As Donald Trump says he wants a speedy end to the war, Betsy West wonders what form that will take, as her film offers a platform to the children caught up in the conflict
Director and producer Betsy West is best known for her lively, intimate portraits of remarkable women: her documentary Rbg, for example, a profile of the late US supreme court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; and Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down, about the US congresswoman who survived an assassination attempt in 2011.
Her latest project, though, is quite different. Once Upon a Time in Ukraine, which has been shortlisted for an Oscar, is a documentary she made working with footage she did not shoot on the ground herself. Instead, it was assembled by a Ukrainian team, headed by the director of photography, Andriy Kalashnikov. The material is, in some ways, more in tune with her old life as a...

On what was a raucous, joyous night inside the hall, the roll call at the 2024 Democratic National Convention set social media abuzz with the innovative use of a live DJ and music to introduce each state and territory.
During night two of the Chicago convention, DJ Cassidy took on the role of setting up each state and territory with short intro music, as each representative got a chance to talk up their home before declaring their delegates. The song choices ranged from expected (“Empire State of Mind” for New York, “I’m Shipping up to Boston” for Massachusetts), to some truly inspired choices (“Raise Up” by Petey Pablo for North Carolina and “The Way I Are” by Timbaland for Virginia).
Stealing the show, though, was Georgia, which flexed by having Lil Jon perform “Turn Down for What” live inside Chicago’s United Center. In his surprise performance, he rapped the...

Her courage to soar knows no bounds. This summer, she plans to return to the Olympic stage once again to do what she’s always done—be...

The news last week that Participant Media would be shutting down shocked the entertainment industry, but it hit the documentary community with particular force.
Going back 20 years, the production and distribution company has supported premium nonfiction content on a major scale, backing documentaries that took on important social and political issues ranging from climate change to race in America, education, the national security state, the U.S.-Mexico drug war, and much more. Along the way, it earned Oscars for Citizenfour, An Inconvenient Truth and American Factory, and Oscar nominations for a slew of others including Flee, Rbg, The Square, and Food, Inc.
On the latest episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, we discuss the developments at Participant and what they mean for a nonfiction field already been reeling from a sluggish acquisition market and slashed budgets at streamers. Our guests are Oscar-nominated filmmakers Betsy West and Julie Cohen,...

“Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down” begins with the former Arizona representative placing flowers in memorial vases for victims of gun violence. With a voiceover rife with potent pauses, her cadence sounds for a moment like a spoken word poem. While her rhythm is indeed intentional and meaningful, it’s not out of a sense of artistry. Instead, it’s a sign of the aphasia Giffords has wrestled with since a bullet ripped through her brain on Jan. 8, 2011. A gunman obsessed with the congressperson attempted to assassinate her as she was greeting constituents at a Tucson supermarket. Giffords and 12 others survived the mass shooting, but six people did not, including civics-interested Christina-Taylor Green, 9, and federal judge John Roll.
With their latest film, documentary duo Julie Cohen and Betsy West (“Rgb”) create a portrait of Giffords and her husband, Sen. Mark Kelly, that is both inspiring and infuriating. Watching the vibrant...

Julie Cohen and Betsy West knew they had to make their movie “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down” about former U.S. congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords when, in their first video call with her, they saw that she and her husband, Sen. Mark Kelly, had kept a piece of her skull in a tupperware in their freezer. Right next to the empanadas.
“They showed that to us early on and we immediately were like, that’s a scene in our film,” Cohen told TheWrap, even though in the moment, their documentary didn’t yet exist. “We were just dazzled really by Gabby in particular from that very first wonderful meeting.”
“From the very moment we met Gabby, it was obvious she would make an incredible subject for a documentary,” West added.
Giffords was a rising star in the Democratic Party when in 2011 she was shot in the head during a mass shooting in Arizona.

More than another close examination of the life and times of United Farm Workers leader Cesar Chavez, the documentary “Song for Cesar,” from co-directors Andrés Alegria and Abel Sanchez, constitutes a compendium of Chicano artists in the second half of the 20th century. Across a multitude of disciplines, their communal motivator was social-justice advocacy.
Sanchez, a veteran musician turned first-time filmmaker, sets the tone with footage from Fantasy Studios before talking-head interviews and archival footage begin unspooling a thread that extends from his contemporaries to current performers like the band Ozomatli or songstress Lila Downs.

Ned Eisenberg, an actor best known for his work on “Law and Order: Svu” and for starring in Clint Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby,” has died. He was 65.
Eisenberg died at his home in New York on Sunday after battling cancer, his agents confirmed to TheWrap.
“As Ned would say, he was attacked by two very rare assassins — cholangiocarcinoma and ocular melanoma,” his wife Patricia said in a statement. “Over the course of two years, he bravely fought the cancers in private while continuing to work in show business to ensure that his medical coverage paid for himself and his family.”
Eisenberg portrayed defense attorney Roger Kressler on “Law & Order: Svu,” a high-powered attorney who went toe-to-toe in the courtroom with the “Svu” regulars on numerous occasions. He separately played a different character on the standard “Law & Order,” another recurring defense attorney who appeared in seven different episodes dating...

Julia Child knew her way around a sauce the way Leonard Bernstein knew his way around a sympathy, the way Patrick Mahomes knows his way through a defense. That is to say, with panache.
The renowned cookbook author and pioneering TV personality is the subject of the documentary Julia, directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen, which is in contention for an Oscar nomination.
“Julie and I both grew up in a time of frozen food, weird Jell-o salads, mushroom soup casserole, and Julia changed all of that,” West tells Deadline. “Julia’s the reason why cooking shows are so incredibly popular, why Americans are much more adventuresome in the kind of food they eat. Julia introduced us to French food, but it just took off from there and America is a very different place after Julia.”

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive tracks from Marcelo Zarvos’ A Journal for Jordan score, which is set for release tomorrow via Sony Music Masterworks—ahead of the Sony Pictures title’s release in theaters on December 25.
The latest film directed by two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is based on the true story of First Sergeant Charles Monroe King (Michael B. Jordan), a soldier deployed to Iraq who begins to keep a journal of love and advice for his infant son. Back at home, senior New York Times editor Dana Canedy (Chanté Adams) revisits the story of her unlikely, life-altering relationship with King and his enduring devotion to her and their child.
The romantic drama scripted by Virgil Williams marked Zarvos’ second collaboration with Washington, on the heels of his Oscar-winning August Wilson adaptation, Fences. The composer says that for this “story about love, sacrifice and family that spans 20 years,...

This Supergirl article contains spoilers for Season 6, Episode 10, “Still I Rise.”
Supergirl Season 6 Episode 10
This episode felt simultaneously packed and like it barely moved along. Suddenly Nia, Nyxly and Orlando’s stories were all off to the races at once, and with Supergirl’s journey using her public platform as the main thread, there’s still so much left to cover. It felt like a possible backlash against Supergirl may have been left on the cutting room floor, and it was never really clear if that veggie promo went viral in a good way or a bad way, because every time someone mentioned it their reactions were cut short.
In a welcome move, Orlando and Joey’s story continues. In something of a meta commentary, Supergirl’s writers have figured out that if they’re going to tackle a series of systemic issues, it’s better to filter them through...

For the release, frontman David Gilmour and engineer Andy Jackson reconfigured the album from scratch, with help from Damon Iddins, getting rid of a lot of Eighties signposts (like ultrareverberated drums) and boosting the contributions of late Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright. It also features newly recorded drum parts by the band’s Nick Mason. The album is home...

Michelle Obama kicked off her “Dear Class of 2020” graduation speech with a list of uncomfortable questions and truths.
“Over the past couple of months, our foundation has been shaken,” Mrs. Obama said. “Not just by a pandemic that stole too many of our loved ones, upended our daily lives and sent tens of millions into unemployment. But also by the rumbling of the age-old fault lines that our country was built on. The lines of race and power that are now, once again, so nakedly exposed for all of us to grapple with.”
The former First Lady opened up, revealing that she too feels overwhelmed by the current state of the world. “If any of you are scared, or confused, or angry, or just plain overwhelmed by it all, if you feel like you’re searching for a lifeline just to steady yourself, you are not alone. I am feeling all of that too.

A Lena Dunham-produced high school dramedy has scored a series pickup at HBO Max.

Luke Bryan says Jason Aldean's terrifying experience at the tragic Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas earlier this month has given him "a whole new level of perspective" on life.
Speaking with Et's Sophie Schillaci on the red carpet at the Cmt Artists of the Year celebration at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center on Wednesday, Bryan reflected on how it felt to see Aldean and his band mates for the first time since the horrific mass shooting.
"[Tonight] is the first time I've gotten to see some of his band members and it's funny, you kinda hug them a little longer now," Bryan shared. "It's an eye-opening thing."
Bryan said that Aldean showed him some photos he took in the aftermath the shooting, and he was shocked at how close Aldean and his band mates came to being seriously hurt, or worse.
