’s brain trust knew that their film needed to follow suit.

That’s where Monica Barbaro enters the picture as Lt. Natasha “Phoenix” Trace, whose skills and reliability made her an easy choice for the film’s climactic mission. Barbaro admits that the character changed a lot throughout the entire process, and looking back, she’s relieved that she didn’t become a love interest to Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller) as originally rumored.

“When I first booked the role, there was a rumor going around that I was playing Miles’ love interest, which was funny because one of my favorite things about Phoenix is that she’s not a love interest. In this context, it was just a real honor to get...

A Video Store Employee Embarks on a Journey to Hollywood To Audition For a Sam Raimi Movie in Trailer For Fanboy
I’ve got an amusing trailer here for a new short film called Fanboy. The Story centers around a video store employee who embarks on a journey from South Carolina to Hollywood to audition for the next big film from Sam Raimi, who is his favorite director.

The movie has a fun cast that includes Fran Kranz, J.K. Simmons, Sam Raimi, Matt Lanter and Ian Bohen. The film radiates the message of following your dreams no matter how big and crazy they might be.

As you know, lots of people from all over the world travel to Hollywood in hopes that they get their big break and become a big star. While there are plenty of success Hollywood stories, there are a lot more people out there still working their asses off to try and break into the business.

While Hollywood success stories don’t normally play out like how this movie portrays,...

20 Superhero Movie Moments That Were Impossible To Forget
Movie critic David Thomson recently published a book called “Moments That Made The Movies,” which consisted of 72 hand-picked (and highly personal) “moments” from across the span of cinema – moments that he believes have come to define the medium it its entirety. And you know what? Not a single superhero movie in the bunch! What’s wrong, Mr. Thomson? Don’t think The Avengers has the dramatic weight of something like Sunset Boulevard? That Heath Ledger’s Joker doesn’t compare to to all those Jack Nicholson movies you selected? Oh, you don’t?

Well, we do. Enough to make our own list, in fact. Here’s our picks for 20 Superhero Movie Moments That Were Impossible To Forget, assembled to celebrate what is – in this day and age, anyway – cinema’s most popular sub-genre. A moment doesn’t have to be good or bad to have made the list, of course...

World War Z: An Antidote To The ‘Fanboy’ Pandemic Ruling Hollywood?
There is a virus sweeping the boardrooms of film studios throughout Hollywood. It is a bitter, poisonous little blighter that sucks the joy and originality out of anything it touches. It is a self-serving, self-aware, tyrannical strain of social profiling. And it is quickly dominating the way in which films are conceived and made. It is eating away at filmmakers, and rapidly controlling the output of every major studio in modern cinema. It is known only as the ‘Fanboy’ plague.

In recent weeks, Fanboys have come under fire for their continual outcries against directors. These rabid moviegoers are baying for the blood of anyone who fails to meet their expectations of how certain characters should be “faithfully” depicted on film. Some even go so far as to claim that Hollywood is “mauling” their favourite characters and superheroes. ‘Man of Steel’ is the most current casualty of this. Does it really...

5 Things That Need To Happen in the 'Spider-Man' Sequel
The numbers are in and "The Amazing Spider-Man" is a hit.

(Note, I am writing this about a week before "The Amazing Spider-Man" opens but, call me crazy, I'm pretty sure I'm making a correct assumption here.)

Now that Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have thwipped their way into our hearts, what's next for Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, New York City and that dude who stood in the shadows and said menacing things to Dr. Curt Connors?

Only time will tell, but, just in case the film's chief producers are reading (oh, who'm I kidding, they get a text every time I blow my nose) I've got five basic suggestions for the "Amazing Spider-Man" sequel.

Musical Director's Chairs

The fact that "The Amazing Spider-Man's" director Marc Webb hasn't said, "Yes, absolutely, I'm 100% on board for the sequel" means the dude isn't doing the sequel. I don't have any inside information on this,...

In Defense of the Reboot: 'Spider-Man' Edition
Tell me if this happens to you:

You're at an amusement park. You're eating cotton candy (candy floss, if you are living in Victorian England). You and your buddies get on line for the insane, backward, upside-down, stand-up roller coaster you aren't allowed to ride if you wear a pacemaker because just by looking at it you will probably have a heart attack.

You're chatting with your pals, then suddenly you are next in line and it is time to get in the car and Oh My God Why The Hell Am I About To Do This?!?!?

This is, perhaps, what might happen to you when you go to see “The Amazing Spider-Man” next week.

You'll go, because it is Spider-Man, because we've got to see all movies with people zipping around in colorful suits, but the moment before the lights dim you might think, "Hey, waitaminute, shouldn't I be...

5 Reasons Why 'Cabin in the Woods' Will Blow Your Mind
"The Cabin in the Woods'" tagline "You think you know the story" is the best piece of cinematic sloganeering since that brilliant "Jaws 2" ad, "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water..."

The studio marketing folk are taking advantage of the fact that it is really, really hard to describe "The Cabin in the Woods" without giving away some of what's awesome about it.

However, I am happy to say that, thanks to some intensive study and preparation, I'm ready to explain just why "The Cabin in the Woods" is one of the coolest movies in ages...

Without spoiling anything that isn't already in the trailer.

Oh, and by the way? I whizzed in the water. It really wasn't safe. Movie advertising never lies.

Zoe Saldana Will Play Guardian Half-Angel Over Her ‘Dominion’
Now that we’ve all ogled Zoe Saldana’s goodies in the exploitation schlockfest Colombiana, the actress can step off of the publicity circuit and start work on something new. What’s that going to be? I’m glad you asked. According to THR Saldana is moving on a project called Dominion that’s something of a supernatural thriller. It’s about a creature that is a hybrid of an angel and a human, and Saldana seems to be perfect for the role because, well, she’s really pretty. Some might say angelic. It’s coming from a pitch by Dean McCreary and Chester Hastings, a relatively new-on-the-scene writing team who have credits in two upcoming films, one a familiar sounding thriller called You’re My Angel, and the other a film about a video store clerk who worships Sam Raimi called Fanboy. In a first for Saldana, this job will force her to rely on a...

Zoe Saldana Is Half-Angel In Dominion
Your suspicions were right! Zoe Saldana may actually be an angel. The Columbiana, Avatar, and Star Trek star is taking on a new supernatural thriller project with Paramount Pictures, entitled Dominion, where she plays a character whose heritage is both human and angelic.

THR reports that Dean McCreary and Chester Hastings are pitching the project to Paramount and Saldana will not only be starring in the picture, but also serve as a producer with Robbie Brenner (Machine Gun Preacher).

McCreary and Hastings have also written You’re My Angel which is in development with 4 Horsemen Films and a short film called Fanboy about “a video store employee who is the world’s biggest Sam Raimi fan.”

No hard details about the plot have been reveals as of yet, but keep it right here on SciFi Mafia for the latest news!

Zoe Saldana to Pull Double Duty In Dominion
Oh, Zoe, with your beauty and on-screen presence, you never cease to impress us. You come across as a person who can do it all. Which is why we're not in the least bit surprised to hear you were going to produce as well as star in the upcoming project Dominion.

With her new film Colombiana hitting theaters this weekend, it's been announced that Saldana will team with Robbie Brenner (currently producing Machine Gun Preacher with Gerard Butler) to co-produce a supernatural thriller entitled Dominion, in which she will star as a half-human, half-angel. And looking at Zoe, we're sure this one will come easy to her.

Dominion was pitched by Dean McCreary and Chester Hastings, who recently wrote a thriller entitled You're My Angel, currently in production by 4 Horsemen Films, as well as a short entitled Fanboy, which features cameos by Sam Raimi and Jk Simmons.

More as it comes.

Zoe Saldana Gets Heavenly For 'Dominion'
Zoe Saldana will soon be spreading her wings.

Somewhat literally, actually, as the "Avatar" star will be playing a half-human, half-angel in the supernatural thriller, "Dominion," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Paramount bought the "Dominion" pitch from screenwriters Dean McCreary and Chester Hastings, who are somewhat familiar with the whole "angel" theme, having written "You're My Angel," another thriller that's currently in development.

The writing duo also penned "Fanboy," a short film about a video store clerk who's the self-proclaimed biggest Sam Raimi fan on the planet. J.K. Simmons, who played J. Jonah Jameson in Raimi's "Spider-Man" movies, and Raimi himself make appearances.

Um... and where can we see this short film?

Zoe Saldana will also be co-producing "Dominion," which is probably still a ways off from an official start date, pending the actual writing of the script.

Zoe Saldana Enters Supernatural 'Dominion'

Is Zoe Saldana going to be one of those talented actresses who gets roles that are below her level until her once budding career is wasted away in one genre film after another? These may seem like harsh words, but after Saldana's great turn in 'Avatar,' we were looking for her to get much more challenging roles. Instead, she's been under-used in 'The Losers,' 'Takers' and this weekend's 'Colombiana' ('Colombiana' has been drubbed by the critics -- getting a 33 percent rating at Rotten Tomatoes, but the reviewers love the actress).

So pardon us if we don't applaud the news (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Saldana has set up the supernatural thriller 'Dominion' -- about a woman (Saldana) who is half-human, half-angel -- at Paramount. Saldana will also produce. Right now the project is in pitch form from Dean McCreary...

Rumor: An Amazing twist on The Lizard
After three films, fans will finally be seeing Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) turn into The Lizard (Albeit in a reboot of the series). What we haven’t heard is how the character will be handled in the movie. Neither of the villains in Sam Raimi’s trilogy were exactly as they were in the comics, but this reboot is said to be taking a different route. However, Big Fanboy has reportedly got hold of some Possible Spoilers that give a new twist on the character.

Once again, this can possible been seen as a Spoiler.

“One of the primary important crew members (who shall remain nameless) recently let it slip to one of our readers (a trusted one at that) that many of the stunt actors in the film have been spending time in heavy make-up for hours on end because of a fight scene in the film where...
