Kat Coiro has been tapped to direct Happy Accident, ABC’s single-camera family comedy pilot from Modern Family writers Abraham Higginbotham and Jon Pollack, 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios.
Written and executive produced by Higginbotham and Pollack, Happy Accident centers around two Pittsburgh families — a father with three adult daughters, and a hotel lounge singer with her med student son — who are forced together after a decades-old secret is revealed.
Happy Accident marks the second pilot directing gig for Coiro and also reunites her with Higginbotham and Pollack, with whom she worked recently on Modern Family. Last season, she helmed Fox’s single-camera comedy pilot Daddy Issues, also produced by 20th TV, from actress-writer Erin Foster and New Girl creator Liz Meriwether. Probably best known for her 2013 film And While We Were Here, Coiro also has directed episodes of ABC/20th TV’s Single Parents, Fox/20th TV...

We still don’t know too much about Woody Allen’s upcoming Magic in the Moonlight, and a new set of images (below) doesn’t do much to shed light on the story. However, the shots do give us a tantalizing look at the film’s stellar cast, led by Emma Stone and Colin Firth. With Marcia Gay Harden, Eileen Atkins, Hamish Linklater, Simon McBurney and Jacki Weaver also playing roles, part of me wants to go in with the mystique intact – Allen rarely disappointed, and it would be tricky for him to do so with this cast.
In the past, Allen has fared extremely well by releasing his movies summer months, and no two films are better evidence of that than his last two: 2010′s Midnight in Paris and 2013′s Blue Jasmine. The former, in addition to being Allen’s highest grossing films, won the Academy Award for Best...

Kate Bosworth and Michael Polish hit up Guess' star-studded New York Fashion Week party Tuesday, which gave the newlyweds the chance to get dressed up and have a night out on the town. The outing was a far cry from what they have in store for Valentine's Day. "We are just going to spend the day at home. We are just the happiest when we are at home with our dog and cooking something," Bosworth told E! News exclusively. "We will cook something together and turn on the music and just be quiet." Even so, this Valentine's Day—the couple's first since tying the knot—will be intimate and sweet. "He is such a romantic, and I am, too," the And While We Were Here star said. "When...

"The World's End"
What's It About? The third installment of Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy, following 2004's "Shaun of the Dead" and 2007's "Hot Fuzz," "The World's End" features a group of five reuniting friends. They embark on an epic drinking marathon in an effort to top their pub crawl from 20 years prior, only this time an unexpected alien invasion strikes.
Why We're In: A refreshing blend of comedy and sci-fi, "The World's End" is the perfectly charming film to spoof the apocalypse genre and keep you endlessly entertained. Plus, it features hilarious (as always) performances from Wright staples Nick Frost and Simon Pegg.

"Adore," "After Earth," "And While We Were Here," "All is Bright" and "As Cool As I Am" are among the titles available in VOD now. Notice anything they all have in common? Yes, they all begin with the letter A. And that's no coincidence. "Everybody is coming up with titles like 'Aaa Action Star.' It's like the old days when people would name their company Aaa Acme Exterminator so they'd be listed first," said Bob Berney, CEO of Picturehouse. In fact, some productions are even changing existing titles to benefit from the alphabetical listing interface on most cable networks. Before its VOD release in August, the title of the film "While We Were Here" was changed to "And While We Were Here." By starting with an "A" rather than a "W," the film, directed by Kat Coiro and released by Well Go USA, increased its odds of being a VOD success.

In the internet age, it's hard not to Google search or Facebook stalk potential love interests in the hopes of finding some good info that you can use to your wooing advantage. In the new trailer for "A Case of You," Sam (Justin Long) scours the internet profiles of barista Birdie (Evan Rachel Wood) to learn her likes and hobbies so that he can transform himself into the perfect match. When Birdie falls for him, Sam has to keep up the act, or risk her finding out who he really is, which for some reason is a bad thing. Though the film seems to follow the usual romantic comedy trope of "I'm not who I said I was", albeit with a bit of a creepy stalker vibe, at least Long and Wood look like they've got some chemistry. And hey, is that Peter Dinklage in a comedic supporting role? The...

Title: And While We Were Here Director: Kat Coiro Starring: Kate Bosworth, Iddo Goldberg, Jamie Blackley, Claire Bloom Imagine a boring, gender-swapped and totally arty and pretentious version of the travelogue-mini-film-within-a-film that focuses on Kip Pardue’s character from “The Rules of Attraction,” except strung out on Benadryl instead of methamphetamine, and one has an idea about writer-director Kat Coiro’s “And While We Were Here,” starring Kate Bosworth as a married woman who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads while traveling with her husband in Italy. A film of precious construction but precious little insight, this drama of young adult crisis mistakes mere mundanity for a stirring creative statement. [ Read More ]

HereToFore: Coiro’s Latest Stale, Blatant Exercise
Actress turned director Kat Coiro reunites with Kate Bosworth for her sophomore feature, And While We Were Here, leaving behind the situational comedy from their previous venture, L!fe Happens for a somber hearted travel brochure of a couple’s dismantling. While everyone involved seems to be taking great pains to remain understated, there’s a surprising lack of nuance, and Coiro’s screenplay churns like a mealymouthed derivative of any number of similarly themed vehicles.

Harkening back to Italian neo-realism, the romance of Naples is alive in "And While We Were Here," the latest film from writer-director Kat Coiro. Considerably more watchable than her pratfall-driven debut "L!fe Happens," the picture is significantly more sober-minded, concerning the marriage of pretty blonde Jane (Kate Bosworth) and taciturn, mature Leonard (Iddo Goldberg). They arrive in the city and, almost as if by protocol, consume each other in bed. As she retreats to the lavatory, she gazes in the mirror and wraps her arm around her stomach mournfully. It's not hard to see that, while young, Jane has lost something. Leonard departs for concert rehearsals during the day, leaving Jane alone to swim in her thoughts. However, when they are together, it's not as if she's receiving much intellectual nourishment. She waxes philosophically about David Foster Wallace, but he's more of a meat-and-potatoes type, quite literally in one...

Anyone who caught writer-director Kat Coiro's delicate romantic drama "And While We Here" on the festival circuit will notice one big difference about the version being released in theaters this Friday (it's also available on VOD): it's in color. In her own words, Coiro opens up about why she listened to her distributor Well Go USA and agreed to convert the film to color. I shot my second feature film “And While We Were Here” with the intention of screening it in black and white, and when it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and played in subsequent festivals it was seen in its original form. However, the film that is currently streaming on multiple platforms and opening theatrically on September 13th is in color. The explanation for this opens up a rather interesting conversation about the differences between B&W and color and why we ultimately chose...

And While We Were Here, writer-director Kat Coiro's sun-dappled, largely handheld meditation on fidelity, sometimes recalls Richard Linklater's celebrated Before trilogy—specifically its middle entry, Before Sunset, wherein the fact that Ethan Hawke's Jesse has a wife and kid back home in the States hangs over everything. The married couple that Coiro follows to Italy, Jane and Leonard (Kate Bosworth and Iddo Goldberg), isn't nearly as chatty as Linklater's young/youngish/middle-aged lovers, and we infer quickly that the silence between them is a problem. He's a professional viola player in town for a big concert; she's a freelance writer working on a book about her grandmother's experiences in England during the two world wars. A delicate meditation on life, death, love and time, And While We Were Here caught me completely by surprise, in all the best ways. Directed by Kat Coiro (Life Happens), this relationship drama, set on the picturesque Italian island of Ischia, has some big questions on its mind but somehow remains nothing less than feather-light. And though I usually balk at slow-burn films, And While We Were Here swiftly won me over with its stunning backdrop, deeply affecting performances, and intriguing philosophical bent.

In the exclusive clip below, we’ve got a peek at the type of relationship that no longer adds up. Hubby and wife tandem played by Kate Bosworth and Iddo Goldberg look like poster-people for the beginnings of domestic ennui, and as the synopsis suggests it, sees escapism from a comfortable setting replaced by research into a memoir (fueling her creative instincts) and a romantic affair with a younger man (played by thesp Jamie Blackley) which of course make for future rough waters and fuels her need for desire. And While We Were Here (Well Go USA distributes on VOD August 13th, theatrical release September 13th) is a 2012 Tribeca and Locarno Film Festival selected pic from writer-director Kat Coiro, which came on the heals of her 2011 film, L!fe Happens.

It appears 300: Rise Of An Empire will keep with the original's tradition as a hard R-rating has just arrived for the upcoming sequel which will be hitting theaters next March while today's other three major releases receiving ratings include two PG-13s and a one-time R that won its appeal and has been dropped down to a PG-13. First we have the Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro boxing comedy Grudge Match for which I'm expecting a trailer soon as a bootleg version was floating around earlier this week, but was quickly dropped from YouTube. I caught snippets of it as Kevin Hart is seen running around ranting and raving as Sly and Bobby D get in a fight while wearing mo-cap suits, but didn't watch enough to give any general sense of what it will be like. Director Kat Coiro is on a roll when it comes to directing feature films. Her latest offering, “And While We Were Here” hit the festival circuit in 2012, and since then, Coiro’s completed two additional features (“Departure Date” and “A Case of You“). And the trailer for "And While We Were Here" has landed with some interesting changes since we first saw it.The film tells the story of a woman (Kate Bosworth) who finds love with a younger man (Jamie Blackley) while on an Italian vacation with her husband (Iddo Goldberg). The trailer desperately wants you to see the film through the lens of the great Italian directors such as Michelangelo Antonioni, with long walks near the water, reflective close-ups, and a thrilling ride on a Vespa. At the Tribeca Film Festival in April, Playlist writer Gabe Toro gave it a “B+” calling it “an affecting romance between a woman caught between two worlds.

Sometimes, even when you’re living out your life on a breathtakingly picturesque Italian island and look like Kate Bosworth, life can be hard. As Jane (Bosworth) finds out in Kat Coiro’s And While We Were Here, vacation time off the Italian coast might be the best time to let go of inhibitions and give in to making out with a cute dude. An homage to the many great romantic Italian films (I spy at least one dreamy Vespa ride), the film explores what happens when a person you meet on the street (Jamie Blackley) could turn out to be the love of your life. Smack in the middle of a fizzy-skewing resume that includes titles like L!fe Happens and A Case of You, writer and director Kat Coiro‘s And While We Were Here has long occupied a space of drama and romance that doesn’t seem to come with the kind of belly laughs the filmmaker’s other fare spawns. "On our first day in Seoul, my fiancé...and I venture out to discover Changdeokgung Palace," the While We Were Here star began a post about their trip to South Korea. Another happy day, indeed! Bosworth's rep hasn't yet returned a request for comment, but who are we to question the 29-year-old's descriptor of choice? Before getting involved with Polish a little more than a year ago when he directed her in the indie film Big Sur, due out later this...

While Cannes’ Quinzaine struggles to reframe its identity, its former artistic director Olivier Père continues to impress in his new job at the Locarno Film Festival. On Wednesday, he and his programming team unveiled a lineup that is absolutely salivatory, a who’s who for high-minded cinephiles. Perhaps most impressive of all, he has managed to once again nudge the festival’s selection aesthetic even deeper into esoteric ‘experimental’ territory without seeming all that radical. More than any other festival, Locarno is the home for the edgy projects that are too sophisticated for Cannes, whose cold shoulder to avant-garde narrative filmmaking becomes more glaring with each passing year. Check out the complete line-up at the bottom of this page.

The 2012 Tribeca Film Festival opened and closed with two glossy, star-studded premieres, as the raunchy rom-com "The Five-Year Engagement" and the surefire summer blockbuster "The Avengers" bookended the event.
But it was the far more modestly budgeted films in between that made the 11th annual Tribeca fest a success, with audiences and critics alike discovering gems you probably won't see plastered on the side of a bus anytime soon.
Our 10 favorites ranged from music documentaries ("Searching for Sugar Man") to quote-unquote mumblecore ("Your Sister's Sister"), but they share one common thread, at least in our eyes: They deserve a much wider audience. Maybe even on bus ads. – By Jason Guerrasio, Kevin Polowy, Nigel Smith and Brooke Tarnoff

Following the film's world premiere screening on Saturday, director Kat Coiro was on hand to chat with the audience along with two surprise guests: the men of While We Were Here, Iddo Goldberg and Jamie Blackley. The crowd was interested to hear about the 'genesis of this unique project,' which Kat immediately characterized as 'run and gun and crazy.' After working with Bosworth on a previous film, Coiro and Kate were eager to work together again and hit the ground running with this idea. As Coiro shared with amused and self-conscious disbelief, 'In April [2011] we said, ‘Let's make a movie.' I wrote the script in four weeks in May. The financing came in June and we shot in July. And now we're here.' Coiro immediately added, 'This immediacy and quickness was part of the process, and you feel it, I hope, in a good way,' in the film.

A couple head to Naples to try to revive their marriage.
Here's to the beautiful ladies...
Visual pleasure can be found in abundance in Kat Coiro's chic While We Were Here, filmed in black and white on location in Naples and on the island of Ischia, which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this week.
The opening number of Ziegfeld Follies (1945) has Fred Astaire sing about what makes it worthwhile to go to the theatre: "Here's to the beautiful ladies, here's to those wonderful girls…" I found myself humming...

Harkening back to Italian neo-realism, the romance of Naples is alive in "While We Were Here," the latest film from writer-director Kat Coiro. Considerably more watchable than her pratfall-driven debut "L!fe Happens," the picture is significantly more sober-minded, concerning the marriage of pretty blond Jane (Kate Bosworth) and taciturn, mature Leonard (Iddo Goldberg). They arrive in the city and, almost as if protocol, consume each other in bed.
She waxes philosophically about David Foster Wallace, but he's more of a meat-and-potatoes type, quite literally in one occasion when...

The 11th Annual Tribeca Film Festival began last night, with a star-studded gala screening of The Five-Year Engagement, starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. It’s a big, funny romantic comedy that you can see yourself at your local multiplex next week, but some of Tribeca’s other offerings are reserved for lucky Gotham cinephiles. New Yorkers are accustomed to a multitude of movie options, even when there isn’t a festival in town. So we won’t fawn over the amazing Searching for Sugarman — Sundance discovered it first — or the adorable period comedy, Hysteria, a Toronto find. New Yorkers like to be first.

Why He's On Our Radar: British actor Jamie Blackley, who stars alongside Kate Bosworth in the black-and-white Tribeca Film Festival World Narrative Competition contender "While We Were Here," told Indiewire over the phone from London, that his upcoming trip to New York will mark his first visit to the Big Apple. We have a feeling his stop here, in support of his charming turn in the Italy-set romance, won't be his last. The rising 20-year old talent, best known for his supporting turn in "London Boulevard" opposite Keira Knightley and Colin Farrell, is on his way to becoming a household name after bagging the lead role in Warner Bros.'s prequel to "300," ""300: Battle of Artemesia." Blackley will play Calisto, a 16-year old leader of a small band of soldiers. Prior to that opening (the film has yet to start shooting), Blackley will appear in this summer's blockbuster "Snow White and the Huntsman,...

New York -- If there's a keynote performance at the 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival, it may well be Abbie Cornish's riveting portrayal of a Texas single mother who, desperate for money to regain custody of her son, haphazardly smuggles Mexican immigrants across the border.
Such leading roles don't frequently come around for women, but this year's Tribeca boasts a boatload of them. In David Riker's "The Girl," which will make its world premiere in competition at the festival, Cornish's fraught, sweaty performance of a mother on the brink bears two more pervasive themes at the 2012 Tribeca: financial straits and overlapping worlds.
"It totally rebirthed me as an actor," says Cornish, the Aussie actress of "Bright Star" and "Limitless." "It felt like it was the first time again. In making the film, I felt like it was the best I had ever been as an actor in all regards – as an actor,...

Tribeca: Tell us a little about While We Were Here. How would you describe the movie in your own words? Kat Coiro: While We Were Here is a subtle meditation on love, loss, loneliness and the nature of time. Heartbreaking but also hopeful, the film is set against the lush backdrop of the Amalfi coast Island of Ischia, features a trio of moving performances, and tackles the subject of infidelity without addressing morality. To me, the main theme in the film is that one's individual struggles, be they miscommunication or surviving world wars, are no greater than the trials and tribulations that every human being must endure simply by existing at any point in time. Tribeca: What inspired you to tell this story? Kat Coiro: While We Were Here was inspired by a set of tapes I made of my own Grandmother before she passed away; by Kate Bosworth,...

If you were paying attention a couple of hours ago, you'll know that the Tribeca Film Festival has announced its preliminary slate beyond the opening night film, "The Five-Year Engagement." And it's a pretty good one so far, with highlights including "Jack And Diane," Bradley Rust Gray's long-awaited follow-up to the 2009's "The Exploding Girl," the Mexico-set drama "The Girl," starring Abbie Cornish, and much more.
With Tribeca's first-salvo slate announced, here come some first looks and new photos from a few of the films premiering at the festival. First up is the aforementioned teenage lesbian love tale/werewolf film (no really) "Jack And Diane" (above). This first look photo is of leads Juno Temple and Riley Keough. The rest of the cast features Jena Malone, Dane DeHaan (the bad kid from "Chronicle"), Leo Fitzpatrick and the one and only Kylie Minogue.

2012 Tribeca Film Festival announced the World Narrative and Documentary Competition film selections
HollywoodNews.com: The 2012 Tribeca Film Festival (Tff), presented by American Express®, today announced the World Narrative and Documentary Competition film selections, along with selections for the out-of-competition Viewpoints section—the program established last year that highlights personal stories in international and independent cinema. Forty-six of the 90 feature-length films were announced. The 11th edition of the Festival will take place from April 18 to April 29 at locations around New York City.
The Festival was curated by a new programming team this year. Frédéric Boyer has joined Tff as Artistic Director, having most recently served as Artistic Director and Head of Programming for the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Geoffrey Gilmore, Chief Creative Officer of Tribeca Enterprises, has expanded his role in overseeing the Festival program. Genna Terranova has been promoted to Director of Programming and Cara Cusumano returns as Programmer.

The Tribeca Film Festival announced half of this year’s movie showcase, the 11th edition of the New York celebration set for April 18-29. James Franco’s behind-the-scenes General Hospital feature, Francophrenia, will have its North American premiere in the Viewpoints section – the program established last year that highlights more personal stories. “He’s kind of constructed this really interesting and well-crafted film about that experience that plays with the boundaries of documentary,” says Genna Terranova, Tribeca’s director of programming. “It’s a bit tongue in cheek, as James himself can be. He’s a bit enigmatic and the film is as well.

With The Five-Year Engagement set as the opening title for the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, they’ve announced more of the line-up today with World Narrative & Documentary Features as the Viewpoint titles. We’ve got the next film from The Exploding Girl director Bradley Rust Gray, Jack and Diane (as well as a first look about featuring Juno Temple, thanks to Styd).
There is a new Harmony Korine short as well Kate Bosworth‘s While We Were Here and The Girl, starring Abbie Cornish. James Franco also has his latest film, Francophrenia, featuring footage from his performance on General Hospital. Nothing sticks out too greatly yet, but if I see something as interesting as Beyond the Black Rainbow or Magic Valley like last year, I’ll be a happy man. Check it out below and come back Thursday for the rest of the announcement.

SXSW kicks off later this week, but once your done slurping the BBQ sauce off your fingers, pack your backs and head north to Manhattan as the Tribeca Film Festival is gearing up to unspool in April. To whet cinephile appetites, organizers have dropped the lineup for the World Narrative Feature Competition, World Documentary Feature Competition and Viewpoints lineups and there are plenty of titles to take note of.
Among the narratives, the anticipated "Jack And Diane" from Bradley Rust Gray will make its world premiere. Starring Juno Temple and Riley Keough, the film takes a teenage lesbian love tale and twists the formula, with one of them revealing she's a werewolf. Add to that a cast rounded out by Dane DeHaan, Jena Malone and pop star Kylie Minogue (as a tattooed lesbian, of course) and you can see why this will be one of the hottest tickets at the fest.

Jamie Blackley, the 20-year-old heartthrob who got his start in London's production of "Spring Awakening," just nabbed another major break — the lead role in Noam Murro's '300' sequel, aptly titled "300: Battle of Artemisia."
Like its predecessor, the sequel anchors its plot in a war setting. Penned by "Act of Valor" scribe Kurt Johnstad, the story follows Calisto (Blackley), a teen whose desire to become the heroic man/ soldier his father was leads the 16-year-old (so they're shaving off a few years—we won't judge) to become the leader of a small band of soldiers.
No word yet on what this "band" of soldiers' agenda exactly is, but something tells us it might not be totally honorable.
According to Deadline, Blackley joins Sullivan Stapleton, the blue-eyed thesp of "Animal Kingdom" fame who snapped up another lead role in this next "300" installment just last week. Though not many other details are yet known,...

What a difference a year makes!
Back in January, Paige Harbison's debut novel, "Here Lies Bridget," hit bookshelves. (She was only 20-years-old at the time.) In October, it was acquired for the big screen. And now, NextMovie has learned that it has landed a director.

Kat Coiro, who helmed the Kate Bosworth starrers "L!fe Happens" and "While We Were Here" (out in 2012), has signed on to direct the film adaptation of "Here Lies Bridget." (Unfortunately, Bosworth might be a little too old to play the titular role in this one.)

Kat Coiro ("Life Happens," "While We Were Here") is set to direct "Here Lies Bridget", an adaptation of the Paige Harbison novel for Galgos Entertainment reports Deadline.
The story follows narcissistic mean girl Bridget Duke who crashes her car and ends up in limbo. There she must confront the people she has bullied, degraded and belittled, all of whom must decide if she goes to heaven or hell
Meanwhile, Sony Pictures has bought Drew Pearce's spec action/comedy script "Secretaries Day" and have attached Will Gluck ("Easy A," "Friends with Benefits") to direct and produce through his Olive Bridge Entertainment.
Pearce created the low-budget cult British comedy "No Heroics" and has recently scored impressive film writing gigs including "Iron Man 3" for Marvel Studios and a potential third "Sherlock Holmes" film for Warners.
