The film is loosely based on John Cusack's take on Hollywood creativity according to interviews and Looper.
Al Pacino stated that he suffered embezzlement by a corrupt accountant in 2011 and lost all of his money. Broke and desperate for funds, he accepted roles in Jack and Jill (2011), Stand Up Guys (2012), and We Are Not Animals (2013).
