Austin Powers: the ultimate gentleman spy. Irresistible to women, deadly to his enemies and the most in-demand feature for a birthday party since numbered candles.
The sad reality of growing older is that, with every passing year, your birthday becomes less and less of a cause for celebration and a larger source of dread as you continue to find more gray hairs in the mirror while waiting for your friends to RSVP to the Partiful invite. When we’re kids, our parents are (hopefully) in charge of making the day special, and they’ll hire a clown, a magician or a theater school graduate dressed as Spider-Man to play around with the kids and kill time until the pizza shows up.
But for all the magic we miss when we celebrate our birthdays as an adult, birthday entertainment is one area where grown-ups have the upper hand — after all, Austin...

It is impossible to overstate Quincy Jones' influence on music and the music business throughout the second half of the 20th century. There wasn't a genre that Jones, who passed away yesterday at the age of 91, couldn't master as a composer, producer, performer, or all three. He kicked off his career playing trumpet for vibraphone god Lionel Hampton, served as trumpeter and music director for Dizzy Gillespie, and produced effervescent pop hits like "It's My Party" for Lesley Gore while expanding his range compositionally via jazz LPs and, perhaps most importantly, film music -- a field where the African-American artist stood out among a sea of white men.
Curiously, there isn't as much serious scholarship on the work of Jones, which is rather astounding considering his seismic 1970s and '80s impact as a producer for Michael Jackson on two of the top-selling LPs of all time ("Off the Wall...

It was ten years ago today, that the first John Wick hit theaters and began to play.
While the first Keanu Reeves starring, Chad Stahelski directed, and Derek Kolstad written movie flew under the radar at the box office only grossing $43M stateside and $86M worldwide, the R-rated action pic ala the original Austin Powers boomed on home entertainment and mushroomed into a mega franchise across four films for Lionsgate grossing $1.02 billion.
Lionsgate has several festivities planed including special events, anniversary screenings, new experiences, and new collectible merchandise, culminating in the release of Ballerina: From the World of John Wick next year on June 6. Keep reading below.
“John Wick is a wonderful role and the first film was an extraordinary experience,” said Reeves. “The combination of character, story, so completely intertwined and expressed through Chad and Dave’s action design, was very special.”

Singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet, who grew to fame in the 1990s with alt-rock hits including “Girlfriend” and “I’ve Been Waiting,” has suffered what his manager is calling a debilitating stroke that will prevent him from performing for the foreseeable future.
Sweet had the stroke while on tour in Toronto earlier this month. His management company Russell Carter Artist Management announced the situation on a GoFundMe page this week.
“Matthew Sweet, our longtime inspiration and dear friend, suffered a debilitating stroke this past week in Toronto while in the early days of a national tour,” said his rep Catherine Lyons in a statement. “He has been unexpectedly and tragically forced off the road and onto a long, uncertain path to recovery.”
Sweet played Toronto on October 13 with his tour mates, the ’90s hitmakers Hanson. Sweet’s national acoustic tour, which has included Hanson on only some dates, was scheduled to continue through November 16.

“Tulsa King” faces the same challenge confronting every location-driven TV show: in some way, it must make its setting feel interesting enough to rope in viewers unfamiliar with the place and its culture. Its initial premise does most of the work immediately: New York gangster Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he decides to build a new mob from scratch. Viewers can instantly relate to Manfredi’s fish-out-of-water circumstances — many of them have no concept of Tulsa, making it feel vaguely foreign despite its geographic proximity to American audiences.
“Tulsa King” immerses us in part by trading generic establishing shots of the city’s sparse skyline for gliding glances at the iconic Mayo Hotel and street-level peeks up at Tulsa’s few skyscrapers. Equally crucial to the show’s believability, though, is the way the characters dress. Costume designer Susan McCabe recognizes that, for many viewers,...

Earlier this summer, Hulu shared the first look at Chad Powers, starring Glen Powell, and we all became instantly interested in the upcoming comedy. What updates have surfaced since? We’re here to help you keep up with everything to know about Chad Powers so far.
I’ll be honest here, as much as I love Glen Powell, I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the first look Hulu shared. Let’s just say, the Twisters movie star is looking very different. But make no mistake, Powell is a brilliant actor and a hilarious one, too, which is all the upcoming comedy Chad Powers needs. That said, the first look did not discourage us from pinning the comedy so we can check back as more details are known.

The Hulu half-hour comedy series Chad Powers has added Clayne Crawford (The Finestkind), Xavier Mills (Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire), Colton Ryan (Poker Face) and Toby Huss (Fatal Attraction) to its recurring cast.

Glen Powell is the big man on campus once again.
After starring as a college student in “Everybody Wants Some!!” and later as a college professor in “Hit Man,” both directed by Richard Linklater, Powell is now going quasi-undercover as a college quarterback for Hulu comedy series “Chad Powers.”
Powell, who recently co-wrote “Hit Man” with Linklater, is the co-creator, co-writer, executive producer, and lead star of “Chad Powers,” which is inspired by Eli Manning’s former sketch series. Powell co-created the half-hour Hulu comedy with Michael Waldron, who also executive produces. Powell and Waldron co-wrote the pilot episode.
The logline reads: “When bad behavior nukes hotshot Qb Russ Holliday’s college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.”
And the Chad Powers look includes Powell donning a prosthetic to be eerily similar to his “Top Gun” co-star and public mentor Tom Cruise.

Every TV Fanatic knows that there is always the good and the bad that comes with a strong first episode of a series because while the story likely hooks the audience immediately, maintaining that level into the following episode can be a hit or miss.
Not with Orphan Black: Echoes Season 1 Episode 2, though.
Once again, the show has delivered a perfectly paced story that doesn't feel bloated or convoluted despite introducing more characters, both old and new, while still managing to move the character-driven plot along.
If this episode deserves credit for one thing, it's its seamless shift in tone throughout.
A lot of shows try to adjust tone, thinking that it'll help with the pacing or atmosphere of the story to strengthen the themes and vibes or as a failsafe to keep audiences interested, but this tactic rarely works as it usually takes viewers out of the story.

Famous for starring in the Mike Myers-led Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Elizabeth Hurley will be headlining her son’s directorial debut, set to release next month. Amidst the controversy surrounding the erotic thriller following Hurley’s steamy scenes in the movie, which were shot by her son Damian Hurley, the actress expressed that the experience was liberating.
While watching s-x scenes unfold onscreen alongside their children can be awkward for many parents, the actress said having her son behind the lens for Strictly Confidential was relaxing.

No one loves Eli Manning as much as I do. Somewhere, I have a book on Manning inscribed, “To the only Giants fan who never booed Eli.” (Accurate.) There are the jerseys, cards, the autographs, the bobbleheads. I was at Eli’s first game, his retirement ceremony game, and so many in between. One time, I interviewed Manning while he was ostensibly promoting Frank’s RedHot Original sauce just so I could relive the glory days he never knew we shared. But I know a ripoff when I see one, and Hulu’s new series “Chad Powers” is a direct attempt to capitalize on the gigantic success of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.”
Before “Ted Lasso” was a show, Ted Lasso was a heightened fish-out-of-water original character created solely to promote a major media company’s sports brand. It was to be a one-and-done comedy skit. Before “Chad Powers” was a show,...

Glen Powell is headed back to college — and to Hulu.
The red-hot star of Anyone but You and the forthcoming Twisters will star in Chad Powers, a comedy series about a disgraced college football quarterback who disguises himself and walks on to another school’s team. Powell also co-created the Ted Lasso-ish series with Michael Waldron, the creator of Loki and writer of the next two Avengers movies. It’s based on an episode of ESPN+’s Eli’s Places, in which former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning goes undercover as a walk-on prospect named Chad Powers at Penn State (watch the episode below).

I am a sucker for a good old-fashioned brawl between Wolverine and Sabretooth. They are actually few and far between when compared to other great comic book rivalries. Again the cover carries the ‘Fall of X’ banner and on the credits page we get a caption explaining this story takes place after X-Force #50 and before the new Powers and House of X books. I have said before how wider continuity doesn’t bother me too much when it comes to reading Wolverine, but it can just take you out of the moment every now and then. As comedian Will Ferrell walked across the magnificent stage of The Kennedy Center to accept the greatest honor an America funny person can receive, The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, something happened that made us all remember why he is getting this prestigious honor. The award instantly slipped from Will’s hilarious fingers, shattering this legendary humorist’s bust all over the floor. An obvious gag, that was so damn fitting to what Will represents in the history of the art of doing silly stuff. Without breaking character for a second, Will hilariously tries to pick up the pieces as the world just sat back and laughed… but not laughing at him, we were laughing with him. The appeal of Will Ferrell comes from his innocent “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude that elevates simple stupid jokes to performance art. As Mr. Ferrell once said, “What I...

I went through a Bendis kick, around the time a lot of the hip comics kids did, back in the mid-Aughts. I at first liked Powers, and then thought it ran at high speed away from everything that was originally good about it. I was mostly impressed by Alias. And I think I wandered away about the time he, inevitably, like every other new writer in comics, was fully subsumed into the Wednesday Crowd and started writing sharecropped superheroes all of the time.

The Boys is expected to have many of its core characters return for the series’ fourth season. But how many newcomers will the series add to its roster of Supes and bad guys?
The new Supes joining ‘The Boys’ cast Antony Star, Karl Urban, and Cameron Crovetti in ‘The Boys’ | Amazon Prime
Much of The Boys season 4 is still being kept under wraps. But a few details have come out about the series’ next chapter that have only intensified the hype. According to Variety, it was announced last year that Valorie Curry and Susan Hayward would be added to the cast. The two will be playing Supes Firecracker and Sister Sage respectfully, and according to the showrunner, they’ll fit right in with The Boys’ chaotic universe.

The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes are on the verge of transforming both the Emmy and Oscar seasons this year, dealing another blow to an awards landscape that over the past three years has been rocked by declining ratings, pandemic-fueled cancellations and delays and the near-collapse of one of the best-known awards shows, the Golden Globes.
The strikes have already changed the face of the Emmys’ phase 2 voting, with the show date in limbo and actors and writers unable to do any kind of campaigning for their nominated shows. This week, one high-profile film, Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” pulled out of its opening-night slot at the Venice Film Festival rather than hold a high-profile premiere that its actors would not be allowed to attend.
And the longer the strikes go without a settlement, the more they will transform the crucial fall period for the Oscars and other film awards.

Sony Pictures Animation previewed a still unfinished 14 minutes of the eagerly anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to best animated feature Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, on Monday at CinemaCon.
“In 2018 we delivered the most creatively ambitious movie I’ve ever been a part of,” said Spa president Kristine Belson. “We are deeply proud of the sequel.”
The movie again follows Marvel’s Miles Morales/Spider-Man, voiced by Shameik Moore, and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, set across the multiverse of Spider-People. At CinemaCon, the pair were joined by new voice castmember Issa Rae (Jessica Drew) and Kemp Powers, one of the film’s trio of directors, to introduce the film.
It begins with Miles in his bedroom, when he receives an unexpected visit from Gwen Stacy. They swing and talk high above Brooklyn until they are interrupted by Miles’ parents. Before the segment ends, Miles...

Mike Myers has responded to claims that a crew member was fired from one of his films because they looked him in the eye.
Last week, radio presenter Jay Brody alleged on social media that he had been working in security on the set of 2008 comedy The Love Guru.
Brody claimed that he was warned that “if you look at him, you’re going to get fired”, and was later fired after he “caught his eye for a second”.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Myers’ representatives said that the Austin Powers star was unaware of the alleged incident.
“Mike knows nothing about this,” they said. “Not aware of anyone being hired or fired.”
Brody initially shared his claims in response to a viral video that showed Keanu Reeves moving production equipment while on the set of John Wick: Chapter 4.

Seth Green is the latest actor to accuse Bill Murray of inappropriate behaviour.
Speaking on the Good Mythical Morning YouTube show, Green said he was nine when the Groundhog Day actor picked him up by the ankles backstage on Saturday Night Live and dumped him in a rubbish bin.
“When I was nine years old, I did a spot on Saturday Night Live when Mary Gross was one of the on-the-scene anchor people for the news, and she did a whole thing about what kids think about the Christmas holiday,” Green recalled, adding that Murray was the show’s host that weekend.
“[Murray] saw me sitting on the arm of this chair and made a big fuss about me being in his seat,” the Austin Powers actor said. “And I was like, ‘That is absurd. I am sitting on the arm of this couch. There are several lengths of this sofa.

It’s been a good year for several documentary filmmakers who sought and found distribution for independently made projects at major festivals. But for many nonfiction helmers, this year’s festival circuit hasn’t proven to be as fruitful as it once was.
Pre-pandemic, streaming services went to film fests to fill their slates, but now with media conglomerates consolidating, brands merging, and Netflix tightening its wallet, film fest documentary shopping sprees have slowed down. On top of mergers and economic unease, there’s been an increase in streamers like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Apple, and Disney either pre-buying docus or commissioning their own nonfiction projects.
Some of this year’s fest favorites were commissioned docus, including Tia Lessin and Emma Pildes’ ‘The Janes” (HBO), W. Kamau Bell’s “We Need to Talk About Cosby” (Showtime), Rory Kennedy’s “Downfall: The Case Against Boeing” (Netflix), and Ron Howard’s “We Feed People...

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton now have double the reason to head to the Toronto International Film Festival next month. TIFF unveiled its documentary lineup today, which includes the world premiere of In Her Hands, a film executive produced by the Clintons through their banner Hidden Light.
The fest also unveiled its Contemporary World Cinema slate; see the full lineups below.
Hillary and Chelsea were previously announced as attending the festival in support of Gutsy, their upcoming Apple TV+ documentary series that “features intimate conversations with trailblazing women including Kim Kardashian, Meghan Thee Stallion, Jane Goodall, Gloria Steinem, Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer, Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson and many more.”
In Her Hands, directed by Tamana Ayazi and Oscar nominee Marcel Mettelsiefen, focuses on another gutsy woman—Afghan politician Zarifa Ghafari—who became, at the age of 26, the youngest woman to serve as a mayor of an Afghan city.

“The Boys” is going to see some more Supe competition in Season 4, with the addition of new series regulars Valorie Curry and Susan Heyward. Recurring star Cameron Crovetti, who plays Ryan, Homelander’s (Antony Starr) impressionable son, has been upped to series regular, Prime Video announced Monday.
Curry, known for Peacock’s “The Lost Symbol,” will be portraying Firecracker, while Heyward (“Orange is the New Black”) will be playing Sister Sage. No further details were available about their characters.
At the end of Season 3, Ryan chooses to go with his deranged Supe father instead of Butcher (Karl Urban), setting him down a path that is certain to lead to increased violence and chaos. In the final chilling shots of the finale, Ryan is shown vacantly smiling in response to Homelander’s brutal murder of a protester who had accidentally hit his son with a projectile.

Peter Dinklage is right: a live-action Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a fundamentally awful idea
I cannot see how Disney can remake its 1937 cartoon with live actors without falling into disablist stereotypes of people with dwarfism
As a professional actor living with dwarfism, all I could do when I read Peter Dinklage’s critical comments about Disney’s forthcoming live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was nod in agreement. Peter is a much more famous actor than I am, but my disability politics are very similar to his. I am very aware of the importance of representation, and of how few genuine and humanising representations there are of people with dwarfism on our screens and on our stages.
I am so careful about the roles I pick because I know that, if I get it wrong, there will be repercussions for some innocent person with dwarfism just minding their own business. I don’t want what I create as an artist to...

Kemp Powers is on a roll this awards season, as the co-director and co-writer behind Disney-Pixar’s two-time Golden Globe animated feature winner Soul and the writer behind Amazon’s Regina King directed movie One Night Miami which has Powers up for WGA and Critics Choice noms with the movie nominated for three Golden Globes and two SAGs including Best Ensemble.
Also of amazing note, it was through Powers that Pixar delivered their first Black protagonist in a feature film.
On today’s Crew Call, Powers’ tells us about his rise in Hollywood, especially for a frosh scribe over 40, who made sure ageism wouldn’t become an obstacle in his career.
“I think ageism trumps every other ‘ism. Ageism is worse than racism and sexism. It really, really is,” Powers tells us.
“I remember my first staffing job was Star Trek Discovery.

The trailer for “One Night in Miami,” Regina King’s feature film directorial debut, dropped on Monday.
“One Night in Miami” was written by Olivier-nominated Kemp Powers and is based on his 2013 stage play. It follows a young Muhammad Ali (when he still went by Cassius Clay) on the night of Feb. 25, 1964, as he emerges from the Miami Beach Convention Center as the new World Heavyweight Boxing Champion after defeating Sonny Liston.
Amazon acquired the film back in July of last year and said its plan was to release the film in time for awards contention. If Amazon’s awards team is successful in its pursuit, King could become the first Black woman nominated for the best director Academy Award.
Check out the trailer above.
