The Ring's ending provides one of the most memorable scares in horror movie history, but that often distracts from the bleakness of the story's conclusion. Based on Koji Suzukis novel and Hideo Nakatas Japanese adaptation of the same name, Gore Verbinskis The Ring was a hugely influential horror film of the early 21st century that inspired a flood of Hollywood projects that took influence from the booming Japanese horror movie industry. Apart from that legacy, The Ring is able to stand on its own as a terrific entry in the genre with an unforgettable ending.

Exclusive: A British talent agent, who has worked with soap stars including Emma Rigby and Helen Flanagan, has been accused of professional misconduct by six former clients.
Archie Purnell, founder of Manchester-based Bodhi Talent, has supplied actors to major productions for Netflix, the BBC, and ITV, but is facing claims he misled clients in a bid to bolster his standing in the industry.
Deadline has uncovered a series of allegations about the agent, including that he has sent actors illegitimate briefs for self-tape auditions, broke regulations on payment deadlines, and failed to observe industry best practice in contracts. Bodhi is currently at risk of being struck off the UK Companies House register for filing its accounts late.

Here’s who plays which character in the film based on Christie’s 1969 novel “Hallowe’en Party” — and where you might have seen the less familiar names before.
“A Haunting in Venice” is now streaming on Disney+.

Stephen King recommended his horror series Lisey's Story as the perfect July viewing, but the Apple TV+ series actually breaks King's 19-year Rotten Tomatoes streak. Based on King's 2006 novel of the same name, he also served as the show's creator, executive producer, and writer. Lisey's Story follows widow Lisey (Julianne Moore) as she copes with her the death of her husband, the famous author Scott Landon (Clive Owen) while learning secrets from his past. Despite the show's intriguing premise, the Apple TV series received Rotten scores from both audiences and critics.
While Lisey's Story didn't resonate with audiences upon release, Stephen King took to Twitter to recommend the psychological horror show. In his Tweet, King wrote "July might be a good time to binge Lisey's Story, on Apple+. All episodes directed by Pablo Larrain all written by me." Melanie Lynskey shared a touching farewell post of actor Julian Sands, whose remains were found in the San Gabriel mountains earlier this week following a months-long search. The “Yellowjackets” star had been friends with Sands since 2000, when they worked together on the set of “Red Rose.”
Lynskey said she’d been a fan of Sands’ film “A Room with a View,” and recalled being nervous to work alongside the actor, but took note of his positive qualities.
“I could barely speak to you,” she wrote in her Instagram post Wednesday. “When I did finally tell you what the movie/you meant to me, I was struck by your humility, your lack of ego, the absence of any grandstanding. “
Lynskey recalled growing close with Sands over the following years, and being taken aback by his generosity.

There’s probably a clever German word invented to describe the increasingly common and frustrating act of spending an entire evening indecisively flicking through Netflix arguing about what to watch before just giving up and going to bed. The streaming giant has over 7,000 titles on its UK version alone, so you can be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all, and its recent tendency to cancel beloved Netflix Originals – some would say too soon – can leave you wondering where best to commit your time.

Leading lights of contemporary Iranian cinema, including “Holy Spider” actor Zar Amir Ebrahimi, “The Siren” director Sepideh Farsi, “The Opponent” helmer Milad Alami and producer Kaveh Farnam, turned up at the Cannes Film Festival to raise the alarm on the repression faced by Iranian cinema during a session hosted by Amazon Prime Video’s Sahar Baghery.
Iran has been the centerstage of widespread protests driven by women against the Islamic regime since Mahsa Amini died in police custody for for wearing her hijab too loosely in September 2022. Although the rebellion has garnered vocal support outside of Iran, it hasn’t succeeded in dethroning the Iranian regime. A number of dissident Iranian filmmakers and talent have been jailed over the last six months, notably Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof who was recently released from prison. Rasoulof was nevertheless banned from leaving Iran to serve on the jury of Un Certain Regard at Cannes.

The play, adapted by Lolita Chakrabarti — whose version of Life of Pi is on Broadway — directed by Erica Whyman and starring Madeleine Mantock begins performances at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 1 through June 17.

But following a “tsunami” of interest from eager ticket buyers, the show will transfer after its run in Stratford to London’s Garrick Theatre for 14 weeks from September 30 through January 6.
If the phenomenal level of interest is maintained, then expect seats at the Garrick to be hard to come by after they go on priority sale from March 28, with public booking from April 6.
The plain fact is that O’Farrell’s engrossing novel has sold more than 1.5 million copies and has fans on every continent.
Her story of the plain-speaking, free-spirited Agnes Hathaway; her relationship with Shakespeare; the heartbreaking death of Hamnet, their 11-year-old son; and how that tragedy inspired the Bard to write Hamlet; touched a nerve coming out as it did during the pandemic. “It’s totally a love story, it’s very romantic,” Chakrabarti told us.
‘Hamnet’ director Erica Whyman
Also, Chakrabarti continued: “Shakespeare is endlessly fascinating because we are trying to work out who was the man behind these amazing pieces of work, but Maggie O’Farrell’s book asks: Who was the family behind him? Anne, or Agnes, Hathaway has had a pretty bad press, and this redresses some of those injustices.”
Whyman had a “hunch”the RSC ought to put it on stage the minute she’d finished reading it because it dealt “so beautifully with bereavement and love.”
That love, Whyman observed, “carried Shakespeare to some of the most remarkable achievements of his life, notably writing Hamlet.”
Liza Marshall’s Hera Pictures already had acquired an option, and the movie’s in development with Neal Street Productions, founded by Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris and Caro Newling, and Amblin Partners. Chiara Atik is writing the screenplay.
Lolita Chakrabarti. Courtesy RSC.
However, O’Farrell and Neal Street had a keenness for it to be staged in Stratford, so agreements were struck with the RSC for Neal Street, in association with Hera Pictures, to allow a theater version that would be separate from the movie. Amblin has been supporting the stage adaptation enthusiastically.
O’Farrell has been giving “hands-on” attention to both the screenplay and the stage play, Newling said.
Newling admitted that “it’s unusual” to “shout about” transferring before you’ve opened, but “there was this tsunami of interest, and we were never going to satisfy the extraordinary level of interest during the run at the Swan alone. There is such demand for this title,” she added.
Maggie O’Farrell. Courtesy RSC.
The play’s a terrific opportunity for Mantock, who made her debut in a recent revival of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit directed by Richard Eyre.
Whyman, Chakrabarti and Newling all spoke of their excitement in finding Mantock, heaping casting director Amy Ball with praise.
“It’s simple,” said Whyman “She has got really old-fashioned star quality but at the same time has got her feet firmly on the ground. Agnes is a hard-working, fearless woman who knows her own mind, and so does Madeleine.”
For the Nottinghamshire-born Mantock, Agnes is a “giant role” for her. “It does feel like the role of a lifetime. I don’t know if I’ll get this opportunity again, so I’m very grateful.”
The cast got to meet O’Farrell during rehearsals, and Mantock remembers the novelist telling the company “that ‘not every person in history is remembered kindly and sometimes they are misremembered,’ and I think we all felt lucky to have a responsibility to look at how we might choose to see Anne Hathaway this time.”
Mantock said that “there’s a lot of pain and loss and grief, but there’s also the love, the joy and the hope. And you have to feel all of those things … that’s what life is.”
She noted the advantages of having Chakrabarti at rehearsals, plus, if needs be, “if we get a bit stumped and we don’t know which way to go with something, we can go to the book. We’ve got this amazing resource.”
So first the Swan Theatre, followed by a season at the Garrick in the West End. The phenomenon of Hamnet is unlikely to end there.
There’s Broadway and beyond.

The cast also includes Tom Vary as William and Sarah Belcher, Will Brown, Haydn Burke, Ajani Cabey, Faye Campbell, Frankie Hastings, Karl Haynes, Alex Jarrett, Hannah McPake, Elizabeth Rider, Rose Riley, Harmony Rose-Bremner, Obioma Ugoala and Peter Wight.
Creatives includes Tom Piper design and Prema Mehta lighting.

We’ve already seen the Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans M.C. and creator Kurt Sutter has been hinting for some time that there might be more SoA in the pipeline, even specifying a couple of years back that he wants to explore the story of Jax’s son, Abel.
Now it seems SoA‘s return could be pretty soon, according to hints dropped by Theo Rossi during a panel discussion about Emily the Criminal at Soho Works in Los Angeles on Friday.
“There might be something coming up where we’re all back together, which is insane,” Rossi told Deadline. “If it happens, it’s wild, but if it doesn’t, it would be perfect and really cool because we also talk every day,” he added, referring to his continuing friendship with the show’s lead, Charlie Hunnam, and the rest of the cast.

By drawing parallels and subtle references to The Ring, Netflix's Red Rose revives an iconic J-horror trope. Red Rose has an intriguing take on horror where, without having any supernatural elements, it instills chills and thrills by harping on real-world threats like online privacy and the exploitation of digital technology. Adding more depth and insight to its depiction of the growing terrors and anxieties surrounding the virtual world, Red Rose also finds an emotional footing by putting character ahead of its tech-centric mysteries and narrative devices.
The Netflix horror drama follows a typical three-arc structure in which its second and third arcs focus on unraveling the mysteries of its central Red Rose app and examining the torrid relationships between its characters. While there are a few harrowing moments in these arcs, Red Rose's horror shines through primarily in its opening episodes. One of the biggest reasons behind this...

The Gardener's identity in Red Rose may not be all it seems. Netflix's Red Rose did not have one single villain, instead utilizing multiple villainous characters. However, the Gardener was behind the killings of both Roch and Alyssa, making them a relentless and frightening foe to Wren and her friends. Nevertheless, the unknown figure of the Gardener stood behind the most reprehensible actions, singling them out as the very worst villain.

Spoilers for Red Rose Season 1 below!
The following article contains mention of suicide and violence.
After walking through the online terrors and riddles faced by a group of teenagers, Netflix's Red Rose resolves many overarching mysteries in its ending moments while setting the stage for season 2. What begins as a seemingly supernatural portrayal of modern technophobia in Red Rose later morphs into a terrifying conspiracy that alludes to many real-world issues surrounding online privacy. With each episode, Red Rose's action and drama further dissolve the lines between the real and virtual world, leading to a satisfying conclusion.
Although the Netflix horror drama leaves many crucial details to a viewer's imagination and intentionally paves the way for a follow-up, it presents some important details about its central app's origins and evil forces working behind it. At the same time, Red Rose also sheds its supernatural underpinnings towards the end...

The Netflix horror thriller Red Rose went into detail about the app behind the apparent suicides of two teenagers, and while it already looked sinister at the beginning, the world uncovered by Wren and her friends proved even scarier. Despite initially being described as an app preying on teenagers during their most vulnerable moments, the Red Rose app quickly unleashed its full potential, effectively terrorizing two teenagers that did not know each other. However, the world that Wren, Noah, Ash, Taz, Antony, and Jaya eventually discovered made the app even more dangerous, especially as its victims could never see how they were being manipulated.

With more people online than ever, the internet isn’t as intimidating and alien as it used to be. Everything also seems easier when you’re connected. Yet when the young and unaware characters in Netflix’s latest series Red Rose download a mysterious phone app, they fall prey to an anonymous predator lurking behind the screen. This basic concept of malevolent cyber forces affecting the real world is nothing novel, especially in such a contemporary setting, but this show does a convincing job of making the web feel unsafe again.
Red Rose, a BBC series that first aired in 2022, is set in the creators’ hometown of Bolton, England. Michael and Paul Clarkson (co-producers of The Haunting of Bly Manor) and production company Eleven (The Enfield Haunting) collaborated on this gripping exercise in technological terror. The story follows a clique of friends whose ostensible leader is targeted by the titular app.

Traditionally, January and February are the dumping ground for major Hollywood studios. With awards season in full swing and audiences playing catchup on the biggest titles of the prior year, the first two months are usually the perfect place for dropping projects that don't inspire much confidence. But the rise of streaming is slowly changing that trend. Less concerned about the box office and much more obsessed with keeping their release schedules consistent, streamers like Netflix make sure to always have exciting new titles lined up, dump months be damned. So expect another full slate on the streamer as we enter February. Just because it's the shortest month of the year, doesn't mean we can't still have plenty of fun!

Love is in the air on Netflix in February, from new romcoms like the Reese Witherspoon-starring “Your Place or Mine” to the return of murderous stalker Joe Goldberg in “You” Season 2 part 1.
Penn Badgley has long dispelled any misnomers of his “You” character being a romantic, but Joe himself still believes that’s who he is at his core. After killing his wife and faking his own death, Joe sets off for Europe so he can find Marianne (Tati Gabrielle), the woman he convinced himself he’s in love with before she learned the truth and fled. But breaking old habits has never been easy for old Joe, who quickly gets caught up in a most dubious clique of London high society that has its own struggles with lust, power, and the occasionally fatal crime.

BBC Three is to adapt Holly Jackson’s New York Times bestselling teen crime thriller A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder from Amazon Prime Video’s The Pursuit of Love producer Moonage Pictures.
Poppy Cogan, who has also written BBC Three horror Red Rose, will pen the adaptation.
A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder follows the murder of schoolgirl Andie Bell, a crime that everyone in the quintessentially English town decided was carried out by Sal Singh five years ago. But Pippa Fitz-Amobi – the smart, slightly square heroine – isn’t so sure and she’s determined to prove it, with many trying to prevent her from finding the truth.
Published three years ago, the book has gone on to be a New York Times bestseller and follows the likes of Conversations with Friends as a high-profile BBC Three adaptation.

Britain produces cop shows with an abandon that defies our present moment’s global supply shortages. Just this week, ITV launches two new procedurals – Ridley and The Suspect – while the BBC brings back its hit surveillance drama, The Capture, for a second season. It is a national addiction on a scale usually reserved for tea consumption, football hooliganism and insincere apologies. Within this obsession, The Capture represents the genre at its classiest and, though it might upset some patriots at our state broadcaster to say so, at its most American.
Holliday Grainger – surely one of the most charismatic actors to remain predominantly constrained to the small screen – returns as Rachel Carey, now promoted to Dci and working within the bubble of Correction. Correction, as The Capture’s first series exposed, is hi-tech audiovisual manipulation software, used for the planting of digital evidence by the authorities. As such, viewers can be fairly confident that,...

Netflix’s new series Mo begins almost like The Sopranos. We see a heavyset figure (the comedian Mo Amer) drive to work. The shots alternate between Mo, smoking a cigarette and bopping to the sounds of “Sittin’ Sidewayz” by Paul Wall and Big Pokey, and half-glimpsed shots of the world he passes – not New Jersey but Houston, Texas. He arrives at work (a tech repair shop) and is abruptly sacked, amid fears that the business will be targeted in an immigration crackdown (Mo is a Palestinian refugee). Later in the episode, he is caught up in a random shooting at a supermarket; he gets a bullet in the arm but, uninsured, he refuses to go to hospital. Does this sound much like comedy to you?
Obviously not, you might think. But Mo is not your traditional sitcom. Created by Amer and comedian Ramy Youssef, the eight-episode series, which draws from...

Teen horror Red Rose arrived on BBC Three this week to ruin the sacred relationship between a youth and their phone. As if the internet wasn’t scary enough already, in Red Rose a sinister app appears to drive teenagers to commit suicide. Is it supernatural? Who’s behind it? Why? And who will it strike next? This Bolton-set chiller is refreshingly funny at the same time as being super dark. Created by Michael and Paul Clarkson who have horror pedigree as producers on The Haunting of Bly Manor, the show features a strong ensemble cast of scrappy Northerners who call their collective group ‘the dickheads’. Over eight episodes the mystery of Red Rose slowly unfolds with some big old twist right up to the conclusion. Let’s break down the big questions posed by that ending.
Is Red Rose supernatural?
Nope, turns out man made. It’s not...

Social media is bad and scary, young women are frequently horrible to each other and everyone spends too much time on their phones is actually Not the main take away from the first three episodes of this sort-of-ya sort-of-horror series new to BBC Three. It’s actually a lot more nuanced than that in a series that initially plays like a mash up of 2010s horror, 1990s teen drama and Derry Girls’ potty-mouth rough-and-ready sense of humour. Weird combo though that may sound, in Red Rose it works, picking the best of the tropes, populating the show with likeable and believable characters and sprinkling modern social realism into the mix.
Set in Bolton in the modern day (we know this because everyone has a smartphone), a bunch of friends have just finished their GCSEs and are planning a summer of getting wasted. Rochelle (Isis Hainsworth) is the de facto leader,...

This past March, the cinematographer Christopher Doyle was under Covid-19 lockdown in Shanghai, waiting to return to Hong Kong. “They take us floor by floor, apartment by apartment, name by name to the school around the corner for testing… then they march us back,” he wrote in an email. While waiting to return to Hong Kong, he was finalizing a book of poetry and collages. He had recently finished a feature in the south of China; before that he shot “Love After Love” for director Ann Hui.
Based on an Eileen Cheng short story, “Love After Love” (currently streaming on Mubi) charts the decline of wealthy playboy George Chiao (Eddie Peng), coupled with the corruption of Ge Weilong (Sandra Ma), who will ultimately become his wife. Set in Shanghai largely before World War II, it is a hypnotic, feverish look at a privileged world disappearing faster than anyone realizes.
