Subhash K Jha looks back at Fahadh Faasil’s Trance. The Malayalam psychological thriller was released in theatres 5 years ago.
Trance is in its own way, a pioneering achievement, tearing as it does into the innards of fake religiosity where billions of bucks are generated by exploiting the weak and the vulnerable and where faith is forever flogged to death.
With a towering performance by Fahadh Faasil in the lead, Trance sweeps us into a world of depraved exploitation. Parts of the plot are purely pulp. But then, what is wrong with pulp when it suits the narrative’s purposes so well?
The lengthy film of almost three hours begins like a desi Rain Man with Fawad’s petty motivational-speaker character Viju Prasad looking after his psychologically disturbed suicidal brother (Sreenath Bhasi). It then veers viciously into a brown man’s version of Jane Campion’s Holy Smoke, where Viju...

On “Young Lion,” Sade’s first song in six years and her contribution to the upcoming Transa compilation, the artist apologizes to her son, Izaak, for not understanding him better when he began transitioning genders. “Young man, I feel so heavy for you, you must have felt so alone,” she sings over a slow piano line and cinematic strings. “The anguish and pain, I should have known.” By the chorus, she recognizes his journey: “Young gun, see how far you’ve come.”

Some of the artists in the big room are trans; others are allies. The overall vibe is one of community.

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

It's no question that Good Trouble is a series that's been ahead of the curve, not so much timely as having a headstart, tackling a plethora of issues, and displaying authentic storytelling since 2018.
It has a knack for addressing issues and showcasing diversity before the conversations even hit the mainstream, every bit a groundbreaking trendsetter as its predecessor.
And Good Trouble Season 3 Episode 15 is a perfect example of it with its organic display of intersectionality and Chinese culture through Alice and her Kwan and Coterie family.

Fahadh Faasil has carved his own niche in the Indian cinema. While primarily working in Malayalam-language films, he has become so prominent with the grounded performances, that he has an ardent fanbase, not witnessing a larger-than-life figure but to get a deeply humane experience. Anwar Rasheed’s ‘Trance’ largely depends on Fahadh’s bravura performance. It is rare to find a performance so arresting that it becomes the pulse of the film, almost making the actor seem like the auteur and the driving force behind it. This particular performance is not his finest and that speaks for itself.
In “Trance”, he plays the character of Viju Prasad – a motivational speaker based in Kanyakumari. Rather he can be better defined as a fraudulent salesman trying to make ends meet on the promise of selling hope to his customers. But he is not without his share of problems. With...

BlogSeveral landmark films released in 1995, from comedies to hard-hitting dramas and action flicks.Nandhu SundaramI am eternally grateful to Kollywood for making 1995 quite a delightful year. It was blockbuster time with Rajinikanth's Baasha leading at the box-office. Landmark films such as Bombay, Sathi Leelavathi, Kuruthipunal and Muthu added to the allure of the flickering image. Gnana Rajasekaran’s Mogamul won him the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film for a Director. IV Sasi’s Kolangal and Nasser’s Avatharam, one of my favourites, won big at the Tamil Nadu State Awards and further cemented the place of the auteurs. The list of good films didn’t end here — Indira and Aasai made the cut too. All these films have seen 25 years since release. I also remember unabashedly enjoying lesser films like Makkal Katchi, a rip-roaringly funny political comedy from film student turned director R K Selvamani, which had me in splits.

Film commentaryThese three recent south Indian releases, belonging to different genres, engage with ideas on faith and religious values. Sowmya RajendranNetflix series A Suitable Boy recently ran into trouble for showing a Muslim man and a Hindu woman kissing in a temple. Apart from the expected outrage on social media from right wing handles, an Fir was also filed against officials of the Over the Top (Ott) platform. The representation of religion on screen has periodically run into controversy with religious groups and the government, as in the case of films like Mani Ratnam's Bombay, Rahul Dholakia's Parzania, Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam, Rajkumar Hirani's Pk or more recently Raju Murugan's Gypsy. In the current political climate, such outrage and censorship have become the norm, with a communal angle given to characters, scenes and subjects even if the film ostensibly does not deal with religion or communalism. In such a scenario,...

MollywoodIt is an appreciable trend that actors of the newer generation seem to embrace any sort of role with joy.CrisSreenath BhasiIt's unlikely to be the image you would want people to have of you. A gigantic crown on your head, a hideous laugh, a chase on a rainy terrace, an assault to weepy background music and then the final smirk on the face. Roshan Mathew, a favourite with critics, had begun his film career with a forgettable rapist character, one among a few, assaulting a homemaker while proudly announcing that she’d be the sixth. Puthiya Niyamam, a movie with stars like Mammootty and Nayanthara in the lead, was remembered for other reasons. It was a year later that Roshan’s face became more familiar even as he played one of the many young people — most making their debut — in a college romance called Aanandam. Just as you thought...

After the awards glory of Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle had a relatively peculiar last decade. Following biographical dramas like 127 Hours and Steve Jobs to a Trainspotting sequel to oddities like Trance and the crowdpleaser Yesterday, he was about to embark on his biggest production yet with James Bond. While that didn’t work out, he’s now planning another studio tentpole and has a star attached.
Variety reports that Michael B. Jordan will lead Danny Boyle’s new take on Methuselah. Scripted by frequent collaborator Simon Beaufoy, based on an earlier draft by Tony Gilroy and a treatment by James Watkins, its a retelling of the Biblical story of the 969-year old man, who was the grandfather of Noah. There’s no word yet if Boyle and team are eying a modern-day update to the setting, but it will be a “new approach” to the story, so don’t expect the standard swords-and-sandal epic.

Farewell to the great Florian Schneider, co-founder of Kraftwerk, the German electronic duo who changed everything about the way music sounds. “Kraftwerk is not a band,” Schneider told Rolling Stone in 1975. “It’s a concept. We call it ‘Die Menschmaschine,’ which means ‘the human machine.’ We are not the band. I am me. Ralf is Ralf. And Kraftwerk is a vehicle for our ideas.” As his longtime collaborator Ralf Hütter once said, Schneider was the “sound fetishist” of the group — the machine in the mensch-machine.

MollywoodNazriya stars alongside her husband Fahadh Faasil in the much-anticipated ‘Trance’.Tnm StaffNazriya's Trance along with husband Fahadh Faasil is due for release on February 20. This is the actor's second film after her comeback, the first being Anjali Menon's Koode. Nazriya broke many hearts when she took a break from cinema following her marriage with Fahadh. The actor was extremely popular in the Malayalam and Tamil industries, known for her ability to emote while also being able to pull off high spirited roles without going overboard. In Trance, Nazriya plays Esther Lopez, and from the trailer, she appears to be from the corporate world, sporting a stylish suit with aplomb.
