Nightlight is available starting today on VOD and in theaters, and we caught up with directors Scott Beck & Bryan Woods to discuss urban legends and their unique approach to Pov filmmaking:
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. Can you tell our readers what brought the two of you together for Nightlight?
Beck/Woods: We’ve actually known each other since we were 11, and we’ve been making movies together as long as we’ve been friends. Throughout middle school and high school we made dozens of shorts and no-budget features, which really taught us the craft of filmmaking. We never formally studied film production aside from consuming DVD features and commentaries (“That Moment” on the Magnolia DVD is beyond inspirational), so we always refer to those early years as our “film school” experience. Since then we’ve constantly co-written and co-directed all of our works, including a...

Black Swan writer Mark Heyman has bagged scripting duties on upcoming adaptation, How To Catch A Russian Spy. The movie will be adapted from the forthcoming novel, How to Catch a Russian Spy: The True Story of an American Civilian Turned Double Agent by Naveed Jamali and Ellis Henican, which is slated to hit store shelves this June.
The true story book follows Jamali’s three-year experience as a double agent. During that period, he spied on America for the Russians and traded sensitive intel for great financial rewards, or so the Russians believed. In actual fact, Jamali was a covert double agent working with the FBI. It’s a gripping story that could have been yanked from a Robert Ludlum novel.
Fox procured the rights to the novel some time ago with a 2014 release initially on the calendar. (500) Days Of Summer‘s Marc Webb was – and still is – attached to direct.

Since making his directing debut on The Adjustment Bureau in 2011, George Nolfi was once shortlisted to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier before the job went to Anthony & Joe Russo. Otherwise, he's been trying to find his next project with Darren Aronofsky's Xoxo, an adaptation of One Minute to Midnight and a sci-fi film from The Last Stand writer Andrew Knauer as possibilities. However, it sounds like his next project will actually be a film of a different kind. Variety has word that Nolfi has been hired to direct Birth of the Dragon, a biopic about martial arts master Bruce Lee that emerged last year. Read on! However, as we learned last year, the film will chronicle the earlier years of Lee, including the real-life fight between the famous martial artist and Wong Jack Man, China's most well-known kung fu master. The fight will serve as the launching point for a bigger,...

With social media infiltrating the minutiae of daily existence, it’s only inevitable that the prevalence of such things would seep into the multiplex. And, of course, movie theaters near you will soon be bombarded with “social media thrillers” that center the dangers of Twitter feeds, Instagram accounts, Facebook profiles, and Google+ circles (kidding about the Google+, sorry, Google!). After all, what’s more terrifying that someone having access to scads of information about you, including (in some cases) your real-time location? And what could be more compelling than such a thriller penned by Black Swan scribe Mark Heyman? We reported on Heyman’s script, called Xoxo, over a year ago, and back then we only knew that it was set to center on “the way that social media has altered our interactions. The Adjustment Bureau director George Nolfi is now attached to both helm and oversees a rewrite of his sophomore effort Xoxo.
The social media thriller Xoxo was initially penned by Black Swan writter Mark Heyman and Nolfi will supervise a rewrite by Heyman.
A modern day Fatal Attraction, the Facebook thriller Xoxo, also compared to Catfish and Hard Candy, explores the dark side of virtual relationships as it follows an up-and-coming executive who blurs the line between his real-life fiancé and his online affair, bringing a whole new meaning to the term ‘poke.’ The main character discovers that his Internet romance is seeping into his actual life in a deadly way.
The film that will have many stylized visual sequences, Darren Aronofsky will produce alongside Michael London, with the project being developed at Lionsgate.
Nolfi most recently worked on the script for Jee-woon Kim’s upcoming The Last Stand, the thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Morning 5: The Rock is a 'Badass', Fassbender Joins Portman and DiCaprio, Maguire and Hardy Team Up.
1.) Michael Fassbender is negotiating to star alongside Natalie Portman in Jane Got a Gun, a Western from We Need to Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay. Portman will also produce the sub-$20 million film through her handsomecharlie banner. [Vulture] 2.) Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Tom Hardy have joined forces to produce an untitled pitch for an animal-trafficking drama at Warner Bros. The film is said to be in the vein of Steven Soderbergh's Traffic, taking a look at animal trafficking from several different angles. The idea actually came from Hardy, then his Inception co-star DiCaprio, a long-time animal-rights activist came aboard and brought along his lifelong friend Maguire. They're currently looking for a screenwriter and while the project sounds promising, I also imagine it being very difficult to watch as an animal lover. [THR] 3.) Before making his directorial debut last year with sleeper hit “The Adjustment Bureau,” George Nolfi made his bread and butter as a screenwriter, with his spec script “Honor Among Thieves” famously reworked into Steven Soderbergh’s Euro-themed heist sequel “Ocean’s Twelve.” Nolfi also did some fine tuning on “The Bourne Ultimatum,” and now is set to lead the overhaul of “Black Swan” writer Mark Heyman’s Facebook thriller “Xoxo.” The thriller, which will retain Heyman as sole writer but under Nolfi’s guidance as he will also be directing the film, follows “an on-the-rise exec who's engaged to be married but enjoys flirting online. He meets an alluring woman on Facebook and the two begin a virtual relationship, but the Internet romance begins seeping into the protag's actual life in a deadly way.” So yes, the “Fatal Attraction” for the millennial...

"Geoff Dyer's forthcoming book Zona (2012) has a premise that is so simple and brilliant it seems almost a wonder that it hasn't been tried before," blogs Katie Kitamura for frieze. "[A]s the book's subtitle puts it, Zona is 'A Book About a Film About a Journey to a Room.' In other words, a book about Andrei Tarkovsky's seminal Stalker (1979), itself loosely based on the novel Roadside Picnic (1971), by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky. 'Loosely' is key here. The skeleton of Zona is something like a glorified transcript of Tarkovsky's film, a factual description of what is seen on the screen…. But Zona hangs a great deal onto the scaffolding of this formal conceit. The book itself is full of digressions, both filmic and personal, as well as footnotes, interpretations, imprecations and asides. There's a definite gulf between the tone of Zona and the tone of Stalker, which is almost...

Darren Aronofsky and Mark Heyman’s new Facebook thriller, the awkwardly titled Xoxo, has found a home at Lionsgate, according to a report in Variety.
Heyman, the writer of Aronofsky’s absurdly brilliant Black Swan has wrote the script which is described as a 21st century version of Fatal Attraction and revolves around a promising twentysomething executive who is engaged but falls into an online fling with a female contemporary on Facebook, only for her to go all Glenn Close on him. A ‘deadly twist’ is promised, so you can probably take a good guess at where this one is planned to go. See ‘Catfish‘ for a good example of what I’m talking about.
Sadly Aronofsky is only producing the movie as it would have been kick-ass to see his claustrophobic, Polanski style Black Swan direction on another of Heyman’s scripts. A hunt is currently on for a director.

This past summer a report came out saying that Mark Heyman, one of the writers of Black Swan, was shopping around a new drama called Xoxo. Similar to Fatal Attraction, the basic description of the plot was about a young man who begins flirting with a girl on Facebook who ends up becoming obsessed with him. As you might surmise, one of these online dalliances starts to go rather wrong.Bits of Hard Candy and Catfish in there, as well as the aforementioned Fatal Attraction and that film's progenitor Play Misty For Me. His buddy Heyman aside, you might wonder what attracted Aronofsky to the project, but...

[1] It's been months since Black Swan co-writer Mark Heyman began shopping [2] his upscale thriller Xoxo, but the project has finally found a home at Lionsgate. After months of negotiation, the studio has just finalized a deal to acquire Heyman's spec script, described as "Fatal Attraction for the digital age." As previously reported, Darren Aronofsky and Michael London (Sideways) are set to produce, along with Kelly Mullen. More details after the jump. Xoxo centers around a young up-and-coming who indulges in online flirtation despite being engaged to be married. He meets an attractive woman on Facebook, but their digital relationship proves to have deadly real-world consequences when she begins stalking him. Xoxo will incorporate stylized visual sequences to show the characters interacting, as well as streaming video and other social media platforms. It's unclear at this point what those scenes will look like, exactly, but they're bound to be more interesting...

The idea of a thriller that centers around Facebook leaves a lot of room for plain old stupidity, but when you hear the ideas behind Lionsgate and Warner Bros.’ new projects that happen to be such a thing, they don’t sound half bad.
As Variety says, Lionsgate has acquired is Xoxo, a spec script written by Black Swan co-scribe Mark Heyman. Produced by Darren Aronofsky through Protozoa Pictures and Michal London through Groundswell Productions, it’s described as “Fatal Attraction for the digital age,” as it revolves around “an on-the-rise executive who despite being engaged, enjoys flirting online, where he meets an alluring woman on Facebook.”
Soon, “the line between online temptations and real-life possibilities begins to blur, [and] the protag soon discovers that his Internet relationship is seeping into his actual life … in a deadly way.” As we heard back in June, the online interactions will be exhibited through “stylized visual sequences,...

Liongsgate has plans to develop Xoxo from a script by Mark Heyman. Variety has the news, saying that Darren Aronofsky will reunite with the Black Swan screenwriter to produce the internet thriller. The movie is said to involve a young businessman who winds up in a deadly back and forth with someone he meets on Facebook . Heyman is also attached to the potential Marc Webb project, Age of Rage , announced earlier this year . Aronofsky, meanwhile, is set to develop his biblical epic, Noah at Paramount Pictures. No director for Xoxo is currently attached.

Lionsgate picked up Mark Heyman's script Xoxo , a Fatal Attraction -like thriller. Heyman previously penned Black Swan , making the writer a hot commodity. Here, the story follows an executive who flirts with a lovely lady on Facebook behind his fiancee's back. The relationship he carries on with this girl soon turns deadly. Sounds like a fancy version of every Fatal Attraction copycat we've seen over the last two decades. But hey, Darren Aronofsky is on board to produce. No direct has been attached yet.

Once you've sat through 'Black Swan' and all the leg-crunching, schizophrenic horror it throws your way from beginning to end, that's probably all the evidence you'll need to conclude that screenwriter Mark Heyman is a creepy dude. Who knows what he's like in real life, but when it comes to movies, he might a well be wearing a strait jacket. With that being said, we're pretty excited to hear that one of his upcoming projects, 'Xoxo,' sounds like it'll be tapping right into that crazy brain of his.
From what we've heard so far, 'Xoxo' is about a guy who strikes up a relationship with a girl he meets online, but then she turns out to be nuts and starts obsessively stalking him. Sounds like a mix between 'Catfish' and 'Fatal Attraction,' and as long as it's done well,...

The success of the psychological thriller effect from "Black Swan" may have led one of the scriptwriters to pen another thriller. 24 Frames reports that Mark Heyman, one of the scriptwriters of the Natalie Portman-starring film, has written a script for "Xoxo", an upcoming movie which will revolve around a Facebook stalker.
The forthcoming movie follows a twenty-something guy who meets a female friend on Facebook. He later strikes a relationship with the young woman, only to find a disturbing fact that the girl is obsessed and stalking him.
Apparently, the plot is a mixture of "Black Swan", "The Social Network" and "Catfish". "Black Swan" is represented by the obsessive relationship, and "The Social Network" contributes to the Facebook focus. "Xoxo" will also use social media savvy a la "Catfish" to explore digital identities.
Heyman is allegedly shopping the "upscale genre" script for "Xoxo" around the town, including to numerous genre labels,...

Facebook is still popular in Hollywood. Deal with it! And now, when we know that Black Swan writer Mark Heyman will be in charge for something that has a lot to do with Facebook, it sounds even more popular.
Or, maybe we should call this movie The Social Network meets Black Swan online?
Whatever, I’m trying to say that we’re here today to start a little chat about project titled Xoxo. So, let’s start it.
First of all, a little explanation. Xoxo is a project that will tell us a story of a twentysomething man who meets a female contemporary on Facebook and begins a digital relationship with her, only to find the object of his affections take the relationship to an obsessed and stalker-y place.
I like the way guys from LATimes explained the whole thing by saying – think Fatal Attraction but with Facebook.

Fan of the Academy Award-winning film Black Swan? Then you'll be happy to hear that the team behind all that masturbatory goodness is back to deliver some blood-soaked hugs and kisses with Xoxo.
According to The L.A. Times, Xoxo, written by Black Swan writer Mark Heyman, who is co-producing with Darren Aronofsky, tells of a twentysomething man who meets a female contemporary on Facebook and begins a digital relationship with her, only to find the object of his affections take the relationship to an obsessed and stalker-y place. Think Fatal Attraction (but with Facebook).
Xoxo, which makes use of streaming video and other social-media platforms in addition to Facebook, also evokes the documentary Catfish in its exploration of slippery digital identities. (The letter-centric title is, of course, a reference to affectionate, and potentially creepy, online sign-offs.)
The script is now being circulated in Hollywood, including to numerous genre labels,...

Black Swan writer, Mark Heyman, is currently shopping a new script for a thriller titled Xoxo. The La Times repots that Heyman is currently shopping the script around Hollywood, which will be produced by Darren Aronofsky.
The story is said to be "Fatal Attraction but with Facebook". It focuses on "a twentysomething man who meets a female contemporary on Facebook and begins a digital relationship with her, only to find the object of his affections take the relationship to an obsessed and stalker-y place." The project will use streaming video and other social media platforms in addition to Facebook to tell the story.
I am interested in seeing how this story develops. When I saw the trailer for Catfish I had hoped that it would be something much darker than it ended up being. This has the potential to be very cool, what are your thoughts?

While I never made myself a "Eric's Favorite Movies of 2010" list, public or private, if I did the top two movies would have been The Social Network at number one and Black Swan at number two. Sure, they aren't the most shocking choices in the world, but, if anything, the number of lists the two titles showed up on demonstrates how incredibly great they were. Now, in a very strange way, the two movies are being combined. The Los Angeles Times reports that Mark Heyman, one of the three writers behind Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, has produced a script called Xoxo that has started getting studio attention. A thriller that seems to have close ties to Fatal Attraction, the story is about a man in his 20s who begins a digital relationship with a girl on Facebook, but things start taking a dark turn when the girl becomes obsessed...

So sue us, we're about as excited as you can get about Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" adaptation.
Fortunately for us fans, Empire is too. That's why we're pretty thrilled that "The Hobbit" is gracing the August issue of the mag (out June 30) with some brand new looks at Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Ian McKellen re-donning the gray robes as Gandalf, and tons of inside scoop from the set. It should at least tide us over until the flick's Comic-Con panel.
In the news after the jump, "Prometheus" footage will be screened soon, a "Horrible Bosses" red band trailer hits the web and "Fast & Furious 6" gets a new release date.
"Fast & Furious 6" Becomes A 2013 Summer Blockbuster
