The 2011 Sitges Film Festival, held 6-16 October on the Catalan coast of Spain, has released information on the films that will comprise the fest's "Noves Visions" section, which promises to be a category dedicated to the most innovative and transgressive approaches. Several genre films are represented, and we have the full rundown here.
The films are divided into four categories, three of which can be found below. We're including all the films in these three sections as even if some aren't pure horror, they sound intriguing enough to be of interest to genre fans. It's 7am at a cafe near the Palais and we're leafing through the schedule, working out which events we can cover and which ones we can't. Today, in particular, is already littered with casualties, with potential highlights that must be junked and ignored – but that's just a consequence of Cannes. Regardless what larger themes or shifting styles that are discovered or get attached to this year's Cannes batch, one of the major conversation starters is the prominence of global female filmmakers at the festival. There are 22 feature films by female directors (and I'm not even including the short films) which should be a record for any festival in recent memory. We have renowned auteurs Naomi Kawase and Lynne Ramsay to actress-turned-directors, Jodie Foster, Maiwenn, Nadine Labaki, Eva Ionesco, Hagar Ben Asher. Among the 22, with have a dozen or so from first time filmmakers including Julia Leigh (see below) whose first film is in the official competition and comes with the blessing from fellow Australian and Palme d'Or winner Jane Campion.
