Ann Goldstein: Is this just another passing style, or is it something that will have a relevance and impact into the future? It is work that as we have seen has been very misunderstood, very hard to pin down. Because in fact when one dives right back into it one sees how absolutely diverse and often contradictory it is, and yet it marked a fundamental, and critical and pivotal and irrevocable change in the course of art history. So 40 years later, it's an opportunity to reconsider and introduce this work because much of this work as not been seen. This is a historical exhibition that helps us understand the present. Because it's important to understand the history that precedes the work that we may be looking at now.
