Classic rock band Poco’s “Heart of the Night” pulled off a tricky genre fusion. It feels like it had an influence on Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die with a Smile.” One of the songs is so much better than the other.
Poco’s ‘Heart of the Night’ combines rock and disco like Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars would
During the 1970s, two genres dominated the charts: soft rock and disco. It was inevitable that some artists would try to bridge that gap. In some cases, soft rock artists like The Eagles, Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney & Wings, and Elton John started making disco music. Other acts tried to make songs that combined elements of soft rock and disco.
Poco’s “Heart of the Night” did a good job of combining a soft rock core with some of the slick production of disco. It might be the best of Poco’s hits.

Classic rock groups were often more interconnected than they seemed on the surface. For example, The Eagles indirectly caused Poco’s “Crazy Love” to become a hit single. Here is a look at why Poco was able to take over the pop charts late into their career.
A member of Poco joined The Eagles before ‘Crazy Love’
Firstly, some background. Poco’s first ten albums were not exactly winners on the pop charts. Things changed with their eleventh album, Legend. The record included “Crazy Love” and “Heart of the Night.” If you are familiar with Poco, it’s almost certain you know those two songs.
During a 2014 interview with Goldmine, Poco’s Rusty Young was asked if Poco decided to reinvent themselves as a radio-friendly band. “No, I’ve just always written songs,” he replied. “What happened, in 1978 — actually the end of ’77 — Timothy [B. Schmit] left the band to join The Eagles,...

At A Down-home Eatery near his waterfront home on Florida’s west coast in 2017, Dickey Betts, stout and white-haired but still evoking his youthful intensity, was asked about his imposing reputation. “People are a little bit standoffish because they think if they say something wrong, I’ll be aggressive or something with them,” he told Rolling Stone, adding with his drawl, “But I’m not like that at all. Unless you start saying shit that’s really demeaning, and then I won’t hesitate to …” Betts didn’t finish the sentence,...

Dickey Betts, the singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the Allman Brothers Band whose piercing solos, beloved songs and hell-raising spirit defined the band and Southern rock in general, died Thursday morning at the age of 80. The cause was cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Betts’ manager David Spero confirmed to Rolling Stone.
“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Betts family announce the peaceful passing of Forrest Richard ‘Dickey’ Betts (December 12, 1943 – April 18, 2024) at the age of 80 years old,” Betts’ family announced in a statement to Rolling Stone.

“Monterossi: Season 2” finds Monterossi (Fabrizio Bentivoglio) still stuck with his producing role on the sleazy talk show he created, “Crazy Love”, that he’s been regretting since it started sliding into lowbrow exploitation. Flora (Carla Signoris), the domineering host, continues to push for the most lurid guests and topics, much to his chagrin. It’s akin to the havoc Dr. Frankenstein unleashed despite his laudable reanimation intentions. Monterossi had hoped for an “Oprah”, only to see his project devolve into a “Jerry Springer”.

As he’s always wont to do, Barack Obama has been trickling out his favorite bits of culture from 2023 over the past few weeks, and he’s finally shared his list of favorite songs.

Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson were happily married for 15 years. According to Neeson, part of the reason he was able to meet Richardson at the altar was because he turned down a film role. Italian TV gives us “Monterossi – The Series,” an unusual light-crime package. Lead character Carlo Monterossi (Fabrizio Bentivoglio) is the creator of a highly popular, sleazy tabloid series called “Crazy Love.” He’s disgusted by the voyeuristic monster they’ve unleashed on the public, and desperately wants out. His agent and the producers are doing all they can to keep him on board. That bit of conflict suddenly shifts to Carlo’s back burner when a masked guy with a gun comes to the door to kill him. Fortunately, the gunman misses. Otherwise, the series either would have just been a short, or they’d have needed a new star and title. You’ll be quite pleased to have spent the time getting to know the eponymous gent we’re given.

Van Morrison has said that he wants to start looking at alternative outlets to release the “mountain of material” he has ready to go.
The 77-year-old singer, best known for hits such as “Brown Eyed Girl”, “Moondance” and “Crazy Love” said that he’s had to stop himself writing new songs, because he has so many already.
Morrison is releasing his forthcoming album Moving on Skiffle in March – marking his 44th studio record.
The legendary artist says that traditional labels are only able to put out a few records each year, which doesn’t cater for the amount of music he wants to release.
"It’s been a problem getting records out, so I’ve been looking at other alternative outlets,” said Morrision while being interviewed by Billy Bragg for the April issue of Mojo magazine.

In the abysmal landscape of short film distribution, documentaries have had the easiest time translating to streaming and internet consumption. Often overlapping with hard-hitting video journalism, documentary shorts appeal to establishment news outlets like The New Yorker and The New York Times, and both outlets have funded numerous short documentaries over the last decade.
In its effort to earn industry clout by wracking up Oscar nominations, Netflix joined the fray, and its two nominations for Best Documentary Short this year are by far the most accessible.
This year’s nominees lean far lighter than in most years, which is somewhat surprising seeing as the terrible news just keeps piling up. Perhaps voters needed a little levity this year, or perhaps filmmakers themselves are seeking out more uplifting stories.
